Average GDP growth in last 4 years best since 1991: PM Modi ss news, Gandhinagar

Inaugurating the ninth edition of Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called India an investment destination and told captains of the industry that this is the best time to invest in India. Modi maintained that the average GDP growth of 7.3 per cent in the last four years is the highest under any Indian government since the economy was liberalised in 1991 and that the rate of inflation remained the lowest at 4.6 per cent, better than any government since 1991. He also said, “In the last four years, we have jumped 65 places in the Global Rankin of World Bank’s Doing Business Report —from 142 in 2014 to 77 now…” Modi addressed the gathering at the Main Convention Hall of Mahatma Mandir and put forth various initiatives

undertaken by his government in the fields of infrastructure, health, taxation, energy, environment, etc. Modi said the past four years have seen maximum capacity addition and generation of electricity. “For the first time, India has become a net exporter of electricity. We have distributed LED bulbs on a massive scale,

resulting in huge energy savings. We have installed transmission lines at an unprecedented pace. Our speed in road construction has almost doubled. We have done unprecedented capacity addition in major ports. Rural road connectivity is now 90 per cent.” He said new railway tracks, gauge conversion,

Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Friday extended support to TMC chief Mamata Banerjee for her mega initiative to bring together Opposition parties at Brigade Parade Ground, even as political leaders from across the country started arriving here for the rally on Saturday. In an open letter to the West Bengal Chief Minister, Rahul said, “We commend the great people of Bengal who have historically been in the forefront of defending our ideals. I extend my support to Mamata di on this show of unity and hope that we send a powerful message of a united India together… “The entire opposition is united in our belief that true nationalism and development can only be defended on the tested pillars of democracy, social justice and secularism, ideas that BJP and Mr Modi are intent on destroying… The Congress is expected to be represented by Mallikarjun Kharge and Abhishek Manu

Singhvi at the TMC’s ‘United India Rally’ which, Opposition leaders said, would be a show of Opposition unity against the BJP. The importance of regional parties and their unity in the run-up to Lok Sabha polls is expected to be highlighted. Barring the CPM, BJD, TRS, AIMIM, Shiv Sena and YSR Congress, all other regional parties and leaders, including Hardik Patel and Jignesh Mevani, are expected to share the dais. From Friday afternoon, leaders such as former PM H D Deve Gowda, Sharad Pawar, N Chandrababu Naidu, Akhilesh Yadav, M K Stalin and Hemant Soren started arriving here.

doubling and electrification of tracks has doubled under his government. “We are de-bottlenecking execution of major projects on a regular basis through an online process. Our public private partnership (PPP) regime for infrastructure has been made more investor-friendly,” he said. On Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), Modi said India is now “one of the most open countries”. He said, “More than 90 per cent approvals have been put on automatic route. Such measures have propelled our economy into a high growth path. In the last four years, we have received FDI worth $263 billion — this is 45 per cent of the FDI received over the last 18 years.” Maintaining that the government has made doing business “smarter”, Modi said, “We are insisting on ITbased transactions in procurement and purchases of the government.

Kerala flaunts list of 51 women who entered Sabarimala temple, with many a slip New Delhi It was meant to be a list of 51 women under the age of 50 to substantiate the state’s claim, complete with name, age, Aadhaar numbers, addresses, and phone numbers. But by Friday evening, it left many red faces in the Kerala government as it scrambled to explain contradictions in the list. The list, prepared by Kerala police, names women who have entered the Sabarimala temple since the Supreme Court lifted the age restriction on entry of women to the hill shrine. Consider this: Not one name on the list was from Kerala, all women were in the age range of 41-49. The Indian Express contacted 20 women from Tamil Nadu, four from Andhra Pradesh and one from Goa. The responses varied. In at least nine cases, men answered and said they had no connection to the woman on the list.

Any comparison of the cost for the MMRCA contract for 126 aircraft which never materialised with the cost of the 36 aircraft procured in 2016 under the NDA government is “fallacious”, a Defence Ministry spokesperson said in response to a report in The Hindu newspaper that the Rafale aircraft bought in 2016 was 41 per cent more expensive. He also said that “selectively picking certain aspects while ignoring others, creates doubts by vested interests on a matter of vital national security”. “All the issues have been answered in detail by the Government at various fora and most recently by the Raksha Mantri in an open debate in the Parliament,” the Defence Ministry spokesperson said, adding, “The deal for the purchase of 36 Rafale fighter jets in 2016 achieved the

Without giving timelines, he said Jio and Reliance Retail, which has over 9,000 stores across 6,500-plus towns in the country, will launch “a unique new commerce

Jio has over 280 million subscribers with internet access. He also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take steps to end increasing “data colonisation” by global corporations, saying Indians should own and control their own data.

Dismissing a news report of price escalation in the Rafale deal, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley Friday said it was based on “fudged arithmetic”. In a series of tweets, the minister said the Supreme Court has examined the prices and the CAG is examining the same. “The new article on Rafale is based on fudged arithmetic – ignore the escalation of the 2007 non-deal offer and compare it with

the 2016 price and invent a scam,” he said. “The fudged arithmetic of a compulsive contrarian can hardly be objective… Fudged arithmetics does not add to the credibility of its creator,” he said. Jaitley’s comments came after a report in ‘The Hindu’ claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to buy 36 aircraft instead of the 126 asked for by the Indian Air Force pushed the price of each jet up by 41.42 per cent.

Why India’s sedition law needs to be buried Early this week, the Delhi Police filed a charge sheet

against 10 people, including student leaders Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid, and Anirban Bhattacharya, in a sedition case for allegedly raising “anti-national slogans” during an event on the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus in February 2016. This fits a disturbing pattern. There have been many incidents in recent times where “misguided” people have been termed “anti-national”. The sentiment could have been demonstrated through a slogan, a cheer, a statement, protest against a nuclear power project, or an innocuous post on social media. In all these cases, the state, across regimes, has filed charges of sedition. Of course, we know that sedition can’t be applied to instances of criticism of the government or a political functionary. More importantly, words alone are not enough for such a charge to be slapped. Incitement to violence is the most crucial ingredient of the offence of sedition. What happened inside JNU three years ago might outrage many people, but it is a shame that the world’s largest democracy is so fragile, that it has to suppress the opinion of its youth and go to the extent of dictating to its premier educational institutions on how those within them should think and what they should think. In times like these, it seems like a sham to say that criticism of the state is the essence of democracy. In raking up the JNU issue after three years, the government is not shying away from playing politics around patriotism and nationality. Going through the numbers that the National Crime Records Bureau puts out every year, it is clear that despite the rise in sedition cases, convictions happen in barely a few. Even if these people are not convicted, the slapping of these charges is a way the governments over the years have been sending a strong message to its own people—obey or be ready to face consequences. Before Independence, this charge was used by the British to suppress the freedom movement. Ironically, the same draconian law has become a tool that the country is now using against its own people. Instead of critically analysing why citizens, be they in Kashmir or Chhattisgarh or Bhima Koregaon, are driven to dissent, the government is using an iron-fist policy—with the sedition law playing a leading role—to completely shut out contrarian views. The argument used against the scrapping of the sedition law is that the Supreme Court has repeatedly observed that the mere possibility of misuse of a provision does not per se invalidate the legislation. While the arguments are right in their own way, in a country where public discourse automatically reduces to binaries, it is hard to imagine navigating through the dark areas that lie between the actual law and its implementation on the ground. Till then, to uphold the idea of democracy that the founders of the Constitution envisioned, India should eschew the word sedition from its statute books - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara and everyday vocabulary. Editor

India — the world’s largest importer of defence equipment — seems to be emulating China after it clocked multi-fold growth exporting defence equipment in the last three years. Ministry of Defence officials attending the Vibrant Gujarat Summit on Friday said that India is all set to cross Rs 10,000 crore of defence equipment exports by the end of March this year. “About 15 years ago, China was the largest importer of arms and ammunition and now they are the third largest exporter of arms. We have a dubious distinction of being the largest importer. Can we turn it around? Can we follow the footsteps of China,” asked Ajay Kumar, secretary, Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence, while delivering the keynote address at the “Opportunities for Industry in Defence and Aerospace””seminar at the Vibrant Gujarat Summit. According to him, the

steps taken by the Indian government is helping India bring a shift. “Indian industry is doubling defence exports from the country for the last three years. About three years ago, the exports were just Rs 1,500 crore. Last year that figure reached Rs

4,500 crore, and this year by November end we have clocked Rs 7,500 crore, and by end of March 2019, we will cross the Rs 10000 crore mark,” Kumar said. “I doubt if Indian industry sells, Rs 10,000 cr worth of equipment to the Indian

defence forces. This silent change is happening because we are looking at larger market,” he added. The secretary also informed the gathering that India has received Rs 4,000 crore of Foreign Direct Investment in the defence sector.

With effects of climate change being felt the world over, industries are going back to the drawing board to make their operations more environment friendly. The automotive industry in particular is expected to take the lead for providing sustainable mobility solutions. Globally, many automobile markets are witnessing a steep demand growth for Electric Vehicles on the back of lowering technology costs, supportive governmental policies and stringent emission regulations. Indian market is in the initial stages of electric mobility

evolution and is expected to witness higher penetration in future supported by the declared intent and supportive actions of the Indian government. In June 2018, Tata Motors set up a separate electric mobility business vertical, and appointed Mr. Shailesh Chandra to lead the same. Tata Motors is playing a lead role in proactively driving the electric mobility in the country. To build a sustainable future for India, the company has been working collaboratively on various electric and hybrid vehicle solutions in the commercial vehicle space and is simultaneously working on electrification in the passenger vehicle front.

Pakistan may view a weak and destabilised Afghanistan as preferable to a strong and unified one, according to a Congressional report which also highlights India’s lack of desire to pursue a deeper defence cooperation with Kabul. The report “Afghanistan: Background and US Policy in Brief” prepared by the Congressional Research Service (CRS) comes amidst intensification of efforts by the Trump

administration to hold peace talks with the Taliban by seeking help of Pakistan. US special envoy to Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad Thursday held talks with Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary in Islamabad after extensive discussions in Kabul as part of his efforts to arrange the first-ever direct talks between the Taliban and the Afghan government. Khalilzad arrived in Pakistan to seek Islamabad’s help to convince the Taliban to return to the negotiating table to end the 17-year-long Afghan war.

“Pakistan may view a weak and destabilised Afghanistan as preferable to a strong, unified Afghan state (particularly one led by a Pashtun-dominated government in Kabul; Pakistan has a large Pashtun minority),” the CRS said in its report for lawmakers on Thursday. However, it said that at least some Pakistani leaders had stated that instability in Afghanistan could rebound to Pakistan’s detriment; Pakistan has struggled with indigenous Islamist militants of its own.
