Neither the judiciary nor the ex-bureaucrats wanted the ongoing events todemonstrate to the world “who we are” since their view apparently is that India is differentfrom what the hate-mongers propagate.Soon afterwards, an organization of Hindus living in America came out with a statement,saying that Hindus have a special responsibility to denounce hate speech. Unfortunately for the BJP, the commission under a former chief justice of India refused to toethe BJP’s line. But that does not mean that the party has given up its efforts to mould thenation in its own Hindu-centric image where the minorities will be increasingly relegated to the status of second class citizens. Hence, the attempts to dictate what they should wear – no hijab – what they should eat – nohalal meat – how they should pray – no loudspeakers in the mosques. It is these impositionsof the majority community which the liberal democracies are noting as matters of “particularconcern” because they militate against the generally accepted norms of interaction betweenvarious religious communities.Before the BJP’s ascent, India had always taken pride in its secularism. Under the BJP,however, secularism has become a “dirty word” – the Hindutva groups dub it as “sickularism”– and India is lapsing into a majoritarian country where the minorities are shunned as theBJP’s proposal to change all the Muslim names in the Delhi area shows. Already, severaprominent Muslim names like that of Allahahad and Mughal Sarai in U.P. have been turnedinto Hindu ones.It is unlikely that sizeable sections of Hindus will be pleased with this wholesale obliterationof Muslim names (which relect a composite past) and hold up the exercise as an example of“who we are”. IDBI Bank on Monday posted 35 per cent rise in net profit at ₹ 691 crore for the quarter ended March 2022 due to fall in bad loan provisions as non performing assets (NPAs) came down. The bank had posted a net profit of ₹ 512 crore for the same quarter of 2020-21.Total income during January-March period of 2021-22, however, was lower at ₹ 5,444.08 crore from ₹ 6,894.86 crore in the year-ago period, IDBI Bank said in a regulatory filing.The bank’s core interest income during the period was down
at ₹ 4,599.67 crore as against ₹ 5,781.48 crore a year ago. Income from other sources was also lower at ₹ 844 crore from ₹ 1,113 crore.The proportion of gross bad loans or NPAs of the bank fell to 19.14 per cent of gross loans at March-end 2022 as against 22.37 per cent by March 2021.In value terms, gross NPAs stood at ₹ 34,115 crore as against ₹ 36,212 crore. Likewise, net NPAs came down to 1.27 per cent (Rs 1,856 crore) from 1.97 per cent (Rs 2,519 crore).Thus, provisions for bad loans and contingencies for the quarter were trimmed.

A team of doctors at Apollo Hospitals, Ahmedabad, led by chief surgical gastroenterologist Dr Chirag Desai, has set the record for surgically removing the heaviest tumour in India and has been awarded by the India Book of Records. Notably, the team had given a new lease of life to a 56-yearold woman by surgically removing a 47 kg tumour— the biggest non-ovarian tumour successfully removed in India so far. The woman, a government employee and a resident of Devgadh Baria, had been carrying the tumour for 18 years.Apart from the tumour, the team of eight doctors, including four surgeons, also removed abdominal wall tissues and excess skin weighing around 7 kg during the surgery on January 27. “Pay premium only for the distance you drive” HDFC ERGO launches an innovative motor insurance policy under the ‘Sandbox’ program of IRDAI
HDFC ERGO General Insurance Company, a leading private sector general insurance company, announced the launch of its ‘Pay as you Drive’ program; an insurance solution that offers distancebased insurance to reduce upfront costs of premium. This policy will be best suited for those customers who prefer to drive less or have multiple cars with some of those driven less than the others. This program, under the regulatory sandbox, is applicable for 10,000 policies or ₹ 50 lacs of premium whichever happens earlier and is being offered exclusively through Maruti
Suzuki Insurance Broking Private Limited. A lot of customers do not use their vehicles frequently and end up paying the same insurance premiums as daily vehicle users. The “Pay as you drive” program brings the opportunity to pay a premium based on the actual usage of the car.
