The first of the two phases of voting for the Gujarat assembly will be held on December 1 when 89 constituencies will go to the polls in an election in which the ruling BJP is looking for a record seventh successive term. The entry of Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party has made the Gujarat election, which used to be a straight fight between the BJP and Congress, a triangular contest. In the first phase, 788 candidates are in the fray across 19 districts of South Gujarat and KutchSaurashtra region, according to the Gujarat Chief Electoral Officer. Of these candidates, 70 are women and 339 independents. Among the 89 seats, 14 are reserved for Scheduled Tribes and seven for Dalits. Polling will open at 8 am and continue till 5.30 pm. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has downplayed AAP’s challenge in Gujarat polls, claiming Arvind Kejriwal’s party may not even open its account, and said the BJP state unit’s announcement of setting up anti-radicalisation cell is a good initiative that can be considered by other states and the Centre. Shah described Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity, all-round development of Gujarat during his tenure as the state chief minister and the implementation of zero appeasement policy as the main reasons for people repeatedly reposing faith in the BJP over the last 27 years. “The BJP will register an unprecedented victory in Gujarat. People have full faith in our party and our leader Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” said Shah, who has been crisscrossing the state and addressing five rallies a day in the run-up to the two-phase

polls on December 1 and 5. On the question of AAP entering Gujarat assembly elections, the BJP leader said,”Every party has a right to contest elections, but it is up to people whether they accept the party or not. “AAP is nowhere in the mind of the people of Gujarat. Wait for election results, maybe AAP’s name would not figure in the list of successful candidates,” he said. While the Congress has been the BJP’s principal rival in Gujarat, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (APP) has undertaken an aggressive campaign in Modi’s home state. On Congress, Shah said, “It is still the main Opposition party, but the party is going through a crisis, and its impact is visible in Gujarat as well.”

the Pentagon said throughout 2021, the PLA sustained the deployment of forces and continued infrastructure build-up along the LAC. Negotiation made minimal progress as both sides resist losing perceived advantages on the border, it said.

The ED said Wednesday it has attached assets worth more than Rs 22 crore of former Andhra Pradesh TDP MLA J C Prabhakar Reddy, his associates and companies linked to them in a case related to an alleged BS-IV vehicles scam. In a statement, it was also probing the role of major automobile manufacturer Ashok Leyland, headquartered in Chennai, in the case. Reddy is currently the chairman of the Tadipatri municipality located in Anantapur district of the state. He has earlier represented the Tadipatri seat as an MLA of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). The case emerges from a March 2017 ruling of the Supreme Court where it ordered that vehicles not compliant with BSIV emission norms should not be sold in India by any manufacturer or dealer from April 1, 2017. The registration of such vehicles was also prohibited from the same date, the Enforcement Directorate said. However, Jatadhara Industries

A probe found that some of the registrations were done in Nagaland, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, it said. “ED has gathered evidences in the form of fabricated invoices from RTO authorities in Nagaland and original invoices issued by Ashok Leyland as scrap for the some vehicles and established the crime.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday said the state was making an effort to find a permanent solution to the state’s flood problem that causes huge loss of lives and property every year. “Till a few years ago, 38 districts of Uttar Pradesh were affected by floods every year. Today, it has been reduced to only four districts,” he said. Discussing the efforts behind the success, Adityanath said when he took over as chief minister in 2017, he received a Rs 100-crore expenditure bill related to the Elgin Bridge in Barabanki, adding that such a huge expense was incurred every year for flood control at just one place. Adityanath added that he then inspected the site and decided to channelise the river by dredging it. This resulted in controlling the flood problem in Bahraich, Gonda and Barabanki districts with the government, instead of incurring an expenditure of Rs 100 crore, spending only Rs 5 crore, he said. Bilkis Bano on Wednesday challenged the early remission of the 11 convicts who were serving a life sentence for gangraping her and murdering her family in the 2002 Gujarat riots and were freed on August 15 this year in the Supreme Court. Her lawyer filed a writ petition challenging the remission of the life sentence of the convicts on Wednesday. Bilkis Bano also filed a review plea against the May order of the Supreme Court which allowed Gujarat government to apply the 1992 Remission Policy in the case. As Bano’s lawyer mentioned the matter before Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud for listing, he said he would into it and decide if both pleas could be heard together and by the same bench. The 11 convicts, who had been sentenced to life imprisonment, were given early release in August 2022 by the Gujarat government. Defending the decision, the state government had stated in its affidavit that the remission was granted for “good

behavior” after the convicts had served 14 years of sentence in prison. The government also said that the convicts were not released under the circular governing grant of remission to prisoners as part of the celebration of “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” but as per the 1992 Remission Policy. After their release on August 15, the convicts were received with sweets and garlands. Their release drew nationwide criticism and several petitions questioning the decision of the Gujarat government were filed in the top court. During the 2002 Gujarat riots, a 5-month pregnant Bilkis Bano and her family were ambushed by the accused, who gangraped her, murdered her three-year-old daughter and the rest of her family and left her for dead.

Agency News: Bangalore The High Court of Karnataka has upheld the recent ban imposed by the Central government on the Popular Front of India (PFI) for its involvement in anti-national activities. A single judge bench of Justice M Nagaprasanna on Wednesday pronounced the judgment. The ban was challenged by Nasir Ali, a resident of Bengaluru and the state president of the proscribed outfit. The Central government had issued an order banning the organisation and its allied outfits for a period of five years with immediate effect on September 28. The Centre took this action after raids on the offices of PFI and the residences of its members across the country. It came in the wake of allegations that the banned Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) and Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) besides PFI have close links with many terrorist organisations.

The government order had said that some of PFI’s founding members are the leaders of the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) and PFI has linkages with Jamat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), both of which are proscribed organisations. Senior advocate Jayakumar Patil, who argued for PFI, had submitted that declaring it as illegal was an anti-constitutional move. He said that the order did not specify reasons for declaring it as an illegal organisation. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who argued for the Central government, said that the PFI was carrying out anti-national acts and it had joined hands with terrorist organisations carrying out violent activities in the country and abetting such acts.

Vijay Deverakonda appears before Ajay Devgn’s ‘Drishyam 2’ crosses Rs 150 crore mark ED in Liger money laundering probe at domestic box office

Vijay Deverakonda is being questioned about sources of funding for the movie

Popular Tollywood actor Vijay Deverakonda on Wednesday appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the investigation relating to sourcing of funds for his recent film ‘Liger’. The actor appeared before ED officials at the agency’s regional office in Hyderabad. The central agency is investigating the alleged violation of Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). As per sources, Vijay Deverakonda is being questioned about sources of funding for the movie, his remuneration and payments made to other actors including American boxer Mike Tyson. The ED officials had grilled film director Puri Jagannadh and actor-turned-producer Charmme Kaur on November 17. They were questioned about the source of investment for Hindi-Telugu movie ‘Liger’ which was released in August this year. Mike Tyson also played an extended cameo in the movie, reported to have been produced with a budget of about Rs 125 crore. Starring Vijay Deverakonda and Ananya Panday in the lead, the film had mega shoots in Las Vegas. It, however, bombed at the box-office. T h e ED took up the investigation after Congress leader Bakka Judson lodged a complaint about the investment into the movie through dubious routes. Bakka Judson had complained that even politicians had invested money in ‘Liger’. He claimed that the investors found it the easiest way of turning their black money into white. The ED officials are reported to have questioned the director and producer about the allegations that crores of rupees were invested into the making of the movie from foreign countries allegedly in violation of FEMA. The investigating agency suspects that several companies had transferred funds to the accounts of the filmmakers. They were asked to provide details of those who had remitted the money and how the payments were made to foreign actors including Mike Tyson and technical crew.
