Agency News: New Delhi The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) has confirmed that it will launch the earth observation satellite EOS-3 aboard its GSLV Mk III vehicle on August 12 at 5.43am from the country’s only spaceport at Sriharikota. With the mission, the agency will resume the country’s space activities after a gap of over four months due to the second wave of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.“The launch is tentatively scheduled at 0543 hours IST on August 12, 2021, subject to weather conditions,” the space agency said in a release.This will be the second operational flight of GSLV Mk III after the Chandrayaan-2 mission when the launch vehicle “over-performed” placing the spacecraft in a higher orbit and saving fuel for upcoming manoeuvres. Agency News: Mumbai Bharat Biotech said on Thursday that its Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin has received the ‘Good Manufacturing Practices’ (GMP) compliance certificate from Hungary. “Another milestone in our account as COVAXIN® receives GMP certificate from Hungary. This marks the 1st EUDRAGDMP compliance certificate received by Bharat Biotech from European regulatories,” the company said in a tweet. The approval was given to the vaccine by the National Institute of Pharmacy and Nutrition Hungary. Govt Persists With Pegasus Intransigence In Supreme Court
The take-off for the hearing on a batch of petitions in the Supreme Court is certainly a setback for the Modi government. Chief Justice N V Ramana, while asking pointed questions to the petitioners, however, made it clear that the allegations about the use of Pegasus spyware to snoop on opposition leaders, journalists and others were serious ‘if newspaper reports were correct’. There has been a stream of damning media reports in recent days, which suggested that even former Supreme Court Arun Mishra was being targetted. The court did not make any specific reference to Justice Mishra, but could have weighed in the possibility when the Chief Justice talked about media reports. When Kapil Sibal, counsel for journalists N Ram and Sashi Kumar, pointed out that that there are reports of an old number of a former Supreme Court judge and phones of registrars being on the list of potential targets of snooping, the Chief Justice said, "Truth has to come out. We don't know whose names are there." The Modi government’s prevarication on the issue was quite evident, when there was no representation from the government when such an important issue, which has rocked parliament for most of the monsoon session, was taken up by the Supreme Court. And the absence dominated much of the first day’s proceedings. The court asked the petitioners to serve copies of their petitions to the government and adjourned the hearing to next Tuesday, so that the government can ensure its presence. The government’s approach in not sending a counsel on the opening day of hearing shows its continued intransigence on the issue. But when the court takes up the issue again next week, it will have to answer questions, which it has been refusing to do so far both inside and outside parliament. It is most pertinent that Prime Minster Modi has so far refused to acknowledge the problem, although he has lost no opportunity to blame the opposition for disrupting parliament, thereby ‘insulting’ democracy. But he does not want to consider what exactly is causing theproblem and agitating the opposition and the media. But the government will not be able to dodge the issue much longer. When the court resumes the hearing next week, it will have to provide an answer, as the petitioners have sought to know how the government got into the contract. The government has so far been refusing to come clean on the issue. It is not even saying yes or no to the question whether the government has ever bought the spyware from the Israeli company. The inability to rule out the purchase is in a way confirmation that the government did buy the offending software. In fact, the government has been playing with words for the ambiguity to remain in the belief that the benefit of doubt will go in its favour. But all available indications suggest an active role for the government in the snoopgate, which, when admitted, will have serious ramifications for the Modi government. It is to be noted that the government is also not in a position to disclaim knowledge of thevclandestine operation. In fact, IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw’s predecessor Ravi ShankarvPrasad had even justified the use of the spy tool, saying a lot of countries were using it, questioning the propriety of accusing only the Indian government. With the Supreme Court in the picture, it is unlikely that the Modi government will be able to counter the demand for disclosures with negativism, which is what it exhibited even in the apex court as it took up the clutch of petitions against the dangerous use of Pegasus by preferring not to send its legal officers. The court’s question on the timing of the petitions, given that the Pegasus issue had first cropped up two years ago, may have given it temporary comfort, but overall the scales seem to be heavily tilted - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara against the government.

As many as 533 patients succumbed to the infection during this period. The country has an active caseload of 4,10,353, which is 1.29 per cent. The weekly positivity rate is 2.37 per cent, while the daily positivity rate is 2.58 per cent. Vaccination figures cross 48.93 crore Over 19.5 crore doses have been administered in 45 days since
the launch of the nation-wide mega vaccination drive. The overall vaccination figure has crossed 48.93 crore. The health ministry said that so far 51.01 crore doses have been provided to states and Union Territories till now. Of these, 48.60 lakh doses have been consumed. This figure also includes the wastage, as per the data shared by the ministry. According to ICMR, over 47.48 crore samples have been tested for Covid-19 till now, of which 16,64,030 samples were tested on Wednesday.

A division bench of the Kerala high court has expanded the definition of rape and said non-penetrative sexual act between the thighs of a victim to produce a sensation akin to penetration will also de defined as rape, news agency PTI reported. “...when the body of the victim is manipulated to hold the legs together for the purpose of simulating a sensation akin to penetration of an orifice; the offence of rape is attracted. When penetration is thus made in between the thighs so held together, it would certainly amount to “rape” as defined under Section 375,” a bench of Justices K Vinod Chandran and Ziyad Rahman has recently ruled in a landmark verdict. The bench was
hearing an appeal of a man against a trial court verdict involving a case where he repeatedly assaulted a minor girl in his neighbourhood sexually. He was sentenced to life by the trial court against which the man moved the high court. The sexual act which was alleged in this case was that of penetration between the thighs of the victim. In short, considering the intention of the legislature as revealed from the above proposals, followed by the enactment of Criminal Law Amendment Act, 2013 and gradual evolution of the concept of the offence of “rape” from time to time, the irresistible conclusion is that, the definition of rape as contained in section 375 would take in, all forms of penetrative sexual assault onto vagina.

recovered: MoS Finance Agency News: Mumbai Goods and Services Tax (GST) authorities recovered Rs 1,900 crore of tax evasion during the April-June quarter of the ongoing 2021-22 financial year, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said via a written reply in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. Tax evasion amounting to Rs 12,235 crore was recovered in 2020-21 and Rs 18,464 crore in 2019-20. According to the data shared by the Finance Ministry, 1,580 cases of tax evasion were detected till June amounting to Rs 7,421.27 crore worth of evasion

One arrested for firing in the air Junagadh’s Vanthali police on Wednesday arrested a 40-year-old man from Rajkot for firing two rounds in the air from his licensed revolver at the bank of Ozat river near Vathali of Junagadh on Tuesday evening. According to the witness of the incident Nanabhai Karmata (60), a resident of Dhanfuliya village in Junagadh, who was also made a complainant, two men arrived in a car at the river bank and one of them shouted at the labourers who were mining sand while the other fired two rounds from his weapon. Later, both of them left the spot. No one was hurt in the incident but one of the labourers shot the video of the firing and circulated it on social media.

Kishan Goswami, a resident of Meera Park in Vavdi road in Morbi, hanged himself at his home on July 17. Police said he was reportedly fed up with harassment by his in-laws. During the live session, Goswami blamed his wife for forcing him to take the extreme step. Goswami’s mother Kiran lodged a complaint against her son’s wife Mitali, father-inlaw Pankaj Goswami and mother-in-law Lata under section 306 (abetment of suicide) of Indian Penal Code.
