A local court today remanded top Maoist leader Roopesh, his wife and three others, to judicial custody till June 3. Mahila court judge M P Subramanian ordered them to custody after they were produced in court following questioning for some 20 hours by police officials from Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, police said. Cases have been registered against them under various sections of IPC including 120 B (conspiracy) and 124 A (sedition), they said. They will be lodged in the Coimbatore central jail and police will seek their custody for questioning again, police added.

Supreme Court has taken a restrictive view of Article 25 The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has once again indicted India in its 2015 report. The USCIRF is an independent, bipartisan US federal government commission established in 1998 under the International Religious Freedom Act and “monitors” freedom of religion in the entire world — except the US. The EU has also put India on a list of “countries of particular concern” on religious freedom. India may have refused to take cognisance of the recently released report but it presents an opportunity to look at the state of religious freedoms in our country. But before we do that, a mirror should also be held up to the US. There is a chaplain for the Senate and the armed services. Prayer breakfasts are routine in the White House. Interestingly, in the US Supreme Court, public sessions are opened by a functionary announcing: “God save this honorable court”. Freedom of religion is globally recognised as a fundamental human right. In the last few months, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has maintained that every individual has the “undeniable right to retain or adopt” any faith. But still, there is some truth to the USCIRF report. Since June 2014, religious minorities have been subjected to a series of derogatory comments by members of the ruling party and the prime minister has not taken any visible action against them. Is it not a fact that the BJP’s 2014 manifesto had promised the banning of conversion? Modi needs to tell his party and the RSS that a Central conversion law would impinge on the freedom of religion and make a mockery of his promise of “complete freedom of faith”. But our Supreme Court has also taken a very restrictive view of the freedom of religion. It has held that, under this right, only essential practices of religion are protected. And what is “essential” or peripheral would be decided by the court — not by sacred texts. But if the judiciary is not competent to decide on policy matters, it certainly should not have the power to pronounce on the essential practices of a religion. Article 25 was meant to guarantee the freedom to practise individual beliefs. The Supreme Court acknowledged this when it observed that “subject to the restrictions which this article imposes, every person has a fundamental right under our Constitution to entertain such religious beliefs as may be approved by his judgement or conscience”.

Air Seycehlles, which is the national carrier of the Seychelles, is partly owned by Gulf carrier Etihad Airways, which holds 40 per cent stake in the airline. Etihad also holds 24 per cent equity in Jet Airways. The Mumbai-based airline has made
Abu Dhabi as its overseas hub, after Etihad’s strategic investment in the carrier. The agreement heralds an era of closer cooperation between the two airlines which, in subsequent months, will include reciprocal frequent flyer programmes, cargo handling, and expansion of code-share arrangements, Jet Airways said in a release. Agency : Mumbai Google has acquired the makers of the Timeful app for an undisclosed amount, the Mountain View giant revealed on Monday. The app, which till date was released only for iOS, will remain available for users to download and use, but active development for the platform will cease with the acquisition. Timeful is a calendar app that analyses a user’s schedule to suggest free time slots for tasks the user wants to complete. This could be anything from wishful thinking (going to the gym) to a reminder to call a bank before the week is up. The app supposedly learns the user’s schedule, habits, and requirements to better prioritise and assign
tasks to free time. While both work and personal tasks are given equal priority, users can assign different priorities to individual tasks. Google says the Timeful team will be joining the family, and that the firm’s technology will be used to augment Inbox, Calendar, and other services. In Gujarat FM Radio Stations will be set up in four towns namely Amreli, Bhuj, Surendranagar and Dahod, said the minister. Minister Rathore also stated that of these four proposals, proposals for setting up 100 Watt FM transmitter in Amreli, Surendranagar and Dahod were approved in 12th Five Year Plan, while work for installation of 5KW FM transmitter at Bhuj is under progress.
