Gujarat polls: around 60% voter turnout till in 2nd phase covering 93 seats Sunvilla News: Ahmedabad A voter turnout of 58.80 per cent was recorded till 5 pm on Monday across 93 seats in the second phase of the Assembly elections in Gujarat, where polling was peaceful barring a few untoward incidents, the Elections Commission (EC) said. Agency News: Jammu The Aam Aadmi Party on Monday expressed concerns over the fresh terror threat to Kashmiri Pandit employees and demanded a probe into the leak of names of employees from the community posted in the Valley. Recently, a blog linked to The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, published a list of 56 Kashmiri Pandit employees engaged under the Prime Minister’s Rehabilitation Package, and warned of mounting attacks on them. External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar on Monday signed an agreement on the comprehensive migration and mobility partnership with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, who is on a two-day visit to New Delhi. The two leaders held wideranging talks focusing on ways to ramp up bilateral cooperation, especially in areas of energy, trade and climate change. “Germany is our largest partner in the EU. We are today supporting the India-EU negotiations on trade, investment and geographical indicators. We hope that they will progress well. The third round of negotiations on the FDA has just concluded,” Jaishankar said during a joint conference with the German counterpart. He further said that the bilateral ties have matured to a point where the cooperation between the two nations should be visible more to the rest of the world. “I also welcome Germany’s

Baerbock arrived New Delhi on Monday morning on a two-day visit, four days after India formally took over the presidency of the G-20 grouping. “I would like to explicitly thank you for taking Presidency of G20. You will shape with great responsibility. India taking this Presidency at a challenging times,” she said during a joint conference with Jaishankar. She further said that Russian war in Ukraine has put the whole world in a difficult condition. Climate change is putting livelihood under threat, she said while adding that G20 is responsible for 80 percent of the total emissions.
Reaffirming that forced religious conversion is a “serious issue”, the Supreme Court said on Monday it is against the Constitution. The court was hearing a plea filed by advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay seeking direction to the Centre and states to take stringent steps to control fraudulent religious conversion by “intimidation, threatening, deceivingly luring through gifts and monetary benefits”. The Centre told the court it is collecting information from states on religious conversion through such means. Appearing before a bench of Justices M R Shah and C T Ravikumar, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta sought time to furnish detailed information on the issue. “We are gathering
information from the states. Give us a week’s time,” Mehta said. He said statutory the regime will determine whether a person is converting due to some change in belief. The top court acknowledged forced religious conversion is a very serious matter. The apex court will now take up the matter on December 12. Forced religious conversion may pose a danger to national security and impinge on religious freedom of citizens, the top court had said recently, and asked the Centre to step in and make sincere efforts to tackle the “very serious” issue.

India saw a single day rise of 226 coronavirus infections, while active cases declined to 4,434, according to the Union health ministry data updated on Monday. The case tally stood at 4.46 crore . The death toll climbed to 5,30,630 with two fatalities reconciled by Kerala, the data updated at 8 am said. The active cases comprise 0.01 per cent of the total infections, while
the national COVID-19 recovery rate increased to 98.80 per cent, according to the health ministry website. There was decrease of 95 in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours. The number of recoveries surged to 4,41,38,554, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.19 per cent. 219.94 crore doses of Covid vaccine have been administered in the country so far under the nationwide vaccination drive.

Student protests against China’s strict zero-Covid policy seem to have largely subsided, even as President Xi Jinping told visiting European Union President Charles Michel in Beijing that the momentary unrest had been carried out by “frustrated teenagers.” But during the week, protest videos from cities like Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu and Urumqi made it past heavy Chinese censorship to tell the rest of the world about anger, dissension and frustration in the world’s second largest economy. So, what do these protests tell us about China? Are they just a flash in the pan? A symptom of dissatisfaction against the expanding control of the Chinese Communist Party in the “new era” under Xi Jinping? How is Comrade Xi positioning his own legacy in the pantheon of the Chinese greats – Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping? And how does India look at a rising China, especially in light of the border crisis in Ladakh? As the warm waters of the Arabian Sea washed the shores of Goa a few days ago, a bevy of influential China-watchers, both Indian and international, debated the subject under the aegis of the prestigious Institute of Chinese Studies, with a little help from the conservative German think-tank, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and Goa University. Certainly, the ICS forum agreed that Xi Jinping had consolidated his power, even if it was at the cost of ideology, and elevated himself to become part of the Mao-Deng-Xi trinity. If Mao made the people rise up and Deng made them rich, then Xi’s core message is to make China great again. In fact, the US-China contest is framed precisely in this narrative, about the years of humiliation experienced by the Chinese people at the hands of the West at least since the opium wars more than 150 years ago. Alka Acharya, ICS director and JNU professor, noted that the Chinese protests “come at a time when Xi Jinping has emerged as one of China’s most powerful leaders since Mao… and a major challenge to his leadership.” But, she pointed out, it was important to note that the protests “don’t really constitute ‘dissent’ in the sense of political opposition to the Communist Party,” which is why the Chinese leadership would likely adopt “a - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara calibrated carrot and stick” policy.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday stated that the controversy over the use of lotus in the G20 logo is ”not a non-issue” but she would refrain from raising it as the matter, if discussed outside, may not augur well for the country. The CM also contended that the central government could have chosen any national symbol other than the lotus for the summit’s logo, as the flower also represents a political party. The Congress has alleged that the Centre used lotus in the G20 logo in a bid to promote the Bharatiya Janata Party. It has been seen that some people marry tribal girls and their aim is to grab their property. The religious freedom act will be made stronger to check incidents of men marrying tribal women for grabbing the latter’s family
land. It will stop love jihad aimed at grabbing their land,” he said. ‘Love jihad’ is a term used by right-wing Hindu groups that claim there is a “conspiracy” to lure Hindu girls into marriage and convert them to Islam. “I’m the master trainer of Panchayats Extension to Scheduled Areas (PESA) Act. I am disseminating information about it in detail. This act will stop all such activities that are against the interests of the tribal community as many rights and powers have been given to the respective gram sabhas,” he said. “The government has realised that just because the panchayats don’t have the access and control over revenue records, many influential people buy land in their areas in the names of their servants without their knowledge. To check this, their land documents will have to be kept in the gram sabha,” the chief minister said.

The Becharaji Taluka Bariyaf village and Kheralu Taluka’s three villages on Monday claimed that their issues have remained unresolved for decades and hence they were not participating in the voting exercise. Till 1 p.m. not a single vote was cast in these four villages. Bariyaf Village sarpanch Raju Patel told, “For decades around half-a-dozen issues were pending, even after several reminders and personal requests nothing has been done. For example, in three decades, the Water Resources Department has certified that underground water
was not drinkable, old borewells were sealed but new borewells were not developed. “The primary school was developed in 1968, it needs regularisation and repairs. Since three terms, turn by turn each sarpanch has taken up matters with the respective authorities, but there is no result, Narmada water has not reached the village.” Patel on behalf of 1,000 villagers has stated that villagers have boycotted the voting and staged protests. “We will only vote if the Mehsana district collector promises in writing to resolve the pending issues,” he said. Four newborn babies die at government hospital in Ambikapur Agency News: Ambikapur Four newborn babies died in the special neonatal care unit (SNCU) of a government hospital in Chhattisgarh’s Surguja district on Monday, prompting the state government to order a probe, an official said. The deaths occurred between 5.30 am and 8.30 am at the Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH) in Ambikapur, around 300 km from capital Raipur, collector Kundan Kumar told. While the kin of the deceased
infants claimed that the babies, two of whom were on ventilator support, died as a result of a power outage in the hospital, the administration has maintained that the deaths can’t be linked to the power cut. “The four babies were in a critical condition and were admitted in the special neonatal care unit (SNCU) of the hospital. Of them, two were on ventilator support,” the collector said. As per preliminary information, there was a fluctuation in the power supply in the hospital between 1 am and 1.30 am.

The government is, according to reports, expected to take decisions on three issues — DA and DR hike, fitment factor revision, and clearing 18-month DA arrears. All these three decisions will fetch a bonus for government employees. Dearness allowance (DA) and dearness relief (DR) are revised twice a year, effective January 1 and July 1. The last hike, which benefitted about 48 lakh central government employees and 68 lakh pensioners, raised the DA by 4 per cent to 38 per cent. Before this, the government had raised the DA by 3 per cent to 34 per cent in March under the 7th Pay Commission. Going by the media reports, the DA and DR will be raised by 3-5 per cent in March 2023, effective January 2023. With this hike, the DA

Actor Suriya has opted out of Tamil filmmaker Bala’s upcoming movie Vanangaan. In a statement, posted on Friday, the filmmaker confirmed that the National Award winner has exited the project after there were some changes in the story. “I wanted to direct a new movie called Vanangaan with my brother Suriya. But due to some changes in the story, I now have doubts whether this story will be suitable for Suriya,” said Bala. “Surya has full faith in me and this story. It is also my duty as a brother that I should not cause even a small embarrassment to my younger brother who has so much love, respect and trust,” he added. Vanangaan would have marked the third collaboration between the Jai Bhim star and the filmmaker after the critically-acclaimed titles Nandha (2001) and Pithamagan (2003). Bala said it was “discussed and unanimously decided” that Suriya will withdraw from Vanangaan. The rupee appreciated 8 paise to 81.25 against the US dollar in early trade on Monday supported by a weak dollar in the overseas market. Forex traders said weak domestic equities weighed on the local unit and restricted the appreciation bias. At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 81.26 against the dollar, then gained further ground to touch 81.25, registering a rise of 8 paise over its previous close. On Friday, the rupee had settled down by 7 paise at 81.33 against the dollar. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.37 per cent to 104.15. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, advanced 1.05 per cent to USD 86.47 per barrel. Worldline India has released the ‘India Digital Payments Report’ for Q3 2022 today. The report highlights the analysis of the transactions available in public databases as well as processed by Worldline India in the third quarter (July – September 2022) and derived some unique insights. In Q3 2022, UPI, Debit and Credit cards, Prepaid Payment Instruments like Mobile Wallets, and Prepaid Cards executed 23.06 billion transactions amounting Rs 38.32 trillion. UPI Person-to-Merchant (P2M) and Person-to-Person (P2P) emerged as the most chosen payment method among consumers, accounting for 42% of total transaction volume. Conversely, in regards to value, UPI P2M contributed to 19% of digital transactions, whereas UPI P2P counted for 65%. This is followed by credit and debit card payments, which accounted for 7% of volume and 14% of value.
