Ness Wadia sentenced for drug possession in Japan

Will review support to Cong in MP: Mayawati

Lucknow : BSP president Mayawati Tuesday said she would review support to the Congress government in Madhya Pradesh after their Guna candidate pulled out of the election race. Alleging the Congress was misusing the official machinery in Madhya Pradesh, she said, in a tweet, “The Congress is not less than the BJP in misusing the official machinery. The BSP candidate from Guna has been forced by the Congress to pull out of the election race but the BSP will give a reply by fighting on its own symbol and review its support to the Congress government.” On Monday, BSP’s Guna candidate Lokendra Singh had opted out of the election race. He was pitted against Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia. Voting in Guna will take place on May 12.

Japan has sentenced business tycoon Ness Wadia to two-year jail term for possessing drugs. The Wadia Group has clarified that the sentence has been suspended. New Delhi : Ness Wadia, son of industrialist Nusli Wadia, has been sentenced for drugs possession while on a skiing holiday to Japan. Ness Wadia, heir to the 283-year-old Wadia Group and co-owner of the Kings XI Punjab cricket team, was arrested in early March at New Chitose Airport in the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. According to a brief report carried by a local Hokkaido station of state broadcaster NHK, customs officials at New Chitose were alerted to Mr. Wadia by sniffer dogs and a search revealed that he had about 25g of what appeared to be cannabis resin in his trouser pocket. The Wadia empire has many units, which include

Bombay Dyeing, Bombay Burman Trading, biscuit giant Britannia Industries, budget airline GoAir and a share in IPL franchise Kings XI Punjab with the total market valuation of its listed entities standing at $13.1 billion. Mr. Wadia admitted to possession, arguing that the drug was for his personal use. Mr. Wadia spent a period in detention before his indictment on March 20 and an undisclosed period of detention before a court hearing. The Sapporo District Court handed him a two-year prison sentence, which was suspended for five years. Japan’s narcotics laws are strict and are currently being applied especially tightly.

New Delhi : The woman who accused Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi of sexual harassment today said she was boycotting the “in-house proceedings” due to “serious concerns and reservations”. In a detailed statement to the media today, she said, “I felt I was not likely to get justice from this committee and so I am no longer participating in the 3 Judge Committee proceedings”. The decision about inhouse, private hearings by a three-member panel was taken last week by the full court. The three-member panel initially named was also tweaked after her objections. Justice NV Ramana, who was initially named, had withdrawn from the panel after the woman complained that he was a family friend of the

Last month, China had placed a technical hold on a fresh proposal to impose a ban on the head of Pakistanbased JeM which claimed responsibility for the deadly Pulwama terror attack. It was for the fourth time, China blocked Azhar’s listing as a global terrorist by the UN. According to reports, the US, the UK and France this time have stepped up pressure on Beijing by taking the issue

directly to the powerful UN Security Council (UNSC). Beijing’s opposition to the issue be taken to the apex UN body stems from the fact that it would have to publically explain its stand on its reservations to list Azhar, whose group JeM has already been designated as terror outfit by UN, before exercising its veto power as a permanent member of the UNSC. The independence of the judiciary is “under threat” and it was being made a “scapegoat” he had said.

Listing of Masood Azhar as global terrorist by UN will be ‘properly resolved’: China

New Delhi : Days after Chinese President Xi Jinping met Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, Beijing Tuesday said that the contentious issue of designating Jaish-eMohammed chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist by the UN will be “properly resolved”. However, it did not give any timeline on the issue. “I can only say that I believe that this will be properly resolved,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told a media briefing in Beijing, PTI reported. He was responding to queries on the media reports that China has purportedly consented to lift its technical hold on a fresh proposal moved by France, the UK and the US to list Azhar under the 1267 Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee

committee very frightening and I was very nervous because of being confronted and questioned by three Supreme Court Judges and without even the presence of my lawyer/support person”. She also said there was no audio or video recording of the proceedings as she requested and she was not given a copy of her statement. The complainant - a former employee of the top court - had made the allegations against the

to resolve the issue by taking it to the UNSC and insisted that it should be resolved at the 1267 Committee whose proceedings are not publicised. “Regarding the listing issue in the 1267 Committee, we have expressed our position many times and I just want to stress two points,” Geng said answering a number of questions on Azhar’s issue. “First, we support the listing issue being settled within the 1267 committee through dialogue and consultation and I believe this is the consensus of most members. Second, the relevant consultations are going on within the committee and has achieved some progress. Third, I believe, with the joint efforts of all parties, this issue can be properly resolved,” he said.

regret” and questioned why the expression of regret is in brackets in his affidavit. The court had asked for Gandhi’s explanation after BJP leader Meenakshi Lekhi sought initiation of contempt proceedings against him. In her plea, Lekhi said Gandhi, while referring to the court’s April 10 order rejecting the Centre’s objections to the admissibility of certain

documents submitted by review petitioners in the Rafale deal matter, had attributed his own statements about “chowkidar chor hai” to the court ruling. After the April 10 order: Gandhi had said: “Supreme Court ne clear kar diya hai ki chowkidarji ne chori karwai (Supreme Court has made it clear that chowkidarji got the theft done)”.

Priyanka Gandhi On Why She’s Not Contesting Against PM Modi New Delhi : Priyanka Gandhi Vadra broke her silence today on not contesting the national election from Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. After months of build-up, the Congress announced last week that not Priyanka Gandhi but Ajay Rai, a local Congress leader who had finished third in the 2014 polls, would be the party’s candidate again in the temple town. “I did not pull out (of Varanasi),” Priyanka Gandhi asserted in Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi, where she was campaigning for her brother Rahul Gandhi, the Congress president. Priyanka Gandhi joined the Congress in January - after years of playing an unofficial role in the party’s decisions and was given charge of the Congress campaign in 41 of Uttar Pradesh’s 80 seats

in eastern UP. Jyotiraditya Scindia was given charge of the rest. “I took the advice of all senior leaders of our party and colleagues in Uttar Pradesh. They firmly felt that I have the responsibility here of looking after 41 seats. And all candidates expected me to campaign in their constituency. I felt that they (candidates) would be disappointed if I focused on only one place,” the 47-yearold said. She disagreed that the move sent out any “wrong signaI”. “From the start, I had said that I would do what my party says. My party decided this so I am going with that,” she said.

w o y l o l d o B H d o o llywo Katrina on Breakup With Ranbir:

2 / Dt. 01/05/2019, Wednesday, Ahmedabad Edition Editors’ Picks wednesday, 01 may, 2019

The mistakes Modi should avoid if he wins another term In less than a month, there will be a new government in place. The betting is that it could be a Modi-led government, even though we cannot rule out other possibilities. But while the entire focus of Team Modi is currently on winning a second innings for the NDA, one hopes that there is a larger game-plan. It is a pity that Narendra Modi partially squandered the first half of his tenure in things that did not quite deliver (National Judicial Appointments Commission, etc), and started the more disruptive reforms towards the second half, including the goods and services tax (GST) and the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC). While one must obviously prioritise what needs doing post23 May, there are lessons to be learnt from the mistakes over the last five years. First, don’t spread yourself too thin. There was practically no month or quarter in the first half of Modi’s tenure when a new scheme was not launched. From Jan Dhan to Swachch Bharat, Start-Up India, StandUp India, Mudra (microloans), Smart Cities, Digital India, Ujjwala (cooking gas connections to the poor), Saubhagya (100 percent last mile electrification), PM Fasal Bima Yojana and PM Kisan Samman in the interim budget, there has been no let-up in the initiatives launched. There is no need to rubbish any one of these schemes but, is it humanly possible for one administration to oversee the successful completion of even one of these projects within five years? The gap between the numbers achieved on paper and a recognition of that achievement by the ordinary voter is significant. Second, lack of focus on quantifying “achche din.” Achche din should have translated into three recognisable gains: higher farm prosperity, more jobs and higher incomes for the middle class, and a visible reduction in poverty. The last one is probably close to achievement, but success is not easily visible on the other two fronts, with the farm economy far from robust, and job creation – especially jobs with acceptable wages – an uncertain affair. The government’s economic report card is quite good at the macro level – inflation in low single digits, success in reining in the fiscal deficit, and significant growth in public investments in infrastructure – but at least two of them are not seen as contributing to “achche din”. The fiscal deficit does not matter to the “aam aadmi” and inflation matters only when it goes out of control. Third, failure to deal with the banking crisis early. Everyone knew banks were loaded with bad debts even in 2014, but no one predicted how deep the rot had gone. The incoming government did not fully realise that public sector bankers may have been hiding more of their bad loans, and by the time the scale of the recapitalisation needs were understood, and the IBC was legislated, it was too late for banks to resume lending aggressively to support an economic revival. The challenges posed by the double balance-sheet problem, with banks in trouble and corporates trying hard to deleverage, were not addressed early enough. Clearly, the Prime Minister’s innate belief that public sector banks can be fixed was wrong, and this led to a massive build-up of problems. Fourth, in the obsession with black money and corruption, Modi failed to notice their downsides. Right from the outset, given the background of UPA era scandals, he focused on black money and corruption. Among other things, Modi got huge revenues from coal and spectrum auctions, announced two extortionate amnesty schemes for black money holders, both domestically and abroad, and went in for demonetisation and GST to formalise the economy. To add to it, he closed tax-breaks on investments routed through Cyprus, Mauritius and Singapore. The net effect of these measures was a squeeze on alternate sources of finance for corporates. These measures were deflationary and served as speedbreakers to an economic revival. Fifth, lack of a political-economic advisory council. It is customary for the government to have a Chief Economic Advisor, or for the PM to have an economic advisory council (EAC). But Modi got himself the latter only when the economy - Kapilkumar M. IPL 2019: Ravindra Jadeja returns to CSK Ajax issue fair response to recent Pochettino complaints training ahead of Delhi Capitals clash Dhoni was not spotted in the training session ahead of Delhi Capitals clash, he missed the previous match as well due to a back spasm.

AG. GNS_New Delhi : He is one of the old horses of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) even though this has been a relatively quieter Indian Premier League (IPL) for him. Ravindra Jadeja, also a member of India’s World Cup-bound squad, has played 11 matches so far in IPL 2019, scoring 76 runs and taking 9 wickets. Jadeja, along with skipper MS Dhoni, missed the CSK’s last game against Mumbai Indians (MI) at home that

they lost heavily as both were down with fever. However, on Monday, the left-arm cricketer was seen joining the team’s training as the CSK returned to the nets after a two-day break since the hammering they received last Friday, Sportstar reported. The CSK though have qualified for the playoffs, they have lost three of their last four games and will be looking to get back into their familiar winning streak before the playoffs begin. Chennai

takes on Delhi Capitals in their next game to be held in Chennai on Wednesday. Both teams are on 16 points and a win will confirm either of them in the top two. The news from the CSK camp was not too well even a few days ago as head coach Stephen Fleming said the health conditions of Dhoni and Jadeja were not too good. Dhoni has been suffering from back spasm and has missed game against Sunrisers Hyderabad earlier.

Now a senior member in the team, Rohit remains a key part of the side as they head to the World Cup under Kohli’s captaincy. “When MS (Dhoni) was the captain, he had Sehwag, Sachin pajji and other senior players in the team to help him and give advice when needed. “Now, since we have been in the team for so long, it is our responsibility to help the captain,” Rohit said.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino said it was “not fair” but Ten Hag turned the tables, suggesting the monumental amount of cash they receive from the Premier League means they have to deal with a tougher schedule. “I can’t really say a lot about that,” he said of Pochettino’s claim. “There are always different circumstances, we play in the Eredivisie, we get 10million (euros) (£8.6m) from TV and Tottenham, I don’t know how much they get. They get a lot more. “Is that still unfair for them or for us? Everyone has different circumstances, you just have to deal with them. The measure comes at the backdrop of the US withdrawing from the nuclear deal with Iran in May, 2018. “Saudi Arabia and others in OPEC will more than make up the Oil Flow difference in our now Full Sanctions on Iranian Oil,” US President Donald Tr u m p t w e e t e d . M i k e Pompeo, US Secretary of State, too, said that the US

has had “extensive and productive discussions with Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and other major producers” to ensure the adequate supply of oil. Additionally, he also hinted that the US is increasing its oil production. All of this would entail significant realignments in India’s oil import dynamics. Imports from Saudi Arabia and Iraq form the bulk of oil that India imports and Iranian oil ranks at number three.

Supreme Court has directed Amrapali Group to inform it of all transactions it made with MS Dhoni who is seeking Rs 40 crore for endorsing the company.

New Delhi : The Supreme Court Tuesday directed real estate company Amrapali Group to reveal all their financial transactions with Indian cricketer MS Dhoni by Wednesday. The former Indian skipper had moved the apex court, accusing Amrapali Group of cheating him. In his plea, Dhoni said that he had booked a penthouse in the Amrapali Safari project in Ranchi, but he was not given possession of the flat despite having made the down payment. He also alleged that the real estate firm hadn’t cleared his outstanding dues from the period when he was the company’s brand ambassador. The Supreme Court has directed the Amrapali Group to inform

it of all transactions it had with Dhoni. The cricketer is seeking Rs 40 crore for endorsing the company between 2009 and 2016. In the application filed before the Supreme Court, Dhoni had asked for his name to be added to the list of creditors of the troubled company. Amrapali Group has been facing financial troubles over the past few years. Over 46,000 homebuyers have moved against the company because they had paid an advance but had not received their promised homes. Earlier, CMD Anil Sharma and two directors of Amrapali Group – Shiv Deewani and Ajay Kumar – were sent to police custody with the hearing in the case against them still in progress.

What Jet Airways and other Indian airlines can learn from Singapore Airlines Although there are talks of a rescue being mounted, led by SBI, the longer Jet Airways stays out of operation, the more difficult it is for it to be revived

Mumbai : After almost 27 years in business, it looks increasingly likely that aeroplanes painted with the Jet Airways livery have made their final touchdowns. On April 17, Jet Airways suspended all domestic flights following

its inability to obtain interim funding necessary to continue operations. Just 5 days before, it announced the “temporary” cessation of its international routes as a stop-gap measure to give itself some breathing space from creditors which are owed some USD 1.2 billion. In its heyday, it flew to 22 international cities and over 50 local airports. It was once India’s most valuable airline, had the largest market share in India and admired by Indians for

breaking the monopoly of state-owned Air India and bringing into the market better services, reliability, and nicer aircraft. Although there are talks of a rescue

David Warner signed off from IPL 2019 after playing a vital part in SunRisers Hyderabad’s 45-run win over Kings XI Punjab.

New Delhi : David Warner played his last IPL 2019 match for SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Monday night. The 32-year-old will no longer be available to play in IPL 2019 with Australia’s pre-World Cup 2019 training camp starting from May 2. Warner signed off in style, smashing 81 off 56 balls in SRH’s thumping 45-run win over Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Following his match-winning knock, David Warner took to Instagram on Tuesday morning and penned an emotional message for the SunRisers Hyderabad

fans, team, support staff and everyone else concerned with the IPL franchise. The Australian star expressed his gratitude to the “SunRisers family for your support, not just this season but also for the last year”. It was the last time David Warner will be seen in IPL 2019, but the Australian leaves the tournament on top. The former SunRisers Hyderabad captain is currently the top run-getter in IPL 2019 with 692 runs to his name in 12 matches. The Australian is well ahead of second-placed KL Rahul, who has scored 520 runs for Kings XI Punjab this season, while Andre Russell is third with 486

runs. David Warner hit eight half-centuries and a century, scoring at a strike-rate of 143.86 and an average of 69.20. On Monday, David Warner struck a belligerent 81 runs, which included seven fours and two sixes. Warner and Wriddhiman Saha (28 off 13) got Sunrisers off to a brisk start after being sent into bat. The duo took the Kings XI bowlers to the cleaners to pile up 77 runs of the first six overs of powerplay. The Australian added another 82 runs off 55 balls with Manish Pandey before Kings XI Punjab skipper Ravichandran Ashwin (2/20) struck twice in the 16th over to remove both the set batsmen.

AG. GNS_New Delhi : It has been a seven-year-long wait for Delhi Capitals to earn a berth in the IPL playoffs, but their solid performance this season hasn’t taken advisor Sourav Ganguly by surprise. The former Indian skipper is confident of more wins this season because he feels the management has finally managed to get the squad’s balance right. Also, the decision to stick to a core team without chopping and changing too much after defeats has benefited the Capitals, feels Ganguly. Capitals are reaping the benefits of investing in young cricketers like Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Prithvi Shaw and Kagiso Rabada. However, Ganguly doesn’t feel the squad is inexperienced, and singled out Shikhar Dhawan’s contribution. “There is no such word called inexperience in this team. We have the right mix of youth and experience.

It is also a huge boost to get an experienced player like Shikhar coming out and batting with so much confidence,” Ganguly said, adding: “Shikhar has been brilliant for us. His form was very crucial for the Capitals.” The former Indian captain also agreed that core players like Iyer, Pant and Shaw have gained in experience. Ganguly added, “Right after losing the Kings XI Punjab match, Capitals didn’t react in panic by chopping and changing the team. They

persisted with proven players and this team is really making us proud.” The Capitals’ advisor also heaved praise on pacer Rabada, who is the leading wicket-taker this IPL season with 25 scalps. Rabada had missed out on playing for the franchisee last year due to injury. “It’s not only the batsmen who are making it count. The bowlers are doing excellent work. Rabada has been outstanding, so too the other fast bowlers. Axar Patel too has contributed in all departments,” Ganguly said.

aircrew and ground staff who have not been paid for months have been leaving and joining other airlines. Competitors like SpiceJet and Indigo have also been using the landing slots in airports that have been vacated by Jet. So, is there something that Jet Airways and the airline industry in India can learn from Singapore? Following are some generic suggestions. It is not meant to be an analysis of how Jet Airways got into trouble.

Deepak Chahar, Navdeep Saini ready to help Team India be battle-ready for World Cup AG. GNS_New Delhi : Though the Indian Premier League (IPL) season is still on, the countdown to the 2019 ICC ODI World Cup has well and truly began. The showpiece event begins just 17 days after the IPL final (May 12). Team India, of course, will once again go in as one of the big favourites to win the title. And this time, as reported earlier, there will be four fast bowlers who will travel with the 15-member World Cup squad to England and Wales. The reasoning behind this is to keep injury replacements ready at short notice if the need arises and more importantly to give the Indian batsman the opportunity to face some quality fast bowling in the nets as they prepare for their matches. These four young

bowlers are Khaleel Ahmed, Deepak Chahar, Navdeep Saini and Avesh Khan. Chahar and Saini spoke exclusively to TimesofIndia. com about the brief they have been given and how they will help Team India prepare in England and Wales. Saini has been making headlines recently for touching 150 kmph in the ongoing IPL and bowling some tight overs in crunch “I have been given a big responsibility of a net

bowler in the World Cup. My aim will be to bowl as fast as possible to Indian players and help them prepare for the World Cup,” Navdeep told Timesofindia.com in an exclusive interview. “Khaleel (Ahmed), Avesh (Khan) and Deepak (Chahar) will also be there to help the Indian team. I just want to give my best at the nets and help Team India prepare for the big tournament,” a confident Navdeep said.

Dalit groom on horse attacked by OBC men in Gujarat

Ahmedabad : The wedding procession of a Dalit man was allegedly attacked by Thakors of the OBC community, who ‘objected’ to the groom riding a horse, in Aravalli district. According to the groom’s father Mahendra Vankar, in his police complaint, Prashant was to be married on April 20 and a wedding procession was taken out the previous day from their home to their deity’s temple. They had panchayat member Udesinh Balusinh Makwana’s permission, he stated. “Some relatives were walking ahead of Prashant’s horse while the rest of the procession was moving towards the temple. Members of the Thakor community in the village suddenly rushed in front of the horse and uttered castebased slurs,” Vankar stated in the FIR, which was filed on April 24. “They shouted

at us that Dalits can’t hold wedding processions in the village. The accused persons thrashed four members of the Dalit community and threatened to kill us if we ever held a wedding procession in the village,” the FIR stated. Makwana intervened and rescued other members of the Dalit community who were being thrashed, the FIR added. Investigating office and deputy superintendent of police (Arvalli) N M Kanjharia said an FIR has been lodged against seven members of the Thakor

community, all between the age of 20 and 25 years, under the Atrocities Act and for assault and criminal intimidation. “We also met leaders of both communities and told members of the Thakor community that Dalits have the right to take out a procession, and use a horse. However, the accused — who have applied for anticipatory bail — were adamant and insisted that Dalits can’t take out a wedding procession in their village or use a horse,” Kanjharia said.

Ahmedabad : The intriguing legal battle between Gujarat farmers and the US food and beverages giant PepsiCo, over a variety of potatoes, could soon reach the Supreme Court. The two farmers from North Gujarat who were first sued by the company for cultivating its registered variety of potatoes, FL 2027, which has been trademarked as FC5, told the Gujarat high court on Monday that they were “desirous of approaching the Supreme Court”. The company sued the farmers for growing and selling this potato type, which is registered by PepsiCo India Holdings Pvt Ltd, alleging that the cultivation violated the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers Rights Act. The case in the high court involved two farmers from Malgadh village of Deesa block in Banaskantha

district, Fulchand and Suresh Kachchhawa. The company approached the high court after a civil court in Deesa ordered an inspection by court commissioner only of the premises belonging to Kachchhawa at Malgadh village, where the potatoes are stored. The civil court did not order inspection and inventory of potato stocks in cold storage. Upon PepsiCo’s request, the HC ordered the court commissioner to visit to cold storages in Banaskantha and Sabarkantha districts. Official data of Indian Salt Manufacturers Association (ISMA) shows that the export from Gujarat to China has increased from 22.17 lakh tonnes in 2015-16 to 48 lakh tonnes in 2017-18. Bharat Raval, president, ISMA

very concerned about human deaths and road accidents due to snowfall. The country has expedited de-icing of the roads. Earlier, inferior quality of salt is used for de-icing, but they have started using even good or industrial quality salt now,” said Raval. Shamji Kangad, a salt manufacturer and exporter in Kutch, said, “The demand of salt made in Gujarat in the international market has jumped because it is the cheapest chemical used in de-icing. Generally, the salt export for de-icing starts from September. During this period, the salt export touches around 7-8 lakh tonnes per month from the average four lakh tonnes.”

In frozen Europe, Gujarat salt provides some warmth

Rajkot : The prolonged frozen spell in Europe and the US, a phenomenon triggered by unusually high temperatures in Arctic, has come as a boon to salt manufacturers from Gujarat. For the past three years, the salt export from Gujarat has significantly shot up with the major chunk being used in de-icing the roads in countries reeling under heavy snowfall. The state accounts for 90% of the salt exported from India. De-icing is the process of removing snow or ice from the surface of the roads, mostly done by using sodium chloride or other chemicals. Salt or sodium chloride is preferred as it is inexpensive.

This is done to prevent fatal accidents caused by slippery roads in sub-zero conditions. This salt made in Gujarat is routed through China to the European and American countries and Russia due to lesser logistics cost.

said, “It’s faster to send salt for de-icing from China to Europe and Russia and the logistics cost is less. China has increased the salt import from India and it also exports its inferior quality salt for deicing in Polar countries.” “The US is

He wrote that those responsible for procuring toor at at minimum support

price had breached the trust of the government by engaging in scams and had robbed the state exchequer of crores of rupees. Concrete action had not been taken against those responsible, he said. “Recently, the government had assigned to various government officers the duty of procuring toor. Without worrying about t h e i r p e r s o n a l s a f e t y, farmers and their leaders conducted a public raid in Keshod tauka of Junagadh and drew attention of the administration. A police case has been registered in this regard. We had also conducted a public raid on toor procurement centre of Visavadar and found that 70 per cent of the stock was substandard,” Ribadiya wrote.

784 voters of this Gujarat village will vote on May 19

Sajanpur : On April 23, when most people living near their village made a beeline to polling booths, residents of Sajanpur continued with their daily chores. No, they did not boycott the Lok Sabha election. But they will vote on May 19 for the Ratlam parliamentary seat!. Technically, Sajanpur is located in Alirajpur district of Madhya Pradesh, but it is surrounded from all sides by eight villages of Chhota Udepur district. There are 784 registered voters here. Most villages of Gujarat are located in a close vicinity, some of them barely a few hundred meters away. Moreover, the village figures in Gujarat’s map and not MP’s. “Since childhood, I know that our village has

always been part of Madhya Pradesh. But nobody knows the reason for it and nobody ever tried to know,” said Gamji Kanesh, sarpanch of Sajanpur. The village got a gram panchayat only 20 years back when its population crossed 1,000. “Earlier our village was part of Dhayana gram panchayat and people used to go there to vote,” Kanesh added. Currently the population of village is around 1,400. Kanesh added that no candidate has

ever visited the village and the campaigning is left to party workers only. Due to the jurisdiction of Madhya Pradesh government, the boards in the village are all in Hindi. In fact, the village school which has classes till standard X has Hindi as its medium of instruction. “Though most villagers speak in Hindi, all can converse in Gujarati too. Many people from the village migrate to Saurashtra and Vadodara in search of labour work,” said Parsing Mersing, a villager. The villagers have to travel 15 km away to Kathiwada or 25 km to Alirajpur for works like RTO registration, voters’ registration, caste certificates and applying for government schemes among others.
