SUNVILLA SAMACHAR Education Must Be Rooted In The Reality Of A Vast And Diverse Country Like India Education in post-independence India was supposed not just to provide knowledge and skills to students, but also to facilitate the process of “nation-building” (to use a clumsy word). Since the concept of an “Indian nation”, although it existed in a rudimentary form earlier (going back even to the writings of Amir Khusrau), came into vogue only during India’s anti- colonial struggle, the “nation-building” role of education requires above all an awareness of this struggle, which in turn demands familiarity with the condition of India under colonial rule, and the facts of exploitation of its people. It is not just students of humanities and social sciences who need to have this familiarity, but all students, including those doing the natural sciences and engineering, if they are to become what Antonio Gramsci had called “organic intellectuals”, of the people of free India. The production of such “organic” intellectuals necessarily implies therefore that the curriculum, and course contents of education, not just of higher education but even of elementary education, should be different in India compared to the advanced countries, where, for instance, the deprivations inflicted by colonialism on the colonised people hardlyever get mentioned. In fact J D Bernal, the renowned British scientist, was of the view thateven in the natural sciences, countries like India should have a syllabus and a course content that should be sui generis and not imitative of the metropolis. For instance, given the nature of the disease profile in India, the medical education of Indian doctors must have an emphasis that is different from, say, in Britain. (This is in addition to the fact that Indian doctors must also know about colonialism and the anti-colonial struggle). It follows that if education in countries like India is to serve its true purpose, then it must have a content different from education in metropolitan countries. This is not to suggest that the basic propositions of physics or chemistry or mathematics should not be taught in India; it is simply to say that they have to be organised within a syllabus that is not identical with what is taught in advanced countries. And this is a view that was generally accepted in academic circles in India for a long time. With neo-liberal globalization however we have the very opposite happening. The multinational corporations straddling the world would like to get personnel who can be moved around from one country to another. And quite apart from the question of the mobility of the personnel, the very mobility of capital across countries requires that the environment should be uniform in the different host countries, including the attitudes and intellectual formations of the personnel it recruits. Globalised capital in short would ideally like the educated middle class, from which it employs its personnel, to be as alike everywhere as possible and also as close in its views as possible to what it finds in the metropolis. It has a deep interest therefore in having a homogeneous education system across the world that produces identical potential recruits and social support base for itself. This is exactly what neo-liberalism would like to see replicated in countries like India and the New Education Policy of the Modi government attempts to do this. Such homogenisation of education is perfectly compatible with the Hindutva emphasis on the so-called “greatness” of ancient India, on the marvels of Indian science and mathematics in antiquity in this or that particular area (excluding all Islamic contributions), and on the supposed oppression of the Hindus in medieval India; for none of it impinge son the colonial period or about the exploitation by colonialism of the Indian people, Hindu and Muslim alike. This exploitation was altogether different from all previous historical experience of the country since it entailed a “drain” of wealth from India and deindustrialisation of its craftsmen, both of which conjointly created modern mass poverty. Thus the conversion of the syllabus and course content in India to bring them in line with what is taught elsewhere in the neo-liberal world as an implantation from metropolitan universities, together with a dash of Hindutva ideology specific to India, fits perfectly well with the Modi government’s agenda. It is the counterpart in the realm of education of the corporate-Hindutva alliance that currently dominates the Indian polity. The corporate element that is integrated with globalised capital is happy with the homogenization of education that obliterates all reference to the impact of colonialism and colonial exploitation, and looks at capitalism as a more or less self-contained system, while the Hindutva element is happy with the crumbs of comfort that are offered to - Kapilkumar M. “Modiji More Powerful Because Of Congress”, Says Mamata Banerjee From Goa Agency News: Panaji Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday slammed the Congress for making Prime Minister Narendra Modi (and the BJP) “more powerful” by acting as the party’s publicist, and appeared to rule out any possibility of an alliance with the GOP ahead of elections in Goa next year. She accused the Congress of failing to recognise the need for the opposition to unite and underlined the importance of regional parties to counter the BJP and strengthen India’s federal structure. “Modiji is going to be more powerful

In Goa to campaign for the Trinamool, Mamata Banerjee has confirmed an alliance with Vijay Sardesai’s Goa Forward Party, which is a former ally of the ruling BJP because of the Congress... because the Congress is the BJP’s TRP (television ratings points). If they (the Congress) cannot

take a decision... the country will suffer. Why (should) the country suffer... they have had enough opportunity,” the Trinamool chief said. In Goa to campaign for the Trinamool - which has tied up with Vijay Sardesai’s Goa

Forward Party (former allies with the ruling BJP) - she pointed to the April-May election in Bengal. The Congress had then turned down a chance to ally with the Trinamool, opting instead to work with the Left and, controversially, the Indian Secular Front. State Congress chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury grandly declared “there will not be any BJP or Trinamool... only the grand alliance will remain.” It slumped to a miserable defeat at the polls - neither the Left nor the GOP won a single seat. The Trinamool - which claimed a strong win this week lamented the Congress’ unwillingness to join hands.

No relief for commuters even as barricades removed from borders; BKU says ‘protests will continue’ Agency News:New Delhi The Delhi Police on Friday began removing barricades from the Ghazipur border, where farmers have long been protesting against the three farm laws. Officials of the Delhi Police were seen removing iron nails that were installed on NH9 at Ghazipur, where hundreds of protesters, mainly belonging to the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), have been occupying a road stretch since November 2020. The police had placed barricades on the roads, along with giant nails and huge concrete blocks, when farmers converged on various border crossing points around the capital in November last year to protest against the Centre’s

three agricultural laws. However, the removal of barricades and cemented blocks has not caused any relief to daily commuters. The Delhi Police had reopened the route to Delhi on Friday, however, the barricades put up by farmers and the Uttar Pradesh police have yet not been removed. Commuters going towards Delhi via

the Delhi-Meerut expressway are not been allowed to proceed and were advised to return. According to the details, commuters were advised to take another route due to barricading, in the wake of farmers’ protests. Meanwhile, soon after the news of police removing barricades reached BKU, it has now issued.

Farmers have been protesting since November 26 last year against the three enacted farm laws: Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; the Farmers Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and farm Services Act 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today hit out at the BJP on increasing fuel prices. He pointed out that crude oil prices were much higher when the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) was in power and yet, people are forced to pay more now when fuel prices in the international market are lower. “During the UPA government, international fuel prices reached $140 per

barrel. Today, fuel prices are much lower in the international market but still, you pay more. Today India is taxing fuel at the highest rate in the world,” he was quoted as saying The Congress leader is in the coastal state for a daylong visit ahead of assembly elections due early next year. Many experts have also suggested that India lower its taxes on fuel, which at around 54 percent is one of the highest in the world.
