Domestic Hate Politics Puts Its Impact On India’s Image Abroad When the US-based commission for international religious freedom branded India as a country of “particular concern” because of its poor human rights record. a pro-BJP newspaper described the American outfit as “India-hating”. The casual dismissal of the criticism showed what external affairs minister S. Jaishankar hashailed as a confident assertion of “who we are” as India charts its own course in worldpolitics and does not want to be a “pale imitation” of others. However, within days of the American thinktank’s unflattering observation, the Indiansupreme court directed the Himachal Pradesh government to act against any “hate” speechagainst Muslim at a gathering of Hindu fundamentalists and more than 100 former civilservants urged the prime minister to speak out against the prevailing “frenzy of hate-filleddestruction”. Neither the judiciary nor the ex-bureaucrats wanted the ongoing events todemonstrate to the world “who we are” since their view apparently is that India is differentfrom what the hate-mongers propagate.Soon afterwards, an organization of Hindus living in America came out with a statement, saying that Hindus have a special responsibility to denounce hate speech. Evidently, notevery Indian, whether at home or abroad, agrees with the external affairs minister’sperception of “who we are”, with a not inconsequential group in favour of imitating those whoextol human and, especially minority, rights. There is little doubt that the minister’s views are in line with the BJP’s ideas about what thenation is and should be. For the BJP, the last one thousand years were an era of darknesswhen the foreigners – Muslims and the British – ruled and tried to turn India into a “paleimitation” of their way of life. The BJP refused to acknowledge that these thousand years were less a period of strifebetween the native Hindus and the invading outsiders than a time when the coexistence ofthe two groups led to the evolution of a composite culture which permeated all walks of lifefrom art and architecture to music and cuisine in addition to heralding a form of governanceunder a constitution which extolled the nation’s diversity. It isn’t surprising that one of the objectives of the first BJP government under Atal BehariVajpayee was to abolish the constitution by setting up a commission for the purpose. Unfortunately for the BJP, the commission under a former chief justice of India refused to toethe BJP’s line. But that does not mean that the party has given up its efforts to mould thenation in its own Hindu-centric image where the minorities will be increasingly relegated to the status of second class citizens. Hence, the attempts to dictate what they should wear – no hijab – what they should eat – nohalal meat – how they should pray – no loudspeakers in the mosques. It is these impositionsof the majority community which the liberal democracies are noting as matters of “particularconcern” because they militate against the generally accepted norms of interaction betweenvarious religious communities. Before the BJP’s ascent, India had always taken pride in its secularism. Under the BJP,however, secularism has become a “dirty word” – the Hindutva groups dub it as “sickularism”– and India is lapsing into a majoritarian country where the minorities are shunned as theBJP’s proposal to change all the Muslim names in the Delhi area shows. Already, severaprominent Muslim names like that of Allahahad and Mughal Sarai in U.P. have been turnedinto Hindu ones.It is unlikely that sizeable sections of Hindus will be pleased with this wholesale obliterationof Muslim names (which relect a composite past) and hold up the exercise as an example of“who we are”. To them, this is not the kind of “us” that we want to be if only because suchlinguistic vandalism shows Hindus as mean-minded bigots. The chances are that it will not be easy for the external affairs minister to sell this “idea” ofIndia with its inherent vicious communalism even if as a newcomer to the BJP, he may wantto be more loyal than the king to consolidate his position in the party. However, since the continuing “frenzy” of hate king to consolidate his position in the party. However, since thecontinuing “frenzy” of hate is bound to keep Hindu-Muslim (and even Hindu-Christian) relations on the boil, the country’s foreign policy will tend to be singed by as much of the heat as the - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara domestic scene. The concept.

Former England captain compares Kohli with Ronaldo; ‘Those are big brands’ Agency News: New Delhi Star batter Virat Kohli finally found his run-scoring mojo as he struck his first half-century of the ongoing IPL season, albeit in a losing cause. After a string of low scores including two golden ducks, Kohli hit 58 off 53 balls to help Royal Challengers Bangalore reach 170 for six against Gujarat Titans. But the IPL newbies overhauled the total after David Miller (39) and Rahul Tewatia (43) put on an unbeaten stand of 79 at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai. Kohli’s innings received mixed reactions. While some lauded the 33-year-old batter for getting runs under his belt, a few

questioned his strike rate. And that makes sense given the fact that Kohli’s fifty wasn’t enough to power his team to the victory. In his first 10 balls in the game, Kohli scored 14 runs, which comprised of three boundaries,

all against Mohammed Shami. In his next 30 balls, he scored 31 runs with three boundaries and a six. He eventually reached his fifty in 45 balls. Former England skipper Kevin Pietersen said Kohli would be “fuming” that

Premier League: Arsenal, Spurs maintain Champions League chase; survival boost for Everton

Agency News: London As you were in the pursuit of Champions League qualification. At the other end of the Premier League, though, the relegation scrap just got even tighter. Arsenal remained in fourth place after Gabriel’s header secured a 2-1 win at West Ham to stay two points ahead of Tottenham after

its north London rival beat Leicester 3-1 on Sunday through Son Heung-min’s double. Chelsea looks well placed to qualify for the Champions League despite now being only three points ahead of Arsenal with four games remaining after losing 1-0 at Everton. It’s a result — secured by Richarlison — that gives Everton renewed hope of avoiding relegation after a 68-year stay in the top division. Everton moved two points from safety with five matches to go and a game in hand over both Leeds and Burnley, which are just above the drop zone. The latest came 59 seconds into the second half at Goodison Park. Richarlison and Demarai Gray pressured Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta into losing possession and the Brazilian benefited by sweeping a shot past goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. But Richarlison could face Football Association action after picking up a lit blue flare during his goal celebrations and throwing it off the field.

his runs didn’t help his team win the game. Pietersen compared the Indian with football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo and underlined how the two athletes come with huge brand value. ”What he needs to do is to have a look at Manchester United and Cristiano Ronaldo. Two similar brands in their different teams and in their sports. You have Virat Kohli right at the top of cricket, his brand is right at the top of cricket. Cristiano Ronaldo is right at the top of football. One plays for Manchester United, and one plays for RCB and India. Those are big brands and they are going to be talking points. Those big brands also want to maintain their status.

Inventories of finished goods climbed to the highest level in more than a decade, while indexes for exports and imports slumped. The figures came a day after the Communist Party’s Politburo, led by Xi, promised to meet its economic targets while at the same time sticking with its Covid Zero policy to curb infections. Mrunal Thakur’s skincare secrets during hot summers Agency News: Mumbai Mrunal Thakur has become the first brand ambassador of a hair removal product from Nair Why do you love summer? How do you care for your skin during this season?I love summer as it reminds me of long holidays with my family, beaches and pool parties. I can also sport all my sexy summer wear - shorts, minis and of course swimwear. But added sun exposure to the skin also means a change in my skincare routine. I am really careful about going the extra mile to care for my face and body in summer. Thankfully Nair’s product, for which I am the first brand ambassador, has a range of products that help me keep my summer skincare routine on track. How do you keep your body hydrated?Summer months would need you to pay special attention to hydration at all levels. A lot of people focus on drinking a lot of water and fluids. But while I do that, I also make sure my skin is hydrated at all times. I use face and body masks that moisturise my skin. Let me tell you a secret. Being an actress means I have to be groomed with no body hair at all times. Instead of hitting the salon, I use the moisturising creams of this product that I endorse that deeply hydrates the skin, even while I get rid of the hair. You also use leg masks for deep exfoliation? With an increase in temperature, your oil glands tend to work on an overdrive and leave you in a cycle where you attract more dirt and grime and then dull, damaged skin. While exfoliation for the face is well talked about, this is something I do for my legs. I use leg masks from Nair for deep exfoliation. The seaweed mask is wonderful for hydrating the skin as it locks in moisture. The charcoal and natural clay formula gives a deep pores cleansing. My legs in my minis look so much smoother and softer.
