The benchmark BSE Sensex cracked the 27,000-mark today by falling 351 points as investors trimmed positions in realty and FMCG stocks as hopes of another rate cut this year took a hit on fears of a drought in the country. Market took further jolt after services sector activity contracted for the first time in 13 months in May, largely due to decline in new order flows amid competitive pressure. In last two sessions, the Sensex has lost 1,011.79 points. The Met department has projected monsoon this year to be “deficient”, which has triggered fears of a drought.

The famous pilgrim place of Lord Shiva, the Somnath temple in Gujarat will now be off-limits for non-Hindus as authorities have decided against entry to people following other faiths without prior permission. Authorities cited security concerns and protection of ‘sanctity’ of a religious place for the restriction, saying other religions do not allow non-followers to enter their sacred places. “Shree Somnath Jyotirling is a pilgrimage for Hindus. Non-Hindus will have to obtain permission from general manager’s Office (of the temple) to enter the sacred pilgrim-place,” said a notice put up by temple authorities at the main entrance gate. The

Tin and nickle ease on reduced demand Agency | Mumbai, Jun 3

Tin and nickle prices eased at the non-ferrous metal market here today on selling by stockists amid reduced demand from alloy industries. While, copper and brass prices moved up due to good offtake from consuming industries. In overseas markets, London copper was trading flat in early trade ahead of options expiry later in the session, while traders bet on near-term downside, given spluttering global growth momentum.

notice was put up outside the main entrance-gate of the temple last Monday. Daily thousands of devotees from across the country visit the temple, which is very heavily protected by police. The famous Shiva temple, located near Veraval town of Gir-Somnath district, is governed by a trustee board headed

by former Gujarat chief minister Keshubhai Patel, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior BJP leader LK Advani are other trustees. “The decision was taken by the Somnath Trust’s secretary (PK Lahiri) two to three days ago and we put a notice accordingly,” Vijaysinh Chavda, dep-

uty manager of Somnath trust. When asked about reasons behind barring the entry of non-Hindus in the temple without taking permission, Chavda said the decision has been taken due to security reasons. Trustee secretary of Somanth Temple and former IAS officer PK Lahiri, “Notice was put up after

Maggi row: Clean chit from Maharashtra, Goa; no excess lead, says Kerala es of food safety standards Agency | New Delhi

Amid a row over alleged lapses in food safety standards of instant noodles Maggi, the Maharashtra government on Wednesday said there have been no negative reports about the samples tested so far. “We have taken some samples but we have not found any negative reports. I am in constant touch with Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner Harshadeep Kamble on the

issue,” food and civil supplies minister Girish Bapat on said Wednesday. He said that around 8-10 samples of Maggi have been tested by the government. “Their production is batch wise and to do a detailed analysis of their product, we need to test samples from different

batches, the work of which is going on. A problem can be identified once more such samples from other batches are tested,” Bapat said. He said that the government will take necessary action against Nestle if something is found amiss. The probe into alleged laps-

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Make-in-India” programme offered joint development and production of military technologies. While the two projects approved are modest in scale, India and the United States are also exploring collaboration at the higher end of technology, Carter told reporters. “We have big ambitions, and jet engines, aircraft carrier technology are big projects that we’re work-

ing very hard on,” he said. Carter is due to sign a new 10-year defence cooperation pact with his Indian counterpart Manohar Parikkar later on Wednesday that will include cooperation in maritime security, another official said. The two countries conduct annual naval exercises in the Indian Ocean where China has made forays in recent years in a sign of its expanding reach.

India, U.S. clear two ground-breaking defence projects as Carter holds talks Agency | New Delhi

India and the United States have sealed an agreement to jointly develop protective gear for soldiers against biological and chemical warfare, and another on building generators, defence officials said on Wednesday. The projects were cleared as U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter held talks with Indian leaders to expand security ties between the countries that were on opposite sides of the Cold War but have since drawn closer against the rising weight of China. The United States has become one of the top sources of weapons for the Indian military, upstaging Russia in recent years, and now under

has already been expanded to test Maggi noodle samples from across the country following detection of mono-sodium glutamate and lead in excess of the prescribed limit in the noodles.

other religions do not allow non-followers to enter their sacred places. “If you go to Parsi Agiyari, what they put outside on notice board is non-Parsis are not allowed inside. Can you enter Mecca city? Every religion has its right to regulate,” he said. In reply to a question about what action can be taken if somebody is found violating the ‘instruction’, Lahiri said, “Then it is a trespass, criminal trespass. If I enter Parsi Agiyari hiding my identity, it is criminal trespass.” Lahiri parried a query on whether the trustees (Modi, Advani) of the temple were informed about the decision, saying they have

carried forward Hindu tradition. “This is not a new decision. We have carried forward our tradition. It is part of our own Constitution that all Hindus will have a right to enter without any discrimination,” he said. Somnath temple has a unique place in Hinduism as history says that there were several desecrations by Muslim invaders from eleventh to eighteen century on the structure. However, after every attack, the temple was rebuilt. The present structure was built post Independence after a resolve by first home minister Sardar Patel and was inaugurated by first president Dr Rajendra Prasad on May 11, 1951.

ities are bound to scrutinize the Eastern Star’s safety record and that of its owner, Chongqing Eastern Shipping Corp., as they investigate why the ship capsized late Monday, leaving more 420 people unaccounted for. Police have detained the ship’s captain and chief engineer, who were among the few survivors. Chongqing Eastern Shipping is one of China’s oldest pleasure cruise

companies, struggling to compete with newcomers offering much fancier accommodations. For decades, the sunken Eastern Star, the Eastern Pearl and other “three-star” cruise ships have made the 1,100 mile (1,800-kilometer) journey from Chongqing, perched high above the Yangtze, past the craggy, scenic Three Gorges and their gargantuan dam, to Nanjing, way down in the swampy

lowlands. According to state media, Chongqing Eastern Shipping was founded in 1967 during the tumult of the 1966-76 Cultural Revolution as a state company handling river cargo transport from the upper reaches of the Yangtze to the sea. Since the early 1990s it also has run cruise ships, mostly relatively basic vessels with tiny cabins and toilets that double as shower stalls.

Capsized Yangtze Ship Cited Over Safety Problems 2 Years Ago

Agency | New Delhi Eastern Star, the cruise ship that capsized in the Yangtze river with more than 450 people aboard, was cited for safety violations two years ago, records from a Chinese maritime agency show. Authorities in Nanjing, where the Eastern Star began its unfortunate voyage, held the ship and five other Yangtze cruise vessels after it found them violating standards during a safety inspection campaign in 2013, according to a report on the city’s Maritime Safety website. The report provided only sketchy details. Among the dozens of violations it found among the vessels were practices such as failing to use the ship’s automated identification systems. It didn’t break down the violations by individual vessel or say who owned the other vessels. Author-

The Maggi betrayal has broken our good Indian heart

It won’t even take two minutes to figure out that lead in your Maggi is the least of India’s food safety problems. This is a country where two dozen children died in one fell swoop after their free lunch at school – rice, beans, potato curry and soy balls. India Today lets us know that much of that delicious street chaat Delhi is famous for could be contaminated with fecal matter, the E. Coli bacteria in particular. Where the Most Probably Number (MPN) of coliform bacteria should be 50 or less, it was as high as 2,400 in some of those delicious snacks. The “greatest lead-related scandal” is not about paint or Maggi but that “manufacturers of ayurvedic medications are permitted to use toxic heavy metals like lead, mercury, and arsenic” and he’s not buying the claim that the ayurvedic purification process of sodhana removes their toxicity. So why this kolaveri about two-minute noodles? It’s because Maggi was more than just a packet of instant noodles. In a socialist India where Coca Cola was forbidden and we wore rip-off Lavis jeans, Maggi in 1983 felt almost like cosmopolitanism in a packet. It was bright, it was perky, it was fast. It broke the rules of cooking. It was not labour intensive. Nothing needed to be chopped, ground or grated. It carried a whiff of independence. Anyone could do it. And it still had a masala flavour. There was an East-meets-West, home-meets-world feel about Maggi and its promise of instant gratification in our land of roti-chawal. That’s why as India opened up to the world, and many other kinds of instant foods and heat-and-serve horrors flooded the supermarkets, Maggi survived without even adding any new and exciting flavours. It was by then a classic. The brand had become the product – like Xerox and Google. Everyone had a Maggi memory – the schoolchild’s tiffin, the hostel student’s dinner, the newly-married working couple’s trusty stand-by. Unlike instant noodles in the US which was the epitome of the sad bachelor with a hot-plate, Maggi managed to sell itself in India as piping hot mother’s love. No wonder in the new India, Maggi has acquired what Firstpost’s Rajyasree Sen describes as a sort of “grunge cool” where once-cheap Maggi can cost Rs 300 and come with Arrabiata sauce or even drizzled with truffle oil and topped with pan-seared Foie gras. This, says Sen, is simply “nostalgia-themed food fancy-dress party.” Now it turns out that, forget fancy dress, the emperor has no clothes. The bad news keeps piling on. Lead. MSG. A temporary distribution halt in Kerala, a law suit in Uttar Pradesh, an FIR against its celebrity brand ambassadors in Bihar. The Future Group, the country’s biggest retailer has decided to stop stocking Maggi. Nestle claims its in-house tests and an independent laboratory have confirmed the product is “safe to eat” and lead levels are within “permissible” limits.

Watch: Acid attack survivor narrates her story, gets a makeover

Agency | Mumbai They say beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. And rightly so! Here we have Reshma Banoo Qureshi, an 18-year-old acid attack survivor, who defines beauty in her own way. For her, beauty is beyond having a pretty face and body. Blush, a YouTube channel, which shares beauty tips and fashion tricks, gave a makeover to Reshma, who narrated her horrific story while undergoing the change she wanted to

feel and see. The makers of this video recognize the inner beauty in each person, but they believe every girl loves a makeover once in a while. And hence, Reshma, who too wanted to undergo a makeover knew she would look prettier than Katrina Kaif. Reshma is certainly a beauty who has challenged all odds and stood up for herself bravely. One year after she was brutally attacked, she awaits justice as her attackers roam free.

certainly a helpful milestone,” said Mara Keisling, executive director of the National Center for Gender Equality, when asked about Jenner’s public coming out. “It’s really important to understand that there are about a million trans people in the country -we don’t know exactly -- and not everyone gets to tell their story” as the former Bruce Jenner has, she said.

3 / Dt. 04-06-2015, Thursday Phicomm Passion 660 review

Agency | New Delhi Chinese device maker Phicomm has entered the Indian market with the launch of its Passion 660 smartphone. It’s a subRs 12,000 device that comes with mid-range hardware including a fullHD display, Qualcomm’s 64-bit Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor and 2GB RAM. It’s worth noting that the Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 smartphone segment is already getting crowded and it will be tough for Phicomm to match up to rivals and offer a better experience. To differentiate its offering from others, the company has thrown in a barometer and dedicated pedometer feature. But will that be enough for the Passion 660 to be able to

compete with the likes of YU Yureka, Xiaomi Mi 4i and ZTE Nubia Z9 mini? We try to find out in our review. The Phicomm Passion 660 looks like any other rectangular slab out there with sharp corners and flat edges. However, once you get your hands on the phone, you’d surely be surprised by its light weight body (weighs just 110grams) and premium fit and finish. The right and left edges of the phone feature magnesium alloy with a brushed finish while the back has a matte look with a special powder coating which the company claims, is resistant to scratches. We found the claim to be true and also observed that it’s not very prone to smudges.

Indians finding it tough to stub out smoking. Here is why!

Agency | New Delhi 35-year-old Tejas visits AIIMS hospital in India’s national capital New Delhi almost every month for his mouth cancer treatment. He stands in a long queue and sometimes sleeps on the floor the previous night to be the first one in the line the following day. A rickshaw-puller by profession, Tejas has been chewing ‘gutka’ since time immemorial to him. He said a friend had asked him to try it out for fun sake in his early teens. He doesn’t remember when the ‘fun’ turned into a ‘habit’.

“It had become a time pass for me that you are chewing something and pulling the rickshaw. It became a habit and I could not do away with it. Last year I was diagnosed with mouth cancer and I had to completely stop it,” said Tejas as he bought medicines. Tejas is not alone. Like him, many people get addicted to smoking, chewing ‘gutka’ and other tobacco products are an early age. As India marked World Tobacco Day on May 31, people shared with us why it becomes difficult to stop.

Young solar system found around a nearby star Agency | Washington

Astronomers have discovered a young planetary system around a nearby Sun-like star that shares remarkable similarities to our own early solar system. An international team used the Gemini South telescope to capture images that show a ring-like disk of debris surrounding a Sun-like star, in a birth environment similar to the Sun’s. The disk appears to be sculpted by at least one unseen solar system-like planet, is roughly the same size as our solar system’s Kuiper Belt, and may contain dust and icy particles. The research provides a valuable key to understanding

the early formation of the Sun and planets. The discovery of the bright ring of orbiting the star HD 115600 changes everything, said Thayne Currie of the Subaru Telescope in Hawaii, who led the research. “It’s kind of like looking at our solar system when it was a toddler,” said Currie. The ring is almost exactly the same distance from its host star as the Kuiper Belt is from the Sun and it receives about the same amount of light. The star itself is just slightly more massive than the Sun and is a member of a massive grouping of 10- to 20-million-year-old stars called the Scorpius-Centaurus OB association.

Tendulkar features in Clarke’s list of top five cricketers

SPORTS ROUNDUP When set, Rohit Sharma is world’s most dangerous batsman: Virat Kohli

Agency | Melbourne Australian Test captain Michael Clarke considers legendary Sachin Tendulkar as one of the top five greatest cricketers he has played against during his international career. During an interaction with his fans on Twitter, Clarke revealed that Tendulkar is among five of the best players he played with or against

in his career. The other four names he took were Australian bowling greats Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath, South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis and West Indian Brian Lara. Clarke, who has retired from the ODI and T20 formats, is currently in the West Indies for a Test series against the hosts. Asked to name the quickest bowler he

has ever faced, Clarke took Pakistani maverick Shoaib Akhtar’s name. The 34-year-old, however, called England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff as the best bowler he padded up to. In lighter vein, Clarke was asked about the most untidy player in the Australian dressing room and he responded with his predecessor Ricky Ponting’s name.

Agency | New Delhi “I have never seen a guy, after he gets set, be so dangerous,” that’s how high Virat Kohli rates his India team-mate Rohit Sharma. Replying to a question on whether T20 cricket has changed batting, India’s new Test captain was quick to point at how success in the IPL has transformed Rohit’s game for the better. “He [Rohit] has scored two double-hundreds in ODIs opening the innings. Could you have imagined all these things without gaining confidence from T20 cricket, where guys keep hitting so consistently that they build confidence to do it throughout

50 overs?” Kohli replied during an interview to ESPNCricinfo. In India’s successful run-chases in ODIs, Kohli has already contributed 13 hundreds, which is only one behind Sachin Tendulkar’s 14. And Kohli, who captains Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League, credited his ODI success to T20s as well. “I have got the same confidence [as Rohit] from T20 cricket. Take that century off 52 balls against Australia in Jaipur, where we were chasing a huge target. I was so committed to playing positively, I did not have a second thought in my mind. No negatives. No doubts. And proper crick-

eting shots with conviction,” he said. Kohli, who will captain India in the one-off Test on Bangladesh tour starting June 10, then continued his praise for Rohit. “You take the best finishers in the game - [Kieron] Pollard, [James] Faulkner, [Eoin] Morgan - but when Rohit gets set, it is almost impossible to stop him. I mean, it is ridiculous the kind of hitting he does after getting 50. You know if Rohit Sharma is on 50 with four overs to go, you are in troubled waters. Literally, save yourself. I’m not joking.” The India No. 3 in limited-overs cricket then said that T20 cricket has changed the mental set-up of batsmen.

Why would fastest growing economy need rate cut boost? RBI beats hollow new GDP Agency | New Delhi

Raghuaram Rajan, the renowned economist, is known for his blunt views on world economic affairs, so is Raghuram Rajan, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor, who doesn’t bother whether the Delhi power centres agree with his views or not. Tuesday’s bi-monthly monetary policy and Rajan’s comments in the presser followed, left enough hints that the central bank has serious doubts on the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) numbers recently released by the Narendra Modi government. The new series of GDP numbers, based on Gross Value Added (GVA) method and a new base year, showed that the Indian economy grew 7.5 percent in January-March, beating China’s growth and, in effect, becoming

the world’s fastest growing major economy. For the full fiscal year 2015, the economy grew by 7.3 percent, the data from the central statistical office showed. But, as Firstpost argued in a recent article, even though the overall GDP growth numbers indeed point towards a nascent uptick in the economy, there are factors that question its accuracy in the backdrop of the actual situation on the ground. This include a sharp decline

in the GVA, declining capital formation in the economy, rising stress in the banking sector and, finally, a protruding disconnect between the GDP figure and the high frequency data such as bank credit growth, factory output and core sector performance. This disconnect confused everyone – economists and even the central bank – with respect to the sudden change in the shape of the economy based on the new data.

The nocturnal house will resemble the natural habitats of the animals and visitors will be able to see them through the glass barriers. “All the norms and recommendations of the CZA were taken into consideration while designing the house, including possibilities of separating animals as per their behavioural requirement,” Arya added. The night safari was initially proposed in 2005-’06. But,the CZA did not permit it. “The main reason for the cancellation of the night safari is that after midnight, the whole city becomes isolated.

12-year-old donates part of her prize money to CM fund

Sunvilla News | Gandhinagar

Twelve-year-old Mariyam Siddiqui, who hails from Mumbai and is the winner of Bhagwad Gita Champion League organised by International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in April, donated Rs 10,000 from her prize money to the Gujarat Mukhya Mantri Swachhata Nidhi. Siddiqui, a Class 6 student, met Chief Minister Anandiben Patel on Tuesday and donated the money in the form of a demand draft. She was accompanied by her father, Asif. The

donated amount is part of the fund Siddiqui has collected, following her win in the competition for reciting Gita slokas. While the prize money for the competition was Rs 5,001, Siddiqui has received cash prize from several quarters, which has crossed the mark of Rs 12 lakh, over the period of two months. This includes Rs 11 lakh from the UP government. Since her win, she has met a host of leaders, including President Pranab Mukherjee. Many of them have further rewarded her with

cash prize. “Mariyum was born and brought up at Shahpur in Ahmedabad. This is the reason that she wanted to donate part of her prize money to Gujarat,” said his father, who is an editor of political magazine Bartaman News, published from Mumbai. He added, “She just wanted to set an example for other children on how to be helpful to the society.” According to Asif, a large part of her prize money has been either donated or she has been planning to donate to children education.
