Indian soldiers mutilated: Defence Minister Arun Jaitley vows retaliation as Pakistan denies charges Agency | Jammu Describing the mutilation of two Indian soldiers by Pakistan’s Border Action Team as an “extreme form of barbaric act”, Defence Minister Arun Jaitley on Monday insisted that their sacrifice won’t go in vain. While condemning the act, Jaitley said the armed forces will give a befitting reply to their neighbour at an appropriate time. “This is a reprehensible and an inhuman act. Such attacks do not take place during war,” he added. Two Indian security force personnel were killed and their bodies were mutilated during an attack by Pakistan’s BAT team on a patrol party along the Line of Control (LoC) in Krishna Ghati sector of Poonch district. Reacting to the incident, the Northern Command of the Indian Army
issued a statement saying, “such despicable act of Pakistan Army will be appropriately responded.” “Pakistan Army carried out unprovoked Rocket and Mortar firing on two forward posts on the line of control in Krishna Ghati Sector. Indian politics: AntiCongress-ism could not be a permanent strategy Indian politics is gearing up for its favourite game, Elections. In the old days, the Congress was the big team and the challenge was to build a coalition to defeat it. Ram Manohar Lohia made anti-Congressism into a political ideology. That strategy succeeded in challenging the monopoly the Congress had in the 1967 election. Then, with extra help of JP, the anti-Congress coalition of Janata Party succeeded in defeating Indira Gandhi in the 1977 election. But the Janata coalition did not endure. It broke up into Janata with various parenthetical letters Janata (U), (S) etc. The only fraction which waxed was the Jan Sangh, which rebranded itself as the BJP. Anti-Congressism could not be a permanent strategy. In 2009, we saw the largest coalition prepared to unseat the UPA. In those days, the BJP was untouchable, so all the rest ganged up against the Congress. Of course it did not work. UPA II got an even larger majority than UPA I. The reason was simple. The coalition had no coherent ideology or programme except being against the Congress. That may please politicians, but does not impress voters. The Congress then had a programme for development. Its opponents had nothing. The Congress was lucky in its opponents. Move fast forward and we are back at the same game. Now the BJP has replaced the Congress as the Ogre. There are preparations for a giant coalition of all parties except the members of the NDA. There is no coherence as before. There is no programme except anti-BJPism, which sadly means courting the Muslim vote bank. The example of the Bihar election was touted for a while as a surefire strategy. In Bihar there was a sensible sharing of seats between the RJD and the JD(U). Since then, everyone dreams of repeating Bihar. This will be difficult. In Uttar Pradesh, the Bihar strategy did not work. Can it be made to work again? The election is yet two years away. But even on the urgent question of the candidate for President, the coalition does not seem to have agreed. They want to re-nominate Pranab Mukherjee. No matter how good a President he has been, this sounds more like disagreement within the coalition over the likely names. Anti-BJPism will have to invent a better story to tell. The BJP is gearing up to be the sole national party like the Congress used to be. You can hear it in the way Amit Shah lays down his ambitious programme. It is a tried and true formula. It will work as it used to for the Congress. Capture the disgruntled elite of other parties in every region. Principles are secondary; personalities are all. Secure the leaders and the votes will follow. It works because there is very little difference between the parties on ideological issues. Despite the cacophony of political arguments, there is a depressing homogeneity in the political ideology of all parties. There is neither a strong Left party, the CPM/CPI having become just a bad-tempered version of the Congress.

SBI Reduces Term Deposit Rates By Up To 0.5%

Country’s largest lender State Bank of India has cut its term deposit rates by up to 50 basis points for various maturities. The rates have been revised for medium and long term deposits and for amount below Rs. 1 crore. According to the new structure, for two to less than three years deposits, SBI will offer a rate of 6.25 per cent as compared to 6.75 per cent earlier, the bank said. For the similar maturity, the deposit rates for senior citizen have been cut to
6.75 per cent from 7.25 per cent. For deposits maturing between three years and 10 years, the rates have been lowered by 25 basis points to 6.50 per cent. The lender will be offering the new rates for fresh deposits and renewals and are applicable from April 29, 2017. The short term deposits, that is, for deposits maturing between seven days to less than two years, the rates have been left unchanged. The bank is offering highest rates of 6.90 per cent for one year to 455 days term deposits. SBI has also not changed its marginal cost of funds based lending rates. Its one-year MCLR is at eight per cent.

The appointments assume significance as members of civil services have been demanding same career growth as being enjoyed by IAS officers. Katikithala is a 1989 batch IAS officer of Gujarat cadre. He has been appointed as JS, DoPT for a period of five
years, an official order said. Senior bureaucrat Anil Srivastava, who is at present Joint Secretary in Ministry of Civil Aviation, will be Advisor, Niti Aayog. Srivastava, a 1985 batch IAS officer of Madhya Pradesh cadre, will hold the post up to February 14, 2019, it said. Upma Srivastava has been appointed new JS in Civil Aviation Ministry, in Anil Srivastava’s place. Nidhi Chhibber will be Joint Secretary in Defence Ministry. Jatindra Nath Swain has been appointed JS, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. K Vinayak Rao, an officer of Indian Railway Accounts Service, has been appointed Member (Finance) in Delhi Development Authority (DDA). A Ghodasar resident has filed a complaint with Satellite police against a realtor alleging cheating of Rs 25.19 lakh. It is the second complaint against the promoters of Saturn Infracon Ltd. Satellite police said, Sneha Padhiyar, 33, a resident of Bhagya Jivan Flats, Jashodanagar, had alleged that Raman Kapoor, his wife Seema Kapoor (both residents of Vastrapur), Kapoor’s personal assistant Feni Panchal and others had taken Rs 25.19 lakh for booking a plot in their scheme in March 2015. According to the com-
plaint, Padhiyar did not get the plot as promised within stipulated time nor did the firm return her money. After this she had decided to approach the police. A Satellite police officer said that earlier, on March 2, a complaint against Raman and Seema Kapoor had been filed alleging cheating of Rs 2.13 crore. ”More than 14 investors, including a lawyer, had approached senior city police officials after which the complaint was filed at Satellite police station,” he said. “The complainants had mentioned that the promoters of Saturn Infracon Ltd, located in Ambawadi, had collected monthly instalments for ownership of a plot measuring 142 sq feet at Limdi near Surendranagar. However, the victims did not get possession as promised,” the Satellite police officer said.
