The Centre’s air quality panel on Sunday directed authorities in the Delhi-NCR to ban nonessential construction work in the region under stage III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). Demolition work will also be banned under stage III. The move was prompted by the Delhi’s receding air quality as the 24-hour average air quality index stood at 407 at 4 pm on Sunday. The AQI in Delhi has slipped into ‘Severe’ category owing to calm wind and stable atmospheric conditions. Owing to this, the sub-committee decided that all actions as envisaged under Stage III of the GRAP will be implemented. Under stage III, a strict ban on construction and demolition activities in the NCR will be enforced. However, the ban won’t apply on essential projects and non-polluting activities such as plumbing, carpentry, interior

decoration and electrical works. The construction ban will not be applicable to projects concerning national security, defence, railways, healthcare, railways, airports, and metro rail among others. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) had directed authorities on November 14 to revoke the curbs enforced in the Delhi-NCR under stage III of GRAP, including a ban on non-essential construction activities. The decision to implement stage III was taken by the sub-committee in its meeting that took place on Sunday. The Commission for Air Quality Management issued an order on Wednesday, saying the target was that only CNG and e-autos ply in the NCR from January 1, 2027.

The charge sheet will be presented at a special court of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in Kolkata. Although ED officials were tightlipped over the detailed contents of the charge sheet, sources said that a major part of it will relate to the nexus of proceeds going to the bank accounts of Bhattacharya and his family members from different private teachers’ training colleges in the state. The statements and documents given by Tapas Mondal, the president of All Bengal Teachers’ Training Achievers’

Association (ABTTAA), an umbrella organisation of such private teachers training colleges, and a prime witness in the teachers’ recruitment scam as well as the statements given by some representatives of such private institutes will be the supporting and supplementary evidences on this count. Another point that might be highlighted in the ED charge sheet will be the evidences accumulated by the Central agency sleuths on how Manik Bhattacharya kept a particular joint account held by his wife Satarupa Bhattacharya and one individual, Mrityunjoy Chakraborty, even after years of the latter’s demise by using his identity proofs as KYC. What makes HDFC Bank and HDFC merger a win-win bet? CFO S Vaidyanathan explains

HDFC Bank on April 4 announced that the housing finance major HDFC will be merged with the banking major. Since then, shares of HDFC Bank have risen nearly 3 per cent while the benchmark S&P BSE Sensex has gained 3.7 per cent. Interestingly, the S&P BSE Bankex, which is the sectoral barometer for the banking sector, is up over 11 per cent in the same period, clearly showing that most of the banking majors had a good run on the bourses since April. The going has been rough for the banking entity that was set up in 1994 – among the first ones to get a license from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to set up a private sector bank – as the shares have underperformed the benchmark 30-share Sensex in the previous two years and by a wide margin as well. To be sure, HDFC Bank shares gained nearly 20 per cent in 2019 when the Sensex moved up less than 15 per cent. There have been occasions in the past when the private sector lender, which has nearly 6,500 branches and around 19,000 ATMs spread across 3,226 towns/cities, has outperformed the benchmarks in a calendar year. HDFC Bank now eyes a bigger and larger role within the banking sector and the economy as a whole with the ongoing merger with its housing finance entity. The bank, on its part, believes that it is a play on the Indian economy, which assumes significance as it is widely believed that India is poised for robust growth in the coming years. “We are well positioned to capture the expanding loan growth in the banking system with a complete suite of products that cater to the wholesale, SME as well as retail customers,” says Srinivasan Vaidyanathan, Chief Financial Officer, HDFC Bank. The CFO further highlights the fact that the liabilities of the housing finance entity will mature over a period of time, which will act as a cushion. The bank has also enhanced deposit mobilisation and the expanded branch network backed by improved sales processes will only lead to higher deposits needed to fund the additional liabilities, he adds. Pointing out that Congress general secretary in-charge organisation, K C Venugopal, was in Jaipur last week, Pilot said there was a long discussion on various aspects of the yatra and how to mobilise all workers and lakhs of people were set to join it.

SPORTS - BUSINESS Resrve Bank of India likely to Centrum to buy NATRUST First ODI: Bangladesh World Cup: Luis Enrique defeat India by 1 wicket opens a window to his world moderate interest hike: Experts business in Mirpur Agency News : Mirpur

Bangladesh’s last wicket pair of Mehidy Hasan Miraj and Mustafizur Rahaman pulled off an absolute heist with a thrilling 51-run stand as India choked during final half an hour to lose a low-scoring opening ODI by one wicket here on Sunday. While India produced yet another poor batting show which saw them get all-out for 186 in 41.2 overs, the bowlers did a splendid job to reduce Bangladesh to 136 for 9 in the 40th over. However KL Rahul, who was entrusted with keeping duties to fit him and another veteran Shikhar Dhawan in the same XI, dropped an aerial sitter when Bangladesh still needed 32 runs. Washington

Sundar also didn’t go for an easy catch at third man earning the wrath of skipper Rohit Sharma as Miraj (38 not out off 39 balls) along with Mustafizur (10 not out) got the team past the finishing line in exactly 46 overs. The 51-run stand between Miraj and Mustafizur was Bangladesh’s highest 10th wicket partnership and the fourth-highest 10th wicket partnership in a successful ODI chase. On a track that assisted both seamers and spinners.

France will need patience against Poland in last 16 clash Agency News : New Delhi France will start their World Cup last-16 clash as overwhelming favourites in Sunday’s round of 16 clash at the Al Thumama Stadium. But their opponents Poland cannot be just written off. Even though they looked ordinary against Argentina in their last group-phase game and seemed content playing for a draw, they do have what it takes to stage an upset. Besides, in the knockout stage, anything is possible as one gross error too can prove to be very costly. France will enter the contest with most of their regulars having recharged their batteries, but patience, more than energy, might be key against

Poland. “They have experienced players. “Obviously, Lewandowski is the standout player, one of the best strikers in the world,” said coach Didier Deschamps. “We should not underestimate them.” Forward Kingsley Coman was equally cautious. “It’s a World Cup game, so anything is possible. Being the favourites doesn’t mean anything.” Lewandowski, on his part, looked mostly pedestrian against Argentina the other night. Yet, most of France’s talk ahead of their last-16 clash has been about how Les Bleus will handle the Barcelona star. The defending champions are also well aware there is much more to the Poles than their ace striker.

After three back-to-back 50 basis points hike in interest rates, the Reserve Bank may opt for a lower rate increase of 25-35 bps in lending rates at its coming monetary policy review on Wednesday amid retail inflation showing signs of moderation and the need to push growth, according to experts. since May has increased the repo or benchmark lending rates by 190 basis points, to calm down inflation which has remained above its comfort level of 6 per cent since January. Madan Sabnavis, Chief Economist, Bank of Baroda, said the RBI will be presenting the monetary policy against the backdrop of GDP growth slowing down as well as inflation being high above 6 per cent. “We do believe that the MPC will continue with rate hikes this time though the magnitude will be lower -- probably 25-35 bps. More specifically we do believe that the terminal repo rate for the financial year will be 6.5 per cent, which means there will be one more rate hike in February,” he said. Sabnavis further said there will not be any surprise for the market just as is the case for global markets too, which are now expecting more moderate increases in interest rates by the Fed.
