Case against Giriraj Singh for racist remark Sonia says won’t comment on people with narrow mindset, Bihar court orders FIR against Giriraj Singh Agency : New Delhi A Bihar court on Thursday ordered police to file an FIR against Union Minister Giriraj Singh for his controversial remarks on Sonia Gandhi who ignored the racist comment saying she won't respond to people with "narrow mindset". The Congress also took to streets stepping up its demand for sacking of Singh staging protests in Delhi and also in Bengaluru where BJP leaders have gathered for its National Executive meet. The BJP on its part sought to bring closure to the raging controversy, saying it considers the matter closed as the minister has expressed his regret. As the outrage against Singh continued after he kicked up a row with his remarks asking whether Congress

would have accepted Sonia's leadership had she not been white-skinned, Singh came under attack even from BJP ally and Union Minister Upendra Kushwaha. "It does not behove a union minister to speak in such a language...it's objectionable remark," Kushwaha, President Rashtriya Lok

Samata Party (RLSP), an ally of BJP, told reporters in Patna. When newsmen sought her reaction, Sonia said she would not like to respond to people with "narrow mindset". "I feel it is not worth responding to persons having such a narrow mindset," Gandhi told reporters in Neemuch in

More Than 70 Dead in Al-Shabab Attack in Kenya Agency : NAIROBI Kenyan Interior Minister Joseph Nkaissery says that more than 70 people have been killed in an attack by Somali-based Islamic extremists on a college in northeast Kenya. Rajan 'perfect'; RBI, government think on similar lines: PM Modi Agency : Mumbai Amid a widespread perception about differences between RBI and the government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday praised Governor Raghuram Rajan for being "perfect" in explaining to him complex economic issues and said there was similarity in thinking on both the sides. Stating that Rajan would explain implications of RBI's policies in "just threefour slides", Modi also said that he must have been a very good 'teacher' in the past. Rajan, who has been Professor of Finance at University of Chicago and joined RBI as its Governor in September 2013, said on

his part that there has always been a "constructive dialogue" between RBI and the government. There have been talks from time to time about differences between the central bank and the government on a range of issues including on inflation and interest rates. While the government and RBI have always maintained that there were 'no differences' between them, some proposals in this year's

Budget indicated shifting certain functions out of the central bank's ambit including on the public debt management. Speaking at a function to mark 80 years of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Modi expressed satisfaction over the role played by the central bank under Rajan. "There is lot of similarity between the thinking of the RBI and government... This is absolutely essential.

Delhi to Get Full Wifi Coverage in 2 Years, Says Government Agency : NEW DELHI Delhi will get full wifi coverage in two years and around 700 wifi hotspots will be set up by February 2016, state government's Parliamentary Secretary to Minister of IT, Adarsh Shastri said Thursday. "We will get budgetary allocation in June and issue tender for wifi by July. First phase comprising 600-700 wifi hotspots will be rolled by February 2016. Wifi coverage in entire Delhi shall be done in 2 years," Mr Shastri said while speaking at an event organised by a news portal. The rulingAamAadmi Party had promised free wifi service in Delhi during its election campaigning. Speaking at the event, industry players, however, questioned the business model adopted by the Delhi government for the sustainability of wifi operations in the state. Mr Shastri said that the Delhi government has various programmes that need Internet connectivity, for which the state government will pay. Besides, there are a number of sites of Delhi government where telecom companies can install their equipment and in lieu provide free access to public. "If these sites are given out for advertisements, it will fetch government revenue of Rs. 20 crore per month. At any given point you can have 4 million smartphones connected to

wifi. This can bring huge revenue model for companies. I have nowhere seen such big scale as in Delhi," Shastri said. He added that by bringing various services online and giving people opportunity to access them will reduce efficiency as well as curb corruption. "In terms of revenue, sky is the limit. Give them free wifi till the time it (browsing by public) is limited to basic services such as e-mail, government websites. If he wants to watch movie, download movie, make him pay," Mr Shastri said.

The complainant, a resident of Miscote colony of Muzaffarpur, said in the petition that after reading a news report about the racist remark on Sonia he was pained. The Youth Congress staged a protest outside a residential complex in Delhi where Singh lives while another demonstration was staged by the Delhi Mahila Congress outside BJP's

headquarters at 11, Ashoka Road. Condemning the remarks of Singh on Sonia, senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh said the Congress demands not only a public apology from the Minister but also seeks his dismissal from the Cabinet. In Bengaluru, Congress and NSUI workers assembled at a major junction, about one km away from a hotel where top BJP leaders have gathered for the party's twoday National Executive meeting beginning Friday. hey shouted slogans against Singh and burnt his effigy. "Giriraj Singh has clarified his position. The matter has ended and should not be made an issue by our opponents. Farmer in Amreli develops variety of wheat that gives double production Sunvilla News, Amreli

A progressive farmer from Paniya village of Amreli district in Gujarat has developed a new variety of wheat which gives double production compared to existing popular Lok Van variety. According to farmer Jayantibhai Desai, three years ago he observed in his farm that certain plants were having greater development in terms of size and produce. He separated those plants from others and sow 2.5 kg seeds from which he could obtain 9600 kg wheat. According to Desai, one wheat after plantation

offered 2,000 number of wheat. Jayantibhai sent this seed to Junagadh based Agriculture University and got his seed recognized. Jayantibhai Patel has named this variety of seed as JP 101. Jayantibhai said that while commonly the size of ‘dundi’ of wheat plant is 4.5 inch long containing 40-45 wheat, the new variety has the size of 8-9 inch containing 80-120 wheat. Each plant has such 21 ‘dundi’. Compared to Bansi or Lok Van, the new variety needs half the number of seeds while production is doubled.

Air India pilots’ body writes to DGCA about ‘stressed’ junior pilots in cockpit Agency : Mumbai An Air India pilots’ body has urged DGCA to look into the issue of deployment of a section of its “stressed” junior pilots in the cockpit, days after the Germanwings pane crash. Stating that some 30-odd co-pilots were being “forced to work overtime” without any remuneration, the Indian Commercial Pilots Association (ICPA), in a letter to the aviation regulator Thursday alleged that “putting these highly-stressed and financially over-burdened copilots in the same cockpit… is a perfect recipe for disaster.” ICPA represents the narrow-body Airbus

A320 pilots in the airline. This is the second time in the last 10 days that ICPA has redflagged safety concerns inAir India to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Earlier, it had asked DGCAto ground the airline’s 26-year -old A-320 fleet citing safety concerns. The fresh communication to the regulator comes following the action of Andreas Lubitz, copilot of the Germanwings flight who last week crashed the

Airbus A320 plane into the French Alps killing himself and 149 others. Reports thereafter have said that 27year-old Lubitz was suffering from depression but had hidden this from his airline, which is a subsidiary of Lufthansa. The incident has triggered a debate over pilots’ mental health in India as well. ICPA said that these junior pilots were inducted into Air India from Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Academy on the terms of permanent employment, but the management later decided to unilaterally change the terms of employment to one-off contract.

Delhi is dangerously polluted? Most of us Indians think we are top dogs and cool cats. But we are instead like an experimental frog in water, on gradual boil to death. According to a 19th century experiment, when a frog is put in boiling water, it quickly jumps out to save its life. But when it is put in cold water that is heated gradually, it boils to death. The toxic air around us is unbreathable; the polluted underground water is undrinkable; potable water is disappearing fast; food items are laced with fertilizers; chicken and other bird meat has high levels of antibiotics; vegetables have Ecoli and other bacteria; milk has synthetic material and oxytocin; and the noise around us is of such high-decibel that it is freaking us out, frying our brain. The environment around us is closing in on us like slow-boiling water. But we are not even thinking of jumping out of the cauldron. Like the frog, most of us are not aware of the danger. And those who know, simply do not care. In our blind apathy and ignorance, we are not just on slow poison; we are also concocting deadlier and higher doses of toxins for the future generations, including the children, on whose ‘better’ future we, ironically, spend so much time, money and effort. It is all going horribly wrong. For the past two days, the Indian Express has been writing about the alarming level of pollutants in the Delhi air, telling us about the impending death by breath. It says Delhi is the world’s most-polluted city, the respirable particulate matter in the air is 17 times the permissible level and the number of patients with asthma, wheezing and other chronic ailments has increased three-fold in seven years. Medical experts the newspaper spoke to have just one advice for people with chronic respiratory ailments: just leave Delhi. Another report in the Times of India reveals around 40 percent of samples of chicken in Delhi and NCR had high levels of antibiotic content; their consumption is making people resistant to drugs. India consumes around 2100 tonne of chicken every year and its consumption is expected to touch 4000 tonne in 2030, the highest in the world. Monitoring of water in most Indian rivers has shown high levels of pollution. A report in 2008, found the bio oxygen demand (BOD) in Yamuna canal (247), river Yamuna at the Delhi (70) and river Betwa (58). A water sample with a 5 day BOD greater than 20 mg O/L indicates ecologically-unsafe polluted water. Even the Ganga has turned into a gutter. A few years ago, Sankatmochan Foundation, a Varanasi-based NGO, assessed the quality of water around the popular ghats. Some of the samples had a fecal coliform count of 62,000 to 2.7 million per 100 ml. And a biochemical oxygen demand of 20-50mg per litre. The permissible level of fecal count for bathing is just 500 per ml. And the oxygen demand (higher the pollution greater is the amount of oxygen required to clean it) should be less than 3 mg per litre. In 1951, the use of fertilizers in agriculture was less than a metric tonne. It is now well over 25 metric tonne. For years environmentalists and experts have been warning against the high levels of chemicals like nitrogen in food and underground water. Nitrogen fertilizer use and production account for six per cent of our total greenhouse emissions.

their projects in a way that they have two-three releases in a year. “The planning hasn’t happened yet. I am just going with the flow. Rati Agnihotri opens up Kalki: Never Keep Commerce about her abusive marriage

Agency : Mumbai The living room of Rati Agnihotri's Worli penthouse tastefully furnished with Christian iconography and overlooking the Arabian Sea, is marked by quiet and a sense of calm. But as the reigning star of the 80s recounts in vivid detail the

turbulent years of her marriage to architect Anil Virwani, you realise how deceptive the calm is. For, this room and this house is where the actress has suffered horrific domestic abuse. Rati, star of hit films like Ek Duje Ke Liye, Coolie and Tawaif, was at the top of her game when

she met Virwani. After a swift courtship, the two were married in 1985 and Rati quit the movie business to become a homemaker and mother. Instances of her husband losing his cool and hitting her began in the initial years of the marriage and progressively became more frequent over 30 years. Each of those instances of beating that had her running around this penthouse like a terrified animal, trying to escape her husband's blows, is etched in her mind.

in Mind While Doing a Film

Agency : Mumbai The economics of filmmaking may have assumed a greater

importance in the Bollywood in recent times, but actress Kalki Koechlin, who will next be seen in

Margarita, With a Straw, says she neither thinks of commerce, nor about the audience while doing a movie. I believe in my script, and work hard. I don't think this film is for the Mumbai audience or festival audience. If that's the case, then you (an actor) will fail. "I work from my heart. I love intelligent cinema and it should grip me," she added. Directed by Shonali Bose, Margarita, With a Straw will hit theatres on April 17.

Maruti Suzuki eyes another strong year after record sales in FY 2015

NEW DELHI Buoyed by highest ever sales in a fiscal, country's largest car maker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) is confident of tightening its grip on the automobile market with continued focus on sales and service network expansion and new product introductions. The company had posted total sales of 12,92,415 units in 2014-15, its highest annual sales beating previous best in 2010-11 when it had sold 12,71,005 units. Its domestic sales of 11,70,702 units in 2014-15 was also its highest ever, better than its previous best of 11,32,700 units sold in 2010-11. "Last fiscal was

definitely a challenging one. When the overall industry grew by about 4 per cent we grew 11 per cent. We were able to do this as we had focused on key areas of sales and service network expansion besides new products," MSI Executive Director, Marketing & Sales, RS Kalsi. Expressing confidence of doing better than industry growth in the current fiscal, he said the company would continue with activities to get closer to consumers. The expectation in the auto industry is that in 2015-16, car sales could grow around 6-8 per cent, although industry body SIAM hasn't officially given any forecast.

IBM forges mobile app partnership with China Telecom Corp Ltd Agency : BEIJING International Business Machines (IBM) has struck a deal with China Telecom Corp Ltd to offer and manage corporate-grade mobile apps, the latest in a string of tie-ups with Chinese firms. Under the agreement, state-owned China Telecom will host on its servers IBM's MobileFirst service, which helps corporations manage apps for Apple Inc's iPhone and iPad devices. The two companies have not yet disclosed any customers but will seek out everything from large, state-owned enterprises in sectors like banking and insurance to private startups, Nancy Thomas, a Beijing-based managing partner of global business services, said in a telephone interview. IBM's

strategy has been to deepen its presence and win favour in China through partnerships with local firms despite political headwinds. Citing cybersecurity concerns, the Chinese government recently announced regulations that encourage state-affiliated companies to procure more tech products from domestic suppliers and shun international vendors. Western business lobbies say this is an unfair tactic to protect Chinese companies or spur technology transfer. IBM Chief Executive Virginia Rometty said in a speech before business and political elite in Beijing last week that the company would share its technology and help Chinese companies to continue doing business in the country.

"We have no intention of getting into the soccer sphere, and have not made any contact with AC Milan," Zong said on his official Sina Weibo microblog account on Thursday. Reuters could not

Take a little trip down memory lane because on this day, exactly four years ago in 2011, the Men in Blue won the coveted cricket World Cup, India's second win and this time, on home ground. At the helm of this

huge victory were Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh, who was named Man of the Tournament. Here's reliving that golden moment back in 2011. This post shared on Yuvraj Singh's official Facebook account has not surprisingly, been liked by over 2.2 lakh people. It was soon after that exhilarating, historic win that Yuvraj was

diagnosed with cancer. He took a hiatus from the field, sought treatment in the US, and returned to the pitch. Despite an incredible return to international cricket in 2012, however, the southpaw did not find a place in this year's World Cup squad, leaving Indian fans lamenting their 2011 World Cup hero's exclusion from the team.

IPL 8: Michael Hussey unsure of Chennai Super Kings role Agency : Chennai Michael Hussey is happy to be back at the Chennai Super Kings and the 39year-old Australian is open to performing any role for the two-time IPL champions in the upcoming edition. "I have not really thought about it (his role) too much. I need to sit down and have a chat with MS (captain Dhoni) and Stephen Fleming (coach) about what role they want me to play. At this age I just want to play whatever role that I can help the team, whether at the top or middle or helping the young guys on the field," said Hussey on his arrival here today for the IPL beginning April 8. "pre-arranged". The claim drew a sharp rebuke from ICC chief executive David Richardson and Kamal later complained that he had been deprived of his "right" as ICC president to present the trophy to the winners, Australia, in Melbourne last Sunday. Instead that honour went to India's Narayanaswami Srinivasan, who took over as ICC chairman last year and who was booed at the ceremony. "I resign right at this moment. I am no longer ICC president," Kamal told reporters at the airport in Dhaka, where he arrived on Wednesday from Singapore. "The main reason for my resignation is that I can't

work with those who can act unconstitutionally and unlawfully." The ICC confirmed that Kamal had resigned in a letter to the organisation but said the outgoing president had cited "personal" reasons and had not made any complaint against any individual. Kamal's position has been largely ceremonial since Srinivasan took office as ICC chairman last year. On Wednesday he launched an extraordinary attack on the Indian national, calling him "rotten" and "controversial" and suggesting the ICC could stand for "Indian Cricket Council". "I feel bad even to mention his name," he said. "If that man is in charge of cricket, how will cricket run?" Srinivasan was forced to quit as head of India's cricket board over a corruption inquiry involving his son-in-law. He said he had been told he would only be allowed to present the trophy if he withdrew his claim of bias.

ESPN was among the US media outlets reporting on Wednesday that the Kings, owned by Indian software magnate Vivek Ranadive, expect to

There should not be any observation while deciding Kodnani’s appeal: SIT

Shapath V – The tallest building in Ahmedabad, but height is not its only unique feature Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

The SC-appointed SIT Wednesday told the Gujarat HC that if it takes a decision on the appeal of former minister Maya Kodnani, challenging the order of trial court that sentenced her to life imprisonment first, before other similar petitions, it should not make any observations as it may be taken as a precedent in other connected matters. SIT counsel Prashant Desai told this orally before the division bench, headed by justice Ravi R Tripathi. The question of deciding Kodnani’s petition first before hearing other connected appeals arose after her lawyer, senior

counsel Nirupam Nanavati, finished his arguments. “Normally in appeals where there are connected matters, having common evidence, are heard together. However, as far as deciding Kodnani’s case first is concerned, the lordship should not make any observation,” Desai said. Following this, Justice Tripathi said, “We will do so.” Desai also said that appeals have been filed by all the 30 other convicts, including Bajrang Dal leader Babu Bajrangi and there are other appeals such as enhancement of sentence and appeal against five persons who were acquitted by the trial court.

Wrong classification of forest land caused Rs 58.64 cr benefit to Adani company: CAG report

Sunvilla News, Gandhinagar

The Comptroller & Auditor General of India (CAG), in its report tabled in Gujarat Assembly on Tuesday, has found that incorrect classification of forest land in Kutch by the Gujarat government led to undue financial benefit to the tune of Rs 58.64 crore to Gautam Adani-promoted Mundra Port and Special Economic Zone Limited (MPSEZL) in 2008-09. CAG had reported the matter to the government in May 2014, though its reply

was awaited by the CAG. The issue pertains to two pieces of forest land measuring 1,840 hectare and 168.42 hectare in Mundra and Dhrub villages of Kutch district, respectively. As per details, the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) had, based on a July 1999 proposal from the Forests and Environment Department of Government of Gujarat (GoG), granted in-principle approval for diversion of the two pieces of land to Adani Chemicals

Limited (ACL) for setting up a solar salt project and salt washery in May 2004. The ACL, however, CAG reports, “…sought (September 2007) the permission of the MoEF through the GoG for using the forest land to develop a terminal and solid bulk cargo handling facilities at Mundra port in the name of MPSEZL on the plea of changing business environment and opportunities.” While the decision of MoEF in this regard was awaited, on March 28, 2008, the Supreme Court in its judgment classified forests of India into six ecological classes and fixed rates of the net present value (NPV) to be recovered from any user agency for diversion of forest land for non-forest purposes.

pull down a temple at Nandasan town, which was being constructed illegally on grazing land. A bench of Justice Akil Kureshi and Justice J B Pardiwala asked the officials to explain their act of ignoring the court order from August last year. This happened after the original petitioner, Vishnu Raval, brought it to the court's notice that neither the authorities nor those involved in the construction had moved the Supreme Court, but the district panchayat president cited an appeal in the apex court and ordered a stay on the demolition ordered by the HC. Raval's lawyer, Rajesh Shah, demanded action against those responsible for not implementing the court's order on the basis of an alleged blatant lie in

the name of pendency in the SC. The HC sought a reply to this by April 24. In Nandasan village of Kadi block, a temple was coming up on a 2,280-square metre plot of grazing land since 2009. The HC intervened in response to a PIL by Raval, who complained against the illegal construction and against the authorities turning a blind eye to it despite various complaints being made in this regard. The HC ordered the village panchayat to remove the temple from the gauchar land and showed grave concern.

Gujarat high court on Wednesday gave the green signal to the beautification project for Jamnagar's famous Lakhota Lake by dismissing two public interest litigations which took exception to the civic body's project on the grounds that green laws were ignored. A bench headed by Acting Chief Justice V M Sahai dismissed the PILs and lifted the stay granted in August last year. The stay was granted after Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) and Lakhota Nature Club raised objections to the proposed development project, which is on the lines of Ahmedabad's Kankaria lake. It was argued that the construction and creation of amusement park around the

lack would disturb the tranquility and create an imbalance in the environment. The petitions claimed that birds like flamingoes, pelicans, sea gulls, storks throng the lake, which has become the part of the city's identity for tourists and bird lovers. The proposed project would not only disturb the environment, but the plan to put up gates would snatch away the place from locals. This is because of the proposal to introduce a fee for visitors. While granting the stay, a bench of

Justice Akil Kureshi and Justice J B Pardiwala had questioned whether the civic body had carried out an impact assessment for the project. The court also asked if the local ecology was damaged, how would the civic body compensate for it. The HC had even pulled up the civic body for not getting clearance from the Union environment ministry. However, with the lifting of the stay, Jamnagar Municipal Corporation is free to go ahead with its beautification project.
