Decoding Trinamool Congress’s Massive Victory In Latest Civic Polls In Bengal The massive victory achieved by Trinamool Congress in the latest elections to 108 civicbodies in Bengal covering all the districts is a continuation of the trend which was evident atthe assembly elections in 2021.In all the subsequent elections held in the state, first KolkataMunicipal Corporation, then polling in four leading corporations of the state and finally in theremaining urban bodies on February 27.- all the results show a continuing consolidation ofthe TMC among the electorate marginalising the rival parties the BJP, the Left Front and theCongress.TMC got 102 civic bodies out of the total of 108 while the Left Front got one, theindependent Hamro Party got one Darjeeling and in four civic bodies, no party got majoritywith the presence of independents. Now, as regards Bengal, the panchayat elections are due to be held in the state in 2023 andafter this battle in rural Bengal, the Lok Sabha elections are due in April/May 2024. MamataBanerjee has given the party leaders the target of winning all 42 seats to the Lok Sabha in2024 polls and the planning has been going accordingly. In 2019 elections, the TMC got 22seats down by 12 from its tally of 34 in 2014 Lok Sabha elections while the BJP improved itsseats from two in 2014 to 22 in 2019 LS polls. That was a shock to TMC in 2019 and fromthat jolt itself, Mamata Banerjee took preventive steps to improve the image of the stategovernment and strengthen the organisation in association with I-PAC led by strategistPrashant Kishor giving big dividends in the last three years. There are some important pointers from the latest civic bodies results. Trinamool has got atotal 63.5 per cent votes as against Left Front’s 14.14 per cent and BJP’s 12.6 per cent. andCongress’s 4.8 per cent. The independents, significantly got 4.9 per cent, but in the numberof seats, the independents, who are mostly Trinamool rebels got 119 seats, the secondhighest as against 1870 of Trinamool, 63 of BJP, 59 of Congress and 55 by the Left Front. Interms of vote percentage, the Left Front is distant second, BJP third and the Congress fourthamong the parties. But interestingly, the Congress with low voting percentage got more civicbodies seats compared to the Left Front. This means the Congress has a few strongholdswhich gave the party some seats but it failed miserably at the state level. The Left Front has some satisfaction that it got one civic body Taherpur while the BJP andCongress, despite more seats, did not get any. Taherpur has long been under the CPI(M)control and it was a big feat for the Taherpur party members to retain the body despite all outthrust by the TMC to capture it. The overall scenario is that there will be two non TMC bodiesone led by the CPI(M) and the other Darjeeling based Hamro Party but in four otherundecided bodies, there is a big possibility of TMC getting all with the help of the Trinamoolrebels who were not given tickets but fought and won. Out of the total of 119 independents, there are around 100 such rebels and they are waiting for joining TMC again once Mamatatakes a decision after coming back from her Varanasi election tour. The Left Front , especially the CPI(M) can take some comfort that the earlier perception thatthe BJP is the real alternative in Bengal, is gone and the Left with sustained work among the people, can get back some support base which it lost since 2014.There has been sometrickling back of supporters to the CPI(M) finally but that is so miniscule that it will take a longtime for the CPI(M) and the Left to get back to a position when they can attain a position ofgetting around 25 per cent of the voting base. The coming panchayat elections are the nexttesting ground and the Left has to be prepared for that taking its lessons in the last threeyears. The problem of the CPI(M) in Bengal is that the party lacks visionary leaders who can matcheven a portion of the charisma and acceptability which Mamata has got. Through her peopleoriented programmes, especially for the women and the poor, she has emerged as themessiah to the underprivileged and as long as this continues and she does not make amajor political blunder, there will be little scope for the Left to make a major breakthrough. The Party has to be prepared for a long haul.Just making caustic comments against the CM and the programmes, will only alienate thparty. The Left has to be with the people taking up cudgels against the failures anddistortions of the government programmes. The Left has no presence in the state assemblyand also in Lok Sabha from Bengal. So its battle has to be in fields, factories andeducational institutions fighting for the just demands of the disadvantaged and exposingcorrupt practices of Trinamool govt if - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara any. It is a tough task.

UN rights panel votes for high-level probe into alleged violations by Russians in Ukraine

Agency News: New Delhi In a big blow to Moscow, the United Nations Human Rights Council on Friday voted for a high-level investigation into violations committed during the Russian invasion of Ukraine which began last week. However, 13 countries, including India and China, abstained from the voting. The vote paves the way for the formation of an independent international inquiry commission -- the highest-level probe that can be ordered by the council -- “to investigate all alleged violations and abuses... in the context of the Russian Federation’s aggression against Ukraine”, reported

news agency AFP. Of the 47-seat council, at least 32 members voted to establish the highest-level probe possible into alleged rights violations, reported AFP. Russia and Eritrea voted against the motion. “I thank all those who voted for the right cause,” AFP quoted the Ukrainian ambassador as saying. The Friday’s vote also calls for the appointment of three investigators to “establish the facts, circumstances, and root causes of any such violations and abuses,” and to gather evidence “with a view to ensuring that those responsible are held accountable. The recent setback for Russia follows the UN General Assembly’s own rebuke issued on Wednesday.

Agency News: New Delhi The Technology Development Board (TDB) under the Ministry of Science and Technology will provide Rs 5 crore as support to a startup called Skyshade Daylight Private Limited for developing new technologies for 24×7 basement illumination. The company works on lighting technologies to reduce carbon footprint and improve energy efficiency. The MoU was signed on Thursday in the presence of the Union Science Minister Dr Jitendra Singh. He said the project would cost Rs 10 crore, of which Rs 5 crore will be given by TDB. He said the startup has come up with two innovative solutions

– human centric-climate adaptive building facades and central integrated daylighting system. These products are easily affordable, adaptable and economically viable The solar energy spectrum has 45 per cent energy as visible light, and this can be used to harvest building illumination for about 9-11 hours a day. Singh said the proposed technologies harvest huge quantities of sunlight for a building which reduces electrical lighting energy consumption by 70-80 per cent, besides reducing air-conditioning needs. The technology used is completely indigenous, economically viable and easy to deploy, and needs minimal maintenance.

Meghalaya has withdrawn consent to the CBI, becoming the ninth state to do so in the past few years. The move comes despite the Conrad Sangma-led National People’s Party being a part of the BJP’s National Democratic Alliance. Barring Mizoram, all other states that have withdrawn consent to the CBI are ruled by Opposition parties. “It is true that Meghalaya has withdrawn consent to the CBI. We do not know the reasons,” a government official said. While Meghalaya Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said he was “not in a position to comment” on the development, calls to Meghalaya Chief Minister Sangma went unanswered. However, speaking to local reporters outside Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on Friday afternoon, CM Sangma termed the development a “normal procedure.” “The decision was

Take Us Out Of RTI, Say Armed Forces In Fresh Appeal In the proposal submitted earlier this year, the armed forces - the army, navy, air force and coast guard - say want to be included in the exempted list of agencies like security and intelligence organisations. Agency News: New Delhi The armed forces have made a fresh appeal to be excluded from the Right to Information or RTI Act, saying that they have not only found instances where the transparency law could be harming national security but compromising the

chain of command as well. This time the appeal has come in the form of a proposal filed before the government’s Committee of Secretaries which includes the top officials of prominent ministries like Home, Defence, Revenue, Information Technology, as well as the Cabinet Secretary.

The Department of Military Affairs, a part of the Defence Ministry, had sent a similar proposal to the government last year. The push had been renewed by the country’s first Chief of Defence Staff General

Bipin Rawat citing the security of the nation, the need to defend it from external aggression and disturbance of peace and tranquillity within the country. An early bid to have the armed forces exempt.

made quite a long time ago. I can’t remember the date, it was done a very long time back,” Sangma said, and added: “Therefore, it is a normal thing…lot of states have taken this decision, and it is aligned with that. Anybody who comes in here, has to take consent from the state. That’s all. It is a normal procedure.” Earlier, besides Mizoram, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Kerala had withdrawn consent to the central probe agency. The withdrawal of consent means that the agency will not be able to investigate any case in the state without the state government’s permission. Mizoram was the first state to withdraw this in 2015. The state was ruled by the Congress at the time and the chief minister then was Lal Thanhawla. In 2018, the Mizo National Front (MNF) under Zoramthanga came to power, but despite his party being an NDA ally, the consent to the CBI was not restored.

‘People outside accuse India of not focussing on Tests. They’re wrong Agency News: New Delhi Team India returned to action in Tests on Friday when the side took on Sri Lanka in the first match of the series in Mohali. The game saw Virat Kohli reaching the 100th Test landmark and also remains special for Indian cricket, as Rohit Sharma started his tenure as the country’s 35th captain in the longest format of the game. Rohit succeeded Kohli, who is largely credited with India’s enormous rise in Tests over the past few years. When Kohli was felicitated on reaching the 100 Test landmark ahead of the Mohali Test, he pointed out that one of the “takeaways” for the younger generation from his career could be

his dedication towards the longest format. During the lunch break in the Mohali Test, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar – who was the first Indian to reach 100 Tests – lauded Kohli and insisted that the country is “very much invested” in Test cricket. “The thing that you need to consider is that Test cricket was played considerably more during the time when the first 10-11 Indian players reached 100 Tests. White-ball cricket wasn’t played that much. But since 20082009, it went the opposite way. White-ball cricket was played more and Tests were left behind. So, if someone needed to give importance to the game, he had to play Test cricket,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports.
