The Congress party has lost its way as Indian politics’ prime player

We want a Congress Mkt Bharat,” thundered Narendra Modi in the 2014 general election campaign, a slogan echoed repeatedly BJP president, Amit Shah. The declared goal was not just to win an election, but to “eliminate” the Congress from the country’s national political map. Two years later, the Modi-Shah duo’s ambition is on track. If at the start of 2016, the Congress was ruling in nine states, it is now in charge in just seven states after its governments were dismissed in Arunachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. By May, it could lose two more — Assam and Kerala — where it is facing a tough battle to retain power. Just five states —Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka (four of them with less than 10 MPs between them) — may then remain within the Congress umbrella. Is India slowly becoming ‘Congress Mukt’ then? Undoubtedly, the BJP has replaced the Congress as the principal pole of Indian politics. It has also embraced the Congress “culture”: the party with a difference is now a regime which wields absolute power with ruthless efficiency at the Centre. Both in Arunachal, and more especially in Uttarakhand, the BJP has shown that is ready to use the politics of “saam, daam dand, bhed” to topple elected governments. Could the central government, for example, have not waited for a floor test in Dehradun before “flooring” the Harish Rawat government? To suggest that a sting operation or the act of a speaker in disqualifying defecting MLAs are reason enough to claim a “constitutional breakdown” smacks of a partisan interpretation of the law: the Bommai judgement has given primacy to a floor test. In a sense, the BJP has become “Congressified” since it is the Grand Old party which had originally misused Article 356 to reshape Centre-state equations. Finally, there is now a question mark over the future of the First Family, the glue that still holds the Congress together. Sonia Gandhi has increasingly looked like a leader in semi-retirement, keen for her son to take over. Rahul Gandhi in the year since he went off on a mysterious leave of absence has been far more visible but still hasn’t made the transition from activist to 24x7 leader. Taking up a range of issues from JNU to net neutrality, agrarian distress to Dalit rights has energised his public profile but still doesn’t offer a road map for rehabilitating a comatose party apparatus. Indeed, the Uttarakhand MLAs while quitting the Congress claimed that they had attempted to meet Mr Gandhi for a month without success. “He can meet Kanhaiya Kumar, but not us,” one of the MLAs claimed.

Ki and Ka movie review: Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor starrer’s execution gets rocky

Agency | New Delhi I count amongst some of my best friends, house husbands. Or let’s put it in a slightly more nuanced way, men who like to stay home, take charge of the household, be the primary caregiver for parents and children. They know that they come in for more than their share of goodhumoured ribbing as well as nasty jibes, and they have learnt to take it in their stride because they are supremely comfortable doing what they do. Oh, and before I forget,

their wives go to work, are great at their demanding jobs, and get in the lolly. With ‘Ki and Ka’, Bollywood has got to the point of being able to place a man willing to be home, knuckle down to dull domestic chores, and wave the flag for ambitious women and progressive men. So hurrah for Ka and Ki and Balki? Yes, but only up to point. The film is fun when it is setting up the roles. But the execution, as it goes along, gets rocky. Much of it stays episodic, and starts reinforc-

ing the very stereotypes it set out to negate. And so much of the writing is so explicatory that you begin wondering if the filmmakers really take their viewers for People Who Do Not Understand Anything Unless It Is Underlined Thrice Over. Kia (Kareena Kapoor) and Kabir (Arjun Kapoor) get past their meet-cute in a tearing hurry, and jump into an exchange of garlands and glands. All is hunky-dory to begin with : Ka rolls out of bed, picks up after his office-going wife and mum-in-law (Swaroop Sampat ; good to see her back on screen), lays out steaming hot `khana’ ; Ki cracks open her Mac, and delivers smart campaign ideas to her advertising agency colleagues ( great excuse for lots of product placements, yo), and goes up the corporate ladder.

Salman Khan doesn’t want a stunt double for major action scene in Sultan Agency | Mumbai

Salman Khan recently shot for a major pre-climax action sequence for Ali Abbas Zafar’s Sultan. It features a kite-running sequence which involves parkour and Salman will be seen running, climbing, swinging, vaulting, jumping and rolling on the streets and from terrace to terrace — all by himself without a stunt double as the scene had to look authentic and raw.Says a source close to the film, “Salman plays a wrestler from Haryana. All the action sequences are very stylised, yet raw and real. While Salman had learned parkour earlier for Ek Tha

Tiger, the one in Sultan is more realistic and complicated. It’s centred around a kite-running event and Salman not only trained for it but also lost 12 kgs for the scene. Kite-running or patang baazi is a common sport in India where people compete with each other about how high their kites

can go till they get cut. Ali Abbas has incorprated a stylised parkour sequence in the chase scene.” Parkour requires a certain atheletic body type and weight balance and Salman had to leap from one terrace to another without the help of any cables, which is dangerous.

Baahubali director SS Rajamouli reveals his scariest moment on set involving Prabhas Agency | New Delhi

A lot of hard work has been put into the making of Baaghi as Shraddha Kapoor and Tiger Shroff performed all stunts on their own without any harness Agency | New Delhi

The trailer of Shraddha Kapoor, Tiger Shroff starrer Baaghi has already been on the watch list of many ever since it released. The stunts that the duo have indulged in are jaw dropping. The duo are true dare devil’s as they pulled off all the scenes without any ropes or harness. A lot of hard work has been put into the mak-

ing of Baaghi and the actors have brought out every bit of heroism in them by taking it to themselves to perform all stunts and action during the shooting. Sajid Nadiadwala’s Baaghi is a rebellious Love story which will feature Shraddha and Tiger going against all odds for love. Directed by Sabbir Khan, the Shraddha Kapoor, Tiger Shroff starrer will release on April 29.

Ever since the epic fantasy film Baahubali: The Beginning hit the screens last July, everyone is eager to know more about the great director who made this masterpiece. While SS Rajamouli is an icon in Tollywood, the rest of the country knows little about him. So here is a little video where he talks about some interesting aspects of the film. And yes, he also answers why Kattappa killed Baahubali. When asked about the toughest and scariest moment on set, the director revealed that it was not a single moment but a series of moments. Remember the epic scene where Shivudu, that is Prabhas, finally climbs up the steep mountain against the waterfall? Yes,

the one which involved a whole lot of breathtaking jumps by the actor. It turns out that these scenes were really hard for Rajamouli. Prabhas had recently recovered from a shoulder injury for which he had undergone a surgery. So the director knew that one mishap and he could risk the lead of his film. So that was a really scary time for Rajamouli. He also got candid about many other

things regarding the film. When asked about who is the prankster on the set, the director revealed that it was our very own Bhallaladeva, that is Rana Daggubati. And then he finally answered why Kattappa killed Baahubali, but don’t get your hopes up, because the mystery is still intact. Rajamouli laughed and simply answered that because he asked him too.

Shah Rukh Khan’s Fan gets no love from censors, receives 7 cuts

Agency | New Delhi Shah Rukh Khan’s Fan has fallen foul of the Censor Board of Film Certification and has met the same fate as James Bond’s last outing Spectre, Priyanka Chopra’s Jai Gangaajal and Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool. A day after director Maneesh Sharma managed to bag the U/A certificate claimed that the film has undergone at

least seven cuts, including one visual cut. Friday that a scene was cut short as it showed “prolonged police brutality”. Shah Rukh, who plays the obsessive star stalker Gaurav Chanana, is being thrashed in lock-up while the star Aryan Khanna (also played by SRK) urges the cops to continue the merciless thrashing. “The scene of prolonged violence in a

lock-up where one Shah Rukh Khan urges the cops to beat up the other Shah Rukh was found to be unnecessarily prolonged. The censor board has asked for the sequence to be reduced by 50%.” The film has received six verbal cuts, including Hindi and English cuss words and abuses. The film revolves around a fan, who is a doppelganger of his favorite star, Aryan Khanna. SRK plays a double role and at least one of his characters displays shades of grey. At the launch of Fan anthem, SRK was asked about the similarities between his psychotic obsessive roles from Darr and Anjaam, and Fan. He said.

Kung Fu Panda 3 review: Hope you’re hungry for more awesomeness, and Po Agency | New Delhi

What was my first reaction after watching Kung Fu Panda 3 with its A-list voice cast (Angelina Jolie, Jack Black, Bryan Cranston, JK Simmons, Dustin Hoffman blah blah), visual splendour, stunning 3D effects and the bumbling world saviour Po? That I wanted dumplings, and noodles, and soup. But mostly dumplings. For those who came in late, Kung Fu Panda 3 is the third coming of Po, a food-loving panda who is destined to become the dragon warrior but simply can’t believe it. No sir, three films down and he is still to come to terms with it. This is his charm and his impediment – others have

The National Award is the jewel in the crown. I was trying to make the film for 12 years. I felt this time, Bajirao and Mastani’s souls blessed the film, and that’s why the movie happened. I guess their blessings came to us, which is why the right casting happened, budget came on, the infrastructure was in place and I shot the most difficult scenes, effortlessly. I feel the 12 year delay was a test of my vision. I didn’t lose sight of my goal all through my three attempts of making

3 / Dt. 02-04-2016, Saturday Tata Steel eyes buying parts of Germany’s ThyssenKrupp

Agency | Frankfurt Tata Steel, which has announced it is putting its troubled British business up for sale, is in talks over the possible purchase of parts or all of ThyssenKrupp’s European steel operations, a German newspaper reported on Friday. The speculation of a tieup with Tata Steel appeared to appeal to investors with ThyssenKrupp shares the biggest gainers on the Frankfurt stock exchange on Friday, shooting up more than 6% in a generally softer market. The regional daily Rheinische Post quoted German government sources as saying that talks were already at an advanced stage and that a number of different options were being considered. The favourite option is not a straightforward purchase, but a joint venture with the possibility of increasing Tata Steel’s stake later on, the newspaper said.

World T20: India v/s West Indies heartbreak at Wankhede Agency | Mumbai West Indies match-winner Lendl Simmons said he felt jittery going into Thursday’s World Twenty20 semi-final against India at the Wankhede Stadium. The 31-yearold was only called into the squad on Tuesday as a replacement for injured all-rounder Andre Fletcher. “When I went out to bat I had a clear mind what I wanted to do because we had a plan,” Simmons told reporters after his hard-hitting 82 not out helped West Indies reach their target of 193 with two balls to spare. “Before the game I was a bit nervous ... I felt a bit of pressure on myself but it was good we had a target to chase.” West Indies had batted second in all their previous four matches in the tournament, losing just one game against rank out-

Microsoft announces new free development tools for developers

Agency | New Delhi Technology giant Microsoft has unveiled new free development tools for its developers including those in India to help them easily build apps and reach the largest possible number of customers. On the second day of its annual developers’ conference ‘Build 2016’ here, Microsoft announced the new free development tools which include new cloud services, developer tools and productivity extensions, to help every developer more easily scale their apps for every platform and reach the largest possible number of customers. ”Microsoft is the only cloud vendor that supports the diverse needs of every organisation and developer from core infrastructure services to platform services and tools to software-as-a-service for any language, across any platform,” Microsoft’s Executive Vice President of the Cloud and Enterprise Group Scott Guthrie said. India’s developer community of over a million is among the largest in the world for Microsoft. ”With 30 regions worldwide, more than every major cloud provider combined, Azure’s massive scale means developers and businesses alike can focus on creating the next generation of amazing applications, not their underlying cloud infrastructure. This makes our cloud the de facto choice for enterprises of today and tomorrow,” Guthrie said.

On Thursday, by beating Kazakhstan’ Kairat Yeraliev to reach the bantamweight finals of the Asia and Oceania Olympic qualifiers, Shiva Thapa became the first Indian boxer to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics. Standing in his corner, a tired Gurbax Singh Sandhu says he breathed a huge sigh of relief. On Wednesday night, in his room in Quianán, China, Sandhu, coach of the Indian boxing team had slept fitfully. “I was walking back and forth and simply couldn’t relax and lie down,” said Sandhu. What was bothering Sandhu was his team’s results thus far at the Asia and Oceania Olympic qualifiers. India had sent a thirteen member

siders Afghanistan. India went into the game banking on their wily spinners to keep the explosive West Indian batsmen quiet but the evening dew wrecked their plans.Ravichandran Ashwin bowled just two overs, giving away 20 runs, while left-armer Ravindra Jadeja conceded 48 in his four overs.“It was a bad toss to lose,” said Dhoni. “There was a considerable amount of dew which meant the spinners couldn’t bowl how they would have liked. “It

was coming on nicely and the ball was getting wet so that was the difference between the first and second innings.”Dhoni has often used Suresh Raina’s part-time off-spin to get through the middle overs but the conditions on Thursday meant he could not turn to him this time. Earlier, West Indian Samuel Badree, the world’s top-ranked T20 bowler, kept the home batsmen quiet with his accurate leg-spin as he claimed one for 26 in four overs.

While Shiva Thapa was the top seed in the bantamweight (56kg) division his outsized confidence wasn’t entirely justified.

squad to the tournament. As of Thursday morning, only three had the chance to book a place for Rio. “Frankly the results we had got so far had been disappointing. Boxing in India has been facing a lot of problems with the lack of a federation but at the same time, how would I be able to explain that we had gone with a 13-member squad and hadn’t had

a single member qualifying for the Olympics so far,” said Sandhu. “Vikas Krishan lost a very one sided bout in his first match. Mandeep Jangra, from whom we had a lot of hopes too lost early. Yesterday Sarita lost a very close decision. So we were wondering what we could do to finally get some good news,” Sandhu adds.

WT20: England back at Eden, where a reverse sweep cost them the ‘87 WC Agency | Kolkata

That reverse sweep is part of the Eden Gardens folklore. Allan Border will never forget that, and certainly not Mike Gatting. Batting has improved by leaps and bounds now, and thanks to Twenty20 cricket, the reverse sweep isn’t a big deal now. But 29 years ago, it was. So it might pass as mere coincidence that England resorted to the same shot to blaze into the World T20 final that is to be held at a venue where it had shot down their chances of winning the World Cup. Few batsmen dared to reverse sweep back in 1987. Cut from a different cloth though, Gatting dared to first sweep past India in the semi-final before his belligerence got the bet-

ter of him in the summit clash. Chasing 253, England were cruising at 135/2 after 31 overs when Aussie skipper Border decided to bowl his left-arm spin in front of a packed Eden Gardens. His first ball was going down leg, prompting Gatting to attempt a reverse sweep. But he only got a top edge that ballooned to be caught by wicket-keeper Greg Dyer. With that evaporated En-

gland’s hopes of winning the World Cup, in their second final. In three decades, the reverse sweep has been mastered, improvised and infused with more power courtesy the thick blades being used these days. And England have shown that the shot is now ingrained in their T20 repertoire, as displayed by Jason Roy, Jos Buttler and then Joe Root in the semi-final against New Zealand.

This should be termed as the rarest of rare instance when Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni underused Ravichandran Ashwin’s services in the crucial semi-final clash against West Indies in the ongoing T20 World Cup. No matter what happens, or how many runs Ashwin leaks, MS Dhoni has always looked upon him in crunch situations to get the team out of danger. But this time around he wasn’t able to produce the results expected from him, thanks to a rare no ball from Ashwin that turned the game around, which gave Lendl Simmons a second chance to

wreak havoc on Wankhede pitch. He wasn’t brought back to the attack after getting struck for a six by ‘lucky’ Simmons post the no-ball. At the end of the match Ashwin’s bowling figures read 20 for 0 in 2 overs. Yes, he was expensive but that includes a free hit, also keeping in mind the dew factor. He almost removed the dan-

ger man Simmons who edged one to short third man, only to be caught by the diving fielder Jasprit Bumrah. That no ball proved lethal as Simmons went onto become the Player of the match for his quick fire and extremely lucky innings of 82 in 51 balls. In spite of the no-ball drama Ashwin could have got them a wicket once again.
