Now, Manish Sisodia alleges BJP trying to ‘buy’ seven AAP MLAs at Rs 10 crore each New Delhi : Two days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi stirred a hornet’s nest by claiming that 40 Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLAs were in touch with him, Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Wednesday alleged that seven AAP legislators had been offered Rs 10 crore each to switch over to BJP. Accusing the BJP of indulging in horse-trading, Sisodia claimed BJP had earlier too tried to “buy” AAP MLAs and they were given an appropriate response by the public. “Since the BJP does not have any development issue to raise, it has now come down to indulging in horse-trading by attempting to buy seven of our MLAs at Rs 10 crore each,” Sisodia said. Referring to Modi’s claims at a rally in West Bengal’s Serampore that 40 TMC MLAs would switch sides once the BJP wins the Lok Sabha elections,

Masood Azhar designated global terrorist by UN Security Council JeM Chief Masood Azhar Global Terrorist: The development comes a month after China had put a hold on a fresh proposal by the US, UK and France to impose a ban on the chief of the JeM which claimed responsibility for the deadly Pulwama terror attack.

Sisodia said it did not behove the prime minister to make such remarks. “It does not suit the prime minister to make such comments. He (Modi) should realise that India is a democratic country and he is here because of democracy,” Sisodia said. TMC has already written a letter to the Election Commission alleging a violation of the model code. The BJP, however, rubbished the claim terming it “bizarre allegation” and a “desperate bid to gain attention”. “The AAP is baffled as it is losing the elections and its leaders are trying desperately to gain attention by making bizarre allegations,” BJP media head Ashok Goyal said.

New Delhi : In a major diplomatic win for India, the United Nations on Wednesday designated Pakistan-based Jaish-eMohammed chief Masood Azhar a global terrorist after China lifted its technical hold on his listing under the UNSC 1267 sanctions committee. The designation will subject Azhar to an assets freeze, travel ban and an arms embargo. The JeM has already been designated as a terror outfit by the United Nations. “Big, small, all join together. Masood Azhar designated as a terrorist in UN sanctions list. Grateful to all for their support,” India’s Ambassador to the United Nations Syed Akbaruddin tweeted. Chinese Foreign

Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said Beijing lifted its hold after it found no objection to the listing proposal by the US, the UK and France. “On this listing issue, China has been communicating with relevant parties in a constructive and responsible fashion. Recently, relevant countries revised and re-submitted the materials for the listing proposal to the 1267 Committee. After careful study of the revised materials and taking into consideration the opinions of relevant parties concerned, China does not have an objection to the listing proposal,” he said. France, one of the sponsors of the proposal to list Azhar as a global terrorist at the

UN, was the first country to welcome the move. “This decision taken at the United Nations Security Council signals the successful realisation of our efforts,” the French Foreign Ministry said. The development comes a month after China, a veto-

wielding permanent member of the Security Council, had put a hold on a fresh proposal by the US, UK and France to impose a ban on the chief of the JeM, which claimed responsibility for the deadly Pulwama terror attack where 40 CRPF personnel were

Tej Bahadur Yadav was fielded as a Samajwadi Party candidate against Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. The move was seen as an exercise in optics and even the party of Arvind Kejriwal - who had taken on PM Modi in 2014 - said it would back him. In 2014, Mr Kejriwal had contested against PM Modi and got more than two lakh votes.

Ay o d h y a : P r i m e Minister Narendra Modi, at a rally in Ayodhya district in Uttar Pradesh today, said while opposition parties had a track record of going soft on terrorism, his government was the only one that could defeat terror, which, he said, was the need of the hour. On his first visit to Ayodhya since he came to power in 2014, PM Modi did not talk about the Ram temple but ended his speech by chanting: “Jai Shri Ram, Jai Jai Shri Ram”. Accused of exploiting the Pulwama terror attack and the military operations in Balakot in his campaign, the Prime Minister stayed close to that theme also in today’s rally. “Whether the danger is within the borders or beyond, naya Hindustan ghar mein ghus kar marega (new India will eliminate them in their homes). We will reply to bullets with bullets,” he said,

The opposition has repeatedly flagged the PM’s references to national security, terror and the forces

in his speeches. The rally took place in the Ambedkarnagar Nagar lok sabha seat , parts of which fall in the Ayodhya district. It is around 25 km from the town that is home to the temple-mosque dispute. The days were past when there was a terror attack almost everyday in the country, the PM said, targeting rival parties including the Congress. “In the last five years we haven’t heard of such news. But it doesn’t mean terrorists are finished. Terror factories are still running in our neighbourhood . Their only industry is the export

Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly condemned the Naxal attack on security personnel, saying perpetrators of such violence will not be spared. “Strongly condemn the despicable attack on our security personnel in Gadchiroli, Maharashtra. I salute all the brave personnel. Their sacrifices will never be forgotten,” he tweeted.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Director General of Police Subodh Kumar Jaiswal said that the Naxal attack was not a result of intelligence failure. Terming it a “big loss” for the force, Mr. Jaiswal said that police “were ready to give a befitting reply to the Naxals”. “I cannot call this an intelligence failure... killed. The proposal was the fourth such bid at the UN in the last 10 years to list Azhar as a global terrorist. China had blocked Azhar’s listing in 2009, 2016 and 2017. Interestingly, China had placed its technical hold despite Beijing signing off on a UNSC statement that “condemned in the strongest terms” the Pulwama terror attack and named Jaish-eMohammad for the “heinous and cowardly suicide bombing”. The efforts to resolve Azhar’s listing issue had gathered momentum in the past month as Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale spoke to his counterparts in all key UNSC member countries and visited Washington and Beijing.

BJP will return to power : Shah Kalyani : BJP president A m i t S h a h We d n e s d a y exuded confidence that the party will return to power in the ongoing parliamentary elections with Narendra Modi as prime minister. He stepped up his attack on TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is among BJP’s most strident critics, and said she was supporting those who wished to divide the country byseparating Kashmir from India. “But this party (BJP) will continue its fight to ensure that Kashmir remains an integral part of India, no matter who is in power at the Centre,” Shah said addressing rallies in different Lok Sabha constituencies of West Bengal which go to the polls in the fifth phase on May 6.

Ban burqas in India: Shiv Sena asks PM Narendra Modi after Sri Lanka move Mumbai : Welcoming Sri Lanka’s decision to ban the niqab or face veil in the wake of the Easter Sunday attacks, the Shiv Sena Wednesday demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi follow in its footsteps and ban burqas in India. In an editorial in its mouthpiece, Saamana, the party said the demand is being made in the national interest. “It has happened in Ravana’s Sri Lanka. When will it happen in Ram’s Ayodhya? We are asking this question as PM Modi is scheduled to visit Ayodhya today,” said the editorial noting that the current dispensation has enacted a law against triple talaq in a bid to prevent the exploitation of Muslim women. It further said that Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has shown courage by announcing that wearing the face veil in public places is a criminal offence. “The Sri Lankan president announced the restrictions as an emergency

measure to ensure that the security forces do not face any difficulty in identifying people. People wearing facemasks or other veils could pose a danger to national and social security,” the editorial read. The Sena further said there were no Mahatma Jyotirao Phule or Shahu Maharaj (social reformers in Maharashtra) in the Muslim community. “So, it has worked in favour of whimsical leaders like Shahabuddin, Azam Khan, Owaisi brothers and Abu Azmi. If such religious practices and the traditions are coming in the way of national security, then it must be ended. Modi needs to do all this. It is an equally courageous work, like the surgical strike,” Sena added.

The Akshay-Modi ‘show’ and perpetuating farmer injustice In what can only be described as his latest performance, Akshay Kumar acts as a journalist interviewing Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He is convincing as a hesitant, rookie reporter in awe of his subject, apologetically telling a joke about Gujaratis which yields a polite, indulgent smile. Another question he asked has provoked considerable mirth among those who saw the show. How do you eat a mango? Do you cut it into small pieces and chew them one by one, or do you suck the juice? In the annals of Indian journalism, this question will rank on par with what Prasoon Joshi had asked Modi last year—You don’t want anything for yourself; you are a fakir (ascetic). Were you always like that or did it happen gradually? Both the options Akshay Kumar offered Modi—chewing a mango or sucking its juice—show the massive disconnect with the Indian farmer’s life. It perpetuates the idea that the farmer is the self-sacrificing provider of nourishment, sustenance and pleasure, with little rights. Akshay Kumar is interested in the one who consumes and his joys, and not in the one who produces and her travails. He wants to know how Modi, as India’s First Consumer, derives an intensely sensual joy. Modi had an excellent opportunity to lift the interview from a trivial pursuit and to shift it from the ridiculous to the sublime. He could have spoken about something far more important—what the farmer gained from the mango he grew. But that requires empathy and a sincere interest in the lives of others, which the prime minister is not necessarily known for, unless the individual concerned has been vetted and plays the role assigned. His interlocutors, including those who ask him questions, appear to be chosen carefully; he has avoided being ambushed by anyone who might ask him a serious question. Recall the lack of empathy, when the prime minister does not stop to ask after a reporter covering him who has got hurt; recall too how brusquely he has shoved aside people, from Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook to his own security detail, because they are between him and the camera. Instead of showing sensitivity towards the plight of the farmers, Modi took the question at face value— it was about him, after all—and told a story from his childhood, about the kind farmer who doesn’t mind when poor children come to his farm to eat mangoes. The farmer is the compassionate giver, letting the kids take mangoes from his orchard; Everyone shares and adjusts. Indeed, some farmers are like that. But equally, some get angry and bring out their stick and chase the kids. The image Modi has created of the farm is bucolic. It is found only in Bollywood movies, the reality Akshay Kumar is most familiar with. You can picture the image of Manoj Kumar singing mere desh ki dharti in Upkar, and more recently, the photo opportunity for Hema Malini, the BJP candidate in Uttar Pradesh, who re-enacted schmaltzy scenes as a farmer. Only Lakshmikant-Pyarelal’s music was missing. The farmers’ reality is vastly different. Their land-holdings are small and their debt burden huge. Many farmers have no choice but to rely on their children, or get other poor children, to work on the farm. Mechanization is limited, electric supply often erratic, irrigation supply sometimes controlled by upper caste farmers who live further upstream. The vocation is a gamble with the monsoon. Once the crop is harvested, the middlemen step in. They pay low prices for the produce, and then blame the market or the government. Meanwhile, the state subsidizes the mollycoddled vocal urban consumers—those who get to eat those juicy mangoes—as ice cream, as smoothies, as milk shakes, in lassi, and in their raw form, in pickles. Meanwhile, input costs rise. If there’s a bumper crop, the resulting glut crashes the procurement price, keeping the farmer impoverished. He then sees no hope. He is shocked when Modi announces the pointless ‘demonetisation’, sucking liquidity from the countryside, the effects of which are felt for months. The farmer then marches to distant capitals— Mumbai - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara and Delhi— demanding Editor justice.

Spurs didn’t put up the best of their shows as they were completely outplayed in the first 30 minutes of the match, which is one Ajax had struck. They eventually grew into the match and even

Tottenham were without their stars Harry Kane and Son Heung-min - the ones who are usually at the end of those big chances. However, Christian Eriksen admitted that the London club played “below-par”. Ajax absolutely ran them over initially and even after they gained control, Ajax could quite easily hold them off.

RoC to tell government if Jet Airways promoters need to be probed

The RoC report will tell the government if an investigation into promoters’ conduct is needed or not

New Delhi : The Registrar of Companies (RoC), Mumbai, will in about a month’s time tell the government whether promoters of the defunct Jet Airways (India) Ltd need to be investigated for any diversion of funds from the company. The government has decided to speed up inspection of the books of Jet Airways that was ordered last August shortly after the company deferred its first quarter FY19 results. Although major shareholders of companies cannot be held liable for a business failure, any diversion of fund from the company by promoters can

deprive them of their limited liability. The RoC report will tell the government if an investigation into promoters’ conduct is needed or not. RoC’s inspection of a company’s books is similar to a preliminary fact finding exercise which will lay the ground for further action. “It could be a detailed investigation by the RoC itself or by any other detective agency,” a person familiar with the development said on the

condition of anonymity. The move comes at a time when the process of share sale in Jet Airways led by its lenders is underway. The insolvent carrier has come to a precarious situation where neither the existing promoters, nor the lenders have shown willingness to infuse the emergency funding that the company needs to remain afloat till a turnaround plan is agreed between shareholders and lenders.

New Delhi : Delhi Capitals have made it to the playoffs this season for the first time since 2012. With 8 wins from 12 games, the national-capital based outfit is in a strong position to finish in the top two. That will give them a couple of chances to make it to their first ever IPL final. And while the credit should definitely go to the players, one just cannot undermine the contribution of head coach Ricky Ponting. The likes of Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Kagiso Rabada and Chris Morris are with the franchise for quite some time now. They, however, had failed to change the team’s fortunes before Ponting took over last season. After a forgettable first season

with the team, the legendary cricketer has weaved his magic this time around. The former Australia skipper has completely transformed the fortunes of a team that is full of youngsters. The Delhi-based outfit has pretty much made light work of almost all the opposition this seasons as they have won 8 of their 12 matches. Throughout the season, Ponting has been garnering praise for his work. And now quite a number of Indian fans are pondering whether Ponting could become the next coach for Team India. With Ravi Shastri’s contract set to expire after the World Cup, the fans are harbouring the chances of seeing Ponting in the Indian dugout.

Facebook Unveils a Design Overhaul as a Part of Pivot to Private Messaging Mumbai : Facebook Inc debuted an overhaul of its core social network on Tuesday, taking its first concrete steps to refashion itself into a private messaging and e-commerce company as it tries to move past scandals while tapping new revenue sources. Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg unveiled a fresh design for the world’s biggest social network that de-emphasised its News Feed. It also ditched the signature blue banner that has been on the app since its launch. The new design showcases

SPORTS ROUNDUP

Facebook’s messaging app, online marketplace and videoon-demand site, while giving greater prominence to the popular photo-driven Stories feature. The company also rolled out features aimed at encouraging users to interact with their close social circle as well as with businesses, such as a “Secret Crush” option for Facebook Dating and a tool for appointment booking. “As the world gets bigger and more connected, we need that sense of intimacy more than ever. That’s why I believe that the

future is private. This is the next chapter for our services,” said Zuckerberg, speaking at Facebook’s annual F8 conference, where the company

gives developers a peek at product releases. Investors greeted the announcements, mostly launching lowermargin businesses, with a

lukewarm response. Facebook shares ended down 0.7 percent on Tuesday. Zuckerberg in March promised changes to the advertising-driven social media company, which has come under regulatory scrutiny over propaganda on its platform and violations of users’ data privacy. He identified private messaging, short-lasting stories and small groups as the fastest-growing areas of online communication. In the last three years, the number of people using Facebook’s WhatsApp has almost doubled.

New Delhi : Delhi Capitals’ swashbuckling wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant was expected to be a back-up for MS Dhoni in the upcoming World Cup, but the youngster who has been left out for the more experienced Dinesh Karthik says that the former captain has been a massive influence on him. Pant will be part of the Delhi side that take on Chennai Super Kings on Wednesday evening, but mentor Dhoni’s availability is still under question as he is not well. “Mahi bhai is an important figure for me. Whenever I have a problem I share it with him. Whether it is an on-field thing or off the field matter I go to him,” Pant said. “But now against CSK he is an opponent so the concentration will be on defeating his side.” After 12 games in the competition, the

defending champions CSK are currently second only to the Delhi Capitals, who have qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2012. They are also the only sides to have secured qualification to the playoffs already. Delhi however will approach their penultimate league stage game with hope to keep the winning momentum in place according to Axar

Patel. “We aren’t specifically thinking about the opponent (CSK) because we are on a winning run right now, so our aim will be to give our 100% and hope we can win,” Axar said. Delhi have won their last three games on the bounce but will look to set their record against Chennai straight after losing to them in the national capital by 6 wickets.

AG. GNS_New Delhi : Gautam Gambhir was “mentally the most insecure” but that didn’t deter him from becoming one of India’s most successful batsmen, former mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton writes in his newly-released book, an assertion that the feisty ex-opener doesn’t even find hurtful. Gambhir, who is a now a politician and competing from the East Delhi constituency, told PTI that he is confident that there is “no sinful intention in Upton’s views as he is a nice man and in any case his insecurities are well documented”. In his book ‘The Barefoot Coach’, Upton discussed the myth of mental toughness of elite sportsperson and how they react to situations. “I did some of my best and least effective mental conditioning work with Gautam Gambhir, the International Test Cricketer of the Year’ in 2009. I worked with him up until that time but I had little to do with him

being named world’s best cricketer,” Upton writes in his book. Upton recalled how the left-handed opener would be in “agony” even after scoring a hundred and stressing more on the mistakes he might have made. Upton termed Gautam as someone who was wired towards the lower end of the optimism/pessimism scale if 100 stands for “uberoptimistic” and 0 stood for pessimistic. “Let’s say his range was 20 to 40 with 30 being normal. When he scored 150, he would be disappointed in not scoring 200.” Upton wrote that no

matter what he and then coach Gary Kirsten did Gambhir was “negative and pessimistic.” Upton then explained the contradiction and myth associated with mental toughness. “Using popular notion of mental toughness, he was one of the weakest and mentally most insecure’ people I have worked with. “But at the same time, he was undoubtedly one of the best and most determined and successful Test batsmen in the world. Something he would prove yet again in 2011 World Cup final.”

Earlier in the day, Ashwini Ponnappa-N Sikki Reddy also fought hard against Chinese pair Liu Xuanxuan-Xia Yuting but came up short 14-21, 23-21, 14-21 in an hour and 10 minutes. Saina Nehwal started the match on a backfoot with the Chinese taking a lead early

on. It has been a regular pattern in Saina’s matches recently when she starts slow. However, on Wednesday, the Indian could not catch up with her younger opponent as Zhiyi raced away to take the first game. The story did not change at all in the second game and Zhiyi changed gears from 7-7 to go into the break with an 11-9 lead. After the break, the Chinese piled on the pressure on Saina and won points while the Indian struggled to string a series of points together. However, with Zhiyi just a couple of points away from victory, Saina fought her infamous fighting spirit and won four straight points to make it 19-19. From there Saina saved a match point before taking the match into the decider.

Chakkadas to become past as manufacturer decides to stop its production

Rajkot : A Rajkot-based auto rickshaw manufacturing company Atul Auto Limited has decided to suspend the production of Chakkda, a three wheeler, popular in Saurasthra for commuting and transportation of goods. Atul Auto director, Niraj Chandra, said, “The new guidelines of government of India to curb the vehicular pollution are not as per the engine of Chakkda, the rules on road safety have also become more stringent which Chakkda can’t fulfil so we have decided to suspend production of this vehicle.” The Chakkdas became identity of the rural Saurashtra in 1980s and 1990s and it appeared in some of the Bollywood flicks too. When the public transportation, specially the state transport buses’

frequency was very poor in rural areas three decade ago, the Chakkdas were the only medium of commuting, some of the marriage procession also went in Chakkadas. The Chakkadas also served the purpose of light commercial vehicles as it’s widely used as mode of transportation of goods. Jagjivan Chandra floated the idea of manufacturing Chakkda in 1970 after he was gifted a

golf cart by the royal scion of Jamnagar, Jam Saheb. They first used the design of agricultural diesel pump to manufacture the engine. The manufacturer decided to stop the production but the Chakkdas won’t disappear immediately. According to Rajkot RTO, there are nearly 10,000 Chakkdas moving on the road in the district and no decision has been taken to take Chakkdas off the road.

Gujarat Maritime Board’s 500 crore push for LNG terminal at Mundra

Ahmedabad : The Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB), which regulates maritime activities in the state, has firmed up plans to invest Rs 500 crore in the proposed Rs 5,000 crore Mundra LNG terminal in Kutch. With this, the LNG terminal that was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September last year, is likely to be commissioned within next two months. The project being implemented by GSPC LNG Ltd, a unit of Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation Ltd (GSPC). GMB’s move follows Indian Oil Corporation’s (IOC) decision to drop its plan to invest in the project with proposed capacity to re-gasify 5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa). A senior official involved in the project said that decks have been cleared by state government for GMB to invest in the terminal. The Gujarat government owns 50% share in GSPC LNG

while 25% is owned by the billionaire Gautam Adani promoted Adani Group. “The authorized share capital for GSPC LNG is yet to be decided. GMB may pick up around 40% of the equity stake in the project for its Rs 500 crore investment,” said a state government official in the know of the development. The government has also held talks with the Adani Group to offer additional stake to them, however, things have not materialized so far, the official said. When contacted, an Adani Group official refused to comment on the matter. The present promoters, especially GSPC, will have to dilute its stake

to accommodate GMB as a third partner, the government official said. The government has been looking to induct a third partner in the project for many years now. The project commissioning has been facing delays as land lease and sub-concession agreements were not signed between the promoters and the Gujarat government. The terminal’s capacity can be expanded to 10 mtpa and is designed to have a berth for receiving LNG (liquified natural gas) tankers and storage tank facilities for re-gasification and gas evacuation. Indian Oil had earlier announced plans to pick up a 50% equity stake in the project for which it got an in-principle approval from its board in August 2017. IOCL, which has carried out due diligence of the project, informed Gujarat government last year that it had dropped its investment plans.
