IN WHAT is being seen as a gesture to protect “at-risk” Afghan nationals, the Indian government has decided to offer an additional year-long training programme to about 80 cadets from the Afghan National Security Forces who have just completed their training in Indian military academies. With the fall of Kabul in mid-August and the Taliban taking over the government in Afghanistan, these cadets are considered to be “at-risk” if they choose to return home. “Eighty young Afghan cadets who
recently graduated from various military academies in India have been offered a 12-month training programme in Effective English Communication for Business and Office,” the Afghan Embassy said in a statement. It said the programme begins on February 7 and the cadets will be placed in three different institutes, where they will be provided accommodation and a monthly allowance. The training is being provided under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Programme (ITEC) of the Ministry of External Affairs.

The Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s speech in Lok Sabha on February 2 during the debateon President’s address, stands out as a major policy programme which has all the points foremerging as a common minimum programme for the political parties who are interested infighting BJP unitedly in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Rahul has put forward his points withclarity which have commonality of views with both the regional non-BJP parties and the Left.There are three main features of Rahul Gandhi’s speech. First the attack on the veryconcept of Hindutva and here he is unsparing in taking a position against the RSS and theSangh Parivar. He focused on acute employment crisis asalso the continuing distress in the rural areas. His emphasis was pro poor and on the liens ofthe policies which were recommended by the advisory council of Sonia Gandhi during UPAregime.Rahul Gandhi has definitely positioned himself against the big corporates and this delinkshimself from the economic policy line of Dr. Manmohan Singh-P Chidambaram in theCongress Party. The Congress is now fund starved and there are some suggestions thatRahul should change his anti-corporate tone, otherwise collection of funds for elections willbe difficult. The BJP has got high backing from big corporates and the party also getsmassive resources from overseas. Congress is now no match to BJP in terms of financialmuscle power.But Rahul should ignore this pressure, if he believes in what he is saying in public. Rightnow, BJP is getting huge funds because BJP is in power and due to the weakness of the opposition, there is an impression that the BJP will remain in power for long. Indiancorporates towtow to power not to ideology. As soon as the power balance shifts in favour ofthe anti-BJP opposition, the funds flow from the corporates will also change its course. It isonly on the basis of making the anti-BJP front stronger and sustainable that the Congresswill be able to improve its financial muscle power. The Congress should tap lakhs of MSMEswhich have been suffering due to the pro-big business policies of the Modi government. Thissector, if properly cultivated will be the huge source of funds.In the Congress Party these days, there is no ideological training programme. The partyveterans have been reconciled to making efforts to remain in power or to get back to powerwhere dethroned. There is demoralization in the ranks as the Party is out of power at thecentre for long years and in many of the states for decades. Rahul has put out a strategywhich has to be translated into concrete action programme at Party level also. How far,Rahul will be able to retain the core value of his vision, has to be seen. The Congressorganizational elections including President, are due in September this year. Whether Rahulwill give concrete shape to his vision by then, is a big question.The third is Rahul’s emphasis on the strengthening of the concept of federalism which hasgot a big hit during BJP regime. Agency News: New Delhi Foreign banks expanded their branch network and employee base in India marginally whereas overseas staff strength and number of branches of Indian banks and their subsidiaries recorded a decline during 202021, as per a Reserve Bank of India (RBI) survey.According to the RBI, the number of foreign branches of Indian banks declined from 137 in 2019-20 to 121 in 2020-21 and foreign subsidiaries fell from 381 to 377. The decline coincided with the Covid-19 pandemic which hit most parts of the world in 2020.While credit extended by foreign branches of Indian banks fell from Rs 7,34,663 crore to Rs 6,84,808 crore in FY21, deposits fell from Rs 4,25,994 crore to Rs 3,98,630 crore. Deposits of subsidiaries of Indian banks also fell from Rs 1,12,117 crore to Rs 1,08,969 crore in 2020-21.

Punjab National Bank cuts savings account interest Agency News:New Delhi The Punjab National Bank (PNB) has reduced the interest on savings accounts, further limiting the earnings on the money deposited by the users. According to the new slabs announced by the bank, those with balance upto ₹10 lakh will earn an interest of 2.75 per cent. A report in Livemint said that other deposit slabs too have received an interest cut. The account holders having a balance between ₹10 lakh and ₹500 crore will get 2.80 per cent interest, the Livemint report further said. Those with a balance of more than ₹500 crore will earn 3.25 per cent interest,
the report further said.PNB had last cut the interest on savings accounts in December and was offering 2.80% on accounts having less than ₹10 lakh and 2.85% on savings accounts having more than RS 10 lakh to and below ₹500 crore.This is continuing with the trends in the last few years, which has seen a steady decline following various steps taken by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to push liquidity into the financial system.
