City police today ordered an inquiry after it was found that a patient having infection in his legs was allegedly moved out of a government hospital here and thrown on the road by staff members. The inquiry was ordered by police commissioner Satish Sharma after CCTV footage of the incident that took place in October last year, went viral on social media.

Akali-BJP started wave of development: Sampla

Country eager for digital transactions: Javadekar Agency | Dehradun Union Minister Prakash Javadekar today claimed there are enough indications to show that people are “restless to go totally digital” and asserted that cashless system is a must to eliminate corruption. “The country is becoming more and more aspirational and forward looking under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In an atmosphere like this there is no question of demonetisation exercise not achieving its goals,” he said.

Stung by the arrest of TMC MP Sudip Bandopadhyay, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of using CBI, ED and Income Tax department against those who raised voice against demonetisation and dared him to arrest her and all TMC MPs. She asserted that their protest against note ban would continue. “I just can’t think that Sudip Bandopadhyay, who is our party’s leader in the Lok Sabha will be arrested. I also have information that Modi wants to arrest many other TMC leaders like Abhishek Banerjee, Sovan Chatterjee (city mayor) and Firhad Hakim (minister),” she told re-

porters immediately after Sudip’s arrest by the CBI in connection with the alleged Rose Valley chit fund scam. “I am shocked, but not scared. Let him arrest all of us. I openly challenge him to arrest me. Let me see his guts. He may silence others, but not me. He can’t suppress our voice. He can’t bulldoze people’s voice,” she said. “We will fight legal battle in every case,” she added. Earlier, at a meeting in Medinipur she charged Modi with using CBI, ED and IT against persons who protested against demonetisation. The TMC supremo also convened an emergency meeting on Sudip’s

Bandopadhyay, who arrived at the CBI office here at around 11 am, was subjected to more than four hours of intensive interrogation by CBI, after which he was arrested. The TMC MP had been summoned thrice earlier by the investigation agency. His arrest in the alleged Rose Valley scam came close on the heels of the arrest of another Trinamool Congress MP

in Lucknow to negotiate a truce formula. The meeting gave rise to another round of speculations: what could be the possible peace formula, how long does the latest agreement last and who in the family or outside could be made a sacrificial lamb. There aren’t many doubts that father Mulayam and son Akhilesh would ultimately stand united. After all, blood is thicker than water. It was Mulayam who had

decided to anoint Akhilesh as the chief minister of the most populous state of Indian union despite the fact that the latter didn’t have required maturity, age and experience to lead this politically critical state. All twists and turns and a noholds-barred family war played out in the public have led to the singular fact that Akhilesh has emerged stronger than he was six months ago. Whether it was by Mulayam’s design or otherwise, the fact remains that Akhilesh has his political inheritance to greater heights, irrespective of win or loss in coming elections.

UP Election 2017: Akhilesh Yadav-Ram Gopal Yadav bonhomie may not last long (H.S.) | New Delhi

In about an hour after Ram Gopal Yadav landed at the Election Commission office in New Delhi to claim that he and Akhilesh Yadav were the ones who commanded the Samajwadi Party and have the right to retain the party’s poll symbol, cycle, and persuade the EC to reject similar claims made by Mulayam Singh Yadav, another interesting development took place in Lucknow, again with some loaded implications for the pari-War and state politics. She alleged that Bandopadhyay was arrested due to “pressure from the PMO” and asked “why should Narendra Modi and Amit Shah not be arrested? “The party is behind Sudip. Bengaluru molestation: Blaming Abu Azmi serves no purpose; take cops to task instead

(H.S.) | New Delhi Why blame Abu Azmi? Obviously, he is not the only person in India who thinks women in skimpy clothes are aphrodisiac for the sex-starved Indian male. The list of items that can stimulate sexual desire in the men of our country is endless. From wearing lipstick to high-heeled footwear to eating chow mein to short dresses to sporting unusual hairstyles to using mobiles to moving in the company of anyone other than father or brother, anything that a woman does can excite men and inspire them to rape or molest her. With such a ready bouquet of justifications available for a sexually perverse

conduct, it is obvious women are unsafe everywhere. We have them getting sexually assaulted everywhere, from a public place in Bengaluru to crowded streets or secluded parks elsewhere. It does not surprise when people like Azmi find fault with women. He even compared women with sugar and fire and said it was natural that these items would attract ants and petrol. Not long ago a prominent political leader had brushed aside the sexual assaults on women saying “boys will be boys”. After the 31 December incident, Karanataka’s Home Minister G Parameshwara reportedly said “such things do happen”. The mind-

set is so pervasive and deeply entrenched that it’s pointless wasting time slamming their remarks. We have been at it for decades. But the problem has not gone away because mindsets don’t change easily. The worst part is, it has not helped the cause of women’s safety. They continue to face sexual assaults, cases of which are getting more brazen by the day. How does one explain the act of perverts at a public gathering in Bengaluru in the presence of 1,500 policemen? It is high time the point of public debate in this matter shifted from berating the mindset to practical steps to prevent such happenings. Once a victim is created, the psychological trauma she undergoes is immeasurable. The loss to her dignity and sense of self-worth is almost impossible to retrieve. Harsh punishment to a culprit in a rape case is fine, but it hardly is justice to the victim.

In his speech at an event to mark the end of his tenure, outgoing Chief Justice of India T S Thakur on Tuesday noted that the country cannot progress unless the judiciary is equipped to deal with the challenges that lie ahead. He went on to add that he would pray that the judiciary contin-

ues to remain fearless and doing what people expect it to. “I may be retiring but will keep praying for its prestige, from outside the sanctum sanctorum of Supreme Court,” Thakur said. It was during Thakur’s time as CJI that the government locked horns

with the judiciary over the appointment and elevation of judges. They are yet to arrive at a consensus on the Memorandum of Procedure dealing with the elevation of judges. Speaking at the same event, CJI-designate J S Khehar bid farwell to Thakur by calling him an “extraordinary man with extraordinary qualities”. “There were media reports J Thakur would be Vice-President

but he laughed it off. I said why Vice-President, why not President?” Khehar said. The outgoing CJI and CJI-designate were at their witty best. Thakur said that the “crowd is here to welcome you”, to which Khehar replied “no, they are here to bid farewell to a terrible CJI”. Khehar also said that “CJI Thakur has released perhaps the largest number of books; it should be some sort of record.”

Akhilesh Yadav needs SP cycle to change the poll narrative in UP If there is a single image of Akhilesh Yadav that holds a lasting memory, sometimes tinged with hope and sometimes with rueful nostalgia, it is one from the 2012 assembly elections campaign in Uttar Pradesh (UP). In it, Akhilesh, in a white kurta-pyjama, a red-and-white scarf and a red Samajwadi topi, is waving triumphantly while riding a bicycle. Next to him, the peloton is made up of hundreds of similarly clad Samajwadi Party workers. Akhilesh’s campaign rallies, in which he covered more than 250 kilometres on a cycle, were credited not just for his party’s resounding victory but also his eventual elevation as chief minister. Five years later, some new revelations have been unearthed about Akhilesh over the last few days. At a time when UP is gearing up for an election in the backdrop of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s demonetisation decision and a bitter family feud within the Samajwadi Party, the young chief minister has emerged more strong-willed and more politically savvy than pundits had thought he could ever be. Not only has he shown the fortitude to take on, and then take over, the extended Yadav pariwar, he has stood his ground against his father and party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav. In October, Akhilesh had beseeched Mulayam to allow him to use the sword he had handed him when he had given him the chief minister’s job. Last week, Akhilesh brandished it expertly, cutting down uncle Shivpal Yadav’s leadership ambitions and severing Amar Singh from the Samajwadi Party. What stood out after Mulayam took the hitherto-unthinkable step of expelling his own son from the party on December 30, was how quickly Akhilesh rallied the troops. The groundswell of support from party workers, and most importantly from almost 200 MLAs who parked themselves outside Akhilesh’s official Kalidas Marg residence in Lucknow, forced Mulayam to lay down arms. The manner of the takeover illustrated something Mulayam hadn’t comprehended – Akhilesh was not just well-liked, he was regarded as a better political bet by people who have their ears to the ground. It showed that the passing of the baton would not happen at a date and time of Mulayam’s choosing; Akhilesh had already snatched the baton and sprinted away. This decisive power shift from father to son has opened up a world of possibilities for UP. It has shown that the result of the upcoming assembly polls is not a foregone conclusion. The BJP, which won 71 out of 80 seats in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and was hoping to cash in on notebandi to further strengthen its claim, will have to put up with a stiff fight from the incumbent, particularly in the absence of a chief ministerial candidate who can compete with Akhilesh on the personality stakes. For the first time, a Yadav leader in UP will be heading to the 2017 election with the ability to create a larger coalition than the traditional backward-Muslim vote bank. There has been talk of Akhilesh’s willingness to join hands with Rahul Gandhi’s Congress and with Ajit Singh’s Rashtriya Lok Dal.

Paramilitary man arrested for hacking Kareena Kapoor’s IT account to get her mobile number

Agency | Mumbai The cyber police on Monday arrested a 26-yearold Central armed police employee who is a die hard fan of actress Kareena Kapoor for allegedly hacking her income tax account in September last year. The official who hails from a North Indian state has told the cyber police that he hacked her Income Tax

account so that he could get access to her mobile number using which he could talk to her. The accused would help his colleagues file their tax returns online and was well versed with the system. DCP Sachin Patil confirmed that a team from BKC Cyber police arrested the accused from another state and got him to Mumbai on Monday

afternoon. An officer said that they had been trying to track down the Internet Protocol (IP) address of the person who had hacked into the IT account. A team lead by assistant police inspector S Gaund found that the accused had used the mobile phone to hack into the account. “A mobile phone too has several IP addresses assigned to it. We had to figure out which phone had been allotted the IP address when the fraud took place,” an officer said. After sifting through a lot of data, the police narrowed down the mobile number used by the accused as the one using which her account had been hacked. “When our team questioned him on Sunday, he confessed to have illegally got onto the IT account of the actress using her PAN no that he found online,” the officer said. He added, ” The accused, a central government official, also files IT returns for colleagues. He knew that in most cases when IT returns are filed, one gets the mobile number of the person in the receipt.

Agency | Mumbai Banks, led by market leader State Bank of India, announced sharp cuts to their lending rates after a recent surge in deposits, raising hopes that lower borrowing costs will help spark credit growth in Asia’s third-largest economy. SBI, the country’s biggest lender by assets, said on Sunday it had cut its so-called marginal cost of funds-based lending rates (MCLR) by 90 basis points, while unveiling new products for mortgage loans, one of the fastest-growing areas. Several other lenders including Punjab National Bank, Union Bank of India, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Dena Bank also cut their lending rates by 45-90 basis points across tenures. Analysts expect more lenders to follow suit.

Bombay Stock Exchange Gets Sebi Nod To Launch IPO

Indian discus thrower Krishna Poonia turned into a real-life hero, when she hunted down an eve teaser in Churu, a small town in Rajasthan, on New Year’s Day. Poonia, who was waiting inside her car at a railway crossing, had spotted three young men harassing a couple of teenaged girls. The 39-year-old instantly jumped out of the car and made towards the three eve teasers. Realising the gravity of the situation, the three eve teasers instantly made a run for it, on a motorbike. However, Poonia, who had clinched a gold medal for India at

the 2010 Commonwealth Games, chased one of them down, hauling him off the saddle of the bike. “When I saw those two girls being harassed, I thought that they could well have been my daughters,” Poonia was quoted as saying in Said. “That made me go after the men.” After catching the eve teaser, Poonia rang-up the police, who arrived at the scene some time later. She also criticised the law enforcers for arriving at the scene late. “The police station was barely two minutes away from the

spot but it took the cops some time to reach and I had to phone them twice,” she said. “How will cops ensure women’s safety if they arrive late?” Poonia opined that society needs to take such things seriously, and not just play the dumb spectator when they see women being harassed. “The problem with our society is that there are not many people who would raise their voice and protest when they see a girl being harassed,” said Poonia. “Instead, they choose to stay mute spectators.”

The 20-yearold, initially circumspect where Warner was aggressive, was knocked to the floor by a sickening blow to his helmet grille from a Mohammad Amir bouncer on 91 but got up to complete his century from 201 balls with eight fours. When stumps were drawn, Renshaw was unbeaten on 167 with Peter Handscomb on 40 not out alongside him in a partnership of 121. Usman Khawaja (13), Warner and Australia skipper Steve Smith (24) all fell to catches behind the wickets, the last a spectacular take by Sarfraz Ahmed off spinner Yasir Shah.

World record set at Chennai Open for largest tennis lesson

Where North India shivers it out in the early parts of January and fog not helping matters to alleviate matters, the south – specifically Chennai – endures multiple emotions. On one side there is the sweltering heat and body-piercing sunshine of the afternoon, on the other side of the fence is the cool breeze that hits the metropolitan city in the evening. Neither, as it turns out, has affected the mood and dispelled the crowd at the Chennai Open. Where hundreds have been showing up for the qualifying matches

Vijay Rupani rules out possibility of early Gujarat Assembly polls

Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

Rubbishing speculations about the possibility of early Assembly polls in Gujarat, state Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Tueday said the polls would be held on schedule, during the later part of this year. Rupani also blamed Congress for spreading ‘rumours’

about early polls, which, according to him, is the opposition party’s strategy to keep their workers busy. “I do not see any possibility of early Assembly polls. I believe that elections will be held on schedule. This is just a rumour spread by Congress to keep their workers busy. Otherwise, I don’t

believe that polls will be held early,” Rupani told reporters in Ahmedabad after a function. Since the sudden change of guard in August last year, when Rupani took over the reins from Anandiben Patel, Gujarat Congress leaders have been claiming there is a possibility that elections in Gujarat may take place early. Gujarat Congress president Bharatsinh Solanki had on some occasions claimed that polls may be held early. He even asked the party cadres to gear up for early polls. “BJP will face severe defeat in UP and Punjab, where polls will be held in the mid of 2017.

However, the land measurement has stopped now and the dalits are

without land officially allotted to them. Similarly, we have discovered that a dalit co-operative in Dhandhuka taluka of Ahmedabad district was allotted 500 acre land in 1984 under the ALC Act. However, despite many representations by the office-bearers of the co-operative to the district collector to give possession of that land to them, nothing has been done and the same land remained in illegal possession of dominant caste people. And now, the state government has earmarked that land for the Dholera SIR.” Mevani said that these were a few cases of injustice to dalits and the picture is same across the state.

A 20-day long foot-march by farmers under the banner of Khedut Samaj Gujarat (KSG) concluded Monday near Tarapur village on the outskirts of the state capital after police stopped them from entering the city owing to preparations of Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit. One of the major demands raised by the farmers’ body was to waive off all loans to farmers and declare a date for disbursal of 100 per cent amount of crop insurance. It has also demanded that each farmer should get Rs 50,000 financial aid per acre.
