India has found itself a new hero in Virat Kohli

“Incredibly fantastic,” exclaimed the original little master after India beat Australia in the T20 league match (NDTV 24×7). Make that “after Virat beat Australia” and forgive Sunil Gavaskar his double superlative: Kohli was incredible and fantastic so who cares about grammatical niceties? So incredible and so fantastic that news channels just couldn’t resist: They simply had to compare him with the little master-blaster: “Is Kohli better than Sachin?” (CNN IBN), “Is Virat the new Sachin?” (NDTV 24×7). They hurled statistics at their panelists like bouncers. The likes of Gavaskar, “Deano” Jones (NDTV) and Sourav Ganguly, Nasser Hussain (India Today) weaved and ducked out of harm’s way by repeating in their own words what K. Srikkanth said in his inimitable style: Sachin Tendulkar is Sachin Tendulkar, Gavaskar is Gavaskar and Virat is Virat — which nobody can deny! (CNN-IBN). Cricket commentators during the match — Harsha Bhogle, V.V.S. Laxman, Shoaib Akhtar, Kapil Dev and others were confronted with the same googly and patted it out safely, just like the other cricketers (Star Sports). Since this was extremely tedious for viewers and not what they wanted to hear at all, the question was tweaked: Okay, is Virat the better finisher of a game? They all heaved a sigh of relief (phew!) and said, he was the best finisher in the game. But that wasn’t the end of it — we still had to hear from the man himself. When Sachin T was asked to comment on Virat K, he met it with that straight bat of his: He lavished Kohli with praise without anointing him his successor and carefully praised the entire team for its efforts (India Today). Dead ball. After Kohli’s one-man rescue act, news TV went ga-ga: Aaj Tak even replayed him dancing Gangnam style during an earlier show to prove that he was fun and very much today’s man. No praise was too extravagant for the Delhi cricketer: Superlatives flew off tongues like fours off Kohli’s bat. As we have discovered, cricketers-cum-commentators can be loud, colourful characters. None more so than Very Very Special Laxman. On Sunday, he appeared on the analysis show after India had beaten Australia wearing a pink polka dot shirt under a blue and white check blazer, an orange kerchief peeking out of its pocket, with dark blue trousers, brown shoes and a gold watch. Such magnificence cannot be matched so Akhtar was dressed discreetly in black and white. Meanwhile, Deepak Chaurasia (India News) seems to have taken our advice of last week when we suggested that stuffy TV news anchors should lighten up a little in this season of T20.

The Mumbai police are in the process of sending a Letter Rogatory (LR) to a US-based court in connection with a complaint lodged by actor Hrithik Roshan earlier about a fake email address. The police will issue the LR, a formal request from an Indian court to a foreign court, to seek details of the fake e-mail address from the e-mail service provider headquartered in USA. The police registered an FIR last week after the actor alleged a person posing as him was communicating with a “young lady fan” using an ID (hroshan@email.com) that did not belong to him. An officer said they

would need at least one of the e-mails sent from the fake ID to investigate where the mail had originated, and track down the accused. In his complaint, the actor said that a “young lady fan” had told him she was communicating with him on hroshan@email. The actor told her that the email address did not belong to him. The police have asked Roshan to provide

details about the fan so they could approach her and get the emails she received from the fake address. “Since he himself has not received any e-mails from the impersonator, we told him to give us details of this person who received the emails. We can then try to find where the e-mails originated from and that will help us track down the sender, said an officer.

It’s a huge responsibility to play Azhar: Emraan Hashmi Agency | New Delhi

For someone who knew about cricket as much as an average Indian would, actor Emraan Hashmi has been making news for his close resemblance to former Indian cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin. The teaser that released last year got Emraan much praise for adopting the gait and body language of the cricketer-turned-politician. And now when the first look of the film sees him sitting on a bench, with a bag of money at his feet, a metaphor for the match-fixing scandal. Talking about it,

Actress Sonam Kapoor, whose last film “Neerja” was widely appreciated, has not signed any new project after the movie’s release. And this, she says, is stressing her out. Asked if she has taken on anything new, Sonam said : “No, I haven’t signed anything and it’s stressing me out that I haven’t.” In “Neerja”, Sonam played a real life character — a flight attendant who displays bravado on a hijacked plane to save the lives of passengers by risking her own. Sonam admits that the portrayal of women in films has

become stronger over the years, but she still feels that in terms of remuneration, discrimination against actresses exists. she said: “It is slowly changing, but it’s a far way off despite the numbers that ‘Neerja’ has done and despite the numbers my films have done.” “I have been a part of female-centric films but we are still only opening to 700 screens.” “It’s not about what the industry is paying you… It’s about whether the audience wants to see the film or not. If my film is going to open at Rs.6 crore, is it okay for the producer to pay me that money or not,” she said.

Shah Rukh Khan is already making news with his latest to-be-released film ‘Fan’ where fans are actually waiting for the film to release. Amidst all that craziness, SRK revealed a picture from the sets of his next film ‘Raees’. And believe us, Shah Rukh is flying - literally. SRK took to Instagram to share a new photo from Raees which shows an intense action sequence from the movie. And he is not even attached to any wires. He is seen holding a gun - in air. SRK captioned the picture, “Action Director Ravi sir & Cinematography team of Mohanan sir is making me fly. Ranveer Singh has come a long way ever since he made his debut with Band Baaja Baaraat. He has evolved as an actor and are impressed everyone with his powerful performances one after another. His latest stint as Bajirao in Sanjay Leela Bansali’s magnum opus has earned him lot of accolades. Bajirao Mastani not only received raving response from the viewers but bagged quite a few awards this year. Ranveer Singh actor has his hands full with movie offers at the moment. He, recently, wrapped up the shoot of Aditya Chopra’s Befikre and is in talks with other filmmakers

The action director has in plans of directing an ad film with the Gunday actor. The ad film will take off soon in Hyderabad and Rohit will direct Ranveer for a high-octane action sequence. An entertain-

Rohit and Ranveer coming together is exciting because they have very different energies, which lends itself to creativity. Ranveer, under Shetty’s guidance, will be performing stunts, like he’s never done before.”

ing with what’s been a proven formula,” Warne said. “Because we had so much talent in our team and so much skill, they [the selectors] thought ‘it doesn’t matter what the combinations are we’re still going to do OK’.” India knocked out Australia by six wickets in a last-over thriller, riding on a Virat Kohli’s epic innings at Mohali

last Sunday. Warne believes Finch, who is the best T20 batsman in the world according to the ICC’s rankings, and David Warner would have been a better choice to open the batting for Australia. Finch had played the pool games against Pakistan and India but was left out for matches against New Zealand and Bangladesh, with selectors selecting Shane Watson and Usman Khawaja instead at the top. Warne didn’t agree with the decision to leave out Finch, who had opened the batting with Warner in 12 T20s and 24 ODIs, including last year’s World Cup triumph on home soil.

England’s run chase in the semi-finals of the World T20. In pursuit of Australia’s 132, England were now 42 runs adrift with five overs remaining. They had seven wickets in hand but England’s middle order had looked brittle in this tournament. Two overs later, when Sarah Taylor reverse swept a pretty innocuous delivery from Farrel to keeper Elyssa Healy,

England began to panic. They needed 30 runs from another 16 deliveries. On a slow pitch, the Aussies bowled tight lines and mixed their pace cleverly. Barring Katherine Brunt, none of the English batters managed to clear the infield. She smacked a six and four to bring the equation down to 17 off 10 deliveries. However, she would depart immediately and Australia, the three-time champions in World T20s, once again prevailed over their arch-rivals. In the high profile fixture, billed as the match of the tournament, England would fall agonisingly short of the finish line, bowing out by a mere five runs.

Scientists have developed a new cloud-based software that can quickly and accurately diagnose ear infections using a smartphone.Researchers at the Umea University in Sweden and the University of Pretoria in South Africa have developed a method that simplifies the diagnosis of ear infections (otitis media), something which annually affects half a billion children worldwide. The software-based method automatically analyses images from a digital otoscope and enables highly accurate diagnoses.“Because of lack of health personnel in many developing countries, ear infections are often misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all. This may lead to hearing impairments, and even to life-threatening complications,” said Claude Laurent, researcher at Umea University.“Using this method, health personnel can diagnose middle ear infections with the same accuracy as general practitioners and paediatricians,” Laurent said.

SBI revises lending rates based on new methodology

Agency | New Delhi Agency | Mumbai State Bank of India has revised lending rates based on marginal cost of funds, a new methodology that will take effect from Friday. The new interest rates vary from 8.95% for overnight to 9.35% for 3 years, SBI said in a document posted on its website on Thursday. The base rate or the minimum lending rate of the bank is 9.3%. The other lending rates are 9.05% for one month, 9.10% for three months and 9.15% for 6 months, it said. For one year loan, the interest rate would be 9.20% while for two years it is going to be 9.3%. Reserve Bank had asked banks to price fixed rate loans of up to three years based on their marginal cost of fund from April 1. All banks will follow Marginal Cost of Funds based Lending Rate (MCLR) system, a new uniform methodology which will ensure fair interest rates to borrowers as well as to banks from tomorrow. Currently, most banks decide lending rates based on average cost of funds.

Opener Jason Roy, the hero of England’s semifinal win against New Zealand, says the team is improving with every game and they are excited to play the ICC World T20 final at the iconic Eden Gardens on Sunday. Roy fired England to a seven-wicket win over New Zealand with a whirlwind 78 off 44 balls here last night, his maiden fifty in the format. He said it is great to be in the final, especially after the loss to the West Indies in the first game. “It sounds pretty cool (being finalists). After the first game it seemed pretty far away.

After that, the amount of effort we put in has paid off,” said Roy. Asked to rate his match-winning effort, Roy said: “Yeah, that’s right up there. It is pretty special for me. To get this group to the final, obviously the bowlers played their part as well. Their skill set was amazing in the death overs. “Today was good as it gets in a T20 game. There are obviously few things we need to work on but credit to the boys for dragging it back. The momentum we carried from the end of their innings to our innings was outstanding,” said the attacking batsman. The 25-yearold hopes the team gains

more supporters post the effort last night as not many gave them a chance of doing well in the biennial event. ”With that sort of side, we had lot of negative feedback from a few people. To be in a World Cup final now, hopefully we will get few more people on our side.” He can’t wait to turn up at the Eden Gardens and play in front of a huge crowd, not 100 thousand anymore now but it can still be overwhelming with the screams of around 67,000 people. “We are getting better with every game but we take the final as just another game of cricket. It just happens to at the Eden Gardens in front of hundred thousand people. It is going to be an incredible experience but we go out and play our natural game.“All the boys today were extremely chilled out before the semifinal. We know we will have bad days and good days. It has gone our way in the last few games and we are hugely excited. It is mind blowing,” reckoned Roy.

SPORTS ROUNDUP WT20: Pandey, Rahane may come in for Shikhar, Yuvraj in semis vs WI Agency | Mumbai

For the players, the most interesting activity on match eve is the team management’s meeting. Usually, it happens at the team hotel. Interestingly, on Thursday, MS Dhoni & Co chose to conduct the meeting at the ground itself. And, this is the first time in the tournament that the think-tank has to make a change in the playing XI. Most eager about the outcome were Ajinkya Rahane, Manish Pandey and Harbhajan Singh. All three are in the running.

In the cues from the nets, Pandey looked to be the front-runner to replace the injured Yuvraj Singh. But, then on his way out,

chief selector Sandeep Patil whispered something in Rahane’s ears. Such whispers are generally considered good news.

Diluting the stringent provisions of the Centre’s Land Acquisition Act 2013, the BJP government in Gujarat today secured the passage of a bill in the Assembly dowing away with social impact assessment and consent clauses for acquisition of land for public purposes and industrial corridor. ‘Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Gujarat Amend-

ment) Bill 2016’ was passed in the Assembly in the absence of the opposition Congress MLAs, who were suspended for two days by the Speaker yesterday. One of the key provisions of the bill is doing away with Social Impact Assessment (SIA) for projects related to Defence and social sectors, such as building air base, defence manufacturing units, schools, roads, canals, affordable houses, etc.The other key change is that SIA will not be

carried out for land acquisition for industrial corridor.Another key amendment is doing away with the provision of consent of affected parties. As per the original central Act, 80 per cent of land owners must give their nod for the acquisition of land. As per the new bill, these provisions will not be followed if the land is acquired for public purpose. However, it will remain in place for acquisition related to industrial development.
