Maratha quota issue for the last one year but to no avail. The top court has scrapped a decision taken by all parties in the state legislature, he said. The legal battle for Maratha quota will continue till there is “victory”, Mr Thackeray said.Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court termed the state law on Maratha quota as “unconstitutional” and held there were no exceptional circumstances to breach the 50 per cent reservation cap set by the 1992 Mandal verdict. The judgement came on a batch of pleas challenging the Bombay High Court verdict which had upheld the grant of reservation to Marathas in admissions and government jobs in the state. The Maharashtra State Reservation (of seats for admission in educational institutions in the State and for appointments in the public services and posts under the State) for Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) Act 2018 was enacted to grant reservation

I am sure you will script a new governance pattern.”BJP’s embarrassing defeat Despite the mega rallies of PM Modi, Union home minister Amit Shah and BJP national president JP Nadda, the saffron party had to face a humiliating defeat in the Bengal Assembly election. While the Trinamool secured 213 seats of the 292 seats where elections were held, the BJP was decimated to just 77 seats.

Even as India continues to battle a deadly second wave of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases, the Centre warned on Wednesday that a “third phase is inevitable.” A phase three is inevitable, given the higher levels of circulating virus but it is not clear on what time scale this phase three will occur. We should prepare for new

waves,” principal advisor to the government K Vijay Raghavan said at a press briefing hosted by the Union ministry of health and family welfare (MoHFW), according India is currently in the grip of a second Covid-19 wave which is so intense that the country is seeing more daily infections than it did during the first wave that struck the country last year. The number of deaths per day in the second wave, too, is higher than the corresponding figures during the first wave. Since April 22, India has recorded more than 300,000 cases every day, the highest by any country since the beginning of the pandemic, while the number of daily fatalities has been more than 3,000 for a number of days. India is also the only country to have logged more than 400,000 cases in a single day.

who had attended a dharna near a Gandhi statue in the central part of Kolkata on Tuesday, said his party will ensure that the entire country gets to know about the widespread violence unleashed in the state following the declaration of

Assembly poll results. “I will be visiting districts such as North 24 Parganas to be on the side of our members who were at the receiving end of this brutality… We want to tell the entire country about this,” Nadda said at a programme

organised by the saffron camp at its Hastings office here. The BJP has claimed

that at least six of its workers and supporters, including a woman, were killed in attacks allegedly perpetrated by the TMC following its victory in the assembly elections. We will continue to serve the help the people of Bengal and help them realise their dreams. 2 EDITORIAL ‘Putting officers in jail will not bring Doctors battle Covid at Punjab’s biggest Editorial SUNVILLA SAMACHAR oxygen to Delhi’, says Supreme Court civil hospital: ‘No duty, off-duty hours’ India Must Widen Food Support Programme The second wave of Covid-19 has been pushing millions more in India into destitution and extreme poverty. Many families are losing their earning members to the pandemic, many survived alone and have nothing left with them even to feed themselves, and many lost their jobs. We, therefore, immediately need to at least widen our food support programmes. Though, Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojna (PMGKY) has been extended a fortnight ago for two months ie for May and June 2021, it would cover only 80 crore poor people. The programme was launched last year after the lockdown of the country to cover the same number of people. In the last one year millions of workers have lost their jobs and are yet to rejoin. The second wave has worsened the situation since February 2021 with additional job loss in millions. Therefore, there is an urgent need to reassess the number of people transitioned into destitution and extreme poverty in real time so that all of them could at least be provided with food. It may be mentioned here that pre-pandemic data of extreme poverty in India showed 27 crore people in extreme poverty, which increased to about 80 crore just after the lockdown. That is why PMGKY was launched for that many number of people. One wonders why this programme was extended this year for the same number of people amidst much more devastation caused by the second wave, both in terms of loss of lives and livelihoods. Therefore, there may be more job loss. ‘Relying on PMO is useless’: Subramanian Swamy urges Modi to ‘delegate’ war against COVID-19 to Nitin Gadkari Agency News: New Delhi BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy on Wednesday hit out at the Centre over its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to hand over the “conduct of this war” to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. Echoing recent reports, the lawmaker contended that a third wave that targeted children might soon create fresh panic in the country.“India will survive Coronavirus Pandemic as it did Islamic invaders and British Imperialists. We could face one more wave that targets children unless strict precautions now are taken. Modi should therefore delegate the conduct of this war to Gadkari,” he tweetedResponding to

follow-up remarks, Swamy noted that this was not a critique of Narendra Modi and that the “PMO is a department not the Prime Minister himself”. Delegating, he added, was not a sign of being incapable. But why Nitin Gadkari? “Because dealing with COVID-19 needs an infrastructure framework in which aspect Gadkari has proved his ability,” Swamy explained. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, he added was “another very capable Minister”. However the fact that he already had a massive portfolio to contend with made him ineligible And while some continue to call for Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan’s removal, the Rajya Sabha MP has a different take on things.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday began hearing a plea of the Centre against Delhi High Court’s order issuing contempt notice and seeking personal appearance of its officials for noncompliance of the direction on supply of oxygen to treat

COVID-19 patients in the national capital. The hearing began in the afternoon after Chief Justice NV Ramana asked the court registry to place the papers on the matter before a bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud. The Centre informed the court that both the state and Union governments were “doing

After making frantic rounds of Covid wards at Punjab’s biggest civil hospital for seven hours, Dr Bhupinder Singh has finally taken off his PPE suit. But there is no time to rest as calls from patients in home isolation and even junior doctors pour in for consultation. At the fore-front of treating Level-2 and Level-3 patients at the Jalandhar Civil Hospital since last year, Dr Singh says his entire team

has been working 24×7 to help people at the time of this mammoth crisis. “There are no ‘duty, off-duty’ hours. We have to save lives,” he says, in between calls. Jalandhar Civil Hospital has 200 beds are dedicated for the L-2 patients and 56 beds are for the L-3 patients. The team of doctors here says that the second wave is different as it is bringing in more critical patients“For the last over one year, my job has been to attend the Covid patients. The only difference I

could notice between the first and the second wave is that now the disease seems more infectious and the number of critical cases are more,” said Dr Singh.Adding that he is on call round-the-clock, he says: “We are not worried about our personal lives but are only focusing on our patients so that we can save their lives. We want to educate others to help the medical fraternity by following the norms and remaining at home if there is no work outside.”

Celebrations broke out in various parts of the state on Sunday evening as it became clear that the TMC was going to form the state government with an absolute majority. According to reports, it will be a brief event with a

After this election, Narendra Modi will be worried by Mamata Banerjee’s name. The campaign had turned

into a contest between the two in the eyes of the media and public. So victory and defeat is also being associated with these two personalities,” he adds.“Taking the fight to Delhi is the natural progression, and Mamata Banerjee is gaining a pan-India acceptance among the Opposition,” Debangshu opines.
