But six months on, a prominent Nepali daily says that the “loss that Nepal incurred following [the] blockade by India now equals that caused by the earthquake”. The promulgation of the new constitution on September 20 was not to India’s liking. PM Modi’s special emissary, foreign secretary S. Jaishankar, wanted Madhesi demands to be addressed first. But apart from problems with India, issues emerging at home are likely to pose challenges for the government. Speculation about the regime’s longevity, and of the constitution itself, is at its peak. Despite the same faction within the UML grabbing both the PM’s and president’s posts, the party has not been able to name its ministers yet. The other key posts — the speaker of the House and the vice president — have gone to the Maoists. The Nepali Congress, the largest party, is in the opposition and its support will be critical for amending the constitution and passing any major legislation. Moreover, the Marxist and Maoist government has another odd ally — the pro-monarchy Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal, whose chief Kamal Thapa is deputy PM and in charge of foreign affairs. The Madhesi parties have threatened to intensify their agitation against the constitution. Ex-king Gyanendra, who cancelled his customary annual tika ceremony (greeting and blessing the people) because of the prevailing hardships, chose to question the constitution by saying that “it has not been endorsed by the people”. Shaherkotda police solved the case of the murders a woman and a youth in a basement parking on Naroda Road with the arrest of three youths. Investigators said that the trio -addicted to charas -had got into a tiff and killed the youth. As the woman had seen them commit the crime, they killed her too. HC enables Godhra victim’s family to claim compensation
More than 13 years after the incident, a family of the victim of the Godhra carnage will be able to claim compensation from the Railways. This is after Gujarat high court ordered the Railway Claims Tribunal (RCT) to condone the delay in demanding compensation. The case in question was of Amrutbhai Patel from Mehsana, who was killed on February 27, 2002 while traveling in the S-6 coach of Sabarmati Express near Godhra railway station. Fifty-nine persons lost their lives in the grotesque incident. Since the entire bogey was set ablaze, many dead bodies were unidentifiable. DNA tests established their identities, but a considerable time passed in the process. When Patel’s identity
was ascertained, the government paid Rs 1.5 lakh ex-gratia amount to the family on May 27, 2002. To demand compensation from the Railways for accidental death, the family asked for a DNA report, but the request was turned down. Moreover, the family did not get death certificate either. Finally, Patel’s widow Lilaben and their children approached a court for the declaration of Patel’s death. Upon the court’s order, Sola Gram Panchayat issued a death certificate on January 13, 2005. But it was too late for the RCT, which sat on the Rs 4 lakh compensation claim petition for the next seven years. By then, most of the families affected by the Godhra train burning accident had got compensation of Rs 4 lakh, said the family’s lawyer, Deepak Shukla.

The Gujarat police are now probing the possible involvement of Patidar outfits in the series of letters warning of bomb explosions across the state since a month. The bomb disposal squads, especially in Vadodara, are running from one place to another almost daily , after getting letters threatening blasts at schools, temples, trains, colleges, bus depots and railway stations. All have been hoaxes. What’s more, letters have been sent in the names of terror outfits like Indian Mujahideen, al-Qaeda and Jehad Atankavad, leaving the cops rattled. Private firms in Gujarat are assisting Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in developing technology for a “manned mission” in space. While a firm in Vadodara is designing space-suits for Indian astronauts, a couple of others in Ahmedabad are developing sensors and lighting systems needed for the mission. “The space-suits have been done in Vadodara by a private firm.
