Public transport services were hit in different parts of the state as three unions of Gujarat State Road Transport Service (GSRTC) went on a daylong nationwide strike called by the transport sector workers against the Centre's new Road Safety and Transport Bill. According to officials, around 40,000 employees of GSRTC, including drivers, conductors and other administrative staff have gone on a mass casual

leave. The 24-hour strike, which began from midnight today, has been called in

support of the nationwide call for strike by various transport unions. Nearly

Girl dies after being thrown from Badal family's bus; four arrested Agency : Moga The death of a 13-year-old Dalit girl on Thursday after she and her mother were allegedly pushed out of a speeding bus for protesting against their molestation sparked outrage in Punjab, with the opposition demanding action against the ruling Badal family which owned the bus. Police said that four people, including the bus driver, conductor and helper, were arrested on Thursday, and a a case of murder, attempt to murder and molestation slapped on them. The incident took place Wednesday evening near Moga town, 180 km from here. The bus belongs to Orbit Aviation Company

8,000 buses operated by GSRTC remained off the roads affecting more than 20 lakh daily commuters across the state. Though the state administration tried hard to convince the unions to call off their strike, employees maintained their stand to join the nationwide protest. "There are no issues at the

The victim, Arshdeep Kaur, was declared dead by doctors at the Moga civil hospital while her mother, Shinder Kaur, was admitted in a serious condition. Shinder Kaur, 36,

told the media from her hospital bed that they complained about the molestation to the bus driver but he mocked at them and started speeding the vehicle. She said that no one helped them inside the bus and alleged that she and her daughter were pushed out of the moving bus by the molesters.

The commissioner of higher education has decided to appoint 496 Adhyapak Sahayaks in arts, commerce and home science streams in the 164 grant-in-aid and government colleges. Process of applying for these posts commenced from Tuesday, April 29, and the last date for submitting the application was May 10. The officials said that the

Union Govt sanctions 9 new floating vessels for BSF along Bengal, Gujarat Agency : New Delhi Government has sanctioned nine new ‘floating’ border posts to the BSF in order to enhance vigil and security along India’s riverine borders along Pakistan and Bangladesh, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said today. While six of the border posts, self-sustained troops and weapon carrying vessels, will be deployed along the Sunderbans area along the Indo-Bangladesh border, three similar floating platforms have been sanctioned for the Border Security Force along the shallow sea and marshy area of Rann of Kutch in Gujarat. Officials said these new vessels would be made and procured from Indian ship and vessel making firms, hopefully, within this financial year. The BSF is the mandated border

state level for which they (employees) have to take a harsh step like this. We have been in talks with union leaders but they have decided to go ahead with the strike," Secretary, GSRTC K D Desai said. Union leaders, on the other hand, justified their protest as they claimed that the new

inaugurating BSF’s ‘Golden Jubilee’ seminar here. At present there are about five such BSF vessels at both these border areas. The one-day seminar, held to commemorate the forces’ 50 years of raising this year, is being held on the theme of “border management in India?challenges and options”. The Home Minister also said that the government’s message that BSF will give a befitting reply

to any unprovoked firing by Pakistan has gone down well in the country. “India will never provoke conflict by being the first to open fire across the borders but will never back off. Our forces will give a befitting reply to shelling and gunfire from across the border,” he said in the context of continuous ceasefire violations by Pakistan. He assured the BSF of government’s commitment to provide the force with latest weaponry and equipment as he lauded the personnel for undertaking welfare activities and developmental works for the people residing in the vicinity of the borders. The Home Minister, who had recently visited the border areas, said he could get the feel as “how difficult and hard” the duties of the BSF men were.

government has given a no objection certificate for the vacancies. Of the 496 posts 128 are for commerce, 86 for economics, 121 for English, 42 for Gujarati, 31 for sociology, 27 for Sanskrit, 18 for psychology, 1 in statistics and 11 in Hindi. Sources said that the government has earlier decided to appoint 553 Sahayaks but later considering the work load and the student`s ratio the government decided to appoint only 496 Sahayak.

for drivers. Moreover, the new bill will ultimately benefit private bus operators and weaken powers of state transport. Thus, three of our unions have joined the strike," President, GSRTC Mazdoor Union, Kirit Shah said. Meanwhile, state Road Transport Minister Vijay Rupani termed the strike as "illegal" and said action will be initiated against the employees. "The strike is totally illegal. We have not approved their mass casual leave. We will deduct their one-day salary," said Rupani.

Finance Minister Jaitley exempts foreign investors from MAT; simple ITR on way Agency : New Delhi Seeking to calm investor jitters, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday offered tax relief to FIIs by exempting some of their income from MAT and announced that an "extremely simplified" income tax return form will soon replace the controversial 14-page ITR that sought details of all bank accounts and foreign trips. Replying to the debate on the Finance Bill, 2015, in Lok Sabha, he said Prime Minister's social security schemes will be exempt from service tax and also tinkered with indirect tax rates on raw silk, iron ore and rubber. With funds fleeing India as the row over 20 percent minimum alternate tax (MAT) on capital gains they made in

past three years escalated, Jaitley offered relief by exempting income foreign firms earned from securities transactions and interest, royalties and fees for technical service from MAT. The exemption would apply only in those cases where the normal tax rate is below 18.5 percent. He, however, offered no relief retrospectively as has been demanded by foreign portfolio investors. The

rules for the application of MAT for real estate investment trusts were also eased. Later, the Finance Bill was passed by voice vote, bringing to close the three-stage budget process in the House. On the indirect tax side, export tax on low-grade iron ore was cut to 10 percent from 30 percent, in a bid to boost shipments of the steelmaking raw material from Goa.

Let's get talking India: Marriage cannot be accepted as a licence to rape The Government of India has, effectively, told women that marriage is sacred, and that therefore they have no right to a remedy to rape within marriage. Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi had asked the home ministry whether the government planned to bring in a bill to remove the exception to marital rape that is currently enshrined in the rape law. In a written reply, the minister of state for home, Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary said that the government had no plans to do so. He admitted that the UN CEDAW had recommended that India criminalise marital rape, but that the government could not do so thanks to the “myriad social customs and values, religious beliefs, mindset of the society to treat the marriage as a sacrament.” This ‘marriage is a sacrament’ argument is abhorrent. It amounts to telling women that they must suffer violence and rape within marriage without complaint, since marriage is a sacred tie. By implication, this argument even delegitimises divorce for a woman suffering spousal abuse, since to seek divorce would be to ‘break the sacred tie of marriage.’According to our government, treating marital rape like any other rape would pose a threat to the sacred nature of marriage. But does not violence and rape pose a threat, likewise, to the institution of marriage? There is widespread evidence of such violence, even of marital rape. In an article titled ‘Marital rape: the numbers don’t lie,’ (The Hindu, November 12, 2014) Rukmini S made sense of the data available. She pointed out that, according to researcher Aashish Gupta, 6.6% of women interviewed by National Family Health Survey interviewers, reported having experienced sexual violence by husbands. If this is what women reported, what men themselves admitted is even more significant. A study by the International Centre for Women (ICRW) and United Nations Population Fund’s (UNPFA), conducted in eight States (Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha) asked 9,205 men, across caste, religious and income groups, whether they had ever forced a sexual act on their wife or girlfriend. One third of the men interviewed admitted to having done so. Upholding the conviction in a case of the murder of a wife by her husband, the Delhi high court on September 29, 2014, had observed that “"married women in India are safer on the street than in their matrimonial homes.” Of course, this is not the case in India alone. Across the world, women are more likely to be murdered by their intimate partners than by strangers. What holds for murder, holds as true for rape as well. The Justice Verma Committee, set up to recommend comprehensive changes in response to the anti-rape movement of December 2012, had observed that "The exemption for marital rape stems from a long out-dated notion of marriage which regarded wives as no more than the property of their husbands…a wife was deemed to have consented at the time of the marriage to have intercourse with her husband at his whim. Moreover, this consent could not be revoked." The Verma Committee had unambiguously recommended that the exception to marital rape must be removed from the rape law.

Radhika Apte Says She Hasn't Made a Statement About Nude Clip Controversy Agency : New Delhi You might have noticed several websites today reporting that actress Radhika Apte had laughed off a current controversy about a video clip featuring her partly-nude that was circulated on WhatsApp over the weekend. She hasn't laughed it off. Several reports quoted the actress as saying, "I saw it and laughed it off because it is really funny. I am really busy. I can't waste my time doing that. My family and I never get affected by any of these things. So it just doesn't bother me." The quote was attributed to this interview published by E3 Talkies two days ago, but which actually appears to date from when nude 'selfies,'

That was a film I would have done for sure. I will regret that. As a human being and as a director, both, he was honest, my kind of a person," the actress said. She is now discussing a project with another Bengali filmmaker Anjan Dutt. Describing the film "Nirbaak" as a simple and silent storytelling, Sen said it is not the kind of film where people will rush to do advance booking. "This is the kind of film which paves the way for future generations of filmmakers who want to tell a story differently and use everything other than dialogue, song and dance and tell a story in silence.

Xiaomi phones still hot in IPL 8: KKR's Sunil Narine's 'off-spin China, but Apple catching up ban' extends to international cricket

Agency : Beijing Xiaomi led China's smartphone market as its biggest vendor for the third straight quarter. But Apple is closing in, thanks to demand for its iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, and may even overtake Xiaomi this year. In this year's first quarter, Xiaomi claimed a 13 percent share, while Apple captured 12 percent, research firm Strategy Analytics said Wednesday. In the first quarter of last year, Apple's share was 8 percent compared to Xiaomi's 11 percent.

Xiaomi, a maker of inexpensive Android phones, is riding on the success of its Redmi models, which can start at 599 yuan (US$98) when bought without carrier subsidies. But the company's smartphone shipments have been declining over the past two quarters, Strategy Analytics said. Apple, on the other hand, witnessed booming sales. In the quarter, Apple shipped 13.5 million smartphones to the country, up from 7.8 million units a year ago.

Network Unit’s Weakness Ruins Nokia’s First Quarter Agency : Helsinki Nokia Corp. Thursday said that its mainstay network business delivered unsatisfactory profits during the first quarter while a strong performance based on one-off gains at its licensing unit lifted the Finnish company’s quarterly net profit above analysts’ expectations Although Nokia’s network arm saw its quarterly revenue rise 15% over the year to •2.67 billion ($2.94 billion), the unit’s underlying operating profit for the first quarter fell to •85 million from •216 million, Nokia said in a

statement. The network unit’s weak performance came as a disappointment to investors. Nokia’s share price was down 9% in Helsinki in morning trading. The network unit’s “unsatisfactory” profitability was due to higher expenses and more revenue coming from lower-margin hardware sales instead of more lucrative software deals, Chief Executive Officer Rajeev Suri said in a telephone conference call. The network arm’s quarterly underlying operating profit margin fell 3.2% from 9.3% a year earlier and was well below the company’s long-term target of between 8% and 11%.

Agency : Mumbai Kolkata Knight Riders spinner Sunil Narine is in fresh trouble as his 'ban' on bowling off-spinners has been extended to international cricket, reports confirm. Narine was reported for a suspect action in the game against

Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 22 and will reportedly undergo a bio-mechanical test on his bowling action in Chennai soon. Though Narine is allowed to bowl his 'knuckle-ball' delivery and other variations, he still is not allowed to bowl offsinners. If he continued to

bowl them, Narine risked being suspended from bowling in BCCIorganised matches. This is the third time that Narine has been reported in a tournament run by the BCCI and he risks permanent suspension in internationa matches provided he gets called again. Narine was called twice during the Champions League Twenty20 tournament in 2014 and was barred from bowling in the final. Luckily, at that time, the ban wasn't recognised by the ICC. The West Indian also skipped his country's tour of India in late 2014 and later withdrew from the World Cup squad, in a bid to work on his action. Australian veteran spinner Brad Hogg has been called up in Narine's place for KKR's IPL 8 matches now.

Hafeez 224 builds commanding lead Agency : Khulna Mohammad Hafeez had missed a double-century twice in the past after coming close. He was dismissed for 196 against Sri Lanka in 2012 and had fallen short by three runs last year against New Zealand. But continuing on the flawless effort of the second day in Khulna, and on his recent Test form in general, Hafeez finally passed the landmark. By the time he was dismissed for 224, the best by a Pakistan batsman against Bangladesh, Hafeez had helped his team strengthen their hold on the Test with a lead of 80, which then swelled to 205 by the end of the day after half-centuries from Misbah-ul-Haq, Asad Shafiq and Sarfraz Ahmed. SPORTS ROUNDUP IPL - 8 : 2015 IPL 2015: Fearless teenager Sarfaraz shows he is one for the future Agency : Bengaluru The best RCB batsman had just been run out. Dinesh Karthik slammed his bat into the ground in frustration. The Chinnaswamy Stadium was in shock as AB de Villiers (57 off 45 balls) walked off after a few words of encouragement to Karthik. Meanwhile, a 17-year-old, the youngest player in the IPL, had walked out to bat. It went unnoticed, there was no excitement. The crowd was still recuperating from the loss of de Villiers. Thirty minutes later, the entire stadium was on its feet applauding Sarfaraz Khan and captain Virat Kohli even bowed down to him with a 'namaste' as Sarfaraz walked off the field having made an unbeaten 45 from 21 balls. Agency : Mumbai N Srinivasan’s position in the International Cricket Council (ICC) is safe for now. But there’s little doubt that he faces a rough ride as its chairman. Being the ICC chief without BCCI’s backing makes you powerless. Sharad Pawar will vouch for that. During his tenure as ICC president, it was Srinivasan and Shashank Manohar who called the shots as the Indian board’s top bosses. The souring of relations between Srinivasan and the BCCI’s new secretary, Anurag Thakur, and changing power equations in the

board indicate that Srinivasan is in for a similar experience. The leaked letter to the media targetting Thakur is being seen by the new BCCI regime as a warning of the damage that can be caused using ICC resources. Hence, reports that the Pawar-Thakur group is looking to oust Srinivasan from the ICC are not entirely unfounded. How and when they plan to do it has still not been worked out. A key member of the Thakur-Pawar group, who was present at Sunday’s working committee meeting, said that it was too early to take any action

to point for a single off Pravin Tambe and then drove one to long off for another single off the same bowler. Those three balls were enough for Sarfaraz to get his bearings. He began his assault by slashing James Faulkner over backward point for four. He then sliced Shane Watson over backward point for a

boundary and off the next ball played the shot of the day – an upper cut to third man. Watson stared as if to say: "Who the hell is this baby-faced kid?” The crowd was getting noisy now but Sarfaraz looked calm and composed as he incessantly chewed a piece of gum.

Hockey India names 24member team for Japan series slowed down after entering 190s. It took him 14 deliveries to get off 190. Then, after reaching 198 with a crisp straight drive off Mohammad Shahid, Hafeez had to wait 11 more deliveries to find the couple he needed. As Taijul Islam drifted on to the leg side, Hafeez paddled fine and scampered through for the second run, completing his double-century in 286

deliveries. The calmness of Hafeez's celebration belied the enormity of the landmark. He took his helmet off, raised the bat, offering nothing more than a smile, then kneeled down for the sajda. He smashed a boundary immediately after passing 200, but assumed a quieter approach thereafter, which did not bode well for Bangladesh.

They have compulsions too. To get a decision in the Special General Body Meeting, twothirds majority is needed, which is 21 BCCI units. The Pawar-Thakur group is not guaranteed that. The equation is fast changing in Board politics but Srinivasan still holds enough numbers to thwart any bid to oust him as ICC head. “He is losing control. It was seen at the WC meeting; the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association chief ’s supporters were down to five. Even some of his loyalists have become 5050. It’s all about the chair in BCCI, nothing is permanent,” said the Pawar-group member. However, the TNCA camp is confident of Srinivasan surviving in case voting is held at an SGM.

Agency : Kuwait Political kingmaker Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah of Kuwait extended his influence further into soccer on Thursday when he was elected unopposed as one of Asia's three ordinary representatives on FIFA's executive committee. Sheikh Ahmad was the only candidate for a two-year term up for grabs on FIFA's top table due to tactical manoeuvring by confederation chiefs. The tactics were orchestrated by Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa of Bahrain, who himself was re-elected as Asian Football Confederation (AFC) president unopposed for a four year term. He will continue on the FIFA executive committee as the Asian president. They were joined on the executive committee by Prince Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah of Malaysia and Kozo Tashima of Japan who will

scheduled in June this year. After finishing third in the recent Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, the team will be looking for a series win against Japan in the upcoming tournament. Speaking on the team, Head Coach Paul van Ass said, “The team looks confident ahead of the upcoming tournament.

They are on a high post their third place finish at the 25th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup and the team will aim for a series win.” “The team has worked on the various aspects including starting the game with speed and putting the initial pressure and to keep the attack going in the final minutes of the game.”

Prince Ali's position, as Asian vicepresident, was taken by Sheikh Salman in his role as president, and the Jordanian royal did not contest any of the other Asian seats available. Tashima polled 36 votes and Shah 25 meaning that long-serving Thailand's

Chung Mong-gyu of South Korea, a relative of former FIFA executive committee member Chung Mong-joon also polled 13 votes and was not elected. It is Ahmad's elevation though that is the most significant and extends Asia's increasing influence in sporting political bodies.

With this victory, Lee has extended his lead to 2-0 over the Indian. Meanwhile, Rachita Sahdev along with her mixed doubles partner Abhinav Manota of New Zealand lost 7-21, 1021 against Chinese fifth seeded pair of Zheng Si Wei and Chen Qingchen in 19 minutes in the second round.

Agency : New Delhi Days after Rahul Gandhi's 'suit-boot ki sarkar' barb, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday described the Narendra Modi dispensation as 'soojh-boojh ki sarkar' and took a dig at the Congress Vice President for his "disappearance for a jaunt". With Modi seated beside him in Lok Sabha, Jaitley took potshots at Gandhi and Congress who have been targeting the Prime Minister for his frequent foreign tours. He also hit out at Congress for politicising the farmers' issue, on a day Gandhi was in Vidarbha on a 'padyatra' to highlight the plight of the farming community. "This is a 'soojhboojh ki sarkar'(a wise government). "Let there be no illusions about it," Jaitley

Heat in Rajya Sabha over ‘discrimination’ against dalits in Gujarat

Chief Minister’s blog on eve of Gujarat Day Presented below is Chief Minister of Gujarat, smt Anandiben Patel’s blog in full text on eve of foundation day of Gujarat state. Today on the foundation day of our beloved state, ‘Gujarat Gaurav Divas’ I convey my heartiest wishes to all of you. I bow down to those visionary leaders of that time who earned us an individual identity, a separate state of ‘Gujarat’. Today when I look back at the years gone-by, a number of memorable and not-somemorable events flash in front of my eyes. On one hand we have happy memoirs of triumphant Industrial Revolution, White Revolution and Green Revolution in the backdrop, we boast of a new era of Gujarat on the rise under the aegis of Narendrabhai. On the other, we have bitter

Modi. He was elected to Lok Sabha from Surat only. Surat has a University named after a famous poet Narmad, auditorium named after son of soil and great bollywood actor Sanjeevkumar, and now airport is likely to be named after Shri Morarji Desai. Porbandar on the other hand is birth place of Mahatma Gandhi, and therefore choice of his name is natural. Ahmedabad airport has been named as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Sardar Patel had been lawyer and Municipality President in Ahmedabad. Bhuj airport which was earlier known as Rudramata airport has been recently renamed as Shyamji Krishna Verma airport.

Hetal Patel of Daramali village in Idar taluka in Sabarkantha is days busy trying out Punjabi cuisine at her home. Thanks to the internet, she continually learns new recipes and tries them out at home. Not just Patel, almost all the women in the village are adept at using the internet and even have email ids of their own. These women were trained to use the internet at the village computer training centre. Daramali village has also set an example in smart administration. The village panchayat — where women rule the roost — upgraded the village school by buying a smart board, then set up a computer centre, a laboratory and a public address system. this change. The panchayat next started a computer training programme at the school campus where other villagers are being trained. Apart from the sarpanch, the principal and talati are also women in this village which boasts of 100% drainage and toilets in all houses. Desai says, "During the meeting it was decided that all gifts received by the panchayat and sarpanch would be given for the welfare of the school and this began the process of change. The village then collected Rs 2.5 lakh and the school got a facelift with a modern computer laboratory, library and sound system connected with the village administration. Important announcements are made using this for the entire village to hear."

70,000 Gujarati Thepla flying from Mumbai to quake-hit Nepal Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

CNN journalist Moni Basu has penned down a story on her journey in Spicejet flight from Delhi to Nepal. One interesting portion of this story features silent job of service to earthquake victims in Nepal performed by Gujarati women in Mumbai. Thepla is kind of roti in Gujarat that is very useful during long travel. It’s wisdom of Gujarati women in Mumbai to identify usefulness of Thepla in Nepal crisis. They deserve congratulations. If a Gujarati is out on traveling for three days and if he has homemade thepla in a lunch box in his bag, he can easily consume it during entire journey. Theplas would not lose its quality or taste. In fact many Gujaratis do try

this. Once I was in south Mumbai halting briefly in a flat of possibly richest Surti Jain diamond trader based in Mumbai. He was leaving for Surat with bunch of theplas in his bag. He was planning to consume it during the journey and his stay in Surat. When I travel with family outside Amdavad, we don’t forget to have thepla in our bag. So what if we stay in a fivestar hotel? We at least take one lunch of home-made thepla with Chhundo or Amul Shrikhand in hotel room.

Ahmedabad citizens offer helping hand by the glassful Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

The burning heat where even a glass of water becomes a panacea has spawned water philanthropy in the city. Acknowledging thirsty people on the roads, a local businessman has come out to serve drinking water to people near Soni ni chali in Odhav. Apart from him, a pan parlour owner has started distributing water free of cost to the poor in Makarba while two scrapdealers from Ramrajyanagar in Amraiwadi are also giving free water to people. All these men were prompted to set up free water stalls as they saw people suffering from the heat and asking where they could get a glass of water. Vishnu Patel, a grocery shop owner near Soni Ni Chali and 11 more local traders set up a water station where 70 mineral water dispensers are brought every day to quench the thirst of the poor and needy. They have also appointed a man with a Rs 4,000 salary to serve water to people. Vishnu Patel said, "Since our

shops are on the main road, we routinely see people in cars as well as pedestrians looking for water. Most are forced to drink unhealthy water pouches, so that we decided to start a water station here." Om Prakash Khatik, a scrap dealer started a water station that distributes 60 containers of water a day after he couldn't get a drink of water as he didn't have Rs 2 in change to buy water. "I am supported by my friend and mother. We get a lot of blessings from people who quench their thirst." Mohammad Akram, a 24year-old pan parlour owner in Makarba says water is precious and should not have a price. Akram started to distribute free water pouches to poor and thirsty people. Akram said, "Water is not a business but it is for serving people. I charge one rupee a pouch for other people but for the needy and poor it is free of cost. On Thursday, I distributed around 1,200 water pouches free to those who came to my parlour."
