Govt bans December 16 gangrape documentary Agency : New Delhi The home ministry has asked the BBC, the information and broadcasting, foreign and information technology ministries on Wednesday to stop the telecast of a controversial documentary featuring an accused in the December 16 gangrape case, saying it was planning legal action against the filmmaker. Home minister Rajnath Singh told Parliament he was "stunned" how permission was granted for convict Mukesh Singh's interview inside Delhi's Tihar Jail, as woman MPs from opposition parties stormed into the well of the Rajya Sabha in protest. The director general of Tihar Jail Alok Kumar Verma was

also summoned by Singh over the permissions granted for the interview. "I was stunned and deeply hurt by this when I came to know about it yesterday. I spoke to the authorities and made sure that all steps are taken to stop the broadcast," Singh said, adding the Centre wouldn't allow the commercial use of such incidents. The home minister's comments came a day after Delhi Police registered an FIR against British filmmaker Leslee Udwin's documentary India's Daughter and obtained a restraining order from a local court, hours after portions of the interview appeared in the media and on YouTube. In them, the death row inmate,

who was driving the bus when the crime took place, blames the 23-year-old victim for the brutal assault that ultimately killed her, triggering nationwide outrage. NDTV was due to have shown the documentary to mark International Women's Day on Sunday, when it would also have been broadcast in six other countries including Britain. An eight-minute edited version of the film,

however, was already broadcast BBC's Newsnight programme on Tuesday night. Four men, including Singh, were sentenced to death in the case, but their execution was later stayed by the Supreme Court. One of the defendants hanged himself in prison, while another who was under 18 years of age at the time of the incident, was sentenced to 3 years in juvenile detention. Udwin

said she was heart-broken by the ban on the documentary but told HT she had all permissions from Tihar and the home ministry, along with a signed consent form from convicts interviewed for the documentary. Tihar jail administration claimed Udwin did not comply with the conditions of the consent forms but the British filmmaker said she showed authorities the unedited footage as required. "They constituted a three-man committee, watched for three hours, and then said, it's too long," she told HT.

Earlier in the day, Singh told both Houses it would act promptly against officials responsible for giving permission to Udwin and that he would review existing provisions for allowing shoots inside prisons to ensure such incidents are not repeated. But woman opposition members were not satisfied, and led by the Samajwadi Party's Jaya Bachchan, all benches present in the House trooped into the Well. Soon, their male colleagues also joined, forcing deputy chairman PJ Kurien to adjourn the House for 15

Bill to allow e-rickshaws in Delhi passed in Lok Sabha Agency : New Delhi A Bill seeking to pave the way for plying of erickshaws on Delhi roads was passed by the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. It is the third ordinance to be replaced by a bill passed by the Lower House since Monday, the others being the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation)Amendment Bill. Replying to the debate on the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said while ensuring that the livelihood of one lakh e-rickshaw drivers is protected, the government would not compromise on the issue of safety. He said since all e-rickshaws were being manufactured in India, his ministry has asked the association of e-rickshaw owners to ensure stringent quality control of parts used to manufacture the vehicles and 17 standards have been set for the purpose. It is the third ordinance to be replaced by a bill passed by

the Lower House since Monday, the others being the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation)Amendment Bill. Rejecting the contention that the ordinance was aimed at garnering votes for BJP ahead of Delhi assembly polls, Gadkari said as the Rajya Sabha did not pass the bill, government had to promulgate the ordinance to help the e-rickshaw owners. In an effort to check cartelisation, the driver of the vehicle will be owner and no one else will get the licence, he said. E-rickshaws, or battery-operated three-

wheeler vehicles, had gone off the roads after the Delhi High Court banned their plying in July last on grounds of safety and insurance issues. An earlier Bill to regularise e-rickshaws was passed by the Lok Sabha in the Winter Session but as it was stuck in the Rajya Sabha, the government issued the ordinance. The earlier bill has since been withdrawn. The government had in October last notified the rules for plying of erickshaws and made driver’s licence mandatory for operating them and limiting their speed to 25 kmph. The new rules

provide that e-rickshaws will be allowed to carry four passengers and 40 kg luggage while e-carts would transport goods up to 310 kg. Earlier participating in the debate, Revolutionary Socialist Party MP NK Premchandran said although he supported the amendments of the bill, he strongly opposed the ordinance route used by the government to amend the Motor Vehicles Act. “We endorse the government action to get license for erickshaw drivers. But we oppose the way, the bill is being brought,” he said. Congress MP Sushmita Dev too slammed the government for using the ordinance route to amend the law and asked whether the government had shown the same interest in bringing the Ordinance if the Gauhati High Court had banned plying of E-rickshaws in Assam. “The government brought selective ordinances to suit their politics,” Dev said.

minutes. Bachchan said women do not want "crocodile tears" but wanted the government to take action immediately. "The reality is that what that man (convict) spoke reflects the view of many men in India. Why are we shying away from reality? We should confront the issue. Let us not pretend that all is well," said Rajya Sabha MP Anu Aga, disapproving of the ban. The No Objection Certificate issued to Udwin remained at the centre of the controversy with Singh saying the permission was issued by the home ministry in July 2013.

Agency : Kathmandu All 224 passengers on board a Turkish Airlines flight had a narrow escape when their Airbus A330 aircraft skidded off the runway at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) here early on Wednesday morning. The terminal, Nepal`s only international airport, was ordered shut till 5 pm on Wednesday leading to cancellation or delays in at least 10

international flights, authorities said. The Turkish passenger jet, while landing at TIA -- where torrential rains for the last three days have rendered the weather foggy and visibility poor -missed the central alignment of the runway and skidded on to the adjacent grassy surface around 7.45 am on Wednesday. The front gear of the aircraft collapsed upon landing and the airbus skidded for at least 1,000

metres on the grassy verge before coming to a stop. "The plane skidded for at least 1,000 metres," said a statement issued by the TIA authorities adding that foam extinguishers were used to prevent any damage. All 224 passengers aboard the Turkish Airlines flight TK757 from Istanbul were evacuated through the emergency doors. Images of the aircraft circulating on social networking site Twitter showed the plane lying on the grassy surface near the airport fire station with its nose resting on the ground. Before being given permission to land, the Turkish passenger jet was told to circle for almost an hour due to poor ground visibility.

Yadav, Bhushan face ouster Talks between the two conflicting factions in the Aam Aadmi Party appeared to have broken down ahead of Wednesday’s crucial national executive meeting which is likely to lead to the ouster of founder members Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan from the political affairs committee. Members of the party’s Delhi unit on Tuesday said a proposal will be moved to remove both from the party’s highest level committee. Sources also said Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, owing to ill health, may not attend the meeting. According to reports, Mr. Kejriwal will leave for Bengaluru on Wednesday evening for naturopathy treatment for 10 days. The treatment had been advised because he had been suffering from high blood sugar levels and persistent coughing. Some sources in the party also claimed that though Mr. Prashant Bhushan had asked to meet him ahead of Wednesday’s meeting, Mr. Kejriwal could not respond. The Delhi Chief Minister earlier broke his silence on the internal controversy on Tuesday, tweeting that he was ‘deeply hurt and pained’ by what was going on. Last week, Mr. Kejriwal reportedly agreed on a compromise, according to senior party leader Anand Kumar. The solution would have been to reconstitute the parliamentary affairs committee with new faces, leaving out both Mr. Yadav and Mr. Prashant Bhushan as well as Manish Sisodia and Gopal Rai who are part of the Kejriwal camp and are now Cabinet Ministers in Delhi. However, Mr. Prashant Bhushan’s letter in which he had criticised Mr. Kejriwal was leaked to the press and his father, Shanti Bhushan gave an interview calling for Mr. Yadav to replace Mr. Kejriwal as national convener. This put paid to all compromise moves.

gold jewelry. The second good-looking woman at the wedding festivity was Sridevi who mesmerized us with her grace and beauty. Sridevi attended a wedding reception last night wearing a Manish Malhotra sari. With flowers in her hair, she finished out the look with a dark lip and some serious diamond jewelry from Anmol. Dia opted for a silk Anita Dongre maxi adding a contrasting orange dupatta to the look, which elevated the look so much more. I love the layered pearl

necklace. Shraddha was seen in a Manish Malhotra floor-length anarkali, one that she wore with simple diamond jewellery and an even simpler do. Shradhha looked pretty, but I do wish she had a brighter lips. It was an Anita Dongre lehenga for Sonakshi. Wearing her hair down, she finished out the look with a matching bindi and jewelry from Gehna. She looked beautiful. Esha sported a blue lehenga as well at the reception, hers being a Manish Malhotra.

NASA reproduces 3 key building blocks of life in lab Agency : Washington NASA scientists studying the origin of life have reproduced three key components of our hereditary material in the lab. Researchers discovered that an ice sample containing pyrimidine exposed to ultraviolet radiation under space-like conditions produces these essential ingredients of life. Pyrimidine is a ringshaped molecule made up of carbon and nitrogen and is the central structure for uracil, cytosine, and thymine, which are all three part of a genetic code found in ribonucleic (RNA) and deoxyribonucleic acids (DNA). RNA and DNA are central to protein synthesis, but also have many other roles. “We have demonstrated for the first time that we can make uracil, cytosine, and

thymine, all three components of RNA and DNA, non-biologically in a laboratory under conditions found in space,” said Michel Nuevo, research scientist at NASA’s Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, California. “We are showing that these laboratory processes, which simulate conditions in outer space, can make several fundamental building blocks used by living organisms on Earth,” said Nuevo. An ice sample is deposited on a cold substrate in a chamber, where it is irradiated with high-energy ultraviolet (UV) photons from a hydrogen lamp. The bombarding photons break chemical bonds in the ices and break down the ice’s molecules into fragments that then recombine to form new compounds, such as uracil, cytosine, and thymine.

Govt introduces bill on coal blocks auction

Agency : NEW DELHI Amid protests by the opposition, the government on Monday introduced a legislation related to auction of coal blocks to replace an ordinance promulgated earlier. The Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Bill, 2015, provides for the auction and allocation of coal mines through a bidding process. Objecting to the introduction of the bill, BJD's Bhartruhari Mahtab protested against the NDA government bringing in ordinances. Mahtab also said that states were not being consulted on selection of coal blocks which was being done arbitrarily. Referring to Section 7 of the

bill, Mahtab said it empowered the government to decide "subjectively". "You pick and choose from which state you are going to give for power sector and which are the blocks you are going to give to the unregulated sector. This bill empowers this government and it goes against the states,'' he said. Under fire coal minister Piyush Goyal said the government was faced with a "Hobson's choice'' when the Supreme Court struck down 214 allotments as ad hoc and arbitrary. He stressed that thousands of people would have lost their jobs and there would have been a severe coal shortage affecting power supply. The minister added that none of the actions under Section 7 was done "arbitrarily''. He said a technical committee including inter-departmental officials had selected coal blocks based on "defined criteria''.

Players used to IPL SPORTS ROUNDUP schedule, says Sehwag ICC WORLD CUP-2015

Agency : Mumbai Out-of-favour India opener Virender Sehwag on Tuesday said that the start of the cash-rich Indian Premier League less than 10 days after the conclusion of the ongoing cricket World Cup was 'not a problem' as the players were 'used to such kind of tight schedule'. Asked if the players would be exhausted after the month-and-a-half-long World Cup, Sehwag said, "I haven't checked the

schedule, but I have heard that the IPL starts on April 8. It is always like that. You will get two weeks or one week break before the IPL, and then you go home and come back and join your teams. "We are professionals and we are used to (it). Like you work 365 days in a year, for us also it is not 365 days, but only 65 days that we play, so we are okay with that," said the Delhi batsman, who now plays for Kings XI

Punjab in the IPL, at the jersey launch of the team. The World Cup final is scheduled for March 29 and the IPL commences on April 8. Runners-up in the 2014 edition, Sehwag credited Kings XI Punjab coach Sanjay Bangar for his man-management skills. "He gives space to the player. He gives time to the player. He will have a chat with him. The players chat with him like a friend. Same thing he did with me in IPL 7. He said you know what to do and you are my best friend, so let's take this team together and give your feedback. "He is not doing any coaching stuff, but handling each and everyone. He is asking questions to the players, so the players can give answers and he can write it down and remind them before the game which is a good thing to do," he said. The flamboyant batsman hoped Kings XI Punjab would go one step further this year and clinch the coveted trophy for the first time.

Opener Ahmed Shehzad (93) missed out on a hundred but Pakistan punished the UAE bowlers by putting on board a huge total of 339 for six, which was way beyond their

rivals. UAE managed 210 for eight but did well to bat for full 50 overs with Shamimam Anwar scoring 62, his third One-day halfcentury. Others to contribute were Khurram Khan (43) and Amjad Javed (40). Pacemen Sohail Khan (2/ 54) and Wahab Riaz (2/ 54) along with spin allrounder Shahid Afridi (2/ 35) took two wickets apiece for Pakistan. With this win, Pakistan have jumped to fourth in the

After being invited to bat, Pakistan lost opener Nasir Jamshed (4) but Shehzad and Haris Sohail, who scored 70 runs, shared a huge 170-run stand for the second wicket to lay the foundation of a big score.

Agency : NEW DELHI, The controversy surrounding Virat Kohli’s abusive behaviour with an Indian journalist refused to subside on Wednesday despite the team management’s efforts to play it down with complaints being made to the ICC and BCCI about the episode. The BCCI Secretary Anurag Thakur said that it was a case of misunderstanding and the issue should be put to rest immediately to let the team focus on the World Cup. “He (Kohli) has clarified on the issue. For India, the ongoing World Cup is very important. We need to put all these issues to rest and indirectly has communicated that he misunderstood the situation. Let’s put this matter to an end,” Thakur told PTI today when asked about the incident. “In future I think these kind of incidents should be avoided

and taken care of. I have not spoken to players yet, the team management is there, taking care of all the players’ needs,” said the 40-yearold, who was elected as BCCI secretary at the board’s AGM held in Chennai on Sunday. The team management issued a brief statement saying that, “there was a misunderstanding and no abusive language was used. Virat has spoken to the concerned gentleman immediately and matter

ends.” However, the Hindustan Times, whose reporter was abused by Kohli, has filed complaints with the ICC and the BCCI. “I have written a letter to the BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya after consulting our Editor-inChief. I have asked Dalmiya to look into the incident. The reporter in question, Jasvinder Sidhu, has also informed the ICC about the incident,” HT Sports Editor Sukhwant Basra said.

I-League: Mumbai FC Kohli’s abusive behaviour rally to hold Bengaluru FC reported to ICC, BCCI

Agency : MUMBAI Mumbai FC maintained their unbeaten run at the Cooperage, escaping to their second draw as they held Bengaluru FC 1-1 in

their eighth round of the ILeague on Tuesday. Mumbai FC equalised in the 49th minute when Joshimar headed in a cross from Ashutosh Mehta. Bengaluru's writ was so large in the first half that they should have locked up the game but they missed three

to four chances. Apart from the goal, Bengaluru's striker Sean Rooney had the best chance when he was oneon-one with the goalkeeper but Lal pulled off a great save. Mumbai FC, perhaps, let emotions get the better of them and were nearly punished for not keeping their shape in the middle. Bengaluru were quick and were winning the 50-50 balls. Mumbai FC are 6th with 11 points while Bengaluru are third with 14 points.

Ahmedabad's missing animals Gujarat may save Rs 100 mystery: Panjarapol fined 8 lakh crore on coal transportation Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

A local court in Kalol, Gandhinagar, has ordered the Kalol Panjarapol (cattle pound) to pay Rs 8 lakh to an animal trader as compensation for the loss of nearly 700 goats and sheep. The animals had been sent to the cattle pound after police seized them from some trucks.

The court had conducted an inquiry on the Gujarat high court's order. The HC had fined the panjarapol Rs 50,000 for not returning the animals to their owner despite repeated court orders. The pound was also rapped for its carelessness that led to the disappearance of the animals. The owner alleged

Income tax raids on fish exporters in Veraval Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

Officials of the I-T department on Tuesday conducted raids at multiple premises of two prominent fish exporters in Veraval. As many as 17 premises of marine product exporters Gopal Sea Foods and Keshodwala Foods were raided. Tax evasion worth several lakhs has been detected and the raids will continue till Wednesday. "This is the first time we are raiding

fish exporters in the state. During our investigation, we found anomalies in their tax deposits. These companies have turnover of Rs 200 crore-Rs 300 crore and are biggest exporters from the region," said an I-T official. The houses of owners of these firms Lakhan Damji Bhensala (Gopal Sea Foods) and Mohammad Nadeem Yusuf Merchant (Keshodwala Foods) were also raided.

that the panjarapol authorities were not stating the truth about the missing animals. The trucks of the city-based animal trader, Janu Habib, were seized for overloading and 705 animals were sent to the pound. Habib moved court for the animals' custody. Before the HC, the panjarapol supervisors said that only 16 of these animals survived and the rest had perished because of food poisoning. However, during the inquiry, the panjarapol authorities and a veterinarian came up with a different reason — the animals died of various diseases and not due to eating poisonous fodder as they had earlier claimed in the HC. Habib's lawyer Shamshad Pathan said that they suspected foul play because only the goats and sheep, and not cows, had supposedly died of food poisoning.

Agency : New Delhi Gujarat can get major benefit of Rs 100 crore in terms of saving transportation cost of coal provided the central government implements recommendations of InterMinisterial Task Force (IMTF). Mr. Piyush Goyal, minister of Coal, Power and New & Renewable Energy (Independent Charge) stated in Rajya Sabha on March 2, 2015 in reply to the question raised by member of Rajya Sabha Mr. Parimal Nathwani. Mr. Goyal stated that the recommendations of the Inter-Ministerial Task Force (IMTF) include partial shifting of linkages of about 1.2 million ton from South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL) to Western

Coalfield Ltd (WCL) leading to savings in transportation costs of about Rs100.71 crore to Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Ltd (GSECL). IMTF was constituted in June 2014 for undertaking comprehensive rationalization of sources of coal with a view to optimize transportation cost and materialization under given technical constraints. The task force submitted its report on February 2, 2015. Mr. Nathwani wanted to know the criteria for allocation of coal blocks from the Western Coalfields Limited (WCL), whether the allocation to coal to the State of Gujarat is as per the criteria and coal allocation in last three years and current year. The minister in his reply stated that coalfield is allocated to thermal

power plants taking into consideration long term availability, potential of incremental production and transportation availability. Gujarat gets coal mainly from coalfields in South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL) located in Chattishgarh and Central and East India. Only a small quantity is supplied from Western Coalfield Ltd (WCL). He also said that thermal power plants in Maharashtra get 40% coal from other states like Orissa and Chattishgarh.
