‘They say boti-boti, we’re for beti-beti’: PM Modi targets Congress in UP

Varun rubbishes rumours of doing ‘Stree 2’ Prime Minister

Narendra Modi hit out at the Congress, the BSP and the SP in Uttar Pradesh, where the Lok Sabha election is expected to be a triangular fight.

Mumbai : Actor Varun Dhawan on Friday denied that he is part of the sequel to the hit horror comedy “Stree”. Directed by Amar Kaushik, “Stree” emerged as a box office winner last year, with producer Dinesh Vijan announcing that he would be coming out with a sequel as a part of his ambitious horror-comedy franchise. There were reports that Varun would be headlining the film, which originally featured Rajkummar Rao. When asked if he would be a part of “Stree 2”, the actor told reporters, “No, it’s false.” He was speaking at a special event of “Kalank” at Ishq 104.8 FM, here.

Amroha : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday launched a sharp attack on the Congress saying the party leadership has “special love” for those who talk about “boti-boti” (cutting into pieces). PM Modi was referring to Congress leader Imran Masood’s hate speech of 2014 for which he had been jailed ahead of the last Lok Sabha elections. “The Opposition threatens us with ‘boti-boti’ (cutting into pieces) and we talk of ensuring honour of ‘beti-beti’ (daughters),” he said at an election rally in Saharanpur in western Uttar Pradesh. “The one who talks about chopping into pieces is here (in Saharanpur Lok Sabha constituency). Shehzaada (a reference PM Modi has

used for Rahul Gandhi in the past) of the Congress has special love for him… Do remember, they focus on boti-boti (chopping) and we are for the honour and safety of daughters,” he said. Masood is the Congress candidate from Saharanpur Lok Sabha seat. In the run up to 2014 Lok Sabha polls, a video of Masood had gone viral in which he could be heard using objectionable language for the then Gujarat chief minister and BJP’s prime ministerial candidate. The Congress had distanced itself from Masood’s hate speech. “The Opposition’s only agenda is ‘Modi Hatao’ (remove Modi). Their only intention is to promote ‘vansvaad’

‘Election stunt’: Congress attacks BJP over Christian Michel chargesheet

New Delhi: The Congress on Friday termed the Enforcement Directorate’s chargesheet against Christian Michel mentioning the names of senior Congress leaders, as “rehashed insinuations, lies, and cheap election stunt”. The ED had on Thursday filed a supplementary chargesheet against the Michel, the alleged middleman in the Rs 3,600 crore AgustaWestland VVIP helicoper case. “A panicstricken Modi government and its puppet ED will not be able to change its exit date and fate. The Prime Minister has already been rejected by the people,” Randeep Surjewala, the Congress spokesperson said. Reacting to Surjewala, Union finance minister Arun

Jaitley, at a press conference, hit out at Congress president Rahul Gandhi and questioned Gandhi’s “silence” over the chargesheet filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against Christian Michel. “When no reply is given to such serious allegations then the country is entitled to presume that no reply can be given,” Jaitley told a press

conference in New Delhi adding, “Are RG, AP, FAM are imaginary persons?” The supplementary chargesheet filed on Thursday evening mentions that AP stands for Ahmed Patel, while FAM stood for family. “The right to silence is available to an accused not to a prime ministerial aspirant,” said Jaitley targeting Gandhi.

New Delhi : Pakistan will release 100 jailed Indian fishermen on Monday, diplomatic sources on both sides have confirmed. Pakistani officials have intimated India that the 100 fishermen will be released from prison on April 7 and taken to the Wagah border for repatriation to India the next day, the sources said. Pakistan’s move comes a few days after India made a special appeal in a Note Verbale sent to the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi asking for the

release of a total of 385 Indian fishermen and 10 civilian prisoners. “There are 385 Indian fishermen whose nationality has been conveyed to Pakistan and who have been languishing in Pakistan jails. It is requested that urgent and concrete steps be taken to repatriate them to India at the earliest, along with their boats,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in the note. The sources said Pakistan planned to repatriate a total of 360 prisoners, including five

Nitish Kumar had severed his ties with the Grand Alliance in July, 2017, less than two years after his partnership with arch rival Prasad and the Congress succeeded in delivering a crushing defeat to the BJP-led NDA in the assembly polls.

Prasad as a strategist during 2015 assembly polls, also shared the excerpt published in an English daily which quoted the RJD supremo as having said, “Kishor seemed to indicate that if I were to assure in writing my party’s support to the JD(U), the latter would pull out of the BJP alliance and rejoin Mahagathbandhan. “Though I was not bitter with Nitish, I had lost trust in him completely. Moreover, I was not sure how the people who had voted for the Grand Alliance in 2015 and the other parties that had united against the BJP all over the country, would react if I accepted Kishor’s offer,” the report quoted Prasad as having said in the book. But this also an honour for me.” Earlier at another election rally at Amroha, PM Modi hit out at the Congress and the BSP-SP grand-alliance in Uttar Pradesh saying “soft approach” adopted by these parties towards terror emboldened the perpetrators in the past.

The last batch would be released by April 29. Activists say this is one of the biggest such release of fishermen who inadvertently cross into Pakistan waters and are arrested. In September 2010, Pakistan released 442 Indian fishermen. MEA officials confirmed that arrangements were on for the first batch of fishermen, many of whom are from Diu. They however, declined to confirm if India

was considering a reciprocal move. The Pakistan High Commission has conveyed that more than 50 Pakistani fishermen and civilians who have completed their prison terms and formalities are awaiting repatriation by India. Mumbai-based peace activist Jatin Desai, who has been highlighting the issue, welcomed Pakistan’s decision. He called for both countries to release all fishermen held in both countries at present.

‘Poor attempt’: Prashant Kishor on Lalu Prasad’s big reveal on Nitish Kumar

Patna : RJD supremo Lalu Prasad has reportedly claimed that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had sent feelers through emissary Prashant Kishor for his return to “Mahagathbandhan” but the assertion was promptly dismissed as “bogus” by the poll strategist-turnedpolitician”. Reacting to an excerpt of the soon-to-bereleased autobiography of Prasad, Kishor - currently

the JD(U) national vicepresident - tweeted, “The claims made by Laluji as reported are bogus. This is nothing but a poor attempt (at) seeking relevance by a leader whose best days are behind him. Yes, we did meet many times before I joined JD(U), but if I were to tell what all was discussed then he would be quite embarrassed”. Kishor, who had worked with Kumar and

New Delhi : The Supreme Court has rejected a petition seeking a stay on the Rajasthan government’s decision to implement five per cent reservation to Gujjars and four other communities in educational institutions and government jobs. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi refused to interfere in the matter. On February 13, the Rajasthan assembly passed a bill granting five per cent quota to the Gujjar, RaikaRebari, Gadia Luhar, Banjara and Gadaria communities in jobs and education. The Rajasthan Backward Classes (Reservation of Seats in Educational Institutions in the State and of Appointments and Posts in Services under the State) (Amendment) Bill, 2019 was introduced by the Congress-led government in the state. The bill sought to increase the backward classes’ reservation from

the present 21 per cent to 26 per cent with a five per cent quota for Gujjars, Banjaras, Gadia Lohars, Raikas and Gadaria communities. The Rajasthan government passed the bill after the five communities protested for days on railway tracks to push for the reservation quota. The State Tourism Minister Vishvendra Singh and the representatives of the Gujjar community held talks to end the deadlock, however they remained inconclusive as the Gujjar leaders demanded written assurance from the government that necessary steps would be taken if their demands face legal hurdles. Around 64 trains were cancelled, 71 diverted and 32 partially cancelled due to the agitation, North Western Railways spokesperson said. The West Central spokesperson said 148 trains were cancelled and 143 diverted then.

Yogi calls the Indian Army is ‘Modi Sena’. Why we should all be furious..? Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath has never been famous for nuance or civility of expression. But the CM crossed even his own line when he called the Indian Army “Modi’s Sena”. The BJP may well explain it away as rhetorical flourish about the political will that made the Balakot strike possible, but the words are not benign. Nor can they be dismissed as hyperbole. Any attempt at political ownership of the military is not just alarming; it is treacherous. The soldier owes allegiance to the Indian State — and to his paltan and uniform; not to any government or political party. For a party that otherwise prides itself on muscular nationalism, the BJP, in this case, has violated the first principle of patriotism. While the Election Commission (EC) has issued notices, it would have set a stellar example had the reprimand and disassociation come sharply and swiftly from our three military chiefs. Parallels exist. Adityanath’s comments erupted into controversy in roughly the same week that the Australian Chief of Defence Forces Angus Campbell interrupted the comments of the country’s defence minister so that his officers could be moved away while the minister answered political questions. Surveys routinely show that the Indian Army is the country’s most trusted institution. It remains unscathed by the cynicism and lack of trust that has plagued almost every other pillar of democracy. But while the army has always been the first frontier of protection, it must now rise to keep its own essence secure. The most moving reprimand to Adityanath came this week from Siddharth Kumar, the 20-year-old son of Pradeep Kumar, a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officer who was among those who lost their lives in the Pulwama terror attack. I was sitting with him in his village at Shamli in western Uttar Pradesh when news of Adityanath’s words filtered in. Siddharth told me: “The uniform does not belong to any neta; it belongs to the country.” Nor was he comfortable with the prime minister’s emphasis on the Hindu voter. “My father’s uniform did not discriminate between Hindu and Muslim,” he said quietly. It has not even been three months since his Siddharth lost his father. Yet, he was able to display the kind of maturity and sensitivity that was in sharp contrast to the coarseness of the CM. In my mind, he, not Adityanath, is the true nationalist. The military also needs to reflect on how political polarisation is in danger of splitting its community down the middle. Of course, the soldier is also a citizen and entitled to her/his voting preference. But should we be comfortable with the recent phenomenon of soldiers joining electoral politics after retirement? Two of our former chiefs, General VK Singh and General JJ Singh, have taken the plunge. Down the line, many other soldiers or their families have embraced party politics. Kargil war hero Vikram Batra’s mother briefly flirted with politics and, realising that neither she nor her family were cut out for it, quit soon after. More recently, soldiers such as Major Surendra Poonia or short service commission officers such as Shalini Singh have also enrolled with political parties. As citizens, this is their right. But I wonder if it sets the ball rolling for the wider party-politicisation of the military. There are no easy answers. Many of the same questions apply to other professions too: journalists, judges, lawyers and technocrats. But there is no other profession whose independence and dignity matters as much as that of the military. The stakes here are much higher. It is also time to distinguish between electoral nationalists and genuine patriots. When a political party uses nationalism to court votes that qualifies them only to be electoral nationalists. Why, for instance, is no one — not even the self-proclaimed patriots of prime time TV — talking about the non functional financial upgrade (NFFU) for soldiers and the paramilitary? This financial package is given to other central government agencies to offset the loss from diminished - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara promotion opportunities. Editor

Irrfan Khan, Back After Battling Romeo Akbar Walter Saand Ki Aankh new pic: Taapsee Pannu and Cancer, Starts Filming Angrezi Medium Bhumi Pednekar watch as a new day dawns Movie Review

Irrfan Khan's Angrezi Medium kick-started in Udaipur on Friday

Udaipur : Actor Irrfan Khan, who had taken a break after his neuroendocrine tumour diagnosis last year, is back on sets. He started shooting for Angrezi Medium on Friday in Udaipur. The buzz about Irrfan shooting

for the film, which is a sequel to his 2017 movie Hindi Medium, had started earlier this week when he was spotted at the Mumbai airport. On Friday, producer Dinesh Vijan released a photograph that confirmed Irrfan’s return to work. The image has Vijan, director Homi Adajania, actor Deepak Dobriyal, cinematographer Anil Mehta and Irrfan posing together. In March 2018, Irrfan had

announced his diagnosis and said that he was going abroad for treatment. He returned to India in February this year. Hindi Medium, one of the highest-earning films of 2017, revolved around a well-off Chandni Chowk couple in Delhi (played by Irrfan and actress Saba Qamar) who aspired to break into the elite society and give their daughter the best education possible.

New Delhi : Romeo, A k b a r, Wa l t e r - t h r e e identities, one person and zero expressions. That’s the best way to sum up RAW, the twoand-a-half hour long yawn fest directed by Robbie Grewal. Set in 1971 when relations between India, Pakistan and East Pakistan were tense; back home, R&AW (RAW, Research and Analysis Wing) was busy polishing their best spy to go behind enemy lines. His job: get as much information as possible. Wait! But doesn’t that sound like Meghna Gulzar’s 2018 film Raazi? It does, to a certain extent. However, Romeo Akbar Walter is a paler cousin of Raazi. Romeo Ali (John Abraham), a teller in a bank by day and a theatre artist by night, catches the eye of RAW Chief Srikant Rai (Jackie Shroff) during one of his performances. The finesse with which Romeo disguises himself on stage every day wins over the RAW chief, who decides to recruit him for an important mission. After a crash course in spying, Romeo

is dispatched to Pakistan as Akbar with a new haircut and kohl-rimmed eyes. That’s how director Robbie Grewal turns a common man into a spy who is responsible for carrying out one of the biggest undercover missions across the border. 30 minutes into the slowest spy thriller ever, you decide to forgive the director thinking that things will get intense and edgy with Akbar’s arrival in Pakistan. But Grewal fails to deliver here too. Most twists and turns neither evoke excitement nor nervousness. From hidden transmitters to polygraph tests to third-degree torture to poor disguises, the film delves into every overabused trick in the magic box that is Bollywood espionage thrillers

Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar shared a new picture from the sets of Saand Ki Aankh

Udaipur : The shoot of the Taapsee Pannu, Bhumi Pednekar starrer Saand Ki Aankh has been on in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat region for a while now and the film’s lead cast has been sharing pictures from the sets. What looks like a coordinated move, the two actors shared a fresh picture of themselves in the midst of village life. Sharing the picture, Taapsee wrote: “Ujli subah teri khatir aayegi (For your sake, a bright day will dawn)”. The shot shows the two actors, with their back to the camera, looking at the rising sun. New Delhi : Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) beat Delhi Capitals (DC) by five wickets in their Indian Premier League (IPL) game, but more than the loss, it was the pitch that suited the away team more surprised all. Speaking after the game, DC head coach Ricky Ponting revealed how the curator had made the team believe that this was their best wicket. “I thought they bowled smartly on that wicket. That wicket surprised us a lot. Talking to the groundsmen before the game, he thought that was our best pitch. By far and away it was our worst. You saw how little it bounced and how slow it was. I thought their bowlers adapted well to the conditions. “They have very skilful bowlers in those conditions as they bowl knuckle balls and slower balls. But Ponting went on to add that while nobody would want to play SRH on a wicket like the one on Thursday, the home team will also need to adapt accordingly and the team composition will have to be done keeping in mind the low and slow Kotla wicket. “At the end of the day it is the same pitch for both teams. asked me, would I have wanted to play Sunrisers on that type of pitch? I mean, there couldn’t have been a different wicket where you would have wanted to play Sunrisers on,” Ponting smiled as he answered but his anger was palpable. He then explained that how the slowness of the nature took his team’s pacers like Ishant Sharma and Kagiso Rabada out of equation and in turn helped their seamers Sandeep Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.”It (Pitch) absolutely suited their game. They have great spinners and all their seamers just bowled slower balls. And on that wicket, when you bowl slower balls it is near impossible to hit,” he reasoned. The coach then said that if the nature of the Kotla track remains same

during the remaining four home games, he will have to seriously think about his team combination. ”But if the wicket is going to remain like this, then we have to think about our selection in our team as well. May be our bowlers were not suited to that wicket today but it was not what we expected so we are as surprised as anybody else.” However Ponting put up a brave face after team’s third defeat and expected the talented bunch of players to bounce back.”It is not the end of the world by any stretch of imagination. We have a good mix of experience with Shikhar and Morris. Even Rishabh (Pant) and Shreyas (Iyer) have played 4-6 editions of IPL, so they are not inexperienced,” he said.

Oil prices dip amid economic India squad for World Cup will depend on concerns, but on track for weekly gain England weather, Virat Kohli opinion : Rohit

Tokyo : Oil prices fell on Friday, with Brent slipping away from the $70 mark reached the previous day, pulled down by worries about progress in the U.S.China trade talks. International benchmark Brent futures dropped 15 cents, or 0.2 percent, to $69.25 a barrel by 0455 GMT, having touched $70.03 in the previous session, the highest since Nov. 12. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude was down 1 cent at $62.09. The contract fell 36 cents in the previous session, having hit $62.99 on Wednesday, its highest since

Nov 7. Weighing on prices are concerns that an economic slowdown could dent fuel consumption, traders said. The United States and China, the world’s two biggest oil consumers, could be close to a deal to end their trade dispute though some hurdles remain. U.S. President Donald Trump

on Thursday said the two sides were “very close to making a deal,” though the United States remains hesitant to lift $250 billion in tariffs that China is seeking to have removed. Prices for thermal coal and natural gas, the main power generation fuels, have already fallen sharply amid a marked

slowdown in consumption. Still, Brent is heading for a second week of gains, while WTI is on track for a fifth consecutive weekly rise. Brent has gained nearly 30 percent this year, while WTI has risen nearly 40 percent, underpinned by production cuts and U.S. sanctions against Iran and Venezuela. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and producer allies such as Russia, together known as OPEC+, agreed to cut output by 1.2 million barrels per day (bpd) this year to prop up prices.

New Delhi : The Indian selectors, who are days away from announcing the squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup, are closely monitoring the Indian Premier League. A couple of spots are still undecided and some sterling performances in the IPL could decide which two players are included in the final list of 15. Several factors will determine what kind of squad the selectors pick. Rohit Sharma, star India opener, said the side looked pretty settled but reckoned the final decision would be based on weather conditions in England for the World Cup. “I think we are pretty much settled. There are a few spots (undecided) which everyone knows about but again that depends on what the captain and the coach and the selectors think whether

they want to go for the extra seamer or the extra spinner or extra middle order player or a reserve opener. “It also depends upon the conditions. The last time we were in England, the conditions were quite dry. I don’t know how things will be. So if it is like that than you take an extra spinner, as simple as that. If it’s not then probably take the extra seamer,”

he said in Mumbai. With Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Bhuveneshwar Kumar and Hardik Pandya in the seam seam department and Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal certain to start as spin twins, it’s for the selectors to decide if they need a spin or seam backup in the England bound squad. Rohit Sharma said the Indian bench strength would largely depend on the captain’s opinion. “I captain my franchise so I know why the captain’s opinion matters in the extra player you want to pick. So I think Virat and Ravi Shastri have to decide the combination and where do they want that extra cushion. So their inputs (will matter) along with the selectors who will be keeping an eye on how those players are doing,” he said.

Ahmedabad teen hacks into Facebook accounts, pockets lakhs

Rajkot : A 19-year-old boy from Ahmedabad was arrested for allegedly hacking into the Facebook accounts of people and cheating them into sending cash to him on some or the other pretext. Genius Patel, who works as a delivery boy for Swiggy, was picked up from his house in Meghaninagar area of Ahmedabad. BJP hopes to repeat 2014, Congress eyes comeback

Ahmedabad : As the last date of filing nominations for the Lok Sabha elections ended in Gujarat on Thursday, the stage is set for a direct fight between the arch rivals— the BJP and the Congress. With party president Amit Shah contesting from Gandhinagar seat, the mood in the BJP is upbeat to repeat the 2014 performance when it had won all the 26 seats. The Congress, on the other hand, will attempt to open an account and is hopeful of putting up a good show, especially after restricting the BJP to a tally of 99 in the state assembly elections of 2017. Gujarat Assembly has 182 seats. Both the parties have nominated candidates based on caste equations for an interesting direct fight. A couple of candidates put up by tribal leader Chhotu Vasava’s Bharatiya Tribal Party and the NCP are unlikely to make

a major difference in the results. The BJP has repeated 16 of its sitting members of Parliament. On 10 seats there are new candidates. Among those who were not repeated include sitting law makers L.K. Advani and Paresh Rawal from Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad (East) respectively. The BJP on its list has five women candidates while the Congress has one. Sherkhan Pathan, the only Muslim candidate in the state, is from the Congress. Gujarat Congress spokesperson

Manish Doshi said that the party was hopeful of winning 12 to 14 seats. According to him, apart from the failure of the government at the Centre, they would also highlight issues related to Gujarat. Unemployment and farm loan waivers will be the key issues. Gujarat BJP spokesperson Bharat Pandya expressed confidence that the party would win all the 26 seats. He said whether one believes it or not, there is a huge undercurrent in favour of Narendra Modi.

of the city police. “Genius used to request money transfer in his Paytm account. Using his registered Paytm number, we tracked him to Ahmedabad and arrested him on Wednesday night,” said JS Geddam, assistant commissioner of police, cyber crime. According to Gedam, Genius has pocketed at least Rs one lakh by hacking into the accounts of nearly 40-50 people. “We are trying to trace other victims of this fraud,” he said. In January this year, Genius had similarly hacked the Facebook account of a woman running an nongovernment organization in Pardi village of Valsad district.

Over 400 tile makers in one area in Gujarat have shut down after a ban on coal gasifiers Ahmedabad : Soon after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) banned ceramic units running on coal gasifiers in Morbi, Gujarat, the tiles industry has witnessed a major hit. Largely impacted by the ban, the tile manufacturing units have shut down, switching to natural gas as an alternate. The switch, however, may increase fuel expenses for the manufacturers considering the PNG prices. Hope floats that this would close the price gap between unorganised players in Morbi and branded tile makers like Kajaria

Ceramics, Somany Ceramics, Cera Sanitaryware, and Asian Granito and help these companies gain market share. According to media reports, of the 800 ceramic units in total, over 400 wall tile plants running majorly on coal gasifiers have been closed so far owing to shortage of raw material that has been impacting the operation costs for these units. The

Morbi ceramic industry had expected a huge growth. In fact, the industry is reportedly planning to establish 50 new wall tiles manufacturing plants. After the ban on March 6, the production has reportedly dropped by 60%70%. “Among these units, those most affected will be the wall tile and soluble salt tile manufacturers as they were meeting nearly their entire thermal energy requirements through coal gasifiers,” Suprio Banerjee, vice president and head, MidCorporate ratings of ICRA reportedly said.

A ‘Manifesto of Minority communities’ released by the MCC has called upon the contesting political parties to amend the National Minorities Commission Act, 1992, to give it a Constitutional status and make it mandatory for all states to have minorities commissions. There is no minority commission in Gujarat and 17 other states of the country, regretted the MCC. Quoting the Sachar Committee report that said that Muslims in the country

The other demands made by the MCC include setting up of minority affairs ministries in all states, special budgetary provisions for minorities and enactment of a law to prevent communal violence.
