‘ashamed’ Rahul for backing ‘anti-national’ JNU students

Ashamed Of Rahul’s Visit To JNU Agency | Vrindavan

March 06, 2016, Sunday

BJP chief Amit Shah on Saturday attacked Congress over the JNU row, saying it should be “ashamed” of Rahul Gandhi’s visit to the campus and questioned whether “anti-national slogans” can be called freedom of speech. Addressing a meeting of Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha, BJP’s youth wing, he said the JNU row was about the party’s core issue of nationalism and invoked its Ram Janambhumi campaign

to buttress his point besides its role in Goa and Hyderabad liberation movement. “A strange atmosphere has been created. Anti-national slogans are being projected as freedom of expression… Congress should be ashamed that its vice president goes to the campus and says these (slogans) should be heard as there is freedom of expression. “If these slogans are freedom of expression, then what is treason?” he said seeking Congress chief Sonia Gandhi’s views on

whether she agrees with her son on this. Shah asked party workers to work hard to ensure that

‘Disturbing inputs’ about terror attack, says Army commander Agency | Pathankot

There are some “disturbing” inputs about a terror attack in India aimed at creating the “maximum media impact” during the Shivratri festival and the ongoing Parliament session, a top Army commander said in Pathankot on Saturday with an assurance that steps have been taken to deal with it. “There are security-related problems today. You know, Maha Shivratri is coming. There are inputs which are disturbing but notwithstanding that extra care has been taken,” Western Army Command-

“In five years there could be development and high growth rate and borders could be made safe but if India has to be ‘vish-

waguru’, then it is a must that BJP is in government for 25 years,” he said. Underlining party’s Hindutva credentials, he said Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended Ganga aarti with pride and went to Pashupati Nath temple in Nepal to seek blessing. The party wants India to have top IT and MBA professionals, who also seek their “inspiration” from Swami Vivekananda, he said. The BJP chief also made fun of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to attack Congress and hail Modi’s

leadership, saying Singh visited more countries than Modi but his tours made little impact. “He would read from two pages he carried with him which were written in English. At times, he would read the speech meant for Thailand in Malaysia and the one for Malaysia in Thailand… Modiji spoke in Hindi in the UN and the whole country felt proud,” Shah said. The biggest work the Modi government has done is to make the country’s borders safe, he claimed.

AP Dimri from the School of Environmental Sciences assumed office as the Chief Proctor on March 1. Repeated calls and text messages to Ku-

mar for comments on the resignation went unanswered. JNU is caught in a row over an event on campus against the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru during which “anti-national” slogans were allegedly raised. Kumar was also member of the disciplinary committee instituted by the university to probe the February 9 event. A day later, broadening the panel, a three-member committee was appointed. However, under pressure from teachers and students, the university had added two more members to the panel.

maximum media impact and when can you create a media impact when Parliament is in session, when a festival is taking place, so both happen to be going on.. So that is why, there are inputs but we have taken steps against that. I must assure you of that,” he said.

Amid speculation that JNU’s Chief Proctor quit from the post over handling of the Afzal Guru row, JNU on Saturday said he had resigned much before the controversy broke out. A section of teachers and students have been claiming that Krishna Kumar, former Chief Proctor, who demitted office on February 29, resigned from the post as the administration was pressurising him about the inquiry of the panel investigating the row over an event against

2 / Dt. 06-03-2016, Sunday Editors’ Picks sunday, march 06, 2016 Posters in Delhi: Shoot Kanhaiya Kumar, get a reward of Rs 11 lakh

Posters offering a reward of Rs 11 lakh to anyone who shoots dead JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar, who was released on bail two days ago, have surfaced in the national capital. The small posters bear the name of the Purvanchal Sena, an organisation which claims to work for the people of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, and its president Adarsh Sharma and were seen at various places in New Delhi. “Whoever shoots JNUSU president and traitor Kanhaiya Kumar will be rewarded Rs 11 lakh from the Purvanchal Sena,” the posters in Hindi read. Sharma said on Saturday that they do have faith in the judiciary but want to deliver ‘quick’ justice. “We want the traitor dead. He has insulted mother India and raised anti-national slogans. We have faith in the court but it takes a long time for a judgement to come. We want to ensure there is a quick decision and hence, we have announced this prize money of Rs 11 lakh to be given to whosoever kills him,”. Kumar, Jawaharlal Nehru University students’ union president, was arrested on February 12 for allegedly raising anti-national slogans inside the campus during an event to mark the third anniversary of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru’s hanging on February 9. Sharma said they have put up posters in the national capital to announce their decision. “He is a traitor and this is what should be done to him,” he added. “We work for the people of UP and Bihar. Kanhaiya’s house is just 10 km away from my home in Bihar. Our land does not produce such anti-nationals. This is why I have decided to do this,” he said. Police officers said they have taken note of it and initiated an inquiry into the matter. “Action will be taken against persons who have put up such posters that incite violence. A case will soon be registered. We are looking into the matter,” a senior police officer said. Delhi Police have also asked university officials to inform them about Kumar’s movements outside the campus. In a letter to JNU authorities, DCP (south) Prem Nath wrote that the SHO of Vasant Kunj (North) police station should be informed well in time about “the movements and visits of Kumar outside the campus, including nature of visit and travel mode, so that necessary security and preventive measures may be taken to prevent any untoward incident”. The move comes in view of a court directive after the attack on Kumar at Patiala House court complex on February 17, which said police must ensure that none of the students arrested in connection with the sedition case suffer even a scratch.

Rocky Handsome star John Abraham: I am an underdog like idol Stallone Agency | Mumbai

Bollywood actor John Abraham has carved a niche for himself in the industry yet the Madras Cafe star feels he is an underdog. “I have always been an underdog. I like being that way. I like playing that role. I have always been influenced by films like that (of underdogs). We root for them. I know my audience will root for me,” John told reporters here at the trailer launch of Rocky Handsome. “After my first film, I was told I need to go back but I have been here for 13 years or so, and it

is because of audience. I will always struggle,” he said. John sees Sylvester Stallone as his idol and was disappointed when the Hollywood legend did not win the supporting actor awards at the Os-

The ticket windows showed no promise with the film managing a decent fare only in the

interiors of Delhi and UP, Bihar and CI. Overall, the film grossed around Rs 4.25-4.50 crore nett which is an extremely low figure given that it had almost no competition at the cash registers. Plus, it had an open window with only Sonam Kapoor’s Neerja running at plexes which also has completed its two weeks run and has faced a drop in its collections.

Agency | Beijing China’s leadership tried to quell anxiety about its slowing economy following financial turmoil and rising labor unrest as it cut its growth target Saturday and promised to open the oil and telecom industries to private competitors in sweeping industrial reforms. Premier Li Keqiang announced a growth target of 6.5 to 7 percent in a report to the national legislature on Beijing’s plans for the year. That was down from last year’s “about 7 percent” and reflects the ruling Communist Party’s marathon efforts to replace a worn-out model based on trade and investment with more self-sustaining growth driven by consumer spending. Li, the country’s top economic official, warned that China faces “more and tougher problems,” including weak export demand. But he expressed confidence that communist leaders can maintain stable growth.

Central trade unions on Saturday announced their decision to go ahead with a proposed nationwide strike on March 29 citing failure of talks with Coal India’s management and the Ministry of Coal over auction of blocks of the dry fuel to private companies. An estimated 3 lakh permanent miners and 1.80 lakh private outsourcing workers of Coal India collieries would go on strike in protest against auctioning of coal blocks to private companies, General Secretary of Rashtriya Colliery Mazdoor Sangh (RCMS) A K Jha said here. He made the announcement after a meeting of Joint Front comprising central trade unions INTUC, AITUC, CITU and HMS. Mr Jha said three rounds of talks last month with officers of CIL and ministry of coal could not resolve the issue. “Coal India director personnel (DP) made positive response at bipartite meeting but the management did not issue notification. So recognised central trade unions resolved to stick to their decision of strike,” he said.

that a Bangladeshi fan has resorted to such tactics on the social media to target the Indian Cricket Team. In 2015, after the Indian batsmen struggled against Mustafizur Rahman, who had made his debut during that series, a Bangladeshi newspaper posted a photo of half-shaved heads of the Indian players, in order to show the after effects of Mustafizur’s ‘cutters’ or slow deliveries. The rivalry had taken a fierce

form when Rohit was given not-out when he was caught off this delivery in the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup quarter-final. Rohit was caught off what some believed to be a legal delivery, whereas the umpires had ruled it as a ‘no-ball’ for being above waist height. Rohit went on to score a hundred in that game and India defeated Bangladesh to proceed to the semi-final of the World Cup. Some members of the Bangladeshi fraternity, it seems, are still upset with an incident that happened almost a year back. Thereafter, Bangladesh defeated India 2-1 in a bilateral ODI series at home, wherein, Mustafizur Rahman tormented the Indian batsmen with his subtle variations and pace.

Aaron Finch urges Australia to tone down bravado while facing spinners Agency | Durban

Australia swashbuckling batsman Aaron Finch has called on his side to play ‘smarter’ cricket when facing spinners, following their three-wicket loss to South Africa in the opening Twenty20 of the three-match series in Durban. Despite making a solid start, Australia failed to sustain momentum as the tourists were reeling at 104 for six in the 13.2 overs, thanks to an incisive spell from South African leg-spinner Imran Tahir (3-21) and frugal fast bowling in the middle overs. South Africa chased down the

target of 158 with four balls remaining, with explosive batsman David Miller making an unbeaten 53 off 35 balls on Saturday. ”I think there were some times when our ego probably took over a little bit,” Finch was quoted as saying by cricket. com.au. “When you’re playing against a quality

spinner on a wicket that’s assisting him, we probably had to play a little bit smarter. Myself included. If I hit that full toss for six it could be a different scenario, you get Imran on the back foot. But we know once he gets his tail up and he’s got some new batters to bowl to.

Agency | Mirpur Stakes minimal and virtually nothing to play for, Sri Lanka and Pakistan entertained a turnout of over 10,000 at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium, striking form with the bat. Batting had been their bugbear, running into this final group league game of the tournament. They had already crashed out of the Asia Cup. Pressure gone, entertainment became the buzzword. Not that a flat track had been laid out, but the batsmen didn’t have the fear of failure. In the end, Pakistan won

the match by six wickets with four balls to spare. Tillakaratne Dilshan led the entertainment pack after Pakistan won the toss and sent the opposition in. He was the star of the show, carrying the bat and making 75 not out off 56 balls. The 39-year-old was finally in his element, countering the dangerous Mohammad Amir with aplomb. Not that he tried something out of the box against the Pakistan quick. Dilshan mostly stayed on the front foot – even the pull shot he played to the deep square leg fence was

off the front foot – and looked for the scoring opportunities. It put Amir under pressure, which resulted in a terrific contest between bat and ball. It was Dilshan’s approach that stood out. He scored 23 runs off the 17 deliveries he faced from Amir and always showed positive intent. So far, the batsmen’s treatment – save Virat Kohli – to the left-arm fast bowler had bordered on reverential. Dilshan changed that, just ahead of the World T20, and the Sri Lankan team management would be happy.

The AIFF has slapped a fine of Rs 50 lakh on FC Goa for boycotting the prize distribution ceremony following their 2-3 loss to Chennaiyin FC in the final of the second edition of Indian Super League football in December 2015. Gujarat Quota stir: Man takes own life to make govt ‘wiser’ Upleta town also observed a bandh while its major villages like Bhayavadar and Moti Paneli remained shut as well

Upleta and Dhoraji towns of Rajkot remained shut on Friday to mourn death of a youth who had allegedly committed suicide in a guest house “in support” of the ongoing Patidar quota stir on Thursday. Markets remained partially shut in Dhoraji, the town where Prakash Shaani (36), a Patidar youth had allegedly ended his life by consuming poison the previous day. Shaani, a resident of Moti Paneli village in neighbouring Upleta taluak, had checked in a guest house in Dhoraji in the morning and allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide. He was found dead in his guest house room at 5:30 pm. Upleta town also observed a bandh while its major villages like Bhayavadar and Moti Paneli remained shut as well. While booking the room in Dhoraji, the youth had told the

Vasoya, who is a distant relative of Shaani, said the youth was active in the stir. “Panel is the epicentre of quota stir in that part of Saurashtra and Prakash was active in the stir locally. He comes from a better-off family and he was not going through any financial crisis. But his death is very sad. Such acts by our youths cannot be justified because they leave their families in the lurch,” said Vasoya said.

Much to the chagrin of smart city enthusiasts in the Gujarat government, the Government of India has officially admitted, with specific reference to Ahmedabad, that it does not have any fixed definition of smart cities, which it wants to set up at 100 different urban locations across India. In reply to a political activist based in Ahmedabad, who wished

son Azhar Shafiq as new trustees of Chokan Shah Peer-ni-Dargah. The new trustees on June 19, 2013, submitted an application to the Wakf board seeking permission for sale of the property. The Wakf board in 2014 allowed the new trustees to go ahead with the sale on the condition that the buyer would give one flat to the Wakf board after development of the property. But the original trustee — Amanullah Hafizullah Khateeb — challenged the sale of the property, contending that the amended wakf law of November 2013 did not permit sale of wakf properties.

Ahmedabad conducted one of the largest networking conferences in Ahmedabad today. Addressing the audience, Mr. R Chandrashekhar, President, Nasscom at TiECON Ahmedabad 2016 said “The startup model is creating significant growth opportunities for every stakeholder within the ecosystem. The ecosystem is in momentum with growing interest from corporate and other stake holders. Startups are raising the bars high at global canvas. Funding is estimated to grow by 125%,

regarding the startups, Mr. Chandrasekhar said “ States are strengthening the value propositions for startups, by offering incubation, state tax exemption, employment linked allowance, training allowance. 66% of startups are concentrated in top 3 cities of Bangalore, NCR and Mumbai, we need to take them to other corners also”. Building an ecosystem to encourage entrepreneurship and methods to fortify Gujarat’s importance as a partner to venture capital funds was laid threadbare, as experts gathered at TiECON, the flagship event of The In-

to know from the Government of India why only a particular area located next to the Gandhi Ashram has been included in the smart city project of Ahmedabad, and whether there were any real estate interests behind it, the Union Ministry of Urban Development’s Smart Cities division said, it is not prescribing “any particular model to be adopted by the smart cities.” Roshan Shah, in his query to the Ministry of Urban

Development, citing a news item in a prominent English daily, said, “Not entire Ahmedabad is taken into consideration for smart city. The Rampir Tekra slum area is low level area which is very difficult to modernize or developed as a smart city project. It is failure from the beginning.” Referring to the area surrounded by Gandhi Ashram, which is to be developed as smart city, Shah said, “I have come to know that only the area around Vadaj will be developed under smart city. There is absolutely no logic behind picking this area except to forcefully vacate poor from the place and grab their land.” Referring to a public interest litiga-

tion (PIL) pending in the Gujarat High Court, Shah said, “Even Gandhi Ashram land which was encroached and ordered to be vacated in 14920/2003 PIL in Gujarat High Court is not vacated.” He wished to know whether “due diligence” has been done before picking up the Vadaj area only?” Referring to the allegations flying high in the state about Gujarat chief minister Anandiben Patel’s family having real estate interests in the Vadaj area, he wondered, “Is the Ministry of Urban Development convinced that this is the right area and there is no mala fide intent of Gujarat CM family here or displaced dwellers will be taken care of very well?”
