We do not get any grant from government: IOA Agency | New Delhi

Terming the government’s claim of allocating grants to IOA as “misleading”, the top sports body has asked the Sports Ministry to stop the practice as the money was only meant for meeting the expenses of the athletes during the multi-sporting events. The Sports Ministry does not normally give grants to the IOA but it bears the expenditure incurred on items like air passage, accommodation, ceremonial kit and playing kit for participation of Indian contingent in Olympics, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games.

Delhi has shown the way: AAP govt Agency | New Delhi

Delhi government on Friday thanked the people of the city for making “successful” the implementation of the ambitious odd-even scheme on the first day with chief minister Arvind Kejriwal saying he was “overwhelmed” by the response of Delhiites. “We thank people of Delhi for making the scheme a success on the first day. The same Delhi, which was called selfish, has shown the way. We thank all people for choosing their children’s health,” Delhi’s transport minister Gopal Rai said. He even said people have responded to environment-friendly drive the same way they came out to the streets during the

anti-corruption movement three years ago. “That time people of Delhi wanted a corruption-free city. Now they want a pollution-free city,” Rai told a press conference with PWD minister Satyendar Jain. “It has become a movement and we are truly overwhelmed by the response we have received so far. Delhi will show way to the rest of the country,” Kejriwal said. Jain, the nodal minister to deal with issues relating to environment, said a political party which ruled Delhi in the past only talked about the odd-even scheme but did not have the guts to implement it. “No political party had guts to implement the oddeven policy. This is the first government

Plot thickens for Nihalani; Shyam Benegal panel to revamp censor board Agency | New Delhi

The Centre said on Friday it has a constituted a committee headed by noted film-maker Shyam Benegal to look into a revamp of the censor board, which has been mired in controversy since Pahlaj Nihalani took charge as its chief last year. Under Nihalani’s tenure, the board earned criticism for its periodic ‘guidelines’ of what is considered out of joint with Indian culture. “A whole lot of Indian films have enriched the cultural milieu of the country besides making astonishing advances in technical aspects of film-making. Keeping this in view…

Odd-even rule: The measure to control vehicular pollution has stared being enforced in Delhi by the AAP government

(AAP) which has taken this step to clear Delhi’s polluted air for our children,” Jain said. The transport minister urged the Centre and the BJP to extend their support to the drastic measure, saying the drive has become a “mass movement” and they should cooperate with it. “This is not a fight between AAP

and BJP or between Delhi and central government. This fight is against pollution and I appeal to BJP and Congress to come out and support this drive and make it a great success,” he said. Rai, who criss-crossed areas across Delhi to take stock of the scheme’s implementation, also “wholeheartedly”

thanked Delhi Police for ensuring implementing the scheme with total commitment. “I would also like to thank Delhi Police, Enforcement wing of the Transport department, sub divisional magistrates and civil defence volunteers for making the odd-even scheme a success.

a committee headed by Shri Shyam Benegal has been constituted to suggest the paradigm for ensuring such a milieu,” a statement released by the government said. Nihalani’s most recent victim was the new James Bond film, Spectre, whose snip of the kissing scenes he passed without watching the film. Fellow members of the Central Board

of Film Certification have charged him with running it as his “personal fiefdom”. “The recommendations of this committee are expected to provide a holistic framework and enable those tasked with the work of certification of films to discharge their responsibilities keeping in view this framework,” the government said.

A division bench of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court on Friday stayed the order of its single Bench, which had directed the state government to hoist the State flag at par with the National Flag on government buildings and official vehicles. The order came on a special leave petition filed by the BJP legislative council member from Kashmir valley and former top

counter insurgent and national secretary of BJP, Farooq Ahmad Khan, who had challenged the single bench order in the Jammu wing of the J&K high Court. The order was passed after the Jammu and Kashmir deputy Chief minister Nirmal Singh virtually challenged the single bench decision of Justice Hasnain Masoodi,

who passed the judgment one day before his retirement. Justice Masoodi said in his order, “The State flag has the same sanctity and position as the Union flag has under the Indian Constitution and other statutory provisions. Therefore, this sanctity and position has to be maintained at all costs.” “It connects the past with the present and future. (The) Flag while reminding us of struggle made by the people and their sacri-

fices also makes us aware of our aspirations,” the 27 December judgment read. When asked to comment on the stay ordered by a two-judge bench on hoisting of the State flag alongside National flag on constitutional buildings, senior BJP leader from Jammu and Kashmir and Minister of State in Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Jitender Singh said on Friday, “It won’t be right for me to comment on this issue.”

In 2016, let’s reset ourselves, against all odds, a little space for idealism

The assessment of the year past, the balance sheet of hits and misses, can be drawn up in different ways, depending on one’s political persuasions and allegiances. But all sides will, perhaps grudgingly, agree that the last year was marked by a continuing, and perhaps deeper, corrosion of idealism than usual. The big political task of the coming year will be to recover, against all odds, a little space for idealism: the idea that politics can be better than what it is. There are, doubtless, a lot of things happening, some even progressive. But the sense that we are trapped in deadends of language, leadership, institutions, and a sense of self constituted by layered resentments, is growing. It is easy to articulate what one might wish for in the coming year. It is harder to face the fact that conditions of possibility of giving any of those wishes meaning is diminishing. I am using idealism not in a philosophical sense that the world is the imprint of our ideas, or even the utopian sense that a more redeemed world is possible, or the deep moral sense where the self is sacrificed to higher moral good. I am using idealism in the sense of creating a world where the balance of hope and fear, trust and distrust, possibility and constraint, progress and inertia tends in the positive direction. But, in a subtle way, our crisis is deeper now because even the language in which we can begin to articulate a viewpoint is already considered corroded from the start; the words that are meant to carry the weight of the hopes of any party seem sinister even before they are uttered. “Liberal” has become the caricatured “Adarsh Liberal” or “neo-liberal,” a posture of hypocrisy and social privilege. “Toleration” has been twisted to the point where the critique of the intolerant carries more moral odium than intolerance itself. “Justice” is not about fine-grained moral judgments; it is becoming synonymous with satiated vengeance. The idea of the “public” and “private” is confused in its institutional articulation. Even the articulations of religious imaginations veer uneasily between deep aggression and defensiveness. “Development” is a series of projects with no framework or sense of reciprocity. And even the “Idea of India” is becoming more a sneer than a value. These words, meant to be a common currency in which some ideas can be articulated and differences handled, already signify failure rather than possibility. Our habits of argument, the technologies of interchange, now freeze and harden divides. Language has become a chasm rather than a bridge. It is in this sense that the articulation of idealism has become near The loss of language has been accompanied by the loss of exemplars.

It’s educative for kids to have a working mother: Kajol

Agency | New Delhi She reduced her film appearances out of choice when motherhood happened as she never believed in “dumping off my children and going off to work”. But after spreading her magic on the screen again with “Dilwale”, actress Kajol is enthused to take on more work in the film world now that her daughter and son are old enough. “I hope I will be seen on screen more… I’d like to work more now. I took a break right after ‘My Name Is Khan’ (2010) because my son was born and then he was still very young. Now my

son is five years old,” Kajol said. “I will be starting a film in the mid-2016, but no, I am not planning to do three films a year like Shah Rukh Khan, in any way. I can’t work as hard as him,” added the actress, whose effervescence is intact at 41. Kajol and Ajay, who got married in 1999, are parents to two children – daughter Nysa and son Yug. After the birth of her daughter in 2003, she did few films like “Fanaa”, “U Me Aur Hum”, “My Name Is Khan”, “We Are Family” and “Toonpur Ka Superhero”. And again, after Yug’s birth, Kajol decided she would devote her time to motherhood.

Bollywood actor Sohail Khan and Huma Qureshi have been rumoured to be dating for a while now. However, it is probably the first time Khan’s wife Seema has reacted to the rumours that have cropped up recently. Seema has rubbished all rumours of husband Sohail having an affair with the ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ actress. Huma was also believed to have appeared first on Sohail’s brother – superstar Salman Khan’s birthday bash recently, and left the Panvel farmhouse late. Reacting to these rumours, Seema was quoted to having said, “I don’t know what

is giving rise to these rumours. I was there at Panvel, as were my kids and my in-laws. I honestly didn’t see Huma there, so I don’t know if she was there or not. The farmhouse is huge and there were over 500 guests present, so no, I didn’t see her.” She further added, “Huma is friends with my brother-in-law and my sister-in-law too.

She is also the brand ambassador for CCL (Celebrity Cricket League, where Sohail Khan promotes the Mumbai team), but no I don’t think they (Sohail and Huma) hang out.” Huma Qureshi also came a step ahead to deny such rumours. Point Break review: This is the most boring year-opening film Agency | New Delhi

It’s truly the peak of irony. During a season when film exhibitors in India have shown exemplary cowardice by withholding new releases for fear of the mammoth triumvirate (Bajirao Mastani, Dilwale and Star Wars) comes this film about extreme, and idiotic, audacity. Point Break opens up the vista for the daring who like to risk their life for a sliver of the sporty. It’s not the kind of life that accommodates caution discretion or austerity in its scheme of existence. Point Break could have been a penetrating study of derringdo. What impels people to out their lives for fun and thrills? Rather than go into the logistics, Point Break merely becomes a mirror of the malaise, allowing the characters to plunge from one stunning stunt to another, and sometimes to just plunge to their death, without comment. This misguided film’s makers’

But does nothing to boost our faith in the power of cinema to create an abiding affinity between visuals and emotions. If these men feel anything beyond the thrill of the moment, then we don’t know about it. We will never know why Johnny Utah (Luke Bracey) does what he does. At the film’s start Johnny loses his friend to a motorbike stunt. Any sane sensible entity would stay away from extreme activities thereafter. Sanity and sensibleness being at a low

premium and discretion at the lowers ebb in this rapidfire just-for-kicks circus-on-speed, the characters do what they have to. Our hero Johnny is one moody maverick. One minute he is racing down ridges looking for sure death. The next minute he is recruited into the FBI to infiltrate a global crime syndicate which employs extreme sports to execute daring heists. If these are the sort of adventurous mercenaries that the FBI employs we are safe to presume the acronym is expandable to ‘Federal Bureau Of Idiocy’.

Agency | Sydney Australia look set to field two specialist spinners at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) for the first time in a decade when they host West Indies in a dead rubber New Year’s Test starting this weekend. An inexperienced and demoralised West Indies touring party succumbed by an innings and 212 runs in Hobart and 177 runs in Melbourne to hand their hosts an unassailable 2-0

lead in the three-match series. That position, and the likelihood of a turning wicket at the SCG, have encouraged Australia to test out the twin spin option of Nathan Lyon and Stephen O’Keefe ahead of their tour of Sri Lanka later this year. That the hosts can afford to put out an experimental side in one of the more venerable fixtures in the Australian sporting calendar is not to say there will be nothing at stake when the match gets underway

on Sunday (1030 GMT). For West Indies there is pride and a chance to show more of the fighting spirit that stalled Australia’s victory match in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne last weekend. A 3-0 sweep, meanwhile, would send Australia above India to second in the Test rankings and they would return to the summit if England can maintain a winning start and beat South Africa in their ongoing four-match series.

Despite his recent return to the national team for the T20 series against Australia, Yuvraj Singh was on Thursday released by the Delhi Daredevils from their squad while pacers Ishant Sharma and Dale Steyn were off-loaded by Sunrisers Hyderabad in the first trading window for the upcoming ninth season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Vetern left-hander Yuvraj, who was bought for a whopping Rs 16 crore by the GMR-owned franchise, turned out to be the biggest flop of IPL 2015 with only 248 runs from 14 matches at an average

of less than 20 (19.07). “Yuvraj Singh is a great player and the reason of releasing him is to rationalise our budget. He is in good form now and has got back to the Indian team. But there were budgetary constraints which led to the decision. I have personally spoken to Yuvraj. There are no hard feelings,” Daredev-

ils CEO Hemant Dua said on Thursday. As a result, Delhi Daredevils will go into the February auction with a purse of Rs 36.85 crore to spend on salary of players. “We have also released Angelo Mathews. So we are saving around Rs 23 crores (as Mathews was bought for Rs 7 crore),” said Dua.

Lava launches Ivory M4 to strengthen its tablet portfolio

Virat Kohli had stepped into the shoes of MS Dhoni at Test level. Captaining the side, he led from the front and almost snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in the first match at Adelaide. Then on, his batting held centre-stage in the four-Test series. He led in one more Test, and his success with the bat helped wipe out memories of a disastrous tour of England in 2014. The year didn’t exactly turn out as spectacular with the bat as it was expected to during the Tests; his performances were inconsistent in the ODI format. But it still ended on a pleasant note. in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Test rankings by blanking South Africa 3-0, after beating Sri Lanka in their den to mark his maiden series success. Ahead of India’s departure to Australia for the limited-overs series next week, Kohli probably may have to prepare for extra responsibility. With Dhoni winding down his career — this series could be the last or one of the last few ODI series for

him — the Test skipper has a point to prove in the shorter format. Last year, Kohli didn’t have a great time in the ODI tri-series in Australia before the World Cup. The highlight of his World Cup was a gritty, match-winning century against Pakistan in the opener, which set the tone for India. After that, the year saw him score only one more ODI century — against South Africa at home.

With full Wi-Fi, a taluka in Gujarat Fire threat: Lights out this Uttarayan begins the year trying to connect Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

Manjuben, 45, who never went to school, recently learnt to say “laptop”. Smiling indulgently at her 19-year-old son Ashok Kateriya, who is busy surfing the Internet, surrounded by the family’s goats, cows and calves, in Nana Mota village, she says one needs “mahiti (information)”. “Times have changed. We should have information. If you go to the market and you have no information of what is going around, you will come back like a fool. And I don’t mind my children spending money or time on this thing. It is much better than spending on tobacco and other such things,” says Manjuben. She also likes watching movies on Ashok’s Lenovo. Her son, meanwhile, is going through his newly opened Facebook account, balancing the laptop as it charges from the switch-

board hanging precariously above. His profile page is full of pictures of liplocked couples and quotes on love in English and Gujarati. His friends’ list shows several girls. “They are simply acquaintances,” says Ashok. Nana Mota is one of 32 villages in Khedbrahma taluka, of Sabarkantha district in north Gujarat. At the beginning of the year, a WiFi scheme was introduced

in Khedbrahma, with Chief Minister Anandiben Patel promising to make it “the country’s first Wi-Fi taluka”. Ninety per cent of Khedbrahma’s two lakh population is tribal — the Kateriyas are Dungaria Garasia Bhils — its literacy rate at 57 per cent is lowest for the district, and it generally makes news for practices such as witchcraft. However, that’s

the fire start. However, 16 luxurious tents have been burnt down. But tourists in the tents either rushed out or rescued on time and therefore nobody has been injured,” Dinesh Vadhwana, chief fire officer of Diu said. Three water bowsers of Diu fire and emergency service, one water bowser from Diu airport and two water tankers of public works department were pressed into service to control the fire. “We managed to put out the fire at around 1:30 PM but could not save the 16 tents,” Vadhwana further said. There were 60 tents in the Festival Village but the rest were saved. Police said they suspected electric short-circuit as the cause of the fire.

not what has come in the way of the scheme. Officials say the target was last-mile connectivity in backward areas. Internet towers were supposed to be installed in each panchayat, covering a 10- to 15-km radius, with panchayat offices themselves serving as browsing centres, providing instant information on government schemes and allowing online submission of forms.

Amit Bhavsar (35) runs a “seasonal shop” near Teen Darwaja for last 16 years. Ask for a tukkal (paper lantern of Chinese make) and he whispers “yes. it is available”, and after a brief pause, adds, “I do not keep it in my shop since it is banned, if you need it, I can arrange it for you.” He leads to a quiet corner and gives a pack which does not reveal what it contains. “Please open the package only when you reach home,” says Bhavsar. “These lanterns are not of last year’s stock, these are fresh lanterns.” The Gujarat High Court, on December 22 had banned manufacturing and sale of Chinese lanterns, which are released during Makar Sankranti along with kites, to light up the night sky. However, after a petition and tukkals reporting 21 fire incidents last season, the HC decided to ban these paper lanterns. Earlier, kitists used

Fire breaks out at Naik resigns as IIMA Chairman, search committee formed for replacement beach festival in Diu Correspondent | Rajkot

The New Year revelry at the ongoing beach festival in Diu was disturbed as a major fire broke out in the Festival Village on Nagva beach and damaged 16 luxurious tents on Friday. However, nobody was injured in the incident, officers said. The fire broke out at around 10:55 AM from one of the tents in the Festival Village, Diu Fire and Emergency Service said. However it spread to other parts of the tent village and before firefighters could control it, the blaze gutted 16 tents. One more tent was pulled down to isolate the fire and prevent it from spreading further. “We do not know as of now as to where did

Census 2011: Muslims in Gujarat ahead in child sex ratio

Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

The 2011 census data shows that Muslims in Gujarat have the highest child sex ratio of 927 girls per 1,000 boys, as compared to 917 in Christians, 885 in Hindus and 848 in Sikhs. Also according to the census data, literacy rate among Muslim women in the state is higher than among their Hindu counterparts. The child sex ratio among Gujaratis is 890 girls per 1,000 boys. And barring Muslims and Christians, no other community has crossed the 900 girl child mark, a TOI report quot-

ed census officials as saying. The census data also revealed that Muslims had higher literacy rates than Hindus in general. However, Jains, Sikhs and Christians had better literacy rates than Muslims in Gujarat, the report further said. The data showed that literacy rates of Jain men and women were almost at par to each other. However, in other communities, the gap in literacy between men and women was over 10 percent. Also, Christians in Gujarat have the highest percentage of working women 35%, Hindus 25%, Muslims 10.5% and

Jains 9.6%. The number of women non-workers in Muslims was 89.40%, it was over 90.84% among the Jain women and the Sikh community has over 88.71% women non-workers. Quoting sociologist Gaurang Jani, the report further said that among Muslims the acceptance of traditional madrassa education is very high, even among the girls, and hence influences the literacy count.

of close to four years. But going forward, owing to increased business responsibilities, I do not believe I will be able to do full justice to my position, and it would be best for all concerned if IIMA has a new person at the helm.” Mr. Naik had taken up Chairmanship of the Institute at a sensitive time, when it was looking for a new Director. Mr. Naik’s vision was to internationalize the institution, and continue to

to tie paper lanterns with candles in it to the string which would keep those in control, unlike the Chinese version. A few kilometres from Teen Darwaja, among the series of “seasonal stores” at Dilli Darwaja is the shop of Manojbhai Soni (52),who

refuses to sell the tukkal. “This shop is running since 50 years. My grandfather and father used to run it and my children are also going to carry our business forward. We have never sold tukkals in the season of Uttrayan. If customers ask for it,

we do provide them from other shops, but we genuinely believe that tukkals cause damage to the environment. The business will run without the sale of tukkals also, but before fun and enjoyment, safety should be taken into consideration and we all are in favor of the decision,” he says. After the ban, however, kite sellers have become careful. “It is risky to sell the lanterns to a stranger, which is why those are not at display,” said the owner of Shivnath Seasonal Store near Teen Dharwaja.

Govt teachers, corporates roped in to meet literacy target Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

In Order to meet the literacy target of 80 per cent under the national literacy mission, Gujarat has decided to rope in government school teachers and the corporate industry to impart education to those above 15 years of age, officials said. With the preraks (contractual teachers) leaving midway over low remuneration, the state education department’s Directorate of Literacy and Continuing Education has sought help from government school teachers who will be paid Rs 250 per person, DLCE assistant director Harshad Chaudhary said. The government plans to make literate a population of 30-35 lakh above the age group of 15. To fund the proposal, the government has approached the private firms through the Corporate Social Responsibility Authority, suggesting it to undertake the funding under its CSR

Sources said the response from CSRA is still awaited, and added that upon receiving a favourable response, the education department would kick-start its project from a village in Mehsana district. Referring to “shortage of preraks”, Chaudhary cited departmental records which say that posts of nearly 3,000 contractual teachers are vacant at present. This, he explained, is because preraks — appointed for an 11-month period to undertake teaching job

Health minister Nitin Patel faces Patel fury in Mehsana Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

Gujarat police, reeling under the sixmonth Patidar reservation stir where at least nine Patels were killed in police action to control violent mobs, is all set to change the way it controls riots. Key changes include cops using only polycarbonate sticks instead of lathis and pump-action 12 bore guns over lethal guns so as to incapacitate and not kill. This comes at a time when angry protests are back after a brief lull following Patidar leader Hardik Patel’s arrest. Tempers ran high in Mehsana on Thursday when
