Omicron impact may be less Jagdish Thakor appointed Gujarat Congress president severe due to vaccination, Delta exposure: Govt It however underscored that definitive evidence for new variant’s increased remission and immune evasion is awaited

Agency News:New Delhi The Union Health Ministry on Friday said while there is no evidence to suggest that existing vaccines do not work on the Omicron variant of SARSCoV-2, some of the mutations reported may decrease the efficacy of the jabs.It however underscored that definitive evidence for new variant’s increased remission and immune evasion is awaited. The ministry has issued a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) about the Omicron variant of coronavirus which has been designated by WHO as a ‘variant of concern’ (VoC). Two cases of the new variant were reported in Karnataka on Thursday. From the list of FAQs, the ministry, answering to whether the existing vaccines work against the Omicron variant, said, “While, there is no evidence to suggest that existing vaccines do not work on Omicron, some of

the mutations reported on spike gene may decrease the efficacy of existing vaccines.”However, vaccine protection is also by antibodies as well as by cellular immunity, which is expected to be relatively better preserved. Hence, vaccines are expected to still offer protection against severe disease and vaccination is crucial. If eligible one should get vaccinated, it said. On the possibility of a third wave of Covid infection, the ministry said Omicron cases are increasingly being reported from countries outside of South Africa and given its characteristics, it is likely to spread to more countries, including India. However, the scale and magnitude of the rise in cases and the severity of the disease are still not clear, it said. “Further, given the fast pace of vaccination in India and high exposure to delta variant as evidenced by high seropositivity, the severity of the disease is anticipated to be low.

Cyclone Jawad forms in Bay of Bengal, to travel along Andhra-Odisha coast on Saturday Cyclone Jawad: Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General, India Meteorological Department (IMD), Friday said the cyclone would come closest to land near Puri district around noon on Sunday. Agency News:New Delhi Cyclone Jawad formed in the Bay of Bengal around noon on Friday, and is expected to travel along the Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts on Saturday before reaching Puri district on Sunday morning, the closest it will get to land. This is the third cyclone after Yaas and

Gulab to reach Odisha in 2021. Presently, squally winds with speeds between 60 to 70 kmph are prevailing along these coastal states. Jawad, which had intensified into a deep depression on Friday morning, rapidly strengthened into a cyclonic storm by noon. As per the latest satellite observations, it was located 420 km south-southeast

However, scientific evidence is still evolving,” the Health Ministry said. To a question on can the currently used diagnostics methods detect Omicron, it said that the most accepted and commonly used method of diagnostic for SARS-CoV2 is the RT-PCR method. “This method detects specific genes in the virus, such as Spike (S), Enveloped (E) and Nucleocapsid (N) etc to confirm the presence of the virus. However, in the case of Omicron, as the S gene is heavily mutated, some of the primers may lead to results indicating the absence of the S gene (called S gene drop out).

A consortium of 28 laboratories to monitor genomic variations in coronavirus has recommended the centre to consider COVID-19 booster dose for those who are 40 years and older amid the threat of Omicron, a new variant of concern. India has reported two cases of Omicron infection. “Vaccination of all remaining unvaccinated atrisk people and consideration of a booster dose for those 40 years of age and over, first targeting the most high-risk and high-

exposure may be considered, since low levels of neutralising antibodies from current vaccines are unlikely to be sufficient to neutralise Omicron, although risk of severe disease is still likely to be reduced,” INSACOG said in its weekly bulletin. Global Economic Recovery From Covid Crisis At Risk

Waves of new variants of the old accursed pandemic is bad news for the health of the planet. On top, the economic disruptions that these have been creating is a double whammy. The only silver lining is that people learn fast to tackle new situations, however difficult these are As a South African doctor conclusively proved the infection by a still more infectious variant of the old covid-19 virus, it sent a shiver down the spines. All countries woke up to the possibilities of another round of mass sickness, overcrowded hospitals, shortages of essential medicines and medical services and then fresh lock downs. Several countries have already imposed fresh travel restrictions. Japan for one has been supercharged and has reportedly stopped all international flights coming. Some European countries are doing so, amidst already spiking covid infection rates. China, the country which had let loose this horrible plight on the world, has been pursuing its crude policy of zero-tolerance to covid infection. Brazil has been another weak spot, with large incidence of infection, omicron or no omicron. The doctors are already saying that although the virus mutant is far more infectious than the earlier Delta one, it has so far proved to be less fatal. The symptoms of the omicron variety are much milder and do not immediately require hospitalisation. However, this still called for medical attention and treatment, particularly to isolate and spot its spread. And there lies the cache. If controlling the spread of the omicron variety of covid needs still more vicious isolation and lock down, then this is surely going to affect the global economic recovery now under way. The IMF had forecast comfortable economic recovery before the news of the omicron spread. Now, after its emergence and rapid spread, these would have to be reviewed. Already, global financial markets have reacted to the news of the new variant and its typical nature. Markets have fallen sharply and these are still waiting for further details. As more and more news appear about the omicron variety, the financial markets would surely react. By itself, this will leave dents on countries, depending on their other strengths or weaknesses. This is not unknown. Immediately after the global financial melt-down in 2008 and subsequent disruptions, the economies had gone into a tail spin. As the US economic authorities had responded to the evolving scenario, these further left collateral damages. Recall what had happened on the news of tapering of bond purchases by the US Federal Reserve which had buoyed up the sentiments on the financial markets and kept the interest rates low. News of the Fed cutting down bond purchases drove their yield up and financial flows to the emerging market economies plummeted. The exchange rates of most of the countries nosedived and they had faced a new crisis. Based on the impact of the US tapering, the larger emerging market economies had immediate turned into a new grade —the Frail Five— which experienced sharp drop in their exchange rates, domestic financial uncertainties and the fresh dip in economic activity. A kind of financial market instability following severe omicron spread and fresh lock-downs could once again give rise to uncertainties. This would of course depend on their current economic strength. However, it is possible to anticipate that those already facing high inflation (and some are), having smaller kitty of foreign exchange reserves, exposure to short-term loans and dependence on exports to China or US, will face possible inflection points. The risks of public health and hygiene apart, the downside risks now emerge from what two major economic powers would be doing. Both China and the United States are the engines of the global economy and their domestic economic policies will influence what happens to others. There are two principal threats now. The first is that China is slowing down and a slower China poses threat to a host of countries with numerous related risks. The second is the monetary policy stance of the US Federal Reserve and the rippling financial woes these could inflicts across the world. China first. In itself, these Chinese economic trends are posing a serious problem for the global economy. Real estate is estimated to constitute close to 30% of the Chinese GDP according to some very conservative calculations by well-down China expert Kenneth Rogoff. The trouble of the real estate behemoth, Evergrande, which owned over $300 billion - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara in loans to various.

An aggrieved Supreme Court on Friday clarified that the decision to shut down schools in Delhi over the air quality crisis was not entirely on its initiative. The court - hearing a long-running argument over controlling, if not eliminating, the clouds of toxic air that smother the national capital every winter suggestions on closures of various

institutions had come from the Delhi government in its affidavits and the court had only pointed out schools were open (and children exposed to poisonous air) while adults had the option of working from home. Chief Justice NV Ramana, heading the three-judge bench in this matter, appeared upset at some newspaper reports on yesterday’s hearings that said the court had pressed for the closure of schools.

The recommended (minimum) interval between two doses of Covishield (India’s version of the OxfordAstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine) was four to six weeks when vaccinations began in January. This was subsequently increased to six to eight weeks and, in May, extended again to 12 to 16 weeks. The centre’s rationale at the time was “real life evidence from the UK” regarding the vaccine’s efficacy. The gap for Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin has remained unchanged. The earlier order, which also directed the centre to modify the CoWIN app to allow for reduced interval, was after a petition by two clothing companies.

Junior hockey World Cup: Germany’s half-court press could get tricky; but India have the surprise up their sleevea Agency News: New Delhi After surviving a wave of Belgian attacks through some stubborn defending, India will take on an opponent, Germany, in the Junior World Cup semifinal that is diametrically opposite, both in terms of style and mentality Unlike Belgium, who played zonal, which gave India a chance to intercept passes and play within their own comfort level – given that they, too, play a similar style – Germany employed man-to-man marking in their quarterfinal against Spain.

If they play a similar style against India, it could choke the team’s creative outlets like captain Vivek Sagar Prasad, who plays as centre-half. When Prasad is given

space and time in the midfield, he is able to use his pace and agility to receive a pass and release the forwards with his natural instinct to play an attacking ball.

However, given his short stature – he’s 5’3” – he can be outmuscled if Germany’s bulky midfielders mark him closely. The same goes for the forwards, who might have to play in combinations of two or three to get behind their markers. It’s a style India haven’t played until now, so if Germany play the same way as they did against Spain, it could get tricky for India. India is a side that likes to counterattack. Belgium, who played high up, allowed India to use their blinding speed to move forward. But Germany have so far played a half-court press.
