The triple talaq bill will uphold women’s dignity The main argument advanced in Lok Sabha against the proposed bill to make instant triple talaq a punishable offence was prefaced by the assertion that opposition to the introduction of the bill does not mean defence of the triple talaq. Instead, the bill was opposed because it seeks to conflate the civil and the criminal laws. This statement betrays total ignorance about the history of how triple talaq, despite being bad in religion, became good in law. Even the Muslim Personal Law Board, in its affidavit submitted in Supreme Court (SC) in Shayara Bano case, has admitted that this form of divorce is a departure from the procedure sanctioned by the Quran and Prophetic traditions), an unjust, sinful and prohibited act. In fact, the Personal Law Board had agreed with almost all the religious and legal grounds on which the petitioners had argued that the practice of triple talaq deserves to be outlawed. The only point of difference was that the Personal Law Board had challenged the jurisdiction of the SC to intervene in this matter. But at the same time, the board had given an undertaking, through an additional affidavit, that the members themselves shall start a campaign against the practice of triple talaq, will suitably amend the model marriage contract and give a call to boycott those who resort to triple talaq. But later it became clear that all these assurances were meant to be tactical to persuade the court not to give its verdict and leave this matter wholly to this body of clerics. It is important to remember that the Personal Law Board had initially welcomed the judgment of the SC but a few days later at its session at Bhopal the board made highly critical remarks and went to the extent of saying that notwithstanding the SC verdict, the practice of triple divorce shall continue as before. The assertion made by Personal Law Board proved to be right. In a short period of three months, more than 100 cases of triple talaq were reported from all over the country. In all these cases the women were instantly thrown out of their marital homes and the board did not think it right to come to their rescue by explaining to the community that this form of divorce, which in any case is bad in religion, has also become bad in law. The board did not give any call for social boycott - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara of these offenders. Editor

In the latest US Fed policy meeting last week, the US central bank hinted an interest rate cut if the economic outlook weakens. Lower interest rates usually decrease the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like bullion. Gold usually trades higher during times of economic or political uncertainties. This was due to lower domestic prices due to a strong rupee and a surge in Indian jewellery demand during the traditional gold-buying wedding season. Looking ahead, the ongoing US-China trade frictions are likely to put more strain on the global economy, which continue to support gold’s safe-haven appeal. in unfair fines. "The repassing is mainly to ensure that the vehicle is safe to ferry students. However, many of the requirements are contradictory and if we attempt to comply with one, we will automatically violate others. This causes crackdown on such vehicles. Authorities have begun a drive and are charging the drivers fines. In this condition, we cannot operate. We are not in favour of a strike but we have no course left,"

AMC receives complains of waterlogged roads from 36 areas, uneven roads hampers traffic movement in the city

AHMEDABAD: Overnight rains in the city has uprooted at least 183 trees and caused waterlogging at 36 areas according to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's report. Heavy rains accompainied

by high winds also caused a hoarding to collapse. Road cave-ins were also reported at many places.Rains began at night and continued till morning. The city received 28.92 mm rains in 24 hours ending at 4 pm on Monday, raising total seasonal rain

to 100.58 mm. However, waterlogged roads caused inconvenience to the citizens in the morning hours. According to a statement by AMC, the overflow of drainage lines hampered the movement near Nirnaynagar

underpass. The repair work of the broad gauge was being carried out by the railways. An advertisement hoarding at Vraj Complex in near Anandnagar too collapsed at midnight. No casualty was reported. The destruction once

again exposed AMC's planning and preparedness of monsoon, alleged Congress. "If people have to face so much hardships in an overnight rain, then the situation will only worsen in case of heavy rainfall in the coming days. State government's instruction to not to carry out civic works, especially digging of the roads, post May have not been adhered to. Also post the digging, the roads are unevenly levelled, causing cave-ins. This is nothing but gross negligence on the part of AMC," said Dinesh Sharma, leader of the opposition in AMC. Amul Bhatt, chairman of the Standing Committee of AMC claimed that the pre-monsoon action plan by AMC is a success. "Water is being pumped out of all the low-lying places.

Last fortnight the country witnessed widespread protests by doctors against violent attacks. It can only be termed animal behaviour when anyone attacks doctors. Even animals usually do not attack until and unless provoked. How can human beings behave like provoked ferocious animals is surely something for behavioural scientists to worry about. Reason simply cannot explain it.
