Amid DAP shortages, sales of complex fertilisers soar Record international prices of fertilisers, it seems, has forced Indian farmers to go in for more diversified and balanced plant nutrient application. This is borne out by higher sales of complex fertilisers and single super phosphate (SSP) in the current rabi cropping season, amid widespread shortages of the more popular diammonium phosphate (DAP) and muriate of potash (MOP). Retail sales of complex fertilisers – which contain nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potash (K) and sulphur (S) in various combinations – totaled 27.7 lakh tonnes (lt) in OctoberNovember, marking an almost 50% increase over the 18.48 lt during the corresponding two months of 2020. Even more spectacular was the more than two-third jump in SSP sales: From 9.5 lt in October-November 2020 to 15.78 lt in October-November 2021. Complex fertilisers include products such as ‘20:20:0:13’, ‘10:26:26:0’ and ‘12:32:16:0’ that denote different NPKS ratios.

SUNVILLA SAMACHAR Fraud In The Name Of Free Market: Fit Case For Court Intervention It is another instance of the diabolic game of giving by the left hand and taking by the right, the Modi government has played a prank on people by raising LPG prices. After all the hype and hoopla about the excise duty cut, though negligible in terms of the total tax, by the Centre, following by much sermonising to the states to follow suit, the price of the LPG gas meant for commercial use has been hiked by Rs 100 per cylinder. This is the second price increase in the space of a month. The price increase for commercial use LPG means it will have a ripple effect, affecting every sector of the economy, thus further burdening people. From transport to food, it will force price increases in every sphere of citizen’s life, already down in the dumps due to a sequence of debacles, man-made as well natural. First it was Modi’s misadventure of demonetisation, followed by a premature lockdown, whose timing went terribly wrong, forcing the century’s biggest job displacement and finally the covid crisis over which nobody had any control. With spiralling inflation, the new price increase will also have serious implications for the economy, further complicating a much-needed, but reluctant recovery. To add insult to injury, the price increase happens when the petroleum prices in the world market are crashing, driven by fears of a new wave of infection on account of the more dangerous Omicron variant of coronavirus, spooking financial markets and rattling the crude market in view of heightened worries about oil use. The result is that crude futures have recorded their biggest monthly declines since the outset of the pandemic, which means petroleum prices are at their lowest levels in 20 months. But the steep decline has not seen any proportionate reduction in the price of fuel for Indian consumers, who pay some of the biggest rates in the world for their consumption. This is despite the fact that the government has a so-called open market policy in place, under which market forces are supposed to determine the prices. Now, the hike in LPG prices comes like a bolt from the blue. The government has been committing fraud on the people and getting away with it, by blaming open market prices for high fuel prices and claiming that the prices are fixed by the oil marketing companies. In fact, the Modi government’s socalled free market oil policy is by far the biggest joke of the century. In any situation where market forces ar allowed free play, prices go up when conditions are in favour of suppliers just as the reverse is true when there is less demand and more supply. There is no other extraneous element involved in the price discovery of any product and much less in the case of oil, where even a change in perception can determine price behaviour. As opposed to this, in a regulated market, which used to be the case in India, until the UPA government decided to change that in favour of ‘free market’, the prices used to be regulated, with the government ensuring that these do not cross a level that is beyond the capacity of the people to pay by absorbing crude price increases through a system of subsidy or a cushion by drawing down from dedicated resources set up for the purpose. The new system was supposed to give the oil marketing companies the freedom to fix the selling price on the basis of the petroleum prices in the global market. This should have meant that when international prices go up, the domestic prices will correspondingly go up, but when the price movement in the reverse direction, consumers get the benefit of lower prices. India’s free market oil policy, however, has meant that when international prices go up, consumers have to necessarily pay more, but they don’t get any benefit of lower international prices because the government rigs the prices through a diabolical system of special taxes. This means that every price increase is an opportunity to make money, but a price fall presents itself with a bigger opportunity to make more money. And the government has a free market bogey to blame. It is time that this biggest institutional fraud by the government is challenged in the courts, which thankfully have been taking a more critical view of government’s omissions and - Kapilkumar M. ‘Personal ambition will help BJP’: Congress castigates Mamata Banerjee over ‘no UPA’ remark Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said that Mamata Banerjee’s strength has increased as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is behind her. Agency News:New Delhi Scores of Congress leaders on Thursday castigated Trinamool Congress supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over her remark that ‘no United Progressive Alliance left in the country’. They said that the political party that continues to think about its ‘gains and personal ambitions cannot’ take on BJP just by criticising Rahul Gandhi. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Leader of

Congress in Lok Sabha, said that Mamata’s strength has increased as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is behind her. Alleging that Mamata is helping the BJP, he said, “Does Mamata Banerjee not know what UPA is? She thinks entire India has started chanting ‘Mamata, Mamata’. But India doesn’t mean Bengal and Bengal alone doesn’t mean India. Her tactics in the last polls (in West Bengal) are slowly getting exposed.” He further alleged that TMC is in a

cahoot with the saffron party as both suits each other’s agenda. “The political game of communal polarisation played together by BJP & Mamata in WB is getting revealed. BJP changed its stance over NRC, it ended with polls. Showing the fear of the NRC they

Don’t think Congress will win 300 seats in 2024 general elections: Ghulam Nabi Azad Ghulam Nabi Azad said that he prays that Congress gets 300+ seats in the elections but he doesn’t see it happening in the next polls. Agency News: New Delhi Senior Congress leader and former Jammu & Kashmir CM Ghulam Nabi Azad has said that he does not see the grand old party winning 300 seats in the 2024 general elections to reverse the decision on Article 370. Addressing a rally in

Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch on Wednesday, the Congress leader noted that only the Supreme Court can reverse the decision on Article 370 or Congress has to come to power with 300 plus seats. Azad said that he prays that his party gets 300+ seats in the elections but he doesn’t see it happening in

the next polls. “Only Supreme Court can decide on Article 370 or the ruling government can do it. But how will they do it if they abrogated it? For revocation of this decision, Congress

needs the support of 300 plus MPs and under the current scenario, I don’t think that we will be able to grab 300 plus Lok Sabha seats in the 2024 elections. I wish, God willing, we could achieve this target, but the chances are bleak,” he said. The Modi government had abrogated Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019 and bifurcated it into two Union Territories -- Jammu and Kashmir division; and Ladakh division. The government has said that the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir.

Agency News: New Delhi After several Congress leaders expressed their displeasure over TMC chief Mamata Banerjee hinting at a united opposition minus Congress, political strategist Prashant Kishor on Thursday said that leadership of the Opposition should be decided democratically.

He also added that the Congress’ leadership is not the divine right of an individual. The criticism, apparently aimed at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, follows a similar jibe by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Mumbai on Wednesday. “The IDEA and SPACE that #Congress represents is vital for a strong opposition. But Congress’ leadership is not the DIVINE RIGHT of an individual especially, when the party has lost more than 90% elections in last 10 years. Let opposition leadership be decided Democratically,” Kishore wrote on Twitter. His remark sparked a sharp response from the Congress with party spokesperson Pawan Khera saying on Twitter, “The individual being discussed here is pursuing his Divine Duty to struggle and save Indian democracy from the RSS.
