AAP taken aback by Navjot Singh Sidhu’s move to float political outfit

Sidhuforms‘Aawaaz-e-Punjab’ (H.S.) | New Delhi

Former BJP leader and cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu on Friday launched a new political outfit in Punjab called ‘Awaaz-ePunjab’ along with Bains brothers of Ludhiana – Simarjeet Singh Bains and Balwinder Singh Bains – and former Indian hockey captain Pargat Singh. According to reports, the formal announcement will be made within 3-4 days. His decision to float a new party comes after several flip-flops where he was almost certain to join the Aam Aadmi Party, and the Congress party too expressed their

willingness to welcome him to their fold. Sidhu, a former Lok Sabha MP, had quit the Rajya Sabha on July 18. Since then, speculation was rife that he would join AAP as the CM candidate for Punjab, but it did not materialise. Many believed after his

talks with AAP “failed”, Sidhu decided to float the outfit along with some like-minded people. He was also clearly miffed with the state of affairs in BJP when he claimed that he quit Rajya Sabha as the party had asked him to stay away from Pun-

velopment and trust.” He is expected to speak on a host of issues, including the upcoming elections in Uttar Pradesh and Robert Vadra land deals among others. On the Dalits issues, PM Modi told CNN-News 18, “All those self-appointed guardians who were trying to create tension in the country did not like that Modi is with the Dalits… That Modi devotes himself to tribals. I am devoted to the

welfare of all Dalits, oppressed, underprivileged and deprived.” Commenting on the Robert Vadra land deals in Haryana, PM Modi rejected allegations of vendetta and insisted that there are no instructions from his government for conducting probe against any political party or dynasty. “I have been Chief Minister of a state (Gujarat) for 14 years. The history is witness to it that I have never opened any file because of political reasons. There has been no such allegation against me. It has been over two-and-a-half years here (in government at the centre). There is no instruction from the government to open any file.”

PM Narendra Modi interview to Network 18 LIVE: ‘People of Kashmir need both development and trust’

(H.S.) | Chennai A woman police inspector today allegedly attempted to set herself ablaze at the Secretariat here when the Tamil Nadu Assembly was on. Police sources and eyewitnesses said the woman doused herself with kerosene and tried to set herself ablaze at the entry leading to the Assembly. However, police immediately foiled her bid and whisked her away, they said. The incident caused a flutter as the assembly proceedings were on, on the last day of the current session.

(H.S.) | New Delhi Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s interview to CNNNews 18, his second to a private news channel, is being telecast live. Speaking on the Kashmir issue, PM Modi said, “I always maintain that people of Kashmir need both development and trust. And 125 crore Indians have always stayed committed to development. We will march on the path of de-

jab. After he put down his resignation, BJP sought to downplay the issue. BJP leader Prabhat Jha had said, “Had he been a politician, he would not

have resigned. There is no need to worry. Party is bigger than any personality.” Once his chapter with the BJP was closed, Sidhu looked to the Aam

Aadmi Party. There was widespread speculation that he could be its face in the Assembly polls next year. Sidhu reportedly also wanted to be projected as the AAP’s chief minister candidate in Punjab. But it did not work out. However, Arvind Kejriwal put all speculations to rest when he said he had met Sidhu, but needs time to decide and whether or not he joins the party must be respected. “Wud Navjot Sidhu ji join AAP- lot of rumours? Its my duty to put forward our side. We

have greatest greatest regard for this ckt legend. He met me last week (sic),” he had tweeted. In the meantime, Congress leader Amarinder Singh had said that Sidhu was welcome to join Congress as it is in his DNA, as his father happened to be a Congressman. But eventually, no decision was taken on his entry to the Congress fold either. The entire episode was today put to rest when Sidhu decided to float the ‘Aawaaz-e-Punjab’ Party leaving the Aam Aadmi Party visibly shocked.

Will Congress be able to snatch away ‘nationalism’ card from BJP? A Google search on Rahul Gandhi returns queries related to his age and marriage as the two most popular topics. It’s hardly a reliable statistic. Nevertheless, it gives us an indication of how the Gandhi dynasty scion is perceived in popular opinion. More than a decade into active politics, the Congress vice-president still retains the impression of an unwilling hero unable to carry his surname and completely at odds with the greatness thrust on him. Try as he or his party might, that impression was further reinforced, not dispelled, by Rahul’s latest shenanigans in court on the issue of whether RSS is indeed responsible for killing Mahatma Gandhi. The Congress spin doctors have since been busy projecting Rahul’s decision to stand for trial in the defamation case as an act of volition. They are at pains to point out that Rahul has decided to take on the RSS as part of a larger ideological battle. But this argument is specious. It is futile now to claim that Rahul is keen to ‘set the record straight’ and ‘eager to lock horns with the RSS’ when all that he has done in the last two years is to seek legal recourse for avoiding the trial. In fact, it has barely been a week since Rahul’s counsel Kapil Sibal, while pleading for quashing of the case, told Supreme Court on 24 August that his client never meant to implicate the RSS organization as a whole in Mahatma Gandhi’s murder. A closer look at the timeline of the case and court proceedings on Thursday would reveal that Rahul’s latest shot at martyrdom is a belated attempt at making the best out of a script gone awry. The defamation suit was filed by RSS functionary Rajesh Kunte back in 2014, acting against the Congress vice-president’s remarks at a public rally in Bhiwandi in March where he reportedly said: “RSS ke logon ne Gandhiji ko goli maari aur unke log Gandhiji ki baat karte hai.” Facing a court summons issued by a Bhiwandi magistrate court, the Congress vice-president had moved the Bombay High Court seeking quashing of the defamation complaint. It is instructive to note that on that occasion, Rahul Gandhi through his counsel RS Cheema had taken a very different stand from the one he adopted on Thursday. According to a report in The Times of India, Cheema told the High Court on 10 March, 2015, that “Rahul was addressing the members of a rally on the point of philosophy of Congress and his statement should be read in that context. Rahul made a plain statement and did not intent to harm the reputation of RSS…” His petition was dismissed by the court. This is direct contradiction with Congress’s narrative that there has been no U-turn from the its vice-president. Other inconsistencies remain. Soon after Rahul’s declaration in court on Thursday that he stands by the 2014 statement, party spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala rushed in to say that Rahul’s “fight is not against any individual, but against an ideology that divides the country using caste, region and religion. This will further embolden the Congress to fight communalism”, according to a report in Business Line. If fighting for secularism was Rahul’s grand motive, why did he repeatedly try to avoid the trial? What happened inside the hallowed premises of Supreme Court on Thursday further corroborates the impression that Rahul Gandhi was actually cornered and had little option left except facing trial.

Shivaay vs Ae Dil Hai Mushkil: KRK changes tune, says Ajay Actor Sreejith Ravi in Devgn and not Karan Johar offered money to promote film police custody for allegedly (H.S.) | Mumbai

After an angry and hurt Ajay Devgn slammed Kamaal R Khan (KRK) for bad-mouthing his film Shivaay and exposed him for having allegedly taken Rs 25 lakh from Karan Johar to tweet praises about Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, the self-proclaimed film critic did a U-turn by claiming that Johar never paid him anything. KRK admitted to taking the money in a taped telephonic conversation with Ajay’s business partner, Kumar Mangat. In a text message sent to indianexpress.com, KRK wrote, “Kumar Mangat is my close friend. We both produced films like Aatma and Alone. Please listen to the tape properly. He called me to complain that I said bad

about Shivaay and I said that nothing like that. He was complaining again and again that I am praising Ae Dil Hai Mushkil while other critics have said bad about it. Still I said that no I am not supporting Karan. But Kumar Mangat was still complaining that I am favouring Karan when I am Kumar’s friend. So to close the topic and avoid Kumar Mangat I said that I am favouring Karan because he paid

me 25 lakhs. But Karan has not paid me anything. Please note we both were talking about favouring on Twitter only, not about reviews. Nobody can buy my review, whoever is he. The core idea is expanded upon in all three segments, but the results are uneven: some parts work (especially in the second segment), the others not so much. Vinay Pathak as an office drone who is forced to ‘funand-frolic’ via a monster boss (Ashwin Mushran) and committee directives comes off familiar. Its flatness is rescued by

its shocking end: at what point does a worm turn? How much can you push a man, before he turns into a killing machine? The middle segment gives us parallel narratives, one being played out in the home of a pair of women whose breadwinner is in hospital in a coma, and the other unspooling inside a TV in the lives of the fictional ‘adarsh purush’ named Purushottam. This leaves you with a bunch of ideas: are all ideal men a figment of florid TV screen-writing, are all real-life men such boors, and where does real life begin and where does reel life end? Is dutiful love a false negative? This one is the most effective and Amruta Subhash and Uttara Baokar, good actors both, tag-team well.

Island City movie review: When you are alone and lonely in a big city

(H.S.) | New Delhi There are several striking visuals in Ruchika Oberoi’s maiden venture which instantly communicate its central theme of dystopian alienation: a large city can turn so impersonal, our relations have become so transactional and empty, and our lives can become so mechanistic that the only one capable of any human warmth, is, ironically, a robot. My father was a professional action director and I have an emotional connection with this industry. It therefore pains me to see that people like Kamaal R Khan are holding the film industry to ransom by spreading negativity about films to extort money from producers. It is very sad that people from our own industry are supporting such elements and spoiling the ethos of the film industry. I would strongly demand that this be thoroughly investigated by competent authorities to clarify if Karan Johar was indeed involved in this.”

flashing at school girls

Malayalam actor Sreejith Ravi was taken into custody on Thursday by police for allegedly flashing a group of school girls, according to Manorama. The girls, studying at a prominent school in Pathirippalam, complained to the police that a man sitting in a car flashed at them near Pathirippala

market in Ottappallam. The girls noted the car number and reported it to the police. The car belongs to Ravi, but the actor denied any involvement in the incident. “The car number mentioned in the complaint belongs to me. But it could not have been my car. I think the students took down the number of the car wrongly and coincidentally it turned out to be my car’s number,” Ravi told Manorama. The actor claimed he was innocent as the girls did not mention his name in their complaint and the police registered an FIR against an unidentified person. Ravi recently played the part of a police officer in the Malayalam movie Kathakali.

Agency | Mumbai Union Finance minister Arun Jaitley Thursday said both government and private insurance firms are likely to see a spurt in growth once Indians decide to become a pensioned and insured society. “Indians are yet to realise the benefits of a pensioned and insured society. Two of our recent initiatives (proposal to tax EPF and a provision in the 7th Pay Commission to deduct money for pension of government employees) had to be rolled back due to opposition. But I am hopeful that India will become a fully insured and socially secured nation as economic expansion gathers momentum over the years, “ said Jaitley who was speaking at an event organised to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC). The finance minister said LIC which started off as a monopoly organisation has dominated the insurance business even after the sector was opened for private players 16 years ago.

Maybe a little extra rest did Novak Djokovic some good. Everyone should know the answer to that sometime Friday afternoon. That’s when Djokovic, the U.S Open’s defending champion and No. 1 seed, is scheduled to play his third-round match in Arthur Ashe Stadium against Mikhail Youzhny. Djokovic hasn’t played a point since Monday, when he experienced problems with his right arm. He was massaged by a trainer after only five games, then repeatedly shook that arm or flexed his elbow and grimaced following serves, even the ones that were far slower than he usually hits. He also dropped a set in an opening-round Grand Slam match for the first time since 2010. After that victory, Djokovic didn’t want to discuss what was going on with his arm, deflecting ques-

I hope that I’ll feel overall good, so I’m able to perform at my best for the next match.” Turned out that “next match” did not come Wednesday, because the man 12-time major champion Djokovic was supposed to play in the second round, Jiri Vesely, withdrew from the tournament, citing inflammation in his left forearm. So after getting what could amount to about 90 hours off, Djokovic will test things against Youzhny, who is currently ranked 61st but used to be in the top 10 and was a semifi-

nalist at Flushing Meadows in 2006 and 2010. Youzhny also has won all six sets he’s played this week. After looking nearly unbeatable while winning four consecutive major titles, capped by his first at the French Open in June to complete a career Grand Slam, Djokovic has seemed more vulnerable of late. He lost in the third round of Wimbledon, exited the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in the first round, then sat out the Cincinnati Masters because of a sore left wrist. “Each day,” Djokovic said, “presents us some kind of challenges that we need to overcome.”

Lionel Messi battling groin injury, could miss Venezuela qualifier (H.S.) | Mendoza

Agency | Toronto With 13 Indians already confirmed to have been infected with the Zika virus in Singapore, experts have more bad news to share. A new study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases has warned that India has all the right ingredients for a potential Zika epidemic. A combination of factors — high travel volumes from Zika affected areas in the Americas, local presence of mosquitos capable of transmitting Zika virus, suitable climatic conditions, large populations and/or limited health resources — put India and few other countries in Africa and Asia pacific at greatest risk of Zika virus transmission, the researchers found. “An estimated 2.6 billion people live in areas of Africa and Asia-Pacific where the local mosquito species and suitable climatic conditions mean that local Zika virus transmission is theoretically possible,” said study author Kamran Khan from St Michael’s Hospital, Toronto, Canada. Lionel Messi’s triumphant Argentina comeback has been tempered by a hint he may not be fit to play in Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier in Venezuela. Messi, who had gone back on his decision to quit the team following their Copa America final defeat in June, scored the only goal in a 1-0 home win over Uruguay on Thursday that sent Argentina to the top of the South American group. However, the Argentina captain said he had a groin pain and had to think about his fitness at the start of a busy season for his national side and his club Barcelona. “My groin is hurting a lot, from before this match,” Messi told reporters. “We’ll see, I always want to be (in the team) but there are also a lot of import-

The finding highlights the security challenges plaguing consumer routers. The vulnerability allows an attacker to install their own firmware to the device, which would still work as before, but with back doors and other unwanted features. An attacker exploiting the flaw would be able to listen in on unencrypted traffic going through the router, not just device-to-internet, but device-to-device inside the home; as well as manipulate the victim’s browsing sessions by redirecting to malicious sites. “By changing the firmware, the attacker can change any and all rules of the router,” said Janne Kauhanen, cyber security expert at F-Secure.

Having this error pointed out by the Twitterati, Morgan was quick to tweak his post, which now reads — “Hi @virendersehwag, I bet you 1 million rupees to charity that England wins a ODI World Cup before India wins another Olympic Gold. Accept?” Social media users, of course, have not spared the man. Even before Sehwag, people have been calling Morgan out for his absolutely unrequired posts on the micro-blogging website. Morgan, on the other hand, has been unperturbed and unapologetic. One user has even gone ahead and tweeted that he hopes the water in Britain is cold enough for Morgan to apply to his burn.

While majority in India celebrated P V Sindhu and Sakshi Malik’s victory and equally lauded Dipa Karmakar’s performance, there were others who spewed uncalled for hate on other players. Though many expected Indians to perform better than they did in Rio Olympics this year, the amount of trolling and hate they were subjected to on social media after losing was absolutely unethical. Abhinav Bindra, Indian professional shooter, was recently trolled on Twitter for his loss at Rio. He narrowly missed out on a medal in the men’s 10m air rifle shooting event, coming

Gujarat HC reserves verdict on pleas of lawyer Mangukia, client

Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

The Gujarat High Court on Thursday reserved its verdict on petitions moved by senior lawyer B M Mangukia and his client, seeking quashing of an FIR lodged against them for “fraudulently” obtaining online income tax data of the client’s husband. Justice Paresh Upadhyay reserved the verdict following the conclusion of the hearing. The Ahmedabad Detection of Crime Branch (DCB), which is investigating the case, has alleged that Mangukia while handling a divorce case obtained data of his client’s husband from the Income Tax website. Mangukia’s lawyer refuted the allegation and sought quashing of the FIR. Public prosecutor Mitesh Amin argued before the court that the password of the com-

plainant was fraudulently obtained by the accused and confidential data, which is supposed to be in the possession of complainant and the Income tax officers, were obtained. These documents were allegedly used in the divorce plea. Amin argued that prima facie it has been established that data were obtained from one of the computers of Mangukia’s office. He said that Internet protocol (IP) address of the computer used in the fraud has already been identified. He said that the question of quashing doesn’t arise at this stage as the investigation has yet not completed. Mangukia got embroiled in a controversy last year when he filed a habeas corpus petition in the Gujarat High Court for Patidar quota agitation leader Hardik Patel. The petition, which alleged kidnapping of Hardik by police, turned out to be false and the court had criticised Mangukia for taking the court for a ride.

It is not a barrier to entry. It is not a differentiator for any player. We will look to remain competitive. Our services are going to be superior with a wider presence,” said Sood.

Ship from Alang goes adrift; gets grounded in Gulf of Khambhat Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

A cargo vessel got grounded near Bharuch in the Gulf of Khambhat on Friday after the anchor cable of this vessel broke and it went adrift from Alang ship breaking yard, located across the Gulf in Gujarat. The officials of the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) are now trying to tug the vessel weighing 7000 LDT (Light Displacement Tonnage) and its 10-member engine crew back to Alang from roughly about 15 nautical miles where it lies grounded. The incident happened on Thursday evening when the cable chain connecting the ship with its anchor broke. “The ship was lying at the anchorage for the last

1.5 years due to a pending court case. Once the anchor cable broke, the ship began to drift. The crew on the ship tried to start the engine. Thought the engine started, it stalled after sometime. Now without an anchor and engine the ship went adrift due to the strong sea current which can be as strong as 5-10 knots. An attempt was made to stop the vessel from drifting away. However, the small tug boats at Alang could not prevent the ship from drifting away. The vessel has drifted about 15 nautical miles before it has got grounded near Bharuch.
