Attempt to pre-empt SC decision, appease Sangh ahead of polls: Oppn on Centre’s plea on undisputed Ayodhya land gns, New Delhi

The Centre’s petition in the Supreme Court seeking a modification of its 2003 order to return the excess land around the disputed Ayodhya site to its original owners has caused ripples in the political circle, with parties questioning the timing of the petition, barely months before the Lok Sabha elections in May. The CPI(M) alleged it was a “devious” effort on the part of the government to “preempt” the decision of the Supreme Court, which is hearing the land dispute case. In an official statement, the Left party said the petition was aimed at appeasing the Sangh Parivar ahead of the polls. “The politburo of CPI(M) expresses its strong

disapproval of the petition moved by the central government in the Supreme Court to remove the status quo in the non-disputed land that it had acquired in Ayodhya. It wants to handover the land to the Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas that has been set up by VHP (Vishwa Hindu Parishad) to undertake the construction of the Ram temple at the site,” it said. “The Centre now claims that only 0.313 acres is actually disputed. This move of the centre is clearly aimed at appeasing the Sangh Parivar which is demanding immediate construction of the temple at all costs. Obviously, all these moves are being orchestrated keeping the impending Lok Sabha elections in mind,” the statement said.

AIMIM's Asaduddin Owaisi also hit out at the government, calling it "another example of bringing the Political fight of of the Central Government in the Court Room."

Rahul promises passage of women’s quota Bill if Congress voted to power Recently, women parliamentarians had raised the issue of continuous delay in passing of the Women's Reservation Bill in the Upper House which guarantees 33 per cent reservation to women in Parliament and state legislatures. New Delhi Congress president Rahul Gandhi Tuesday promised that Women’s Reservation Bill will be passed in Parliament if his party is voted to power, PTI reported. The women’s quota bill – which provides 33 per cent reservation to women in Parliament and state legislatures – has been in the limbo ever since it was passed by the Rajya Sabha way back in 2010. Addressing a rally in Cochin, Rahul said, “The first

thing we will do when we win the 2019 election is to pass the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Parliament.” Rahul was responding to a suggestion from a party worker that there was a need for more women candidates. “We want to see women in the position

of leadership,” he added. Repeating his promise of minimum income to the poor, Rahul said, “He (PM Modi) has provided a maximum income guarantee to 15 of his friends. If you are Anil Ambani you have a guarantee to maximum income you can get. We are going to give a minimum income guarantee to all the Indians.” Rahul had also written to the prime minister in the past seeking his support for the women’s quota bill.

Ongoing demolition work at Nirav Modi’s posh bungalow in Maharashtra’s Raigad district has been stopped.

Costly fittings inside Nirav Modi bungalow slow down razing Mumbai

Ongoing demolition work at the Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam accused Nirav Modi’s posh bungalow in Maharashtra’s Raigad district has been stopped since January 27, two days after the razing process started, as authorities wanted to remove the valuable fittings inside safely to ensure that they recover the maximum cost from the property. District authorities have said the reports sought by them from structural engineers of the civil engineering department on how to proceed further, have been received, and they would now resume pulling down the bungalow. Raigad district collector Vijay Suryavanshi had last month ordered demolition of 58 unauthorised structures, which are located in Kihim along the Alibaug beach, over 90 kms

from here, including one of Modi. The demolition order was passed following rebuke from the Bombay high court for failing to initiate action against the illegal structures. The property, allegedly located within the low tide and high tide area, was attached by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) which is probing the PNB case, among other agencies, against Modi who is reportedly hiding in a foreign country. “The demolition

was stopped temporarily because the district authorities and the ED wanted to recover the maximum cost from the bungalow by removing the costly fittings,” Suruavanshi told News agancy Monday night. He said the authorities have received the opinion of structural engineers, and would start removing exotic fittings, valuable fixtures, window grills and other utensils, as per their advice.

PM’s Pariksha Pe Charcha: Don't force kids to 'fulfil' your 'unfulfilled' dreams gns, New Delhi

With less than two months left for Class 10 and Class 12 exams, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the 'Pariksha Pe Charcha 2.0' on Tuesday, requested parents not to force children to "fulfil" their "unfulfilled" dreams. The interactive session with the Prime Minister was held at the Talkatora Stadium in Delhi. While interacting with a crosssection of students, teachers and parents, Prime Minister Modi said: "I request parents, do not expect your children to fulfil your unfulfilled dreams. Every child has his or her own potential and strengths. It is important to understand these positives of every child". He added, "I hope

parents do not make the report card of their children their own visiting cards because if that is the aim then the expectations from children become unreal," he added. While answering a question asked by a mother about the negative effect of technology on studies, the Prime Minister said that technology should lead to the expansion of the mind. "I will not say exposure to technology is a bad thing for students. It is good that students are getting acquainted with new technology. Technology should lead to an expansion of the mind and as a means to innovate," he said. Prime Minister Modi, while talking about the pressure of result, said: "Exams are important in life, but one should not be stressed by it.

Congress has become 3G from 2G after Priyanka’s political entry: Amit Shah Kolkata

Taking a jibe at Nehru-Gandhi family, BJP national president Amit Shah on Tuesday said that the Congress will indulge in more scams with the inclusion of Priyanka Gandhi’s into active politics. Addressing a Ganatrantra Bachao Yatra at Contai in East Midnapore district, Shah slammed the “parivarvad” in Congress and said the party has become “3G from 2G”. “Rahul baba (Gandhi) comes here often. There was 2G in the ten year long government of Sonia ji and Manmohan ji. There was Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi which means two Gs. There was corruption and scams worth Rs 12 lakh crore when it was two Gs. Now Priyanka

Amit Shah praise PM Modi for speaking in hindi in UN meetings Cuttack

BJP president Amit Shah on Tuesday heaped praises on Prime Minister Narendra Modi while referring to surgical strikes and his address in Hindi at the UN General Assembly. “Pakistan attacked Uri by sending its terrorists. Within 10 days, Prime Minister Modi took the revenge through surgical strikes. This only he can do. The Congress can’t do this. When Prime Minister Modi speaks in Hindi at the UN General Assembly, every Indian feels proud,” said Shah, while addressing a rally here. Projecting BJP as the true custodian of marginalised sections of the society, he said: “BJP-led Central government is for the poor, tribal people and Dalits. Congress ruled India for decades but the poor did not get even basic amenities such as gas connections, medical benefits and electricity.” “After Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister, many houses got LPG connections.

Gandhi has come. Now if there are three Gs then what will be revised worth of all corruption and scams? The Congress has come up with a yojna to indulge in more scams by going from two Gs to three Gs,” Shah said. The BJP leaders said both Congress and Trinamool Congress are two sides of the same coin which believe in “parivartantra” (family rule). “Both Congress and Trinamool Congress are two sides of the same coin. There is parivarvad in Congress.

There was Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Sanjay Gandhi, Rajeev Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and now there is Rahul Gandhi. Here in West Bengal too, after Mamata Banerjee there is her nephew Abhishek Banerjee. Do you agree with this parivarvad? This cannot develop the country. They are saying the country needs a majboor (helpless) government. But we are saying the country needs a majboot (strong) government which only the BJP can provide,” Shah said. He also targeted chief minister Mamata Banerjee after her paintings were brought for crores by owners of chit fund companies. “Here hardearned money of 25 lakh people were amassed by chit fund companies. The TMC government is doing nothing to return the money.

Balaji has also approached the Supreme Court with a petition challenging his transfer, sources said. The petition, sources said, also has evidence against the interim director.

‘Punished because complained about your misconduct’: Transferred CBI SP to interim chief New Delhi

CBI SP T Rajah Balaji, who was recently transferred out of Delhi by interim CBI Director M Nageswara Rao, has accused him of “abuse of official position” and acting out of “malice and prejudice” because he had complained about Rao’s “misconduct” to the then director in March, 2017. In a letter written to Rao on January 22, the day following his transfer from Anti-Corruption Branch in Delhi to CBI Academy in Ghaziabad, Balaji has alleged that his posting in Delhi had been made “on humanitarian grounds” on account of his mother-in-law suffering from cancer

and receiving treatment at AIIMS. He has said it was on this ground that the government had even given him accommodation in East Kidwai Nagar, a government colony close to the hospital. Balaji has also approached the Supreme Court with a petition challenging

his transfer, sources said. The petition, sources said, also has evidence against the interim director. “You know better than me that you are not a man of honour,” Balaji has said in the letter, further requesting the interim director to “redeem” himself.

A TV drama spawned in India's financial shadows

The opportunity to own the largest broadcaster in a consumer market of 1.3 billion people doesn’t arrive all that often; even more rarely does it come after a single-day 26% rout in the stock. The special situation has arisen because of Indian infrastructure financier-operator IL&FS Group’s sudden $12.8 billion bankruptcy. Analysts who believed the tremors would reach other shadow-banking entities like Dewan Housing Finance Ltd. were half right. Yes, Dewan’s loan disbursements fell 95% from a year earlier in the December quarter amid pressure on the mortgage lender to deleverage. But the shock waves have now spilled beyond finance to reach the glamorous world of television content.Subhash Chandra, the founder who controls 41% of Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd., is putting half his shares on the block after making wrong-way leveraged bets in unrelated industries such as infrastructure, a mistake the tycoon acknowledged in an open letter on Friday evening. Although the stake-sale plan has been known for a while, the official explanation so far was that Zee wanted a partner to become a “global media-tech player." It’s clear now that the real reason is the debt load of Chandra’s Essel Group. BloombergQuint estimates the burden at ₹17,000 crore ($2.4 billion) across 87 operating companies as of March 31, 2017. The collapse of IL&FS found a mention in Chandra’s mea culpa. The implosion of the highly rated lender raised financing costs for everyone who had borrowed shortterm funds to invest in long-term assets such as roads, power stations, waste-management plants, or in the case of drugmaker Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd.’s billionaire founder Dilip Shanghvi, apartment complexes and windmills. The collateral for these forays in most instances was shares of their successful, publicly traded operating companies. But as both Shanghvi and Chandra recently found out, collateral can wear thin very quickly. All it takes is a whistleblower complaint of financial irregularities or a news article insinuating links with a company allegedly dealing in unaccounted-for cash to make the stock price plunge. Strenuous denials or defamation lawsuits can’t quite set things right with creditors left edgy by IL&FS’s defaults, though a weekend meeting with lenders does seems to have bought Chandra time to conclude the sale of his crown jewel. Zee, where I worked briefly in the 1990s, is a content powerhouse with a 20% share of India’s traditional television viewing market. The network also boasts 35% Ebitda margins despite heavy investment in Zee5, a fast-growing digital app. There’s no confirmed bidder yet, but according to a report in the 'Business Standard', Zee may be of interest to Amazon, Apple Inc., Tencent Holdings Ltd., AT&T Inc., Singapore Telecommunications Ltd., Comcast Corp. and Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. If that weren’t already a long list, Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd., a telecom operator controlled by Mukesh Ambani, India’s richest man, is also likely to join the contest, the article said. If Ambani snags the asset, his triple play of carriage, content and commerce could deal a blow to Amazon boss Jeff Bezos’s multibillion-dollar plan to dominate e-tailing in India. Demand for digital video in India is exploding as Ambani drives down data prices. With an enterprise value of $4.8 billion, and more cash than debt, Zee has a good chance to take on 21st Century Fox Inc.’s local-streaming platform, HotStar, as well as Netflix - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara Inc. and Amazon. com Inc.’s Prime. Editor

London Former British No. 1 tennis player Andy Murray underwent surgery on Monday, he revealed in an Instagram post a day after. The three-time grand slam winner is hoping to prolong his career after sharing at the Australian Open that it could be his final stint at Melbourne Park with the pain too much to handle. He went on to add that he was keeping Wimbledon as his target. In the social media post, Murray wrote, “I underwent a hip resurfacing surgery in London yesterday morning‌feeling a bit battered and bruised just now but hopefully that will be the end of my hip pain đ&#x;˜€ I now have a metal hip as you can see in the 2nd photo đ&#x;‘‰đ&#x;‘‰ and I look like I’ve got a bit of a gut in photo 1,â€? with photo his X-Ray. “I spoke to my team and I told them I can’t keep doing this and that I need to have an end point, because I was just playing with no idea when the pain was going to stop,â€? said a tearful Murray before the Australian Open began.

Smriti Mandhana continued her rich vein of form where she followed up her hundred in the first ODI with a 90run knock in the second to give India an unassailable 2-0 lead over New Zealand. The left hander’s fiery knock came after a feisty

bowling performance led by Jhulan Goswami (3/23) steered the side to a seriesclinching eight-wicket triumph. Mandhana has now scored fifties in eight of her 10 previous ODI innings – with 105 runs in the opening ODI. Opting to field, India produced an excellent effort to dismiss New Zealand for

just 161 runs in 44.2 overs before Mandhana and skipper Mithali Raj (63 not out) stitched a 151-run unbroken third-wicket stand to guide the team to a comfortable win. The duo resurrected the chase from 15/2 after the early loss of opener Jemimah Rodrigues (0) and Deepti Sharma (8).

Spain’s Olympic champion Carolina Marin is set to undergo a surgery, two days after rupturing her knee ligament during the summit clash of Indonesia Masters against Saina Nehwal. Former captain Wasim Akram on Tuesday slammed Pakistan Cricket Board’s decision to call back Sarfraz Ahmed from South Africa after he was handed a four-match ban for breaching the ICC’s Anti-Racism Code. Wasim said Sarfraz should have avoided making the comments that he did in the third One-day International in Durban but it was wrong to speculate about his future in the Pakistan team. “It was a wrong decision to call him back from South Africa when he could have played in the final T20 on February 6, said Akram. What Sarfraz did was wrong but it is also a fact that more than anyone else, Pakistanis around the world hyped up his comments and created an issue, said the fast bowling great. The former skipper, who is also on the PCB’s cricket committee, was clear that Sarfraz should remain the national team’s captain.

After a brief delay, she tried to continue and also won a point. However, she failed to endure the pain and was forced to retire from the contest in tears with the score at 10-4. Expressing sympathy after being declared as the winner, Saina during the on-court interview said, “Not good at all. She is very tough competitor for all the players. She started off very well. It was, I think, unfortunate to see her retiring hurt with the injury.

In a positive development for the domestic renewable energy sector, the state government of Gujarat has modified its land laws relating to the development of wind and hybrid (wind and solar) parks in the state. Land has been earmarked for wind and wind+solar hybrid projects auctioned by Gujarat state agencies as well as central agencies. According to an official at the Gujarat Power Corporation Limited (GPCL), “Now, wind and hybrid parks will be developed in Gujarat. These parks will be developed on the same lines as solar parks. For central government entities such as the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), it will now be mandatory to consult with Gujarat state departments before issuing tenders for wind or hybrid

project capacities.” The GPCL official informed that this law has been brought into effect keeping in mind that the central government agencies tender projects that can be set up anywhere in India. This used to create issues as the capacities were awarded without due diligence and later the developers would face issues of land availability. With the new laws in place, the state government has earmarked space in Kutch region which has high wind energy potential. The approximate space required for 30 GW of wind and hybrid projects will be developed and the central government agencies can tender capacities for a total capacity of 20 GW only, according to the official. The central government agencies will be required to deliberate with the state before issuing such tenders in order to check the preparedness of the parks and the land availability.
