Reaffirming that forced religious conversion is a “serious issue”, the Supreme Court said on Monday it is against the Constitution. The court was hearing a plea filed by advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay seeking direction to the Centre and states to take stringent steps to control fraudulent religious conversion by “intimidation, threatening, deceivingly luring through gifts and monetary benefits”. The Centre told the court it is collecting information from states on religious conversion through such means. Appearing before a bench of Justices M R Shah and C T Ravikumar, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta sought time to furnish detailed information on the issue. “We are gathering

information from the states. Give us a week’s time,” Mehta said. He said statutory the regime will determine whether a person is converting due to some change in belief. The top court acknowledged forced religious conversion is a very serious matter. The apex court will now take up the matter on December 12. Forced religious conversion may pose a danger to national security and impinge on religious freedom of citizens, the top court had said recently, and asked the Centre to step in and make sincere efforts to tackle the “very serious” issue.

‘Not Detained, Not in US’, Says Gang- Forced religious conversion ster Goldy Brar; ‘Why Did Punjab CM against Constitution: SC Agency News: New Delhi Mann Lie’, Asks Opposition Agency News: New Delhi In an embarrassment for the chief minister Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government, a purported gangster Goldy Brar has surfaced, in which he has denied his detention by the United States (US) authorities. has not independently verified the authenticity of the video. The reported video comes days after Mann, on December 2, “confirmed” Brar’s detention in the killing of singer Sidhu Moose Wala. Brar claimed in the purported that he had not been detained by the US police. “The claims made by the Chief Minister are wrong. I am not even in the US, so the question of detention doesn’t arise,”. While campaigning for the Gujarat elections, Mann had told the media about the detention and termed it “a big success against gangsters”. The issue has now snowballed into a controversy with the opposition accusing Mann of misleading people for “electoral gains”. Congress

President Raja Warring, while seeking clarification from the Chief Minister, said the truth needs to come out. “If he is saying he has not been arrested and if that is true, it means the Chief Minister has been lying for some petty gains in the Gujarat elections,” he alleged. He questioned the timing of Mann’s statement. “Even before central agencies or for that matter, the state agencies could confirm, Mann jumped to a conclusion and that too made a statement in poll-bound Gujarat. It seems he was trying to extract political benefits out of the case,’’ alleged the PCC Chief. The day Mann made the statement, his media team, including senior IAS officers in Punjab, had also told reporters to stay tuned for an important press conference by the CM on how Brar was detained.

group has released names of 56 Kashmiri Pandits working in the Valley post Lapid’s comments on the film. Soon after his tweet, film producer Ashoke Pandit wrote that more than the mockery of Hindu genocide, the “silence” of IFFI, Goa, is “frustrating”. “The silence of @IFFIGoa on this mockery of our genocide is much more frustrating. An Indian jury member #SudiptoSen said #KashmirFiles didn’t fit in their criteria. So a film depicting a genocide on Hindus by Islamic fundamentalists doesn’t fall in criteria. Covid won’t challenge Xi Jinping yet

Agency News: New Delhi

Student protests against China’s strict zero-Covid policy seem to have largely subsided, even as President Xi Jinping told visiting European Union President Charles Michel in Beijing that the momentary unrest had been carried out by “frustrated teenagers.” But during the week, protest videos from cities like Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu and Urumqi made it past heavy Chinese censorship to tell the rest of the world about anger, dissension and frustration in the world’s second largest economy. So, what do these protests tell us about China? Are they just a flash in the pan? A symptom of dissatisfaction against the expanding control of the Chinese Communist Party in the “new era” under Xi Jinping? How is Comrade Xi positioning his own legacy in the pantheon of the Chinese greats – Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping? And how does India look at a rising China, especially in light of the border crisis in Ladakh? As the warm waters of the Arabian Sea washed the shores of Goa a few days ago, a bevy of influential China-watchers, both Indian and international, debated the subject under the aegis of the prestigious Institute of Chinese Studies, with a little help from the conservative German think-tank, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and Goa University. Certainly, the ICS forum agreed that Xi Jinping had consolidated his power, even if it was at the cost of ideology, and elevated himself to become part of the Mao-Deng-Xi trinity. If Mao made the people rise up and Deng made them rich, then Xi’s core message is to make China great again. In fact, the US-China contest is framed precisely in this narrative, about the years of humiliation experienced by the Chinese people at the hands of the West at least since the opium wars more than 150 years ago. Alka Acharya, ICS director and JNU professor, noted that the Chinese protests “come at a time when Xi Jinping has emerged as one of China’s most powerful leaders since Mao… and a major challenge to his leadership.” But, she pointed out, it was important to note that the protests “don’t really constitute ‘dissent’ in the sense of political opposition to the Communist Party,” which is why the Chinese leadership would likely adopt “a - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara calibrated carrot and stick” policy.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday stated that the controversy over the use of lotus in the G20 logo is ”not a non-issue” but she would refrain from raising it as the matter, if discussed outside, may not augur well for the country. The CM also contended that the central government could have chosen any national symbol other than the lotus for the summit’s logo, as the flower also represents a political party. The Congress has alleged that the Centre used lotus in the G20 logo in a bid to promote the Bharatiya Janata Party. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh responded to the allegation, saying that the flower was part of the country’s cultural identity.Banerjee, before leaving for New Delhi, told at the city

If Needed, Law Against ‘Love Jihad’ to Be Made Stronger to Protect Interests of Tribal Women: MP CM Agency News: Indore Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has said if required, the existing state law against “love jihad” would be made stronger in order to curb incidents of men marrying tribal women with the motive of grabbing their land. Chouhan stated this on Sunday referring to the Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 2021, which prohibits conversion from one religion to another by use of misrepresentation, force, undue influence, coercion, any other fraudulent means, allurement, or promise of marriage. He was addressing a gathering of tribal people here on the death anniversary of tribal freedom fighter Tantya Bhil. “If needed, the law regarding ‘love jihad’ will be made stronger so that none of the culprits go unpunished. It has been seen that some people marry tribal girls and their aim is to grab their property. The religious freedom act will be made stronger to check incidents of men marrying tribal women for grabbing the latter’s family

land. It will stop love jihad aimed at grabbing their land,” he said. ‘Love jihad’ is a term used by right-wing Hindu groups that claim there is a “conspiracy” to lure Hindu girls into marriage and convert them to Islam. “I’m the master trainer of Panchayats Extension to Scheduled Areas (PESA) Act. I am disseminating information about it in detail. This act will stop all such activities that are against the interests of the tribal community as many rights and powers have been given to the respective gram sabhas,” he said. “The government has realised that just because the panchayats don’t have the access and control over revenue records, many influential people buy land in their areas in the names of their servants without their knowledge. To check this, their land documents will have to be kept in the gram sabha,” the chief minister said.

Maharashtra Man Marries Twin Sisters, Women’s Panel Orders Probe & Action Agency News: Solapur The Maharashtra State Commission for Women has directed the Solapur Police to probe and take action into reports of a Mumbai man getting married to twin sisters in his hometown, sparking a huge furore, here on Monday. The MSCW Chairperson Rupali Chakankar has asked the Solapur Police Superintendent to inquire, initiate action under the marriage which is illegal under IPC Section 494, and report to the MSCW on priority. The missive from the women’s panel after a bizarre ‘setting’ in which a Mumbai man — Atul U. Avtade — got married to two identical twin sisters, Rinky M. Padgaonkar and Pinky M. Padgaonkar, both aged 36, and are engineers working with a private IT company in Mumbai, and living in Kandivali west. The marriage took place on December 2 before 300 guests lustily cheering ‘the newly married triple’ and videos of the event in Akluj went viral on social media. Latest unconfirmed reports

The CM also contended that the central government could have chosen any national symbol other than the lotus for the summit’s logo, as the flower also represents a political party airport, ”I have also seen it. As it’s a matter related to our country, we are not saying anything. It does not augur well for the country if the issue gets discussed outside.” At the national capital, the CM will be attending the meeting called by PM Narendra Modi to discuss the preparatory process for the G20 summit in 2023. ”

‘Not Going to NCP’: Shashi Tharoor Rejects PC Chacko’s ‘Warm’ Invite To His Party Agency News: New Delhi Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has put a lid on Kerala Nationalist Congress Party president PC Chacko’s “warm” invite to join the party, by saying he is “not going to NCP”. Chacko had said that if Tharoor comes to NCP, he will be accepted warmly and will continue to remain as “Thiruvananthapuram MP even if the Congress party rejects him.” “Tharoor is one politician in India who every party wishes to have in their fold” Chacko told in Kannur, adding that “unfortunately the only party who has not understands his capability is Congress.” He also highlighted that Tharoor was the only leader from the grand old party to defeat the BJP. Responding to these comments, Tharoor said “I need to be welcomed if I am going there. I am not going to the NCP. Such matters were not discussed with PC Chacko.” Chacko also lauded Tharoor’s “political maturity” in expressing his opinion on the issue of Vizhinjam port construction and

asked if other Congress leaders had the ability to say such view points. This comes amid the signs of a tussle inside Kerala Congress in the wake of Tharoor’s Malabar tour which seems to have rattled a significant section in Congress in the state with a few of them sensing an “agenda” behind his move. Tharoor’s opponents in the party feel that through his programmes, he was trying to position himself as an ideal chief ministerial candidate of the Congress-led UDF for the 2026 Assembly polls to end the rule of the CPI(M)-led LDF, which has been in power since 2016.

Sloppy India allow Bangladesh to escape Agency News : New Delhi If India were mediocre with the bat after being put in, Bangladesh were being pathetic. Chasing a modest target of 187, Bangladesh collapsed to 136 for 9 in spite of cruising at 128 for 4 in the 35th over. But India just couldn’t get that final wicket. Mehidy Hasan Miraz (38 not out) and No.11 Mustafizur Rahman (10 not out) forged a sensational unbroken 51run stand that helped Bangladesh escape with a one-wicket win in the first ODI at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Sunday. For sure Miraz and Mustafizur deserve all the credit for their wonderful temperament in telling circumstances. That said, with due respect to Miraz and Mustafizur, India’s bowlers

should draw flak for not being able to get just one more wicket when they still had 51 runs to defend. On a sluggish track with uneven bounce, Mohammed Siraj (3/32) and Shardul Thakur (1/21) did well to focus on back-of-a-length deliveries that made Bangladeshi batsmen err. Prior to that, Virat Kohli, scoring only nine with the bat, took a fantastic catch at short cover to help get rid of a wellset Shakib-al Hasan, who was instrumental (5/36) in bundling India out for 186 in 41.2 overs.

Which brings me to the only other creature film that left me gobsmacked — Go Goa Gone, directed by Krishna D.K. and Raj Nidimoru. Zombies
