Bajwa flays BJP, Akalis over attack Agency | Chandigarh

Former Punjab Congress chief Partap Singh Bajwa today launched a frontal attack on BJP-led NDA government over alleged lapses in national security, leading to the terrorist attack on Pathankot airbase. Bajwa targeted Home Minister Rajnath Singh over the “confusion and contradiction” in the Pathankot operation, saying it was exemplified by his tweet, “The (Pathankot) operation is over. We have won a great victory. Five terrorists have been killed”, even though the operation to flush out the militants was still on.

At least nine persons were killed and over 100 injured as a strong 6.8 magnitude earthquake epicentred in Manipur on Monday struck the northeastern and eastern regions, damaging buildings and sparking panic that sent people scampering out of their homes. A team of National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) has reached here with relief materials this morning and another team is expected soon, official sources said. Manipur bore the brunt of the temblor which struck at 4.35 AM, jolting the people out of their sleep. Many buildings collapsed or developed cracks in Tamenglong, where the earthquake was epicetred at a depth of 17 km. Army and Air Force have joined the relief operations and two teams of National Disaster Response Force have been rushed to Imphal while one was being sent to Assam where

at least 20 people were injured. Of the six deaths in Manipur, three were killed in Imphal West district, one at Jiribam in Imphal East district and

earthquake, Assam Commissioner and Secretary (Disaster Management) Pramod Kumar Tiwari said. Officials said at least 30 buildings have developed cracks. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he had spoken to Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who is in Assam, and asked him to oversee the situation arising due to the earthquake. 2 / Dt. 05-01-2016, Tuesday Editors’ Picks tuesday, JANUARY 05, 2016 Laws of defamation and contempt must be seen as lingering anachronisms December has been a cruel month for free speech. Law is imperfect, often used for the wrong reasons to exacerbate the very publicity it claimed to want to suppress. A quick retrospective will remind us of Salman Rushdie’s Satanic Verses under the Customs Act, Khushboo indicted for criminal defamation and later absolved in the Supreme Court, James W. Laine’s work on Shivaji, banned under the Criminal Procedure Code, liberated by the Supreme Court, the ban on Sahmat’s posters lifted by the Delhi High Court, Khushwant Singh’s biography injuncted by Maneka Gandhi until the ban was lifted by the Delhi High Court. M.F. Husain was pilloried by criminal offences till he left the country to die abroad. The stories are endless as India’s increasingly intolerant society allows Hindu fundamentalists to threaten those they don’t like with impunity. Recently Kirti Azad, a BJP MP, seemed to want an investigation into the contracts for re-doing the Feroz Shah Kotla ground when Arun Jaitley was in charge of the Delhi & District Cricket Association. He was suspended from the party. Kejriwal entered the fray. The controversy spiralled. The Delhi government set up a probe committee. On December 21, 2015, Jaitley filed both civil and criminal cases against Kejriwal and five others. Kirti Azad was saved Jaitley’s ire. The civil case demanded Rs 10 crore as damages. What was impressive was not the initiation of cases but the fanfare that went with them. Jaitley was accompanied by ministers Smriti Irani, Piyush Goyal, J.P. Nadda, Venkaiah Naidu, R.S. Rathore. The case seemed less important than the fanfare. Jaitley, a lawyer of distinction, has been wrongly advised. After the Auto Shankar case (1994), India has adopted the NY Times formula that public figures must expect criticism on public issues in due diligence publications, even if found to be untrue. Thus, Morarji Desai lost his case against the duly diligent Seymour Hersh alleging that Morarji was a CIA agent. Criminal defamation can also provide such protection (Section 499, Exception 1 and 9). What was the purpose of Jaitley’s cases? Declaration of innocence. But mostly tamasha. The only thing missing was the drums and the dance of triumph by BJP followers. Arundhati Roy has been a champion of many causes for justice to the disempowered. The Bombay High Court denied bail to 90 per cent disabled Professor G.N. Saibaba, arrested for speciously alleged Maoist links. Roy published an article, “Professor POW”, in Outlook magazine of May 18, 2015. Saibaba’s bail was extended in July because of his disability.

DAY Bhumi Pednekar to take Punjabi Sonakshi Sinha in swimwear diction classes for next film - her first 2016 selfie!

Agency | Mumbai She is a perfectionist. All of us know how Bhumi Pednekar gained 15 kgs for her role of Sandhya in the lovable sleeper hit of the year, Dum Laga Ke Haisha. The actress who is known to stretch her limits to get into the character is going to play

a Punjabi in her next film, Manmarziyan. The film also stars her Dum Laga Ke Haisha co-star, Ayushmann Khurrana and Vicky Kaushal. The latter was a part of Neeraj Ghaywan’s much-acclaimed film Masaan where he played the role of a boy from lower strata of so-

ciety. The advantage the two boys have is that they come from Punjabi families and are well-versed with the lingo. In fact, Ayushmann is brought up in Chandigarh and speaks the language quite well. However, Punjabi diction was going to be an issue for Bhumi, who is a Maharashtrian belong to Mumbai. So solve this problem, director Sameer Sharma and Aanand L Rai have decided to hire a diction coach. People are eager for the film as the chemistry between Bhumi and Ayushmann was much loved in their first film together. This film is the first production of Rai in which he is not directing the project. Bhumi has lost a lot of weight and is looking svelte as ever in the first look of the film. We are sure that with her dedication she’ll turn into a Punjabi kudi in no time.

Agency | Mumbai It was a moment of brief touchdown for Akshay Kumar’s Airlift with the release of the second trailer, weaving a story around one man’s mission to evacuate Indians from foreign shores during troubled times along with hints of politics, diplomacy, bureaucracy, love and patriotism. Bringing an end to the wait, the trailer of Raja Krishna Menon-directed movie was released on Saturday. And it was all about action and emotion. The 48-year-old Khiladi actor is seen as an influ-

ential businessman, Ranjit Katyal, who has made many enemies owing to his power. He decided to save Indians first upon himself and his family in a war torn Kuwait. The trailer gives a sneak peek of the time when Iraq invaded Kuwait and Indians had to be evacuated in 1990. The film also stars Nimrat Kaur and Purab Kohli. The trailer focuses on Akshay’s character planning an escape from Kuwait. The film is based on true events and on how one man risks his family’s life and his life to do the right thing.

It was earlier reported that the CBFC wanted to give the film an ‘A’ certificate due to a few violent and abusive scenes, but Jha did not agree and wanted a ‘UA’ certificate. While Rajkumar Hirani was allowed to retain the word ‘saala’ in the title of his next, Saala Khadoos, Prakash Jha has been

Gujarat to get its first solar, stellar observatories Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

Gujarat is all set to get its first-ever solar as well stellar observatories, with government-recognised Indian Planetary Society (IPS) selecting Kutch district for embarking on this project at a cumulative cost of Rs 12 crore. The Solar Observatory would be utilised to study the Sun as well as the Solar System, while the Stellar Observatory will collect crucial information by studying various galaxies, planets and stars, said IPS CEO Akshay Malhotra, who is at present in Kutch for a detailed study of possible locations in that area. “This is for the first time when IPS is embarking on a project to set

up its first solar as well as stellar observatories. We have decided to set up these observatories in Kutch, as the sky is very clear here, which is very essential for accurate results,” he said. “There are such observatories in different parts of India being run by the government, while we are an independent NGO recognised by the government. This is for the first time when

Gujarat will get such observatories, as there are none at present here,” said Malhotra. Apart from having a clear sky, which is necessary for night observation of galaxies, the Tropic of Cancer passes from here, which gives ample sunlight necessary for solar observation, he said. “The Tropic of Cancer passes from near Bhuj, which makes this place ideal for solar ob-
