Kerala HC reduces ex-priest’s prison sentence to 10 years The Kerala High Court on Wednesday reduced the quantum of sentence awarded to former Catholic priest Robin Vadakkuncheril who is undergoing 20 years of rigorous imprisonment in a sensational case pertaining to raping and impregnating a minor Catholic girl in 2016. Considering the review petition of the former priest, a bench of Justice Narayana Pisharadi reduced the term of rigorous imprisonment from 20 years to ten years. SUNVILLA SAMACHAR Omicron: After-Effect May Be More Virulent Than Infection
Waves of new variants of the old accursed pandemic is bad news for the health of the planet. On top, the economic disruptions that these have been creating is a double whammy. The only silver lining is that people learn fast to tackle new situations, however difficult these are As a South African doctor conclusively proved the infection by a still more infectious variant of the old covid-19 virus, it sent a shiver down the spines. Some European countries are doing so, amidst already spiking covid infection rates. China, the country which had let loose this horrible plight on the world, has been pursuing its crude policy of zero-tolerance to covid infection. Brazil has been another weak spot, with large incidence of infection, omicron or no omicron. The doctors are already saying that although the virus mutant is far more infectious than the earlier Delta one, it has so far proved to be less fatal. The symptoms of the omicron variety are much milder and do not immediately require hospitalisation. However, this still called for medical attention and treatment, particularly to isolate and spot its spread. And there lies the cache. If controlling the spread of the omicron variety of covid needs still more vicious isolation and lock down, then this is surely going to affect the global economic recovery now under way. The IMF had forecast comfortable economic recovery before the news of the omicron spread. Now, after its emergence and rapid spread, these would have to be reviewed. Already, global financial markets have reacted to the news of the new variant and its typical nature. Markets have fallen sharply and these are still waiting for further details. As more and more news appear about the omicron variety, the financial markets would surely react. By itself, this will leave dents on countries, depending on their other strengths or weaknesses. This is not unknown. Immediately after the global financial melt-down in 2008 and subsequent disruptions, the economies had gone into a tail spin. As the US economic authorities had responded to the evolving scenario, these further left collateral damages. Recall what had happened on the news of tapering of bond purchases by the US Federal Reserve which had buoyed up the sentiments on the financial markets and kept the interest rates low. News of the Fed cutting down bond purchases drove their yield up and financial flows to the emerging market economies plummeted. The exchange rates of most of the countries nosedived and they had faced a new crisis. Based on the impact of the US tapering, the larger emerging market economies had immediate turned into a new grade —the Frail Five— which experienced sharp drop in their exchange rates, domestic financial uncertainties and the fresh dip in economic activity. A kind of financial market instability following severe omicron spread and fresh lock-downs could once again give rise to uncertainties. This would of course depend on their current economic strength. However, it is possible to anticipate that those already facing high inflation (and some are), having smaller kitty of foreign exchange reserves, exposure to short-term loans and dependence on exports to China or US, will face possible inflection points. The risks of public health and hygiene apart, the downside risks now emerge from what two major economic powers would be doing. Both China and the United States are the engines of the global economy and their domestic economic policies will influence what happens to others. There are two principal threats now. The Bombay high court on Wednesday granted bail to activist Sudha Bharadwaj while rejecting default bail pleas of her eight co-accused arrested in connection with alleged inflammatory speeches at the December 2017 Elgar Parishad conclave in Pune. It directed her to approach a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court on December 6 for deciding her
release and bail conditions. The high court rejected NIA’s request for a stay on the operation of Bharadwaj’s bail for two weeks. Bharadwaj was among over a dozen activists and academics arrested in connection with the conclave that was held a day before the violence at Bhima Koregaon near Pune. The Pune Police claimed people linked to Maoists backed the conclave. The NIA later took over the probe into the case.

Petrol price cut by ₹ 8 per litre in Delhi, diesel price unchanged Agency News: New Delhi The Delhi government on Wednesday decided to reduce the VAT on petrol, bringing down the price of the fuel in the city by about Rs 8 per litre, official sources said. However, price of diesel will remain unchanged in the capital city. At a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, it was decided that the ValueAdded Tax (VAT) on petrol will be reduced from the present 30 percent to 19.4 percent, leading to a cut of around Rs 8 per litre, they added. AMC relieves contractual workers roped in for Covid-19 duty; staffers protest Sunvilla News: Ahmedabad Temporary health workers, who were roped in by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) last year for Covid-19 duty, began protests outside the Aarogya Bhavan on Wednesday after they were relieved of their duty. Nearly 1,100 temporary health workers and other staffers were relieved by way of a notice on Tuesday evening The notice by AMC stated that in light of the reduced burden of Covid-19 cases at present, temporary medical, paramedical and class-4 staff be relieved. In its notice, the AMC stated that pursuant to the Gujarat National Health Mission director’s communication, ‘doctor mitra’, temporarily appointed part-time medical and paramedical staff at urban health
centres, laboratory technicians, pharmacists will be relieved after completion of office hours on November 30. Nearly 200 temporary contractual workers protested at Aarogya Bhavan. Kaushal Maheriya (26) claimed that the AMC verbally renewed their contracts every three months and the notice relieving them came out of the blue via WhatsApp message. “It is all of our demand that we not be relieved,” said Maheriya, who is designated as a multi-purpose health worker and initially roped in by AMC in April 2020. Ravindra Sorathiya (34), who was assisting doctors as well as making entries of Covid-19 related data said: “We were paid Rs 10,000 per month and the AMC has vacancies for health staffers. Father, son drown in Narmada canal A father-son drowned in Narmada canal near Sughad area of Gandhinagar on Monday night. According to police, the deceased have been identified as Dashrathji Thakor (40) and his younger son Prem Thakor (13), residents of Sughad village in Gandhinagar. According to police Monday afternoon Prem Thakor had allegedly jumped into the Narmada canal in a suicide bid. His father then jumped into the canal to look for his son and also drowned, said the police. “Prem Thakor had a fight in his family on Monday afternoon and in a fit of rage, he jumped into the Narmada canal that goes through his village. Later, after his son went missing, Dashrathji Thakor also jumped into the canal to look for him however he also drowned.
