Children aged 12 to 17 years in India can now get the Serum Institute of India’s (SII) Covid-19 vaccine Covovax, pharma company’s SEO Adar Poonawalla announced on Tuesday. “Covovax (@Novavax), is now available for children in India. This is the only vaccine manufactured in India that is also sold in Europe and has an efficacy of > 90%,”

use in children in this age group. The National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (NTAGI) had recently recommended that Covovax be included in the government’s programme for children aged 12 and above. On Monday, news agency PTI reported that Covovax can now be available at private centres with a provision for it being made on the CoWIN portal.A dose of Covovax will cost ₹900 plus GST, in addition to hospital service charge of ₹150. Currently, children aged 12 to 14 years are vaccinated with Biological E’s intramuscular vaccine Corbevax, while those in the 15-18 age group are being administered.

No external credit can save Sri Lanka from its current deep financial crisis. The country issimply not in a position to repay its huge outstanding external loans — sovereign orcommercial. Tourism, tea and garments export and overseas employment are among its22.40-million strong population’s key sources of income. Foreign jobs contribute highly to thecountry’s external income. Almost 90 percent of expatriate Sri Lankan workers are WestAsia based. While unpaid commercial loans may at best be settled through attachment ofproperty with the help of law courts, there is no way to recover stricken sovereign debts. Thelatter are payable only when the country is able.When a country defaults, foreign lenders do not have any international court to go forrecovery. They cannot forcibly take over a country’s assets. Nor can they compel the countryto pay. Fresh sovereign credit to Sri Lanka stands the prospect of further financialmismanagement and misappropriation of funds by its rulers. Most Sri Lankans blame theRajapaksa brothers, Prime Minister Mahindra and President Gotabaya, for systematicallyruining the small island nation economy over the years. Millions of workers staged anation-wide crippling strike in Sri Lanka, last week, to pressurise the Rajapaksa family to exitthe government over the country’s worst-ever economic crisis. Inanother political drama, all 26 Sri Lanka’s cabinet ministers submitted letters of resignation. However, Sri Lanka’s president and prime minister expressed no such intention to quit thegovernment and go for a fresh election. Sovereign defaults are not entirely unusual. With efforts, many countries have come out ofsovereign debt defaults. Political instability and financial mismanagement have become increasingly frequent catalysts of sovereign defaults. They were regarded as the primary factor in defaults by Argentina in 2014 and 2019, Ukraine in 2015 and Ecuador in 2008 and2020. A recovery from debt default is not easy. Sovereign debt defaults can also imposewide and severe economic costs, lowering output for years after. Among the commoncauses of sovereign defaults are economic stagnation, political instability and financialmismanagement. Undemocratic and corrupt governments looting a country can eventuallyleave it without the means to service debt, leading to a default. Notably, Sri Lanka is facingthe most alarming level of external debt crisis in the South Asian region.Behind Sri Lanka’s current financial crisis is the Rajapaksa government’s deliberate bid toinvolve China in the country’s economic, financial and strategic expansion in pursuant of thefamily’s known anti-India rhetoric for years. China is the single biggest lender to Sri Lanka.The country needs around US$7 billion this year to service its debts to various creditors,especially those from China. The total debt service liability between now and 2026 isexpected to rise to $26 billion. This is too high compared to the country’s GDP, which is onlyaround $80 billion and shrinking day by day.Since 2007, Sri Lanka accumulated $11.8 billion worth of debts through sovereign bonds,making up the largest portion (36.4 percent) of its external - Kapilkumar M.
