Mr Shah sought to reassure the party cadres about its prospects, describing Mr Modi as an “invincible warrior”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi invincible warrior: Amit Shah BJP president Amit Shah on Friday projected the Lok Sabha polls as a clash of ideologies and likened it to the “decisive” third battle of Panipat between Marathas and the Afghan Army, saying the election results will be equally significant for the country. In his inaugural address at a party convention here, he dismissed the proposed grand alliance of Opposition parties as a “sham”, saying they are a disparate group with neither a leader nor any policy and have been brought together by their greed of power. He also asserted that the BJP wants Ram temple to be constructed at the earliest in Ayodhya, drawing huge applause from thousands of party members, and accused the Congress of

creating hurdles in the issue's early resolution in the Supreme Court. Amid a challenge from the likely Opposition unity and the BJP's defeat in the recent state polls, Mr Shah sought to reassure the party cadres about its prospects, describing Mr Modi as an “invincible warrior” he has known since 1987 and under whom not a single election has been lost. The party has the “world’s most popular, visionary, transparent and hardworking” leader in Modi.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah on Friday projected the Lok Sabha polls as a clash of ideologies and likened it to the “decisive” third battle of Panipat between Marathas and the Afghan Army, saying the election results will be equally significant for the country. Targeting the Opposition, Mr Shah said its proposed alliance has no nationwide relevance and the BJP had defeated each of them in 2014, claiming that the party is sure to come back to power with a bigger majority. Mamata accuses BJP of drama over ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’ Kolkata

Apparently standing by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over the controversial depiction of his role in the Bollywood film, ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’ Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday accused the BJP of making a "drama" ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. Without taking the name of present PM Narendra Modi she predicted that another film 'Disastrous PM' would be made on him in the future also. Describing PM Modi as "Gabbar Singh" the Trinamool Congress supremo bantered that he neither smiles nor can speak well. Addressing a programme at Barasat in North 24 Parganas CM Banerjee said, "A film has

She added, "Those who are making a drama on accidental PM they should watch another film: Disastrous PM. If a film can be made based on accidental PM then Disastrous PM has to be shown also. Remember, it will be made in the coming days. No one will spare

anyone." Her warning came after the Congress activists' massive protests which erupted outside the cinema halls in the city where the film 'The Accidental Prime Minister' was being screened after its release. Alarmed by the angry demonstrations by the Congress supporters who shouted slogans with party flags and burnt the effigy of PM Modi, the police stopped the screening of the film in at least two halls.

Breaking the glass ceiling at the final frontier It may be symbolic, but it signals a good beginning. So, the

Indian Space Research Organization’s (Isro) move to include women in the potential list of candidates for the country’s first manned space flight is a welcome one. Isro chairman K. Sivan told news agancy that the first flight might not be an all-male one. The flight launch—Isro plans to do it by the end of 2021—will thus not only mark the coming of age of the Indian space programme, but also that of the Indian woman. Sure, we have the sporting success of the Saina Nehwals and M.C. Mary Koms to be proud of, not to forget the Naina Kidwais and Arundhati Bhattacharyas in the financial sector. But having a presence in the country’s first manned space mission will add swagger and more to Indian womanhood. A country begging for heroes and messiahs needs such paragons, a testosterone-driven society even more so, especially considering the debasing political discourse from either side of the divide plunging to new lows every other day targeting women representatives. The Indian space agency’s mission is daunting. Isro is building a spacecraft that can accommodate up to three astronauts and remain in space for as many as seven days. The Indian Air Force will provide the candidates who will undergo a long, gruelling training before being sent on their journey of honour. And the prospect of a woman being part of India’s first space flight is one to look forward to. After all, a woman is as capable of achieving a mission’s target on its first flight as a man. And while we are at it, let’s not forget the many women scientists who are already part of the Indian space programme. Isro’s mission does not come a day too soon. China, which conducted its first manned space flight as far back as 2003, has energized the landscape, or let’s say spacescape, again. The US and Russia have been happy trading charges on spying, data theft and influencing elections, while cutting back on their space programmes. With space vacated for it, China last week in a world-first landed a spacecraft on the far side of the moon—a part of our satellite that never faces the Earth—and is thus difficult to reach. In a few years, it plans to launch its third space station and this one will be manned. Isro’s plans thus need all the push they require. That’s not to say India’s space programme hasn’t had several successes in the last few years. In 2014, the country put a spacecraft in Mars orbit, beating its Asian rivals and stupefying the Americans and the Europeans with its shoestring budget, and also that it was done at the first attempt. Isro rockets have so far launched more than 100 satellites. Its second lunar exploration mission, Chandrayaan-2, is set for its launch in the next two to three months. Does a woman on a space mission mark the final frontier? Certainly not. The women in this country have many barriers to cross—securing a ticket on a manned space flight is a very small but important one. In a country struggling to embrace the meaning of “Beti bachao, beti padhao”, an Indian woman in the country’s own space flight might just be the story those small village girls, currently burdened with the drudgery of domestic chores, need to - Kapilkumar M. Rohit Shetty closing in on Dada Kondke’s record gns, Mumbai

The maker of eight hit films that are in the Rs 100 crore club is within striking distance of the maker of nine Marathi films that hit the silver jubilee mark. Dada Kondke, well known as a director of renowned Marathi films had made it to the Guinness Book of World Records over 25 years ago for being the only filmmaker to deliver nine silver jubilee hits in a row. For those who came in late, silver jubilees were when a film ran in the theatres for a consecutive 25 weeks. More recently, with the

gns, Mumbai The recent launch of a patriotic number from Kangana Ranaut’s magnum opus Manikarnika was a good occasion for the actress who plays the role of the Queen of Jhansi to share more about the film. “I have worked in small films earlier, but this film is huge. Not in terms of budget, but because this was the first time I worked with the ‘Tridev’ of huge artists like Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy. They have given seven to eight magnificent songs. All of them are so wonderful, that we could not decide which song we should launch today.” Sharing her experience working on the sets with the ace singers, and writers Prasoon Joshi and Vijayendra Prasad, she says, “All the artistes standing along with me are well known figures from Bollywood. I am more than happy. Working with Prasoon Joshi was also a great experience as I got to learn a hugely different, meaningful, vocabulary from him.” As the film’s release date clashes with that of another biopic Thackeray, had she faced any pressure or had anyone approached her to change it? Kangana replies, “No one has told us to shift our release date and no one has approached us. It’s a big window and I think two films can easily release on the same date.”

India vs Australia 1st ODI: World Cup preparations begin for India and embattled Australia Sydney

After recording a historic Test series win against Australia earlier this month, India captain Virat Kohli was quick to declare that it was a bigger career achievement for him than winning the World Cup in 2011. “When we won the 2011 World Cup, I was the youngest member of the side. but I didn’t feel it then. Here, after coming three times, this win means something else,” he had said. The coach Ravi Shastri went a step further and said it was even bigger than the 1983 World Cup win. Perhaps, for the moment, it might be so for the Indian camp, who, in Shastri’s own words, had been preparing to win a series Down Under for 12 months. But in the world of cricket, the

Give what you have to give; it will come back to you, but do not think of that now. * Condemn none: if you can stretch out a helping hand, do so. If you cannot, fold your hands, bless your brothers, and let them go their own way. * All differences in this world are of degree, and not of kind, because oneness is the secret of everything. * If faith in ourselves had been more extensively taught and practiced, I am sure a very large portion of the evils and miseries that we have would have vanished.

US to make major changes in H-1B visa programme to attract talented professionals: Trump

US official says troop withdrawal from Syria has started

Donald Trump on Friday tweeted that his administration is planning an overhaul of US policies on H-1B visa and will encourage talented and highly-skilled people to pursue career options in the US. Washington

Tokyo Tokyo prosecutors indicted former Nissan Motor Co Ltd Chairman Carlos Ghosn on two new charges of financial misconduct on Friday, his lawyer said, adding to the legal challenges for the once-feted auto executive. Ghosn was charged with aggravated breach of trust for temporarily transferring personal investment losses to Nissan in 2008,

and for understating his compensation for three years, from 2015 to 2017, showed a statement from his lawyer, Motonari Otsuru. Otsuru said his team was applying for bail to release Ghosn, who has been detained since his Nov. 19 arrest. He had already been charged for under-reporting his income for the five years through 2015. It is uncommon for defendants in Japan who deny their charges to be granted bail ahead of trial.

to your stay, including a potential path to citizenship. We want to encourage talented and highly skilled people to pursue career options in the US,” Trump tweeted on Friday. Trump’s tweet comes as a good news for Indian professionals,

especially in the IT sector, who currently have to wait for nearly a decade to get a Green Card or permanent legal residency. In the first two years of his presidency, Trump administration made it tough for the H-1B visa holders over their overstay, extension and

issuing of new visa to them. The H-1B visa, most sought-after among Indian IT professionals, is a non-immigrant visa that allows US companies to employ foreign workers in speciality occupations that require theoretical or technical expertise.

After days of back and forth over US President Donald Trump’s decision to pullout American troops from Syria, a US military official said Friday the process of withdrawal has begun, declining to comment on specific timetables or movements. Col Sean Ryan, spokesman for the US-led coalition fighting the Islamic State group, said “the process of our

deliberate withdrawal from Syria” has started. “Out of concern for operational security, we will not discuss specific timelines, locations or troops movements,” the Baghdad-based official said in a statement emailed to The Associated Press. There were no other details, and it was not immediately clear how many vehicles or whether any troop units had withdrawn.

‘The whole country is a prison’: No sign of better rights in N.Korea, says UN

Human rights were noticeably absent from talks between Kim and the leaders of South Korea and the United States last year, over North Korea's nuclear weapons programme.

Seoul

Despite more than a year of international engagement and promises of economic reform by North Korea’s leaders, the human rights situation in the isolated country remains dire, a top U.N. rights official said on Friday. Blocked by the government from visiting North Korea, U.N. special rapporteur for human rights in North Korea Tomas Quintana visited South Korea this week as part of an

investigation that will be provided to the U.N. Human Rights Council in March. Noting that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has embarked on an effort to improve living conditions by focusing on economic development, Quintana said his preliminary findings showed those efforts had not translated into improvements in the lives of most people. “The fact is, that with all the positive developments the world has witnessed in the last year, it is all the more regrettable that the reality

for human rights on the ground remains unchanged, and continues to be extremely serious,” he told reporters at a briefing in Seoul. “In all areas related to the enjoyment of economic and social rights, including health, housing, education, social security, employment, food, water and sanitation, much of the country’s population is being left behind.” North Korea denies human rights abuses and says the issue is used by the international community as a political ploy to isolate it.
