Reclaiming the No. 1 spot has not satiated Virat Kohli’s hunger for success and the Indian captain today said the team will at no point “take the foot off the pedal” as he set his sights on holding onto the numero uno status for a prolonged period. India dethroned arch-rivals Pakistan from the top of the ICC Test rankings with a 178-run win over New Zealand for an unassailable 2-0 lead, the victory coming on the back of a brilliant all-round performance. “I mentioned this before

(H.S.) | Chennai A senior journalist said on Monday Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa was out of danger and recovering amid a storm of rumours about the AIADMK chief’s health since she was hospitalized more than a week ago. Former editor of the Hindu, Malini Parthasarathy, told HT that a close associate had met Jayalalithaa and said that the CM was conscious.

“She’s required for the state and I’ve been her personal friend for long, I wish her all strength to recover soon,” Parthasarathy tweeted. Another source said Jayalalithaa had opened her eyes and was briefly taken off the ventilator. The Apollo Hospital in a statement late Sunday said Jayalalithaa was improving and responding well to the treatment. She was advised few more days of rest in hospital, it said.

Southwest Monsoon has officially come to an end but good rains have not taken a backseat from many parts of the country. Moreover, the western parts have been witnessing quite a few good spells of rain. The South Gujarat region is one of the places where good rains continue even after the end of the four month long Monsoon season. In fact, the region has received some good spells during the last 24 hours. In a span of 21 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday to 5:30 am on Monday, Surat received a good 34 mm of rainfall. Light rains

that over the past one-anda-half years. So we don’t go out there to prove anything to anyone. That we have a challenging win and we have to win because people are asking questions. We are doing our job, people are doing theirs. That’s how the balance goes. “It’s basically what you want to entertain and what you don’t want to entertain. As simple as that. But when we go on to the pitch we have control of what we can achieve. We understand our abilities. “We have enough belief in our abilities to play good cricket anywhere. Not putting pressure of winning on challenging wickets, but believing in

ourselves to execute our plans to the best of our abilities to execute.” Having completed a comprehensive 197-run victory on a turning Kanpur wicket, the conditions at the Eden were different. The relaid surface offered variable bounce as the Indian seamers took 12 wickets, including a fine five-wicket haul for Bhuvneshwar Kumar. “Obviously individual brilliance, one-odd game, someone will get a magnificent hundred in the fourth innings and win you the game. You’ll feel very happy but as a captain I think this win is far more satisfying than individual brilliance winning you a game.

Two persons died a tragic death this morning in Amroli area of Surat city when a tea-making machine in a tea shop suddenly blasted, police said. The machine in one Nilkanth Tea and Coldrink shop situated near Sudama Chowk suddenly blasted at around 6 am in the morning. The gas pressure in the electric run machine had suddenly increased leading to

the blast killing Mahavirsinh Pawar (48) and Kishor Pawar (45) on the spot. They had sustained lethal injury in their head and face by the pieces of stone made platform on which the machine was kept, police said. The deceased were workers employed by the tea stall owner and used to live in the shop itself. They were said to be residents of Ujjain in neighbouring Madhya Pradesh.

September 6 when it had climbed 445.91. The gauge had gained 38.43 points in the previous volatile session on Friday. The broader NSE Nifty retook the 8,700 level to end at 8,738.10 by surging 126.95 points, or 1.47 per cent, after moving between 8,745.20 and 8,635. “The market rebounded as investors expect a positive futuristic view from the new RBI monetary policy

committee tomorrow even though consensus points to a hold in key rates,” said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit BNP Paribas Financial Services. Auto stocks, led by Maruti Suzuki, were in the driver’s seat. The country’s largest car maker came out on tops, surging by over 3.70 per cent, after it posted over 31 per cent growth in passenger vehicle sales in September. Hero MotoCorp (up 3.18 per cent), M&M (2.64 per cent), Bajaj Auto (1.52 per cent) and Tata Motors (1.11 per cent) were in a sweet spot too. As many as 28 components of the 30-share Sensex pack ran up while TCS and Infosys finished lower.

Tea making machine blasts in Surat, two dead were also recorded in other areas which included Rajkot 4 mm and Vadodara 1 mm. These rains can be attributed to the cyclonic circulation over Marathwada region and adjoining areas. Due to thus, moisture incursion has increased over the South Gujarat resulting in cloud development

over the area. During the next 24 to 48 hours, the system is expected to move closer to South Gujarat region. Thus, the next 24 to 48 hours are expected to bring in good rains for the South Gujarat region. So much so that a few areas may even witness some heavy rains during this period.

Sensex rallies 377 points, all eyes Katara murder: SC gives 25-yearshift to RBI meet on Tuesday jail term to Vikas, Vishal (H.S.) | Mumbai

(H.S.) | NEW DELHI

Supreme Court today awarded 25- year jail term each to Vikas Yadav and cousin Vishal Yadav for their role in the kidnapping and killing of Nitish Katara in 2002. A bench comprising Justices Dipak Misra and C Nagappan also handed down a 20-year jail sentence to their co-convict Sukhdev Pehalwan in the case. The bench modified the Delhi high court verdict that had said that seperate jail terms of 25-years and 5-years for the offences of murder and destruction of evidence would run consecutively against Vikas and Vishal. The court said both the jail terms

would run concurrently that would effectively lead to the award of 25 years of imprisonment to the Yadavs. Simultaneously, Pehalwan, who was granted 25-year jail term in the case by the high court, will now have to face 20-year imprisonment in the matter. The

order came on the appeals filed by Vikas and Vishal against the Delhi high court order which had enhanced the life term to 25 years in jail without remission and an additional five years for destruction of evidence in the case, terming Katara’s murder as “honour killing”.

Market turned more decisive as the Sensex today jumped over 377 points — its biggest single-day gain in about a month — and the NSE Nifty scaled the 8,700 mark in anticipation of a rate reduction at the RBI policy meet on Tuesday. Improving sales numbers from automakers, a sign of revival in discretionary spending, the rupee holding higher against the dollar and no further flare-up on the geopolitical front added fuel to the rally. A rebound globally on easing worries about future of German giant Deutsche Bank and a firming oil price provided a perfect setting. Senti-

ment was buoyed after a monthly survey showed that the manufacturing PMI print for September, at 52.1, came in above the 50 mark for the ninth month, signalling expansion. The 30-share BSE barometer after opening higher hit a high of 28,273.02 before settling at 28,243.29, a significant jump of 377.33 points, or 1.35 per cent, its biggest single-session rally since

‘Pink’ has given voice to a generation of women

India cannot become the third largest economy by bypassing women workers. In a 2012 document on gender diversity in India’s workforce, Catalyst, a non-profit with a mission to expand opportunities for women and business, predicted that there will be a shortage of 750,000 skilled workers over the next five years. “Because of the projected annual GDP growth of 7 percent and this projected talent gap, it is essential for companies to engage a key component of economic growth— the skills and talents of women,” the report suggested. The news is far from positive: A survey by ProEves, a gender diversity consulting firm, reveals that woman participation in India Inc is fixed at less than 20% for the past three years. Compared to the US, India is at half the women participation across all employee groups. India ranks 127th on the gender inequality index and 108th on the global gender gap index. The reasons for such low participation of women in the workforce are well known: Discrepancy in policies and implementation (the survey shows that 61% of the companies have a stated goal on diversity but only a third have a number target and have no target association on inclusion for leaders), lack of flexible policies and the larger issues of child care support system, commuting, infrastructure, safety concerns, education and training. Data also suggests that women in India are largely employed in the informal, semi- or unskilled sector such as domestic work, where incomes are low and there are limited benefits or job security. According to the ILO, in 2011-12, while 62.8% of women were employed in the agriculture sector, only 20% were employed in industry and 17% in the services sectors. A recent McKinsey report shows why it is important to bridge this gender gap: The country stands to gain as much as $2.9 trillion of additional annual GDP in 2050. Along with education, bringing more women into the workforce also has a critical spin-off benefit: It will address the problems of patriarchy, gender discrimination and violence. If the country is to become the world’s third largest economy in 2030, it can’t afford to bypass its women from equal opportunity in the workforce. Here’s what can ensure this diversity: More effective measures such as greater investments in secondary and tertiary education, vocational and skills training, and developing and strengthening laws and policies to support working women. I didn’t really know what my room-mate meant when she texted me saying “bhai, ‘Pink’ kya movie hai!” Yes, I had been intrigued by the trailer — the fact that it was produced by Shoojit Sircar and the ongoing appraisals of the film all over my newsfeed on Facebook — but nothing had driven me to actually watch it till my room-mate’s text. Slowly getting used to the arrangement of sharing an apartment with three other people and being there for each other in our little ways, maybe I have started trusting her judgement. She wanted to watch it again and we decided that I would accompany her on the following day for the morning show — the one with cheaper tickets than other times of the day. I knew there was going to be something unusual about the film when it began with silent credits — one could feel that the silence on the screen was a prelude to a thunderstorm.

The actor was speaking about a call to ban Pakistani actors in the aftermath of Uri attack in which 18 soldiers were killed. Nana Patekar said that matter of Pakistani actors working in India is mere trifle when it comes to country. “I don’t know anything else

other than my country. An artiste is very small in front of a country. As artistes, we don’t have value when it comes to country,” said Patekar during an interaction with the media on Sunday. Please don’t pay attention to what we say.” Patekar didn’t take any names of those who have different opinions. However, he said, ” I am talking about those people only. They don’t have the status to comment on these issues.” Salman Khan had earlier said “They (Pakistani Actors) are artists, not terrorists. It’s the government who gives them work permits and visas. Art and terrorism should not be mixed.” Giving a backlash, the Shiv Sena on Saturday said that Salman too should migrate to Pakistan if he likes the Pakistani actors so much.

(H.S.) | New Delhi It will be a homecoming of sorts for India midfielder Arata Izumi when he starts his journey with his new team – FC Pune City – in the third season of the Indian Super League (ISL) on Monday. The half-Japanese, half-Indian footballer was a revelation for Atletico de Kolkata (ATK) last season, and he played a big role in taking his team to the semi-finals. His five

goals in 11 appearances saw him finish eighth on the overall scoring chart and third among the Indians, behind Mumbai City FC’s Sunil Chhetri (seven goals) and Chennaiyin FC’s Jeje Lalpekhlua (six goals). However, he was not retained by ATK at the end of the season and the 34-year-old is making a return to the city where he has spent the majority of his club career, playing for Pune FC in the I-League. Izu-

mi was one of the most celebrated footballers of the now disbanded Pune FC and the fans will surely be excited to have him back in the city. Talking about his new team, Izumi said, “We have a fabulous mix of players and we are determined to give our 100% for the club. The coach and support staff are ensuring that our intents are matched with solid efforts from their side.” The footballer was born in Yamaguchi, Japan, to an Indian father and a Japanese mother, but it was not before 2006 that he first came to India. After playing for Albirex Niigata, Singapore FC and the Mitsubishi Mizushima FC in Japan, he joined East Bengal in 2006, starting a journey which made him the first foreign-born player to represent India in an international match.

A look at Medicine Nobel winner and his research

India may have to pull out of next year’s Champions Trophy in England if the BCCI implements Justice RM Lodha Committee recommendations in toto, Board president Anurag Thakur warned on Monday. As per the reforms suggested by the Lodha Panel, there has to be a 15-day window before and after the IPL. The Champions Trophy is scheduled from June 1-18 while IPL is likely to end in last week of May. “I don’t know whether India will be able to play Champions Trophy or not. If you go by the Lodha Committee report you have to play either the IPL or the Champions Trophy. So BCCI has to take a call on that,” Thakur said. “There is Australia series before IPL and Champions Trophy after it. So BCCI has to take a call whether they will play IPL or Champions Trophy — you have to pick one of the two if the

Lodha Committee recommendations are implemented in toto,” he said to a query that India were insisting to be placed in different group than Pakistan amid rising political tensions. “The question of India-Pakistan arises only if India plays Champions Trophy.” On whether the IPL could be scheduled differently, he said: “You tell me how you can do it. I will give you the window.” Insisting that it would be a problem every year, he said,” You have certain months to play in India. There is a window made available for IPL so you have to take a call whether the world’s fastest growing league, which has showcased to the

world how you can make domestic cricket more popular, and give birth to many other leagues like football, hockey, badminton, kabaddi and all that – whether that has to go.” Thakur also said BCCI has undergone huge reforms in the recent past. “If you look at the BCCI, it is open about reforms. In the last 18 months, I first appointed Cricket Advisory Committee, hiring greats like Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly. Selection of the coaches, Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble and appointment of CEO and CFOs. We have taken various steps in the last 18 months, there’s a huge list.”

the death of Tests, then one day it will happen,” said Kumble, the leading wicket-taker of the country, at a star-studded event graced by legendary players like Bishan Singh Bedi, V.V.S. Laxman, and Virender Sehwag. Laxman said some steps should be taken to

make Tests popular again. “The BCCI is giving Test cricket importance and trying to popularise it by taking it to smaller towns. It should be a day out for families to be popular. “If you ask any youngster, he wants to watch and play T20 cricket. They want instant results. But they also want to see icons and once they see them in Test matches, I am sure there will be a clamour for the longer version of the game which has a great digital market.” Sehwag made a valid point when he appealed for preserving the current format. “The BCCI is doing a fantastic job of taking Test cricket to smaller venues.

Mr. Ohsumi is being recognized for groundbreaking experiments in the 1990s dealing with autophagy, the “self-eating” process that lets a cell break down and recycle some of its contents, which rapidly provides fuel and building blocks. Breakdowns in the autophagy process have been linked to a number of grave diseases including Parkinson’s, diabetes and cancer. The Karolinska Institute said researchers had known about autophagy (aw-TAH’-fuh-jee) for half a century, but its wide-ranging significance was only made clear by Ohsumi’s experiments. It is common for Nobel judges to honor people for discoveries that were actually made years or decades earlier to assure that the research was valid and its importance borne out over time.

With two goals in the space of four minutes, it looked like that the Chennaiyin would tame the ATK at the latter’s den but somehow the home side found the equaliser with a penalty coming in their way which Hume converted. ed to the spot and Hume stepped up to convert the penalty. The keeper dived to the right side but failed to get enough behind the ball to make the save. ATK were the better side with more possession and more shots at the opposition goal but their forwards, including marquee player Helder Postiga and Hume himself, were unable to find the Chennaiyin net.

Founder and Global Chairman of World Hindu Economic Forum (WHEF) Swami Vigyananand today said that the Vedic Sanatana Dharma has the key for global peace, wealth and prosperity and It is the time to go to the roots of Sanatan Dharma and apply it to day to day life to find and apt solution to the current problems of the world economy. Delivering the key not speech on ‘Making Society Prosperous’ organized by Laghu Udyog Bharti, Gujarat, Swami Vigyananand said “Today, while some economies are passing through a turbulent phase, many emerging economies are providing us great op-

portunities. The issue is how to leverage the global situation for collective growth. He said “The Economic boom of previous two decades followed by a recession of major economies has placed the entire world into turmoil. The responses to these challenges are complex and need to be addressed outside the current institutional framework and mindsets. The world economic leadership is only researching and acting according to traditional wisdom, i.e. cost-cutting and protectionism. The endeavors designed for relative stability do not work in adverse times. It requires a new and creative response, which can propel creation of surplus

Wind energy solutions provider Inox Wind Monday said it has bagged cumulative orders worth over Rs 2,000 crore for the supply and installation of wind turbine generators of 350 megawatt (MW). In a BSE filing, Inox Wind said that it has got “new orders for the supply and installation of wind turbine generators of 350 MW in total to several repeat customers. The orders cumulatively are worth more than Rs. 2,000 crore”. It further said: “The repeat orders from some of the nation’s

leading independent power producers and corporates further cement Inox Wind’s leadership position in the Indian wind market”. The projects will be executed on turnkey basis across locations in Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. The contracts include supply and commissioning of the wind turbines as well as multi year operations and maintenance agreements. The orders are expected to be commissioned by March 2017. Shares of Inox Wind were trading 3.70 per cent higher at Rs 207.35 on BSE.

per cent objective and 75 per cent subjective to 100 per cent Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), the GSHSEB has already initiated brainstorming sessions with the minister and board members on its implementation. A decision on this is expected next week. Chudasama said, “A meeting on this matter is scheduled this week where a final decision would be taken.” The parents have claimed that this change is “essential for students appearing in NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) in 2017”. The representation sub-

mitted demands, “As per the circular issued by the Gujarat Board, Class XI and XII exam pattern will be 75 per cent subjective and 25 per cent objective. This is not compatible with the NEET pattern. Because of this, students are facing difficulty in preparing for NEET exams. Thus, we demand to change the examination pattern to NEET’s; 100 per cent MCQ.” However, it is to be noted that a section of educationists have raised concerns over this change, if implemented. For the reason that even prior to the introduction of semester system in the academic year 2011-12, the annual examination pattern being followed for decades had subjective questions. Even in those years, students would appear for entrance examinations like AIEEE and AIPMT which were OMR based.

and Justice Paradeepsinh Jadeja, who was present on the occasion, to reduce the pendency of land acquisition cases. “In land acquisition cases, the interest needed to be paid out with compensation is sometimes 15 per cent… So, litigants will get 15 per cent interest which no bank is giving. Maximum is 10 per cent interest on deposits. If the matter remains pending for 10 years, 115 per cent interest will have to be

paid by the government from the exchequer. So, I request the honourable minister also to concentrate on these areas, give suitable instructions to land acquisition officers and collectors of the state for ensuring expeditious disposal of such cases,” the CJ said, while addressing judges and members of Morbi and Rajkot bar associations after inaugurating the Morbi district and sessions court.

wealth to rescue the world economy from its current crisis.” Swami Vigyananand said “The basic problems of the world today are hunger, poverty and illiteracy. These problems cannot be solved just by donations and charity. A growing population has growing needs, and these can be overcome only by creating surplus wealth and sharing this wealth to empower the masses, i.e. those at the bottom of the pyramid. WHEF is that step towards creating “That, which sustains” and eradicating hunger, poverty and illiteracy in the world.” On this occasion Mr. Hitendra Joshi, President and Mr. Prakash Patel, Secretary, Laghu Udyog Bharati briefed about the activities carried out by LUB, Gujarat. the spontaneous stone pelting began when a Tazia procession was passing through the area. We are examining if this procession had sought police permission. If not, they will be booked for violating notifications. The city is peaceful as the police has brought the situation under control. It was not an adverse incident but a minor clash. We are analyzing the CCTV footage to identify the miscreants.”

Following the public flogging of Dalits in Una by alleged gau rakshaks for skinning a dead cow that resulted in a large-scale Dalit agitation in Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had advocated to invoke powers of saintly people to heal wounds of Dalits. Gujarat Governor O P Kohli said at a public function at Raj Bhavan here Sunday. The function was organised to release a book — Mahatma Gandhi to Modi — co-authored by intellectual property lawyer Rajeshkumar Acharya and former bureaucrat Girishchandra

Tanna. The book is about how Modi and his developmental and ideological work is influenced by Mahatma Gandhi, Swami Vivekanand and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Speaking on the occasion, Kohli referred to Dalits and said that Gandhi had ‘natural affection’ for them. Following this, he immediately referred to the Una episode. Kohli said that when he had gone to Delhi after the Una episode, he had a discussion on it with Modi.

Kejriwal ‘salutes’ Modi for surgical strikes (H.S.) | New Delhi

In a rare gesture, Delhi Chief Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday “saluted” Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the surgical strikes by the Army on terror launch pads across the Line of Control (LoC) and urged the Centre to counter Pakistan’s smear campaign on international stage. Mr. Kejriwal, who is often at loggerheads with the Centre, said he may have differences with the Prime Minister over several issues, but by undertaking the surgical strikes, Mr. Modi has shown the will to deal with Pakistan. “Last week our Army showed valour and avenged the deaths of 19

soldiers killed in the Uri attack. I may have differences with the Prime Minister over a 100 issues. But when he has shown the will (to deal with this matter), I salute him,” he said. This is perhaps the first time that Mr. Kejriwal, who has been critical about the Modi government and its Paki-

stan policy, has come out praising him. On the day of the strikes, the Delhi Chief Minister had hailed the Army, but there was no word of praise for Mr. Modi. A day later, he had told the Delhi Assembly that is time to stand with the Centre and the differences between them can be sorted out later.
