Forming Of A Federal Front Of Regional Parties Without Congress May Not Work

Will too many cooks spoil the Opposition broth? Many players in the national oppositioncamp are trying to come together ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls against the BJP. Youhave Congress President Sonia Gandhi attempting to form a united opposition coalition. You have West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee trying to develop a non- Congress non-BJP coalition with the help of Nationalist Congress Party leader Sharad Pawar. Then youhave the Telangana chief minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao who wants to form a federal frontwithout Congress. Tamil Nadu chief minister M.K. Stalin is the new entrant to this effort.Talk of a federal front of regional parties without Congress to take on the BJP in 2024elections has gained ground in the last few weeks. By leading a national party, Congressgets the prime place to unite the Opposition. Without Congress, however weak it is today, any opposition front will not succeed. Sonia Gandhi held a meeting last August of 19 politicalparties but did not take it further. She then appealed to the Opposition to come together, focusing on defeating the BJP in 2024. Lok Sabha polls. Congress party is waiting for thecurrent five state Assembly election results on March 10 to take further steps. Therefore there is an inherent contradiction in the splintered opposition camp—regionalsatraps, with a stronghold on their respective fiefdoms, dream of succeeding Narebdra Modi. The precedents of Deve Gowda, I. K. Gujral and Chandrasekhar give them this hope.If it retains Punjab, succeeds in Goa, and snatches Uttarakhand in the current Assemblypolls, the Congress party has a chance of uniting the Opposition. In 2017, though Congressemerged as the single largest party in Goa and Manipur, the BJP formed the government inboth states, luring defections. Moreover, while opposition leaders like Sharad Pawar,Mamata Banerjee, and others might agree to work under Sonia Gandhi, they do not acceptRahul Gandhi as their leader.Mamata proposes calling a non-BJP chief ministerconference in Delhi, where KCR, TamilNadu chief minister M K Stalin, Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray, will participate in theemerging federal Front. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin& recent statement that aconvention of non-NDA CMs will be organized in Delhi confirms it. Efforts are on to mobilise as many non-BJP CMs as possible, including BJD, YSR Congress, and the CPI(M) ledgovernment in Kerala.. The CPI-M mouthpiece People democracy said in its latesteditorial, "Talk of a federal front by Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao orMamata Banerjee's attempt to project herself as heading an alternative alliance are politicalmatters, which should not be mixed up with the task of bringing all chief ministers of non-BJPstate governments togetherThe second reason is the souring of Centre-state relations on various issues — fromexpanding role of investigative agencies to GST, IAS cadre rules, and sharing of PDS data.CMs of West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Kerala, etc., have also been complainingthat their respective governors are infringing on the rights of the elected government.Mamata Banerjee claims they try to "protect the countrfederal structure from gettingbulldozed.Thirdly, some regional leaders like Mamata Banerjee, K. Chandrasekhar Rao, and ArvindKejriwal have won the state continuously in the past decade. These politically strong stateleaders believe that the time for moving to the Centre has come now. In other words, regionalism is raising its head.India had seen such an alternate Front before. This coalition included the Janata Party in1977, the National Front in 1989, United Front in 1996 but all of them had a brief rule.National parties like The National Front (supported by BJP) and the United Front (supportedby Congress) came later. There are two problems for these alternate fronts to survive. The first is that they lackprogrammatic coherence, and the second is who will lead this Front. There are pros and cons of such a ragtag coalition of regional parties. As former primeminister Atal Behari Vajpayee and also Dr. Manmohan Singh experienced, they keep thecoalition leader under check. Like Telugu Desam chief Chandrababu Naidu, they couldbargain funds for their respective states or, like Jayalalithaa, demand cabinet berths of theirchoice. But all these are at the cost of a stable government. Except for UPA and NDA, othercoalition governments did not last long.Indeed, the contours of the federal Front are likely to emerge after March 10, when theresults of five assembly elections are out. Whether Congress has a role in this Front - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara will depend on how it performs.

Senior India player Harmanpreet Kaur, who has battled a prolonged rough patch, feels her 171 against Australia in the 2017 World Cup overshadowed her many “crucial” knocks of 30 and 40, which followed that “benchmarksetting” innings. Two days before the ODI World Cup begins in New Zealand, the vice-captain added that critics often forget her low-scoring but important knocks because of one standout performance.“I know people talk more about my 171-knock and that is a

standard I have set for myself, maybe that’s why my small knocks of 30-40 runs, which are crucial to the team, are not given importance,” Kaur said during a virtual press conference on Wednesday. “I don’t want to judge myself through numbers – what matters to me is that when the team needs me, I can stand up for them be it by scoring 100 runs or 10 runs.” The 32-year-old had been struggling with the willow but roared back to form in time for the World Cup, beginning on Friday. Kaur scored a total of 33 runs in the first three matches against New Zealand before being dropped.

Bankers advising Indian state-run Life Insurance Corp (LIC) on its IPO have pushed the government to defer the launch of the stock offering in the wake of the market jolt caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, two sources familiar with the talks told Reuters. In what will be the biggest stock offering in India, the government has plans to raise about $8 billion by selling 5% of LIC’s stake this month before the fiscal year ends on March 31. The offering is also seen critical as it will help New

Delhi raise funds for budgeted spending. But two bankers familiar with discussions said the investment banks on the deal were piling pressure on the government and raised concerns in a recent closeddoor meeting to delay the IPO by saying market conditions

were no more conducive due to volatility caused by RussiaUkraine tensions If the IPO is delayed, it will add to the growing list of planned offerings being put on hold as the war dampens investor appetite for risky assets. The bankers have told the Indian government that launching LIC’s stock offering would make sense in the coming months when investors are more confident, said one of the bankers, who is directly involved in the negotiations.“We have communicated our concerns... it is likely that a decision on (revised) IPO timing can come by this week,” said the banker.
