Agency News: New Delhi

With foreign exchange reserves dropping to $3.08 billion, Pakistan has no other option but to accept the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) stringent riders for resumption of the loan package under the Extended Fund Facility (EEF).

Worries for Pakistan Prime Shehbaz Sharif will rise with general elections approaching. The IMF riders will further push inflation and dent the pockets of the common people. Problems will surge for the common Pakistanis, who are already reeling under inflationary pressures with acute shortage of essential items. An analyst told India Narrative that faced with unparalleled economic stress, Islamabad could try to increase the size of the loan programme. However, he said that the loan programme may not put the economy back in order. Addressing a BJP rally here, the senior party leader claimed that the population of Adivasis has deceased from 35 per cent to 24 per cent due to massive infiltration from across the international border. are being looted using railway wagons and tractors. People will unseat this government from power in the state,” he said. Shah said the BJP will win all the 14 Lok Sabha seats in the state in the elections next year. Referring to the killing of a class 12 student, who was burnt alive by her stalker in Dumka last year, Shah said, “Adivasi girls are being murdered while the Hemant Soren government is indulging in politics of appeasement.”

Cong Welcome to Take Any Decision: Patiala MP Preneet Kaur on Show Cause Notice

The operative question is, what happens after the great fall? Even if something in excess of $120 billion has been lopped off the market value of the Adani firms (with about two-thirds of that loss suffered by Gautam Adani himself), the fact is that the group is still valued at over $100 billion, with Mr Adani therefore worth at least two-thirds of that. These numbers have to be approximations because of the rapidly evolving scenario, and because it is hard to make adjustments for cross-holdings, pledges of promoter shares and such. But even if Mr Adani is no longer the world’s No. 1 or No. 2 in terms of wealth, or even No. 20, he remains a very wealthy man and the group is still a very large entity. So what next? Hindenburg Research said that the group was 85 per cent overvalued. Since that estimate was released 10 days ago, the share price correction has averaged about 60 per cent. But even now, the group’s companies enjoy outsize valuations. Adani Power, for instance, is valued at more than 14 times book value, as is Adani Transmission, while Adani Green Energy is valued at 56 times book value! More normal multiples to book value exist for a recently-acquired entity like Ambuja Cement, which has a price to book ratio of 2.1. By the standards of normal valuation, many Adani shares still have a long way to fall. Companies don’t live or die on the basis of their market capitalisation, though they can exploit it to raise fresh capital. But capital has to be serviced, especially debt, for which you need profits and cash flow. The financials of the seven core listed entities of the Adani group show pre-tax profits last March of about ~17,000 crore — not very different from that of NTPC! The group’s overseas debt is now discounted to distress levels in the market, and credit ratings may be lowered. So any fresh bonds will be on expensive terms. Fresh bank loans will need brave bank managers.

Targeting the Centre over a tussle with the judiciary, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday said that the BJP government is fighting with everyone from judges, Supreme Court, and state governments to farmers and traders. Kejriwal advised the Narendra Modi government not to meddle in others’ work. “Why does the central government fight with everyone? With judges, Supreme Court, state governments, farmers and traders? The country will not progress by quarrelling with everyone. Do your job and let others do theirs. Don’t interfere in other’s work,” Kejriwal said in a tweet in Hindi while citing a news report on the Collegium system of appointment of judges becoming a major flashpoint between the

ED Questions Rahul Gandhi’s Aide in Money Laundering Case Against TMC Functionary

Agency News: New Delhi

The Enforcement Directorate has questioned and recorded the statement of Alankar Sawai, a close aide of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, in a money laundering case in which TMC spokesperson Saket Gokhale was recently arrested by the agency in Gujarat, officials said. Sawai was questioned and also confronted with Gokhale in Ahmedabad over three days earlier this week, they said. A former banker, Sawai is considered to be a close aide of Gandhi, a former Congress president, and is stated to be heading his research team. The federal probe agency summoned Sawai after it arrested 35-yearold Gokhale on January 25 while he was in the Gujarat Police’s custody in connection with alleged financial irregularities in raising funds through a crowd funding platform. The Enforcement Directorate (ED),

while seeking Gokhale’s remand on that day, had informed a Ahmedabad court that when he was asked about Rs 23.54 lakh deposited in his bank account in cash over a year, Gokhale had told the agency that “this amount was given in cash by Alankar Sawai of the India National Congress for social media work and other consultancy”. On being asked as to why Sawai had paid him in cash, Gokhale stated that only Sawai can answer this question, the ED told the court in its remand paper. “Further, on being asked regarding any written agreement with Alankar Sawai in respect of social media work he stated that it was only verbal agreement with Alankar Sawai,” the agency said.

Govt Openly Displaying Its Anti-minority Policy as if it Was Badge of Honour: Chidambaram

Agency News: New Delhi

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Saturday attacked the Centre for discontinuing the Maulana Azad National Fellowship, alleging that the government is on an “overdrive” to make life more difficult for students from minority communities. In a written reply in Lok Sabha earlier this week, Minority Affairs Minister Smriti Irani had said, “As the Maulana Azad National Fellowship (MANF) Scheme overlaps with various fellowship schemes for higher education, the government has decided to discontinue the MANF Scheme from 2022-23.” In a series of tweets, Chidambaram

said, “The government’s excuse for scrapping the Maulana Azad National Fellowship and the subsidy for education loans to study abroad to minority students is grossly irrational and arbitrary.”

Even admitting that there are “overlapping” schemes, is the fellowship and subsidy to minority students the only schemes that overlap with another scheme, the former Union finance minister asked.

Man acquitted by SC in 2012 Chhawla gang-rape, murder case held for killing autorickshaw driver

Agency News: New Delhi

A man who recently walked free after being acquitted by the Supreme Court in the 2012 Chhawla gang-rape and murder case has been arrested by Delhi Police for allegedly killing an auto-rickshaw driver in Dwarka area on January 26, officials said on Saturday. The Supreme Court had on November 7 acquitted Vinod and two others in the Chhawla case, setting aside the Delhi High Court’s August 26, 2014.

Agency News: Chennai

The AIADMK factions are engaged in separate meetings to discuss the Supreme Court direction, asking them to select a candidate for the Erode East bypoll through a general council.

The rival faction, under another former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, may not find the going easy. A day after the BJP initiated a friendly and polite dialogue with the two AIADMK factions asking them to bury the hatchet and face the Erode East Assembly by-poll

A senior leader in the party claimed that the meet also discussed withdrawing the candidature of Senthil Murugan from the electoral race, keeping the amalgamation in mind. In Erode, Palaniswami held a meeting with his supporters on securing the Two Leaves symbol, and projecting Thennarasu’s candidature at the general council meetings scheduled for Monday.

Agency News: New Delhi

High drama ensued in the national capital on Saturday after BJP workers gathered outside Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal’s office and demanded his resignation over allegations made against the ruling AAP by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). BJP workers raised slogans against the ruling AAP government after ED alleged that Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party used money from the Delhi liquor scam for its campaign in the Goa Assembly polls. “It is no ordinary thing to see a chief minister’s name in a charge sheet. This is reason enough for the CM to resign,” a BJP worker told. AAP convener Kejriwal on Thursday dismissed the Enforcement Directorate’s supplementary charge sheet, alleging cases filed by the agency are “fake” and are used

All the cases filed by ED are fake and they are used to topple governments or form them,” Kejriwal said in a press conference. the probe agency also alleged that AAP’s communications incharge Vijay Nair, an accused in the Delhi liquor scam, had arranged a FaceTime video call from his phone between Sameer Mahendru, chief of Indospirits and Kejriwal. Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday said that there is no need to worry over the situation in Doda where a few houses have collapsed earlier this week. He added that the incident was in no way similar to that of Joshimath. the LG said,” A group of experts have reached here to take stock of the situation. The administration will do whatever best is possible. I request everyone to not create unnecessary panic as this situation is not similar to that of Joshimath. As per the reports, at least 22 houses have developed cracks, of which three had collapsed in Doda in Jammu and Kashmir. The incident prompted officials to start the evacuation process of at least 300 people from

their homes to makeshift camps. However, they say that more people could be at risk. The local administration has informed that as per the early observation the cracks were caused as parts of the land appear to have sunk. The situation in Doda has triggered a panic in the local residents as it resembles the situation in Joshimath in Uttarakhand where close to 900 people have had to relocate after over 180 homes developed cracks. The Doda area comes under seismic zone 4, making it more vulnerable to earthquakes.

After scoring seven goals in the 2022 World Cup, Messi could become the World Cup’s all-time leading scorer if he suits up in 2026. He has 13 goals, three behind record-holder Miroslav Klose of Germany. The Argentina captain, however, is sure about one thing: he wants Lionel Scaloni to stay on as head coach until then, regardless. Scaloni is negotiating an extension of his contract with the Argentinian football federation (AFA) and Messi thinks the coach should remain on the job.

Former Australia assistant coach Sridharan Sriram thinks that the Pat Cummins-led side has missed a trick by not picking leg-spinner Adam Zampa for the Test series in India, beginning on February 9.Veteran tweaker Nathan Lyon, Ashton Agar, legspinner Mitchell Swepson and young off-spinner Todd Murphy got the nod in the 18-member Australia squad with Zampa missing out. “I would have personally loved to see Zamps bowl here (in India), because he’s got the pace, he’s got that zip off the pitch,” Sriram, who was associated with the Australian team for six years, was quoted as saying by Sydney Morning Herald. “That’s something I keep an eye out for — who has got the ability to beat you off the pitch — so I think that Zamps has got that,” said Sriram, who has also played eight ODIs for India between 2000

and 2004. Sriram revealed that Zampa was extremely keen to tour India. “He wanted it more than anyone, he wanted to play Test matches in India, he had called me a couple of times a couple of months ago saying ‘Sri, I’m so excited that I could be on that tour’.” Sriram said the challenges of sustaining spin at a high level for long periods will Test Australia in India. “You can bowl a bit slower or a bit quicker, but you still need that zip off the pitch, and for that your action needs to be really strong. What Ashwin and Jadeja and Nathan Lyon do really well is being able to hold their action for long periods of time,” he explained.

Adani Enterprises Ltd has shelved a plan to raise as much as 10 billion Indian rupees ($121.65 million), Bloomberg News reported on Saturday. The flagship firm of Indian billionaire Gautam Adani’s empire had planned the public note issuance for January, working with Edelweiss Financial Services Ltd, AK Capital, JM Financial, and Trust Capital, but activity has now stopped, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter. Adani Enterprises called off its $2.5 billion share sale in a dramatic reversal on Wednesday this week, after a rout sparked by a US short-seller’s criticisms wiped billions more off the value of the Indian tycoon’s

stocks. The Indian markets regulator is already investigating the matter, including the crash in the company’s shares, any irregularities in the now-shelved share sale and any possible price manipulation, Reuters reported this week. A spokesperson for Adani Group did not immediately respond to Reuters request for comment. Edelweiss, AK Capital also did not respond to requests for comment, while JM Financial and Trust Capital could not be reached. A report by Hindenburg Research last week alleged improper use of offshore tax havens and stock manipulation by the Adani Group. It also raised concerns about high debt and the valuations of seven listed Adani companies.

Ranji Trophy: Bengal cruise into semi-final with 9-wicket victory over Jharkhand League Cup: Manchester United eye first trophy in six years

A jury has found Elon Musk not guilty of fraud over a series of tweets in 2018 in which he declared he had “funding secured” to take electric car company Tesla private. The tweets caused the share price of Tesla to fluctuate dramatically. Shareholders sued Musk, claiming the billionaire had acted recklessly. ”Thank goodness, the wisdom of the people has prevailed!” Musk tweeted after the verdict on Friday. “I am deeply appreciative of the jury’s unanimous finding of innocence in the Tesla 420 take-private case.” On August 7, 2018, Musk tweeted that he was considering taking Tesla private at $420 (€388) per share — roughly 23% more than the previous day’s closing price. Musk tweeted that he had “funding secured” and said

the next day that “investor support is confirmed.” This caused the stock price to soar, but when it became clear the supposed buyout would not happen, the share price crashed again. In a separate lawsuit against Musk, the US Securities and Exchange Commission alleged that the billionaire had rounded up the supposed buyout price to $420 per share because he had recently learned about the number’s “significance in marijuana culture” and thought his girlfriend would find it funny.

Bengal couldn’t quite wrap it up within an hour, which they had aimed for after being in absolute control at the end of Day III of their Ranji Trophy quarter-final clash against Jharkhand at Eden Gardens. But they did not take much longer either. The first session of the penultimate day was good enough for Manoj Tiwary and his teammates to seal the deal with a nine-wicket win and confirm a semi-final berth for the third time on the trot. Jharkhand’s ninth-wicket pair of Supriyo Chakraborty (41 not out) and Rahul Shukla did frustrate Bengal a little bit with their 56-run stand after Mukesh Kumar had Shahbaz Nadeem — one of the overnight

batsmen — caught behind in the very first over on Friday. However, a needless run out of Shukla helped Bengal break the stand. And within the next two balls, Akash Ghatak, in his first over of the day, varied his pace well to knock over No.11 Ashish Kumar. Jharkhand’s second innings ended at 221, setting Bengal a target of 67. Abhimanyu Easwaran (28 not out) and Sudip Gharami (26 not out) took just 12.4 overs to notch up the required runs. Pacer Akash Deep was named Man of the Match for his match figures of six for 108.

This time last year, the mood at Manchester United was positively toxic. The club was on their third manager of the campaign, they would soon be out of all three Cup competitions in addition to being hopelessly adrift in the Premier League, the football was awful, the players had lost all stomach for a fight and there was mutiny in the stands. The turnaround in eight months under Erik ten Hag, then, has been startling and, while there is a long way to go before anyone can say with any conviction that United are back, the Dutchman has wasted no time propelling

the club back into contention for leading honours. Newcastle now stand between United and a first trophy for six years at Wembley on February 26, when old money will meet new, and Ten Hag will hope the League Cup can be a springboard to bigger things in a way it once was — twice, in fact — for Alex Ferguson. Of course, there are no guarantees of that. United hoped League Cup success would prove a launchpad back in 2017 under Jose Mourinho, who also won the Europa League three months later. Yet it was not too long before United were back at square one and in desperate need of reinvigoration.

More than a period action adventure, Gina PrinceBythewood’s The Woman King actively engages in making new myths through a storyline that puts women at the heart of the action.

Set in 1823, the movie focuses on the west African kingdom of Dahomey and its Agojie — an all-woman fighting unit that is tougher and more feared than any band of male soldiers.

Academy Award-winning actress Viola Davis delivers a knock-out performance as the commander of this elite group of female warriors and is also the soul of this film that celebrates Black pride. As

by Siddharth Anand, the movie marked SRK’s return to leading hero roles after four years. It also features John Abraham and Deepika Padukone. The actor said while he liked “Pathaan” a lot after the first screening, the audience’s response has surpassed his expectations. “I liked the film a lot

but didn’t know it will be loved so much,” he said, crediting producer Aditya Chopra and Anand for their “belief and vision”. When one of the fans asked about Shah Rukh’s wife, interior designer and film producer Gauri Khan’s reaction to “Pathaan”, the actor said she was “happy”. ”She was very happy. The whole family is very happy for me,” he replied. “Pathaan” follows an Indian intelligence agent, who resurfaces to thwart a terror attack planned by mercenary group Outfit X, led by Jim (John), on the Indian capital.

Indian refiners have begun paying for most of their Russian oil purchased via Dubai-based traders in United Arab Emirates dirhams instead of U.S. dollars, four sources with knowledge of the matter said. While Western sanctions against Moscow are not recognised by India, and purchases of Russian oil may in any case not violate them, banks and financial institutions are cautious about clearing payments so as not to unwittingly fall foul of the many measures imposed against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine. Indian refiners and traders are concerned they may not be able to continue to settle trades in dollars, especially if the price of Russian crude rises above a cap imposed by the Group of Seven nations and Australia in December. That

has led traders to seek alternative methods of payment, which could also aid Russia’s efforts to dedollarise its economy in response to the Western sanctions. Previous attempts by Indian refiners to pay traders for Russian crude in dirhams through Dubai banks failed, forcing them to switch back to the U.S. currency. But India’s top bank, the State Bank of India (SBI), is now clearing these dirham payments, the sources told Reuters, providing details of transactions that have not previously been reported. The SBI, which has overseas branches including in the United States, did not respond to requests for comment. The G7 price cap prohibits any Western company, such as the insurance and shipping service providers that underpin much of global trade, Russian crude if the purchase price.

the kingdom of Dahomey faces the prospect of war with the neighbouring Oyo empire, the Agojie, headed by General Nanisca (Viola Davis), swear to protect their land. Nanisca begins training a new batch of warriors to face the enemy. But this battle to save their motherland turns personal for Nanisca when she discovers that she has a deeper connection

with one of the trainees, Nawi (Thuso Mbedu). How the Agojie use their fierce battle skills to safeguard their freedom forms the crux of the film. The screenplay also tenderly touches upon the bond shared by these African female warriors. The chemistry between Nanisca and her trusted lieutenants — Izogie (Lashana Lynch) and Amenza (Sheila Atim) — crackles through the duration of the movie. The Woman King also deals with generational change — Nanisca comes with an abundance of experience and wisdom, while Nawi is bubbling with enthusiasm and new ideas. The older woman’s connection with her protege forms the emotional arc of the story.

‘Yodha’ actor Raashii Khanna on Sidharth Malhotra: ‘He is the easiest actor to work with’

Raashii Khanna, who is soon to be seen as a government official in Raj & DK’s con series Farzi, has an exciting lineup for 2023. In a freewheeling chat with The Free Press Journal, she opens up about the next big feature release alongside Sidharth Malhotra, Yodha, working in Telugu and Tamil films, and more. I think for me, every year is just about trying to find something which I wish to be part of or I wait for certain things to come to me. Our profession is unpredictable. I am not anxious about the future. I love the process of it more than the result. Every day is important and great, that’s how I live. I don’t believe in gender politics, in the sense that power needs to go. My strength lies in my self-belief. No one can put me down in any way with their words easily. You can’t criticize me and put me down unless it is constructive criticism. I think I know myself well, that is my strength. I am hard-working and this is something I admire about myself. I believe in my own strengths. I have read a script in Tamil that I might start in March. There’s one Telugu film, which is tentatively titled Sharwanand 33. I can’t reveal anything about it as they are yet to make an announcement. I have also signed two films in Telugu and I am waiting for their official announcements. I am waiting for Farzi to release followed by Yodha on July 7, 2023. Yodha is one film I am very excited about. My character is very strong. I feel fortunate to get such a character with a difference, which is very strong too. He is a wonderful co-actor. We used to sit and discuss films. Since OTT shows are doing well these days, we didn’t understand whether OTT shows are working or theatrical releases. He is the easiest actor to work with. He is respectful and a sorted actor. With Yodha, Hindi audiences will get to see me after a long time. It is all about the story and the character so wherever a satisfying story will take me, I will go there. There are no barriers now, no industry is big or small. I am hoping to get different Hindi characters, though I was lucky to play varied roles. In films, you cannot stretch a story and the character but in OTT, every character can be flushed out so well that a lot of actors are getting work.

Raashii Khanna shares her excitement about the release of Farzi and Yodha.
