The good, bad and ugly for markets from Nirmala Sitharaman’s Budget 2019 Notwithstanding the market reaction and super-rich people imagining their pocket getting lighter, the budget speech had fair bits of every shad

AG. GNS_New Delhi: The Budget 2019-20 has put out a positive tone and intent for the infrastructure sector overall. The transport sector got a big push and integrated

infrastructure development has been articulated as its vision. Execution however, is the key and a big ‘if’. A Rs 100 lakh crore investment has been envisaged in the infrastructure space over the next 5 years with a focus on mobility, rural access, urban rejuvenation and basic infrastructure for the masses. Mission mode infrastructure creation like SAUBHAGYA a n d U J J WA L A f i n d s replication in the Jal Jeevan Mission, which aims to bring potable water connection to nearly 24 crore rural

households. E-mobility has got a major boost via significant budgetary allocations as well as tax incentives for end-users. Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) in Railways for select areas is a very welcome move. The FM’s speech gave a path to consider — generating financing pools for vast capital requirements. The Credit Enhancement Guarantee Corporation and bond market measures, if implemented well, would yield benefits over the longer term. The short-

term recapitalization of public sector banks to the tune of Rs 70,000 crore has been provided to boost lending. The public private partnership (PPP) model needs to be rebooted and the FM has recognized the need for it. Removing the bottle necks off from the balance sheet has found a mention in the preliminary success of the Insolvency & Bankruptcy Code, wherein the overall NPAs have come down by Rs 1 lakh crore in the previous year. Supreme Court bench not happy with order of another bench In May, Justice Mishra and Sinha had ordered demolition of all illegal structures built on the notified CRZ at the Maradu municipality in Kerala’s Ernakulam District.

AG. GNS_New Delhi: A Supreme Court bench of justices Arun Mishra and Navin Sinha on Friday took strong exception to another bench overruling its demolition order against five apartment complexes constructed in violation of the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms in Kochi. They were upset when they were told that during the summer break, the coordinate bench comprising two judges granted relief to the apartment complexes against the demolition order. In May,

Justice Mishra and Sinha had ordered demolition of all illegal structures built on the notified CRZ at the Maradu municipality in Kerala’s Ernakulam

District. However, last month, another bench had assured that the review pleas will be heard in the first week of July, and then the vacation bench ordered a

status quo on the demolition of the apartment complexes comprising 400 flats. “We have serious objection [to] this...this cannot be allowed to happen...Heights of judicial impropriety...That bench should not have passed any order. We are saying this with full responsibility,” the judges said, rebuking the petitioners and their counsel for suppressing facts to secure the relief. Justice Mishra said: “You went to another bench and suppressed facts to get a different order.”

Air India engineers tow away a SpiceJet aircraft from the runway at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai on Friday. Union Budget: A lost opportunity This could have been a grand opportunity. Against the backdrop of a resounding mandate and an economy in urgent need of revival if it is to meet the aspiration of a new India boasting of a $5-trillion economy, this was the moment for the Narendra Modi government to unveil bold, radical reforms and offer solutions to the deep structural fault lines in the Indian economy. But Modi is known to be an incrementalist rather than a radical reformist. So perhaps bold ideas was expecting too much of his government’s first Budget in the second term. However, the challenges confronting the economy — growth slowdown, persistent agrarian distress and high unemployment — are serious and addressing them requires a clear policy vision and direction, including some breaks from the adhocism of the past. It is in the failure to offer this direction that Friday’s budget disappoints. At best, this budget can be viewed as a reiteration of commitments made in the interim budget in February. Unlike the last few budgets in Modi 1.0, this budget steered clear of any grand and expansive expenditure announcements, particularly on welfare. No new schemes, except for reiterating the focus on piped water supply under the Jal Jeevan Mission, were announced. And a close look at scheme allocations, across ministries and schemes, indicates little change from the interim budget. Even the Jal Jeevan Mission did not see a significant increase in allocation from its previous avatar, the National Drinking Water Programme. In her budget speech, the finance minister spoke of prioritising solid and liquid waste management, a logical but expensive next step from the Swachh Bharat Mission’s (SBM) focus on toilet construction. However, allocations did not increase. The interim budget reduced SBM funds by 32% from Rs 14,478 crore (2018-19 revised estimates) to Rs 10,000 crore. Current allocations see no change and stand at Rs 9,994 crore. Curiously, many flagship welfare schemes like Ayushman Bharat and PM-Kisan did not find mention in - Kapilkumar M. So I would make up my own. And that was my first taste of the adventure that is songwriting. As a teen, I would tinker with a guitar and write words to go with the tune. Aside from a short period after school, I don’t think I ever stopped writing

And because I was doing exactly what I wanted to do, it never felt like I was struggling. I was making little-to-no money, but my work always felt like fun. World Cup 2019:  Pakistan predictably knocked out of tournament despite big win over Bangladesh

SPORTS ROUNDUP

Pakistan had to win by an unlikely 316 runs to edge out New Zealand for a semi-final spot.

London:Dead rubbers have an easy tell. Lack of intent is the first. The odds of Pakistan defeating Bangladesh by a margin of 300 plus was always improbable, if not impossible. But how about still going straight for the jugular? It was certainly not beyond Pakistan who have the penchant for the theatrical, upsetting the applecart and inducing nervous breakdowns among supporters. They live to deliver the thrills, the outlandish moments of cricket. To take the safe path of reason is so not Pakistan. That this

match could be yawn-inducing was apparent when Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed made two important announcements at the toss, which he won. “No changes to our team. The loss against West Indies was disappointing. But we want to finish on a high note.” ‘No changes’ and ‘finish on a high’ don’t hit the right notes. To go in with an unchanged team when a T20 batting wonder like Asif Ali was unutilised is inexplicable when the scenario demanded Pakistan played out of their skin. But Ahmed— Pakistan had to win by an

MS Dhoni breaks silence on retirement, says ‘People wanted him to quit before Sri Lanka game’ MS Dhoni took a jibe at his critics by saying that a lot of people wanted him to retire before India’s next World Cup game against Sri Lanka at Headingley, Leeds on Saturday

New Delhi : Breaking his silence for the first time on retirement talks, MS Dhoni dismissed the reports as rumours and also took a jibe at his critics by saying that a lot of people wanted him to retire before India’s next World Cup game against Sri Lanka at Headingley,

Leeds on Saturday. Dhoni came under severe criticism for his approach in India’s last few World Cup games. Former India cricketers including Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly pointed fingers at Dhoni’s ‘lack of intent’ in the match against England, which India lost by

31 runs. Dhoni and Jadhav had scored only at a runa-ball when the required rate was touching 13 runs per over in the last 5 overs. Despite a lot of criticism from various quarters, Dhoni was received the backing from India’s team management including captain Virat Kohli and vicecaptain Rohti Sharma. On Friday, ahead of India’s final group stage match against Sri Lanka, Dhoni, as per an ABP News report, said he has no plans of retiring anytime soon however he was certain that some people wanted him to leave before the Sri Lanka match. I don’t know when I will retire. But a lot of people want me to retire before tomorrow’s game.

Business India to inject another $10.2 billion into state-run banks

Boosting credit growth is a key goal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, as it seeks to revive the economy and offset the effects of a shadow banking crisis that has been unfolding since September.

New Delhi: India will inject another 700 billion rupees ($10.2 billion) into state banks, giving them a bigger cushion to absorb loan losses and bolster credit growth at a time when the country’s shadow banks are in retreat. The new

infusion will “boost capital so that credit can be further improved,” Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Friday, while presenting the federal budget for the year to March 2020. New measures will be introduced to improve governance at the state

lenders, she added, without giving details.Boosting credit growth is a key goal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, as it seeks to revive the economy and offset the effects of a shadow banking crisis that has been unfolding since September.

Centre to streamline labour laws into set of 4 codes

New Delhi: The Narendra Modi government in its second term would streamline several existing labour laws into a set of four labour codes in a move aimed at reducing disputes, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said while presenting the Budget on Friday. “The government is proposing to streamline multiple labour laws into a set of four labour codes. This will ensure that process of registration and filing of returns will get standardised and streamlined,” said Sitharaman. “With various labour-related definitions getting standardised, it is

On Wimbledon Day 5, former world number one Karolina Pliskova served superbly to beat Hsieh Su-wei 6-3 2-6 6-4, while Caroline Wozniacki fell to a 6-4 6-2 defeat to Zhang Shuai on Friday

London:Did you see that on-the-up smashing drive from Shakib Al Hasan off Shaheen Afridi? But before that, it has to be registered it was in a losing cause, not unusual for Shakib this World Cup. Pakistan had first almost sulked, starting dourly without any intention with the bat but Babar Azam brightened them before another youngster Shaheen Afridi ended any Bangladeshi hopes of chasing 316 with a six-for. At the end of the game, as one walked around the arena, a few Pakistani shouted “India cheaters fixers” and placards were held “India you might win this one but gentlemanly game is dead”. All that anger is known territory, lets get back

to some Shakib rave, and to that shot in particular. But first some context. There are shots that define a cricketing nation. A whip off the legs from India, the punchy-squaredrives from Pakistan, the hook from the Caribbean, the pull from Australia, well-left from England (or so it used to be), and South African slog-sweep re-brought into fashion by Hansie Cronje (though that Zimbabwean Dave Houghton used to play that in the early 80’s). Then there are shots that a player plays that defies the nation’s history – and becomes a template for the next generation. Sachin Tendulkar and his feisty-onthe-up-punch standing on his toes.

London: Former world number one Karolina Pliskova served superbly to beat Hsieh Su-wei 6-3 2-6 6-4 on Friday and reach the Wimbledon fourth round for the second time. Czech third seed Pliskova fired down 14 aces on Court One to counter the unorthodox Hsieh’s fast feet and soft hands, securing

victory in an hour and 46 minutes. “I thought my serve was amazing today… I’d love to call myself a specialist on grass,” Pliskova said. “This year I’m doing better and I’ve made the second week. “On grass she’s a very tough opponent, she’s done a good job the past couple of months and I’m just super

pleased that I’ve made it,” added Pliskova, who lost to Hsieh in Dubai this year. and Lucie Brazdova (628.1, who eventually won the gold medal) in Qualification round to create the university record. “I am really thrilled with this achievement and really want to thank all my coaches who have trained me .

a vitriolic attack on the Congress after resigning from the Assembly membership, said he voted for "honest national leadership".
