Gainer In The Russia-Ukraine War

As the Russian invasion of Ukraine rages on and a catastrophe looks near than ever, Twitteris where the latest news, analysis, and perspectives can be found. These are coming fromthe powerful and the most cerebral people of our time. It’s fascinating and engrossing toread the tweets, for example, from Balaji Srinivasan. Wikipedia describes him as a serialentrepreneur and essayist. For this out-and-out American intellectual and entrepreneur ofIndian origin, the Wikipedia description is way too inadequate for the public persona that heholds. Balaji Srinivasan has a BS, MS, and Ph.D. in Electrical and Chemical Engineering, andthanks to his ability and penchant for writing, he is virtually the friend, philosopher, guide, and a likely investor for every startup in the crypto space. Once Chief Technology Officer ofUSbased and Nasdaq-listed crypto exchange Coinbase, the Donald Trump administration in2017 had considered appointing Srinivasan the Commissioner of US Commissioner of Foodand Drugs that is head of FDA.Many Indians might not know as Srinivasan hardly interacts on issues other than crypto. Butwithin the crypto space, he has a large fan following for the way he dissects the future. Forexample, last night he re-tweeted a 2020 tweet that read: The future is Communist Capitalvs Woke Capital vs Crypto Capital. In many of his essays, Balaji has explained that new nations and cities would be created invirtual words which would be more efficient than the current political nations and cities. Hegoes to the extent of saying that much of Africa will be reorganized into countries differentfrom what and how they are today. The new entities will have cities set up by like-mindedcitizens from across the world. These nations and cities will have programmed smartcontracts for everything, have their cryptocurrencies that will not be governed by any politicalmasters – governments or central banks. These nations and cities will come up as thesolutions to ageold problems – poverty, corruption, and administrative inefficiency. The reason why Srinivasan brought this 2020 tweet once again in the public domain lastnight had a relation with what Wall Street Journal (WSJ) had said in an article yesterday.Headline: “If Russian Currency Reserves Aren’t Really Money, the World Is in for a Shock,”the WSJ article analyzed the situation where a central bank was barred from accessing itsreserves. The money involves a staggering $600 billion. This is an unprecedented scenario.A country that is the largest exporter of oil and whose oil much of Europe and America isbuying even today has been cut off from the international banking system. A country that haspossibly the world’s largest arsenal of nuclear weapons is being threatened with financialisolation. Is there any substance in these threats? Well, Srinivasan is a cool-headed guy. He has admirers who respect his ability to dissectdifficult data and come up with pearls of wisdom that can be compared with those in theGita.Balaji Srinivasan began his day yesterday with a tweet that said: Thank god for Satoshi.Without him, every country in the world would have to choose between having their assetsfrozen by DC or Beijing. But rather than USD or RMB, they can now choose BTC. The tweethad the WSJ articles attached to it.The financial sanctions clamped on Russia by the US and Europe threatens the veryexistence of the international financial system. Russia’s central bank keeps 32% of itsreserves in euros, 22% in gold, and 16% in dollars. Now, it has been barred from accessingdollar and euro reserves, leaving it with gold and its currency that can be used to buybitcoins (BTC). Average Russians have no choice but to adopt cryptocurrency en mass. There would be no surprises if Russia accepts bitcoin as a legal tender. The world’s largestcrypto exchange Binance has said it will not bar Russian citizens from buying or selling on itsplatform. Another important exchange US-based Kraken has said the same. Banninganyone on political grounds is against the spirit of bitcoin. The inventor of the coin goes bythe pseudonym, Satoshi Nakamoto. After the sanctions, Russia’s currency ruble depreciated 25% in a day, and trade in BTC-RUB peaked to the level last seen in May 2021. The entire crypto market has seen over$500 billion of value appreciation. As there is a possibility that Russia may bypass thefinancial sanctions by using crypto, the importance of the dollar vis a vis is being questioned.Saying that this would lead to the marginalization of the dollar, American billionaireinvestment banker Mike Novogratz had an interesting suggestion for China. He says, “I’ll tellyou one thing, you are going to sell your reserves before you invade Taiwan.” As of October2021, China had accumulated - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara $1.065 trillion in US treasury.

Pooja Hegde will soon be seen romancing Prabhas in the highly anticipated pan-India film Radhe Shyam. Directed by Radha Krishna Kumar, it will release on March 11. Since Radhe Shyam is based on astrology, do you believe in it?Yeah, I do believe in astrology. I feel there’s a proper science behind it. There’s a proper study behind alternate science. My father says that if a doctor gives an allopathy medicine and it doesn’t work for you, whereas if an astrologer tells you something and it doesn’t work, you blame the science. I have gotten a few great readings, sometimes life-changing too. Post the debacle of your Hindi debut Mohenjo Daro, you did Housefull 4 with a bigger star. Was it a conscious decision?Mohenjo Daro was a fantastic debut on paper. I got to be paired opposite Hrithik Roshan, coming together with Ashutosh Gowariker after Jodhaa Akbar and UTV was backing it. It didn’t get better than that. However, the film didn’t work, but the media was very kind to me. Not being from a filmi family and coming from a middle-class educational family, you don’t have opportunities coming knocking at your door. It is a different ball game when you are an outsider. I did big films down South, and it gave me the freedom to choose, and I consciously picked big Hindi films like Housefull 4. I did it for Akshay sir and Sajid Nadiadwala, which also got me Kabhi Eid Kabhi Diwali with Salman (Khan) sir. Do your failures affect you or get you frustrated? It is disheartening. Two years of my life went in Mohenjo Daro, but what am I supposed to do about it? The thing is to move on, and I have grown up with a tough mother who doesn’t endorse grief and tears for a long time. I was gutted since the films which were offered to me before I signed Mohenjo Daro, you’ll be surprised. It is kind of a lesson for me, but every film has its own destiny.

₹12 hike in petrol, diesel

price needed to break-even Agency News: New Delhi Petrol and diesel prices, which have been on a freeze for the past four months in view of assembly elections in states like Uttar Pradesh, need to be increased by over ₹12 per litre by March 16 for fuel retailers to break even. International crude oil prices shot above USD 120 a barrel for the first time in nine years on Thursday before retreating a little to USD 111 on Friday, but the gulf between cost and retail rates has only widened. With international oil prices - on which domestic fuel retails are directly benchmarked - spiking in the last two months, state-owned fuel retailers “need a massive price hike of ₹12.1

per litre on or before March 16, 2022, just to breakeven and a price hike of ₹15.1 is required” after including margins for oil firms, ICICI Securities said in a report. The basket of crude oil India buys rose to USD 117.39 per barrel on March 3, the highest since 2012, according to information from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) of the oil ministry. This compares to an average of USD 81.5 per barrel price of the Indian basket of crude.

Central banks in a bind, geopolitical situations aggravate dilemmas: Das The RBI kept the repo rate unchanged for the tenth time in a row at 4 per cent and retained the accommodative policy stance in the February policy review. Agency News: New Delhi Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das on Friday said central banks are in a bind as the recent geopolitical developments — the Russian invasion of Ukraine — have further aggravated the

challenges and dilemmas for them. “Central banks are in a bind — if they act aggressively to contain inflation which may perhaps subside as normalcy returns, they run the risk of setting in recession,” Das said. On the other hand, if they act too little and too late, they may

be blamed for “falling behind the curve” and may have to do a lot of catching up later which will be detrimental to growth, Das said while delivering his speech at the National Defence College.

He said the current global conditions, after about two years of living through the pandemic, are now posing complex challenges for central bank communication. The RBI kept the repo rate unchanged for the tenth time in a row at 4 per cent and retained the accommodative policy stance in the February policy review. With inflation now crossing the 6 per cent level and threatening to rise further, several analysts are now arguing that the RBI faces the risk.

The veteran producer says the success of past and current films with female protagonists show that women must be given their due as massive revenue earnersVeteran Producer Anand Pandit is a keen observer of cinematic trends and a lifelong learner of film history. On the occasion of International Women’s Day, he would like to reiterate that given the opportunity, female protagonists can make box-office history. He says, “It is really unfortunate that so many people believe that female stars cannot open films in a big way. Would they continue to stick to such outdated notions even after the success of ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’? Even in the past, so many films led by Vidya Balan, Alia Bhatt, Deepika Padukone, and many other remarkable actors have

earned not just big bucks but commercial acclaim as well. It is time, they are given their due as massive revenue earners.”He says, “How many people know that a star like Suraiya Ji drew a bigger salary than her male counterparts? Or that Suchitra Sen, Nargis, Madhubala, Meena Kumari, Wahida Rehman, Vaijayanti Mala, Sridevi, and Madhuri Dixit gave solo hits and were even given credit for the success of films where they starred with male stars?”In the end, he says, it is all about making space for women-led stories because it is at the level of ideation that women need to be considered as equals and offered a large canvas to work with. He concludes, “It is high time that we stop judging women without first offering them the same money and opportunities.
