Stop killing people in the name of Islam: is Islam the religion of peace..?
“Stop killing people in the name of Islam”, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said on Saturday as she vowed to do everything to eliminate terrorists from the country after 20 foreigners were killed in an attack on a cafe in Bangladesh claimed by the Islamic State terror group. Announcing a two-day state mourning for those killed in the worst terror attack in the country, Hasina asked all, including the general public, to get united to resist a “handful of terrorists”. Bangladesh endured its own Mumbai-like suicide attack over the weekend when heavily armed terrorists targeted a bakery frequented by foreigners and took them hostage before being were gunned down by security forces. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility; whether or not the group that has ravaged Syria and Iraq was involved in the Dhaka attack will be established in the days to come but this conscious targeting of foreigners appears geared to exacerbate the conflict between the State establishment and extremist forces that have long waged a bitter and bloody battle. The Sheikh Hasina government’s counterterrorism policies will be under a lot more international pressure following this attack. That sort of scrutiny does occasionally helps as with the case of the Lashkar-e-Toiba after the Mumbai attacks, when the Pakistani establishment was forced to rein in the violence of the group if not its infrastructure. Ms Hasina’s government unfortunately has nowhere that kind of leverage as a range of Islamist groups have been relentlessly challenging the authority of her government, and have, over the last year, launched several brutal, often unspeakably violent attacks on bloggers, atheist activists, publishers, Hindus, Shias and foreigners. Extremism and terrorism have proved almost impossible to tackle in Bangladesh as they themselves are a product of the deep dysfunction in the country’s politics and State institutions. Ms Hasina’s Awami League party and government is both a product and a driver of that dysfunction. Created via a bloody civil war in 1971, Bangladesh has a very violent political culture and a gridlocked politics dominated by two warring parties and, as pointed by the International Crisis Group (ICG), it has extremely partisan State structures whereby institutions like the civil service, police and judiciary are manned or manipulated by party faithful. Hasina’s government is opposed to violent Islamists but it has also presided over widespread repression of opposition parties like Bangladesh Nationalist Party and the Jamaat-e-Islami. This and the partisan nature of the criminal justice system has bred alienation and enhanced the appeal of extremist organisations and terror groups. Furthermore, as a politically-freighted bureaucracy is too invested in the continuation of a regime and prone to overreach, the Hasina government has also cracked down on the media and sections of the civil society, further undermining its legitimacy. Bangladesh is experiencing a crisis of public institutions of which terrorism is one manifestation. The focus now will be on finding the conspirators but the country desperately needs a new form of politics and a sequence of steps that will manage social tensions. Right now that sounds like wishful thinking.

Sibi hops on his bike and goes to the village. Somehow, our makers make it a point to include romance in whatever they do. So, Sibi falls in love with Bindu Madhavi, in the haunted village. The actress is seen in about a dozen scenes in the movie. It isn’t even a supporting role, it’s a cameo. Karunakaran doesn’t play a sidekick here. He’s seen as an equal; still the heroine is made to choose Sibi, because Sibi is the hero. Karunakaran and Sibi stay at a haunted house for a week where all the drama unfolds. At the beginning, it’s just a series of gags. The film takes its time to drop the horror bomb on us.

This will help SBI in financing grid connected rooftop solar photovoltaic (GRPV) projects at very competitive rates, the country’s largest lender said in a statement today. “This in turn will catalyse the market and support the government to faster achieve its target to generate 40 GW of electricity from widespread installation of rooftop solar photo-voltaic panels,” it said. The eligible beneficiaries under the facility would be developers, aggregators and end-users, who wish to set up solar PV projects mainly on commercial, industrial and institutional rooftops. Scores of new airports have been built around the country but many are yet to open because airlines do not see sufficient demand as ticket prices are too high for the majority Indians. That has raised worries the government is building infrastructure few can afford to use. Civil aviation ministry officials, however, said on Friday that the government has identified 30 recently built airports, and another 60 nearing completion, that it says it can get airlines to start flying to soon.

Sharma said that in light of the rising number of instances of financial fraud, the audit should examine the financial sector’s risks and vulnerabilities, and regulators’ abilities to mitigate such cases. He also added that in a country that is largely financially illiterate, the possibility of fraud was much higher. “The emerging international trend of the oversight of the regulators, in order to provide a higher level of assurance, is an interesting development that must be watched to inform our own system of oversight and assurance,” he said. Sharma said there needed to be a “comprehensive strategy” to deal with fraud committed against banks, and that regulators needed to work together to improve the capacity to deal with such cases.

Gujarat police’s Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) in Ahmedabad has approached a local court seeking to discharge a Karnataka man arrested last month by the state’s anti-terrorism squad for being a “SIMI operative” linked to the 2008 serial blasts in the city. In its application filed before the chief metropolitan magistrate on Wednesday, the DCB said there was no evidence in the case against Nasir, alias Parvez Rangrez, an autorickshaw driver from Alimnagar in Karnataka’s
Belgaum. The anti-terrorism squad had arrested Nasir last month for allegedly attending terror training camps in Kerala’s Wagamon and Gujarat’s Pavagadh. The arrest was based on a warrant pending in the name of another person named Nasir, alias Parvez Autowala, who was named in a statement submitted by one of the co-accused in the blasts case, Hafiz alias Adnan, on September 24, 2009. However, C N Rajput, the Assistant Commissioner of Police (DCB), told the chief metropolitan magistrate that “during the custodial interrogation of the accused, no information about his involvement in the offence came out”.

It also issued fresh notices to Information Commissioner M Sridhar Acharyulu, who had passed the order, and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who had demanded the information.
