gns news : Auckland/Sydney As the world bid adieu to 2018, several countries across the globe ushered in the New Year with much aplomb and fanfare. New Zealand, Australia, Samoa, South Korea, Japan and parts of Russia welcomed 2019 with magnificent fireworks and joyous celebrations. In New Zealand's biggest city, Auckland, thousands of revellers gathered to ring in the New Year

around Sky Tower, with spectacular fireworks bursting from the top of the 1,076-foot building. In fact, authorities have allowed partygoers in Auckland to make as much noise as they want as the cops have promised not to attend to any noise complaints during those particular hours. Meanwhile, parts of Australia, including Sydney, also celebrated the New Year, with revellers witnessing a magnificent show of fireworks at the Opera House.

Revellers did not let the thunderstorms in the evening dampen their spirits as thousands flocked to witness the dazzling show of fireworks at the harbour in Sydney. Notably, Samoa has the distinction of being the first country to welcome New Year 2019. What’s more interesting is that American Samoa, which is merely an hour’s flight away from Samoa, will ring in the New Year almost 12 hours later due to

‘Watchman’ PM looting India Rahul’s jibe at Modi over RBI report on loan defaulters New Delhi

Three days after RBI stated that banks lost Rs 41,167 crore to fraud in 2017-18, Rahul Gandhi on Monday said that the "watchman" is looting India by helping his close friends, who default on hefty bank loans and flee the country. The Congress party president tweeted, "He (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) is working as a thief by portraying himself as the watchman of the country. He gave away Rs 41,167 crore of bank money to his close aides.) The Congress president claimed that with the amount of Rs 41,167 crore, the central government could have waived off the loan of farmers of three states, opened 40 AIIMS and

the time difference. On the other hand, small parts of Russia also celebrated the New Year, with actors and dancers participating in the festivities, dressed as characters such as Father Frost and Snow Maiden, The Telegraph reported. Meanwhile, revellers in Tokyo took to social media to post photographs and videos of fireworks displays and celebrations as the island nation welcomed the New Year.

run MNREGA for at least one year without any hassle. The RBI on Friday issued a report, saying that fraudsters in the financial year 2017-18, looted Rs 41,167.7 crore from the banking system, which is 72 per cent more than the previous year's Rs 23,933 crore. In the year 2017-18, a little less than 6000 cases of bank fraud were reported as against 5,076 in the previous

fiscal. "Current figures show that the cases of fraud are increasing for the last four years - 2013-14 saw cases of fraud worth Rs 10,170 crore. In comparison, this figure has increased four times in 2017-18. In 2017-18, however, fraud related to off-balance sheet operations, foreign currency transactions, deposit accounts, and cyber-activity is important.

Former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar on Monday surrendered before a Delhi court to serve life sentence in connection with a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case in which he was convicted by the Delhi High Court. He surrendered before Metropolitan Magistrate Aditi Garg. The 73-year-old former Congress leader was sentenced to life for the "remainder of his natural life" by the Delhi High Court on December 17. It had set a deadline of December 31 for Kumar to surrender. The high court had on December 21 declined his plea to extend the time of his surrender by a month.

Jaitley was responding to Rahul Gandhi's 'nobody killed Sohrabuddin' comment he made on day of judgement.

‘Who killed probe?’ Jaitley slams Rahul over remark on Sohrabuddin verdict gns news : New Delhi

Taking Congress head on over the Sohrabuddin case, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said the appropriate question for party president Rahul Gandhi to ask would be, who killed the investigation in this case. The Special CBI Judge, Mumbai, who deals with CBI cases had acquitted all accused in Sohrabuddin case, the minister said, adding "more relevant than the Order of the Acquittal is the observation of the Judge that in the investigation, from the very beginning, Investigating Agency did not investigate the case professionally in order to find out the truth but to divert it towards certain political persons."Responding to the comment of Gandhi on the day of the judgement that

Army foils Pak BAT team’s bid to carry out attack on New Year’s eve gns news : Srinagar

A major Border Action Team (BAT) action has been foiled along the Line of Control (LoC) in Naugam sector of Jammu and Kashmir by killing two intruders who are "likely Pakistani soldiers", the Army said on Monday. "Army foiled a major BAT attempt to strike a forward post along the Line of Control in Naugam Sector in the early hours of Sunday," an Army spokesman said. He said the intruders attempted to come in by exploiting the thick jungles close to the LoC

and were assisted by heavy covering fire of high calibre weapons such as mortars and rocket launchers from the Pakistani posts.

The Rajya Sabha Monday failed to initiate a discussion on the contentious Triple Talaq Bill, with a united opposition led by the Congress demanding that the draft law be sent to a select committee for scrutiny. With the government pressing for a discussion on the Muslim women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) bill, 2018 after Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad tabled the same, the opposition stuck to its demand for sending the bill to a select

committee. Amid a stalemate between the government and the opposition over the issue, the house failed to transact any significant business during the day. The House was adjourned for the day amid din over the issue. Earlier the House was adjourned twice during the day with an adjournment in the morning following protests by AIADMK members over the Cauvery issue. The House also saw another brief adjournment of 15 minutes in the afternoon soon after the Triple Talaq Bill was tabled.

"The movement was nonetheless detected by the vigilant Indian Army troops deployed along the LoC," he said. The spokesman said the fire-fight initiated by Pakistan was given strong retaliation by the Indian Army and the exchange of fire continued the whole night. "Own troops conducted prolonged search operations in thick jungles and difficult terrain conditions to ascertain the situation, which confirmed elimination of two likely Pakistani soldiers and resulted in recovery of a large cache of warlike stores.

'nobody killed Sohrabuddin', Jaitley said, "It would have been more appropriate if he had asked the right question, namely who killed Sohrabuddin case investigation, he would have got the right answer." Jaitley in his Facebook post titled: 'Who killed the Sohrabuddin Investigation' said that those who have recently shown a belated concern for institutional independence, "should

seriously introspect as to what they did to the CBI when they were in power." The minister further said that as Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, he had written a letter to the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on September 27, 2013, detailing the politicisation of the investigation in the Sohrabuddin, Tulsi Prajapati, Ishrat Jahan, Rajinder Rathore and the Haren Pandya cases.

‘Family balm’: Amit Shah fires salvo at Gandhis over AgustaWestland case gns news : New Delhi

In a series of tweets, BJP president Amit Shah on Monday fired multiple salvos on the Congress leadership for their alleged role in Rs 3,600 crore AgustaWestland VVIP chopper procurement scam. "Michel's lawyer has admitted that the paper was indeed passed on to him. He thought that it was a list of medicines, which could have been transparently given in any case. We have heard of Zandu Balm and Tiger Balm but what is this 'Family Balm' that every middleman wants," said

Shah in a tweet. "In any case, what must be told again and again is the Congress background of Michel's lawyer," said Shah in one of his tweets. "In the national interest, Michel's lawyer must tell us about the Existence of documents of 2008, which make a reference to Mrs. Gandhi. Evidently, the friendship between Michel and one family in India is time-tested and deep," he said in another tweet. In any case, what must be told again and again is the Congress background of Michel’s lawyer. The so called expulsion remains a SHAM.

2018 isn’t all gloomy: 5 districts offer hope Two-thirds of India’s 112 backward districts are in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The remaining are scattered across the country with a few in the Northeast. These districts identified in January 2018 for fast-track development represent the part of rural India that lags behind in basic services such as health, education and infrastructure, and have rightly come under the focus of policymakers. Under the “aspirational districts” programme, central and state officials are working closely to identify the strength of each district and use it to catalyse growth. NITI Aayog, which anchors the programme, has ranked these districts on their performance in key development areas of health and nutrition, education, farming, water resources, financial inclusion, skill development and access to basic infrastructure such as road, potable water and power. The rankings, first announced in June and based on data from states and the central government, as well as a survey of over 100,000 households, showed that several of these districts had reported improvement in elementary education over the 2017 national average. The second set of rankings, released on 27 December, shows that five districts have particularly made rapid progress—Kupwara in Jammu and Kashmir, Ranchi in Jharkhand, Siddharthnagar and Fatehpur in Uttar Pradesh, and Jamui in Bihar. While districts such as Siddharthnagar made progress on several fronts, including education and basic infrastructure, Pakur in Jharkhand remain backward in education, health, nutrition and basic infrastructure. Pakur, which ranks at the bottom of the list, at 111, has plenty of room for improvement. Wayanad in Kerala, which was affected by floods recently, is not part of the latest ranking. Virudhunagar in Tamil Nadu has the best overall score among all the backward districts. The incremental progress made by the five districts offer hope that with a focused approach, a quick course correction in the development trajectory could be achieved. Plugging the development gaps and improving the quality of life of people in these backward areas is important, considering that India has crossed only the halfway mark in achieving sustainable development goals (SDG) such as removal of poverty and inequality, which it had adopted in 2015 along with 192 other nations. NITI Aayog is also monitoring the work on achieving SDG goals. Improving basic services and ensuring livelihood of people in backward districts is of tremendous importance, considering that people are forced to migrate in search of a better life. Two key initiatives that will go a long way in achieving this goal are the Ayushman Bharat scheme, which offers health cover to 100 million vulnerable families, and the BharatNet project, which digitally connects all gram panchayats. Digital connectivity will link people in rural areas with urban centres, improving employment opportunities. In a nation that is set to be the fifth largest economy in the world, bridging the development gap is vital to social - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara and political stability. Editor

Prajnesh Gunneswaran knocked out of Maharashtra Open gns news : New Delhi A rusty Prajnesh Gunneswaran was far from his best and was knocked out of the Tata Open Maharashtra, losing in straight sets to American Michael Mmoh on Monday. The game which earned him impressive results in

the 2018 season was nowhere to be seen as he lost 5-7 3-6 to his American opponent, ranked 103, in one hour and 14 minutes. Steve Darcis, who is coming out of a long injury lay-off, knocked out sixth seed Roberto Carballes Baena 6-3 6-4 to create first upset of the tournament while

Serena Williams wins on return but US lose Hopman Cup opener gns news : New Delhi

gns news : Mumbai A day before the start of the Premier Badminton League in India last week, three of the world best shuttlers – Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu and Carolina Marin – directed their guns towards the Badminton World Federation. All three had a similar complaint – regarding the heavy scheduling of tournaments in a calendar year. “By reducing the number of tournaments, there is little chance of players getting injured. Why have 20 tournaments a year? They can just do four, five Grand Slams with more money in,” Nehwal, who returned from a careerthreatening knee injury last year said. “At this rate, we definitely can’t give our best or be at the highest level all the time. I would say that we should have limited tournaments and prepare well,” Sindhu added.Olympic gold medallist Marin went a step further and said that the tournament scheduling is not “professional”. “If you want to be professional, they cannot do this to the players. Right now they are forcing players to play so many tournaments and we are getting injured,” she said.

Serena Williams made a winning return to competitive action at the Hopman Cup on Monday but could not prevent the United States from losing 2-1 to Greece in their opening round-robin match. Williams, playing her first competitive match since losing the U.S. Open final to Naomi Osaka, powered past Maria Sakkari 7-6(3) 6-2 to level the Group B contest at 1-1 after Stefanos Tsitsipas had beaten American Frances Tiafoe 6-3 6-7(3) 6-3. The 37-year-old, who had both ankles strapped and required medical attention in her singles match, then combined with Tiafoe but could not overcome Sakkari and Tsitsipas who won the mixed doubles rubber 4-1 1-4 4-2 to seal the tie. “It’s great to be back out in match day, and it’s great to be back out here,” said Williams, who will be chasing a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open next month. Williams made a several unforced errors early on but overpowered her opponent with 13 aces and 29 winners, claiming two breaks en route to a comfortable win. “It was my first match back, she played unbelievable.

Russia’s Evgeny Donskoy accounted for eight seed Spaniard Pablo Andujar 6-3 5-7 7-6(6). It has been a decent venue for Prajnesh as he made two Challenger level finals here — one just weeks back –but free-flowing unforced errors never let him dictate the points.

Banking sector on "course to recovery" as NPAs recede: RBI gns news : Mumbai

The banking sector is on "course to recovery" as the afflicting non-performing assets recede, but state-run lenders need reforms in governance, Governor Shaktikanta Das said on Monday. The weaker ones among the public sector banks need to be supported through recapitalisation, the Governor said in his foreword to RBI's halfyearly financial stability report (FSR). "After a prolonged period of stress, the banking sector appears to be on course to recovery as the load of impaired assets recedes," Das, who took charge earlier this month after the sudden exit of Urjit Patel, said. He pointed out that the period till September has seen a decline in gross NPA ratios -- the first such dip in three years -- and also pointed out at improving provision coverage ratio, which is the ability of a bank to withstand stress, as a positive. According to the FSR, gross NPAs ratio declined to 10.8 per cent in September 2018 from 11.5 per cent in March 2018, while for the state-run lenders, the same improved to 14.8 per cent in September 2018 from close to 15.2 per cent in March 2018. Under the baseline scenario, the GNPA ratio of all banks may come down to 10.3 per cent by March 2019 from 10.8

per cent in September 2018, the report said. The Governor said even though the current NPA levels are high, stress tests done by the RBI have pointed to an improvement in the ratio in future. Having done a lot of work on the NPA front, which started with the accelerated recognition through the asset quality review, Das said there is a need for operational improvements at the state-run lenders which account for a bulk of the dud assets. "The immense effort put in by the stakeholders so far is required to be buttressed with substantive reforms in governance and oversight regime, supported by recapitalisation of weak PSBs," he said in the comments, which come days after the Centre committed an additional Rs 41,000 crore in FY19 for the recapitalisation.

Govt not seeking RBI reserves to meet fiscal deficit: Jaitley New Delhi

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Monday said the government was not seeking Reserve Bank surplus to meet fiscal deficit but to utilise them for accelerating poverty alleviation programmes and recapitalising the stateowned banks. Replying to a debate on the second batch of supplementary demands for grants in the Lok Sabha, the Minister said that the Modi government has the best track record of keeping fiscal deficit under check. The House later passed supplementary demand for grants for the current fiscal to provide additional expenditure of Rs 85,948.86 crore, about half of which is for capital infusion in public sector banks. Referring to the issues concerning the Economic Capital Framework (ECF) of RBI, Jaitley said

that central banks of most of the countries keep a reserve of 8 per cent, while some conservative central banks maintain 14 per cent reserves. The RBI was maintaining a reserve of 28 per cent, he said, adding the expert commitee will decide on the appropriate reserve of the central bank so that surplus funds could be utilised for funding poverty alleviation programmes and recapitalising the state-owned banks. "This government has the best track record than any other previous government in managing fiscal deficit. We do not need RBI reserves to manage the fiscal deficit, Jaitley said. He said the Modi government has brought down fiscal deficit and kept inflation and the Current Account Deficit (CAD) under check, while India retained the fastest growing economy tag for 5 years. The Finance Minister further said that it was only during the Modi government tenure that India became the fastest growing major economy in the world, ahead of China. Jaitley also said that demonetisation and the Goods and Services Tax (GST) has helped increase the tax base and allocate more funds for poverty alleviation and social sector programmes.

RCom, Reliance Jio extend validity of asset sale pact to June 28 gns news : Mumbai

Reliance Communications and Reliance Jio announced Monday that they have extended the terms of an agreement for sale of wireless assets of the Anil Ambani owned firm. The move comes at a time when Reliance Communication's spectrum sale deal has been hanging fire, pending requisite clearance from the telecom department."Reliance Jio lnfocomm Limited, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries Limited, extended the term of the definitive agreement for the acquisition of specified assets of Reliance Communications Limited and its affiliates to 28th June 2019," Reliance Industries said in a regulatory filing Monday. The acquisition is subject to receipt of requisite approvals from governmental and regulatory authorities, consents from all lenders, release of all encumbrances on the said assets and other conditions, it said.In a separate filing, Reliance Communications said the company and Reliance Jio have "extended the validity of the agreements signed on 28th December 2017 for sale of towers, fiber, MCNs and spectrum of RCOM and its affiliates to 28th June 2019"."The transactions are to be consummated subject to various approvals that are presently in progress," RCom added. Reliance Communications has been urging the telecom department to grant it the "long-awaited no-objection certificate" to comply with a Supreme Court order in "letter and spirit".Senior officials

of Reliance Communications and Reliance Jio had also met the telecom secretary this month to discuss outstanding issues raised by Department of Telecom (DoT) over payment related to spectrum sale deal between the two companies. The Anil Ambani-owned company had maintained that it remains committed to discharging any outstanding or disputed amount subject to final adjudication.Reliance Communications had earlier asserted that the requirement of giving bank guarantee as per DoT's demand has been substituted by the orders of telecom tribunal and the Supreme Court, and that its unit Reliance Realty had provided a non-disposal undertaking and corporate guarantee."Hence, compliance with the trading guidelines is met," RCom had asserted in an earlier statement. However, the DoT has, so far, held to its position that the deal cannot be cleared unless there is clarity on payment of dues and associated charges, particularly as the Mukesh Ambani-led Jio has refused to take any payment liability of his younger sibling's firm RCom to conclude the spectrum trading deal between the two firms.

The Vatican spokeman, Greg Burke, and his deputy resign suddenly Vatican City

The Vatican spokesman, Greg Burke, and his deputy resigned suddenly Monday amid an overhaul of the Vatican’s communications operations that coincides with a troubled period in Pope Francis’ papacy. In a tweet, Burke said he and his deputy, Paloma Garcia Ovejero, had resigned effective January 1. Francis accepted the resignation Monday, the Vatican said in a statement. “At this time of transition in Vatican communications, we think it’s best the Holy Father is completely free to assemble a new team,” Burke wrote. He and Garcia both thanked the pope. “A stage is ending. Thank you for these two

and a half years,” Garcia tweeted. Francis named a longtime member of the Vatican’s communications operations, Alessandro Gisotti, as an interim replacement. The pope has recently overhauled the Vatican’s media operations for the second time by ousting the longtime editor of the Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano and naming a new director of editorial content for all Vatican media, the Italian journalist Andrea Tornielli. The resignations clearly took the new team by surprise.

gns news : Washington

U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren took the first step toward a 2020 presidential run on Monday, becoming the most prominent Democrat to announce a challenge to Republican President Donald Trump. Warren, a liberal firebrand from Massachusetts who has frequently clashed with Trump, said she had formed an exploratory committee, which will allow her to begin raising money as part of what is expected to be a crowded

Democratic field before the 2020 presidential election. Warren released a video in which she outlines her vision of a path to opportunity for all Americans, not just the wealthy. “Every person in America should be able to work hard, play by the same set of rules, & take care of themselves & the people they love,” she said in a Twitter post. “That’s what I’m fighting for, & that’s why I’m launching an exploratory committee for president. I need you with me.” Warren said in September she would take a “hard look” at running for the Democratic

nomination to challenge Republican Trump in 2020. The former Harvard Law School professor campaigned with Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in 2016 and attacked Trump as an “insecure money grubber” driven by greed and hate. Trump has cast aspersions on Warren’s claim to Native American ancestry, referring to her as “Pocahontas.” In October, Warren released a DNA analysis she said supported her assertion that she had Native American lineage that goes back six to 10 generations.
