Rahul will have full party support as president: Amarinder Singh

Rahul taking over as Cong president? A section in the party feels that Sonia should continue as party chief, while another feels that the earlier Rahul takes over the reins the better

Agency |Raebareli Agency | Mumbai

June 02, 2016, Thursday

Speculation on Wednesday raged about Rahul Gandhi taking over as Congress President soon but the party dismissed any such immediate possibility even as Sonia Gandhi remained tightlipped on the issue. Sonia, who is on a visit to her constituency Rae Bareli, was asked to comment on media reports about Congressmen wanting Rahul

to take over as President. She just got into her car without replying to the media. “We are a national party. There are certain procedures …When it comes to Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi we all wholeheartedly accept (their leadership)” …We all want Rahul to take over, as and when (it will happen), we will make a proper statement,” party spokesperson Sushmi-

ta Dev said. Replying to a volley of questions on the speculation over Rahul’s imminent elevation and also on the possibil-

ity of Priyanka Gandhi becoming active in Uttar Pradesh where Assembly polls are scheduled next year, Dev said :” specu-

lation is the privilege of the media”. In Chandigarh, Punjab Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh said time is right for Rahul Gandhi to take over from his mother as Congress President and favoured Priyanka’s entry into active politics. “Sonia Gandhi is a brilliant leader. I have said that she has been working (as Congress President) for the last 20 years. If she feels that time has come to give it to a new gen-

eration, then she should pass it on and we will fully support Rahul (to take over),” he told a press conference. A section in the party feels that Sonia should continue as party chief, while another feels that the earlier Rahul takes over the reins the better. Leaders like Jairam Ramesh have said earlier that Rahul will be party president in 2016. Talk is that a meeting of the Congress Working Committee will be held this

month to discuss threadbare the situation caused by the party’s debacle in Assembly elections in four states. Holding of a ‘Chintan Shivir’ to brainstorm over the losses, among other things, is also being talked about. Rahul was made party vice president in January 2013 at the Jaipur chintan shivir. Sonia Gandhi has been at the helm of the party since March 1998 and has created a record of sorts.

2 / Dt. 02-06-2016, Thursday Editors’ Picks thursday, june 02, 2016 Eknath Khadse accused in land deal, Is the BJP not a corrupt party? At a function last week to mark two years of his government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about the changes ushered in since the NDA came to power in May 2014 through good governance while promising to root out corruption. But the controversy involving a senior minister of the BJP in one of the largest states where the party is in power threatens to take some sheen off this claim. The case involves purchase of a three-acre plot near Pune by Maharashtra Revenue Minister Eknath Khadse’s wife, Mandakini, and son-in-law, Girish Chaudhari, on April 27 this year for Rs 3.75 crore. The charge the minister is facing is that even while a case was pending in the high court, the land was sold to Khadse’s family and that the minister himself had held a meeting with officials of the state agency, the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation, and from his own department, on the compensation to be given to the original owner under the state Land Acquisition Act in the third week of March, weeks before the transaction, as a report in the English daily Newspaper has revealed. Shockingly, Khadse has admitted to having convened the meeting while going on to defend himself saying that as long as the deal was legally sound, he and his family members were within their rights as private citizens to purchase the land. But the minister has erred, and gravely at that, in participating in a matter which has a material impact on his family’s interests — a clear conflict of interest. In most countries, this would have invited penalties and led to a course correction. Khadse is brazening it out but surely this should attract action from his party beyond just a rebuke. Indeed, he should be asked to quit. That’s because the minister, who is already facing multiple charges, did not even recuse himself or make his interests public in the interests of transparency — a virtue his party has been highlighting as an achievement in its two years in office. This comes on top of earlier cases of conflict of interest involving at least six ministers in the Maharashtra government — three of whom were forced to quit their positions on the boards of private firms after a report published in this newspaper in March this year. The callous attitude on conflict of interest issues featuring politicians, civil servants and corporate India is worrying. India currently has a model code of conduct which says that any minister within two months of assuming office should sever all connection with the conduct and management of any business in which he previously had an interest.

nament for women for the Games. The 33-yearold was required to make at least the semifinals to be assured of an Olympic berth in the mega-event in Astana, Kazakhstan. “She has been a phenomenal athlete and looking at her overall contribution to the sport, we have decided to request for a wildcard for her. However, her application will be among the many that the International Boxing Association (AIBA) will examine before taking a

final decision,” Chairman of the ad-hoc committee currently running boxing in India, Kishen Narsi, told agency. Mary Kom, who is called ‘Magnificent Mary’ by AIBA, is a five-time world champion besides being a bronze-medallist from the London Olympics. The multiple-time Asian champion could not get an Olympic quota place in either of the two qualifying events for women boxers and is keeping her fingers crossed for a wildcard.

Former England captain Ian Botham has said that the current Three Lions skipper Alastair Cook has enough time at his disposal to challenge Sachin Tendulkar’s record. On Monday, Cook became the youngest to join the 10, 000 runs club in the nine-wicket win against Sri Lanka at Chester-le-Street. Cook needed five runs in the England’s second innings to reach to milestone. While he is nowhere near Tendulkar’s alltime mark of 15921 runs, Botham thought Cook was the man to chase the mammoth record. “I

think he’s got a lot more runs to come yet, this is just a milestone for him. He’s 31; he’s got lots of time to go. In five years, he could be chasing Sachin. Who knows?” he told Sky Sports. “He is fit enough, strong enough, and we know how mentally tough he is. He could play for five or six more years easily. It’s down to him. It’s

how long he wants to play for,” Botham said. The former great may have a case. Tendulkar breached the 10,000 run barrier when he was 31 years and 10 months old. Cook made it to the prestigious club at the age of 31 years, 5 months. But Tendulkar needed 122 Tests to achieve the landmark, while the England captain took 128 matches.

Mystery surrounds the sudden departure of Pakistan’s banned Test leg-spinner, Danish Kaneria and his family to India although his brother claims they have gone to perform some religious rituals. Kaneria, his wife, children and his mother flew out to India on Sunday night and are presently said to be in Kochi but speculations are rampant

that the banned player might have gone to India to seek a livelihood and settle down there. “My family is in India to perform some religious rituals which will take around 10-days. Our return dates are not confirmed as yet,” Kaneria told a television channel from India. His brother, Vicky Kaneria, who is in Karachi and employed with an oil campany also insisted it was a personal trip for religious

purposes. But he was unwilling to speak further on the issue. Speculations have been rife over the real purpose of the visit to India as Danish Kaneria had earlier this year reportedly said he would have got more justice in India being a Hindu by faith. Fed up with the non-cooperation of the Pakistan Cricket Board, Danish had caused an uproar in Pakistani cricket circles when he said that if he had not been a Hindu his case would have been handled differently by the cricket board. The leg-spinner was also disappointed when he got no response to a letter he wrote to Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif in early April about his case.

Reliance Foundation builds Gafa dam in Gujarat; income of farmers trebles Correspondent | Rajkot

Gafa dam on Ghelo River near Jasdan, western Gujarat, has allowed farmers to grow crops round-theyear and increase their earnings. The income of about 158 households have nearly tripled after a dam on the Ghelo river near Jasdan, Rajkot district, helped irrigate over 221 ha of land. Reliance Foundation facilitated the construction of the Gafa dam near Jasdan town, Rajkot district, in 2014. With a total water harvesting capacity of more than 5.5 lakh cubic metres of water, the dam ensures availability of water round the year available to irrigate 64 ha of land, thus benefitting 158 farmers who, on an average, own 1 acre* of land each. The availability of water from

the dam has made a significant difference to the lives of the poor farmers and their families in the nearby villages of Sompipliya [population 2462/households 434] and Fuljhar [population 2471/households 428]. The impact of the dam can be gauged from the fact that even though Jasdan received just half its average rainfall last year, crop production increased

by 60%. The availability of water throughout the year enabled the farmers to now grow Rabi and Zaid crops, in addition to the regular Kharif crops, thus increasing their annual farm income from Rs 54,000 to Rs 1,50,000. The dam has also facilitated non-agricultural livelihood activities including animal husbandry. Water in the dam serves a source of drinking water for the

wildlife in the adjoining Hingorgarh sanctuary, even when there was a drought. The variety of flora has increased ever since the Gafa dam came up. An existing dam on the Gafa Stream (Ghelo river), constructed years ago by the state Forest Department, had broken down 10 years ago. The villagers lacked the resources and the knowledge to reconstruct the

dam. In 2013, Reliance Foundation set up a Village Association (VA) in Fuljar village. The VA members agreed decided to reconstruct the Gafa dam. Reliance Foundation facilitated the construction by obtaining the necessary clearances from the Forest Department. An 11-member committee monitored the construction of the dam, which was completed within three months.

Rupala set to get elected High Court set to rule on deadly unopposed for Rajya Sabha 2002 Gujarat riots tomorrow

As Congress party refused to field its candidate, BJP candidate Parshottam Rupala is all set to be declared victorius in Rajya Sabha seat bypoll today. The last date of making nominations was 31st May. Other than Rupala, the other nomination was filed only by BJP leader K.C. Patel as dummy candidate. Rupala’s form will go under scrutiny today. The last date

of withdrawal of candidature is 3rd June, but K.C. Patel will withdraw the nomination before that and thus Rupala will be declared victorious unopposed. This will be Rupala’s second entry to Rajya Sabha. Many BJP leaders believe he can be made union minister by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with whom Rupala enjoys good terms. Years ago, it was Modi’s decision to send Rupala to Rajya Sabha replacing

Keshubhai Patel. Rupala was made state BJP president when Modi was Chief Minister. Again it was believed that this was Modi’s decision. Rupala has been unsuccessful in winning elections in his base Amreli district of Saurashtra region. There are not great chances that he can win Amreli again, mainly due to the fact that he belongs to Kadva Patel community and his former constituency is Leuva Patel dominated. Rupala therefore shifted to organizational side in previous decade with entry in Rajya Sabha. Rupala is considered good orator who can attract people to campaign meetings. In fact this is his biggest plus point over other leaders. His impression is macho and bold. Sometime he is considered arrogant due to his this style. His sense of humor is considered best in Gujarat politics after Vajubhai Vala. Unlike most BJP leaders Rupala can connect very well to literature and folk music artists and events. In fact he was once seen singing a song in Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation event at Tagore hall on request of others.
