Delhi mayor Shelly Oberoi being ‘remote-controlled’ by AAP leaders for civic governance, alleges BJP

Agency News: New Delhi

The BJP on Saturday alleged that Delhi mayor Shelly Oberoi sits like a “dummy” in municipal meetings and, instead of exercising her own wisdom for civic governance, is being “remote-controlled” by senior AAP leaders for decision-making.

Senior BJP leader and former South Delhi mayor Kamaljeet Sehrawat made the accusations during a press conference at the saffron party’s Delhi unit headquarters. There was no immediate reaction from Oberoi or the AAP. Oberoi either “remains mute” or reacts with a sense of delay, as if she has received “some instructions” from AAP leaders like Atishi, who is mostly “remotely feeding information” to her over mobile, Sehrawat alleged. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday appealed to the people of poll-bound Karnataka to give his Aam Aadmi Party a chance to give a corruption-free government for five years. Addressing his maiden election public meeting in Karnataka, the AAP supremo said the party has zero tolerance for corruption as a minister and an MLA in party-ruled Punjab were jailed. Taking a dig at the ruling BJP in Karnataka, Kejriwal alleged that there is a 40 per cent commission government running in the state. In this context, he mentioned the recovery of Rs

Indian economy growing faster than China’s. But if you look at big picture, neither’s winning yet

For two years in a row, the Indian economy has grown faster than China’s. The 7 per cent projected for this fiscal year compares with an uncharacteristically low 3.0 per cent for China in calendar year 2022. Similarly, last year’s 9.1 per cent for India trumped China’s 8.1 per cent. This comes on top of the relative performance of the two most populous countries in the five years before there was any sign of Covid (the calendar years 2014-18, and their corresponding fiscal years for India).

That is when India outpaced China for the first time — averaging 7.4 per cent growth, while the neighbouring country managed 7 per cent. Thus began the narrative of India as the world’s fastest-growing large economy, dethroning China after some three decades when Beijing had cornered all the glory. But as always with such numbers, the story line can change when you play around with the period chosen for study. What’s missing in the picture presented in the previous paragraph are the two intervening years of 2019 and 2020, when China managed to do better than India; and to do so by such a wide margin as to flip the two countries’ positions when it comes to longer-term growth averages. China grew by 6 per cent in 2019 compared to India’s 3.9 per cent for 2019-20, and by 2.2 per cent in the first Covid year when India’s gross domestic product shrank by 5.8 per cent. Taking the full nine years (2014-22) together, therefore, China pipped India to the post with average growth of just over 6 per cent, compared to India’s 5.7 per cent. Even if one looks at just the last four years, starting from the pre-Covid year, China outpaced India. This somewhat uncertain result of the race, when one tries to gauge which really is the world’s fastest-growing large economy, should make one cautious about projections for the future.

India vs Australia: Rohit Sharma sticks to game plan Steve Smith’s fun with ‘chess pieces’

Agency News : New Delhi

India are unlikely to stop asking the curators from preparing pitches that turn from Day I itself despite the loss to Australia in Indore. The team management believes turning pitches give them their best chance to win Test matches at home.

“Honestly speaking, these are the kind of pitches we want to play on,” India captain Rohit Sharma said after the loss. “This is our strength, so when you’re playing at your home, you always play

to your strength, not worry about what people outside are talking about. “We want to play to our strength, and that strength is spin bowling and that batting depth. And everyone uses that advantage outside (India), so what’s wrong in that? We’ve got to do that as well, especially when we’re getting results. If we were not getting the results, I would think otherwise, but I think we are playing well, we are getting the results that we want.” India know they can’t expect their batters to score runs consistently on these pitches.

“People will have the phase where the runs are not coming, but that doesn’t really matter, honestly,” Rohit said. “We do understand the nature of the pitch, the challenge of playing on these pitches, so consistent runs from the batters will not come.

Agency News : New Delhi

Steve Smith loves captaining in India and likens it to a game of chess, pushing one to stay a step ahead of the match. He too prefers playing on spin-friendly tracks rather than placid wickets that takes the game to full five days. “They are pretty hard to come by. For us to get on top in this game particularly after losing the toss, it shows the talent in our group and the belief we have got in ourselves,” Smith said. “We screwed it up in Delhi, letting that slip, but we had a good break and good preparation coming here. “It was about getting our mental state right. It was about trusting ourselves and our methods. It was about having faith that we will succeed

and taking the result out of play. “ We are pleased to have qualified for the final of the World Test Championship, which has obviously been on our radar for a little while. To tick that off is worth celebrating for this team,” Smith said. “No, my time is done. It’s Paddy’s team now. I’m glad I’m able to stand in this week in the circumstances obviously with Paddy going home.

EPFO Higher Pension: Procedural Complexities Making It Virtually Impossible To Apply

Agency News : New Delhi

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has enabled subscribers and their employers to jointly apply for higher pension under the employees’ pension scheme (EPS). However, according to a Times of India report, procedural complexities are making it virtually impossible to apply. The EPFO has not received a single application since the inception of the scheme in March 1996 for permission under a clause now made mandatory to claim the benefit of higher pension, according to the report quoting response to an RTI query on February 3. The Employees’ Pension (Amendment) Scheme, 2014, had raised the pensionable salary cap to Rs 15,000 a month from Rs 6,500 a month, and allowed members along

with their employers to contribute 8.33 per cent of their actual salaries (if it exceeded the cap) towards EPS. However, this can be done only if the employer and the employee had received prior permission from the EPFO. According to the TOI report quoting the RTI response on how many employees or members have excersised this option since March 1996, the EPFO said “As per available office records, there are ‘NO’ joint options/ undertaking received in writing under Para 26(6) of EPF Scheme, 1952, during the period from March 16, 1996, to December 31, 2002.”

Agency News : New Delhi

The government slashed windfall profit tax on export of diesel to its lowest of Rs 0.50 per litre and nil on jet fuel (ATF) while the levy on domestically produced crude oil was marginally increased, according to an official order. The levy on crude oil produced by companies such as Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has hiked to Rs 4,400 per tonne from Rs 4,350 per tonne, the order dated March 3 said. Crude oil pumped out of the ground and from below the seabed is refined and converted into fuels like petrol, diesel and aviation turbine fuel (ATF). The new tax rates come into effect from March 4, the order said.

This is the second reduction in rates in a fortnight. Rates were cut on February 16. The export levy on diesel and ATF is the lowest since the tax was introduced in July last year. The tax rates are reviewed every fortnight based on average oil prices in the previous two weeks. At that time, export duties of Rs 6 per litre each were levied on petrol and ATF and Rs 13 a litre on diesel. A Rs 23,250 per tonne windfall profit tax on domestic crude production was also levied.
