The urban assembly seat of Shimla in Himachal Pradesh recorded the lowest turnout in the state at 62.53 per cent, 13 percentage points less than the state average of 75.6 per cent. also shown the trend of urban apathy to voting, pulling down the overall turnout in the first phase, the EC said. Voter turnout in Surat, Rajkot and Jamnagar was lower than the overall 63.3 per cent in the first phase of Gujarat assembly elections, the poll panel said. The BJP on Saturday said that using abusive words against Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become a “new normal” for the Congress. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra cited reports of Karnataka Congress leader V S Ugrappa calling Modi “Bhasmasur”, a demon in Indian mythology, to hit out at the opposition party. He noted that it comes close on the heels of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge throwing “Ravan” barb at the prime minister. It has become an issue of common occurrence as far as the Congress is concerned. The Congress has become an abusive party, he alleged at a press conference. Citing US President Joe Biden’s statement that he stands with his “friend” Modi as India took over the G-20 presidency, Patra said on one hand the world stands with him and on the other, the Congress uses such language for him. “This is sad and worrisome,” the BJP

In his first reaction over the controversy, Kharge told that he believes in “performance politics”, but the BJP’s style of politics often lacks the spirit of democracy as “they make it about one person only, who is everywhere”. On the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) prospects in the ongoing Gujarat elections, he alleged that it was working at somebody’s behest “to divide the Congress’s votes.” Asked whether personal attacks, such as his own “Ravan” jibe, have become a key feature of the campaign, Kharge said, “They are misusing it for electoral gains.” “For us, politics is not about individuals. They make it about only one person, who is everywhere,” the veteran Congress leader said. “I don’t comment on any individual or make personal remarks because I also have experience of parliamentary politics for 51 years. I criticised on the issues of development, inflation, unemployment, poverty,” he said. Speaking at a rally in Ahmedabad earlier this week, Kharge had said PM Modi asks people to vote “looking at his face” in all elections. “Are you 100-headed like Ravan?” he had said. After former Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, now Lok Janshakti Party Ram Vilas (LJPR) President and Jamui MP Chirag Paswan has claimed that tari is a natural drink and the ban on it should be lifted in the state. “We cannot compare tari with liquor… it cannot be put in the same category as in liquor. Lakhs of people from the Pasi community are dependent on tari. It is a sole source of earning for them,” Paswan said. “…It is a natural juice produced from the palm tree. How it turned liquor is only Nitish Kumar and his bureaucrats would understand. Liquor manufacturing units are established in every block of the state and the officers are allowing them to operate,” he added. “Nitish Kumar is sitting in a big bungalow of Patna while

the present and the future of poor people of Pasi community is in darkness. Nitish Kumar is unable to see their plight. The administration is registering FIRs and arresting them for selling tari; and when they protested against this, the state police in Patna beat them mercilessly and lodged them in jail. The police and other administrative officers of Bihar are not arresting those involved in illegal liquor trade as they are sharing the earnings and the money is going from bottom to top,” Paswan said.

Just before the half, Breel Embolo gave the contest another twist by bringing Switzerland to parity. Remo Freuler then scored three

minutes into the second half to give Switzerland a one-goal lead yet again. Breel Embolo provided a lategame comeback for Switzerland in an exciting first half, but they soon took the lead again thanks to an outstanding team goal that Remo Freuler finished off.

Increased stability in grain exports from Russia and Ukraine sent global prices for grains and cereals lower in November, the Rome-based Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said. The broader FAO Food Price Index was flat compared to a month earlier, remaining near record highs, Xinhua news agency quoted the UN body as saying on Friday. The Organization said that Russia’s rejoining of the Black Sea Grain Initiative was a driving force in November, pushing global prices for wheat 2.8 per cent lower. FAO’s sub-index for grains and cereals, which includes wheat, also declined, though only by 1.3 per cent. The sub-index is the largest component in the main

Food Price Index. Black Sea ports, normally major trading hubs of wheat and other grains, have been unreliable since Russia launched its ongoing war against Ukraine on February 24, pushing prices to record highs earlier in the year. After a period outside the initiative, Russia rejoined it in November and the terms for the agreement were extended into 2023. FAO said the stability in wheat exports connected to the Black Sea Grain Initiative was enough to balance higher demand from the US and some European countries.

Bollywood actress Bhumi Pednekar will next be seen playing the role of Vicky Kaushal’s ‘hottie’ wife in Shashank Khaitan’s Govinda Naam Mera. The actress has been receiving praises for her acting in the film, and especially for the mic-drop moments due to her hilarious dialogues. Bhumi is thrilled that the makers have empowered her character to deliver the punchlines on screen as it changes the status quo in the industry because a man used to always mouth the best dialogues in a genre like romantic comedy. Bhumi says, “I have loved delivering the punches in the film and I have to admit that I have been given some of the most hilarious punchlines by Shashank. What I love the most about my dialoguebaazi in Govinda Naam Mera is that they are from the heroine’s side and that’s refreshing for a romantic comedy in the Hindi film industry because traditionally only heroes used to get all the great dialogues in a genre like this and make people laugh.” She adds, “I’m glad that my producer Karan Johar and my director Shashank Khaitan thought of subverting the norm and empowering a girl to deliver some of the most cracking dialogues that I have seen on screen in recent times. Gauri Waghmare is literally one of most favourite characters that I have played on screen.” About her character, Bhumi further adds, “She is an equal to a man and constantly reminds a man that her gender doesn’t make her inferior and that she is the master of her own actions and decisions. I hope I can entertain everyone with this role and audiences laugh their hearts out when they see the film.” Also starring Kiara Advani and produced by Dharma Productions, Govinda Naam Mera will stream on Disney+ Hotstar from December 16.
