India vs England: Dhoni, Nehra, Rahane to get match time in warm-ups

Virat captain; Yuvraj returns to ODIs, T20Is Virat Kohli will lead the 15-member Indian squad for both the ODIs and T20Is against England Agency | Mumbai

Virat Kohli officially took over the leadership of Indian cricket on Friday after the Test skipper was handed the responsibility of leading the one-day and T20 teams against England. Kohli’s elevation was on expected lines following Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s decision to step down as limited-over captain on Wednesday. Dhoni was still the preferred choice of selectors to keep wickets in both teams. However, the biggest gainer in Friday’s selection was Yuvraj Singh, who will don India colours after nearly a year. Yuvraj --- who last played a T20 International in the

World T20 in March last year and his last ODI was in December 2013 --- was rewarded for his consistent performance in the Ranji Trophy where he scored 672 runs in five matches for Punjab, which included a double century and a ton. Selection committee chief MSK Prasad said Yuvraj’s domestic performance paved the way for his comeback. “We should

appreciate the way Yuvraj has played in domestic cricket,” Prasad said after the selection meeting where they picked four squads --- ODIs, T20Is and two warm-up matches. “All these days we thought he hadn’t played a long innings. But he has scored a double hundred. He scored 180 (177) on a (seaming) Lahli wicket.” Although Kohli has been handed over the leader-

We are speaking out against Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, which is why the CBI is attacking us now.” The TMC supremo, who has declared an all out war against the Modi dispensation over demonetisation and arrest of her party MPs in chit fund scam, sought President Pranab Mukherjee’s intervention to “save the country from Narendra Modi”.

India’s GDP growth estimated to fall at 7.1 per cent in 2016-17: Govt (H.S.) | Bengaluru

Country’s GDP growth is estimated to slow down to 7.1 per cent in current fiscal, from 7.6 per cent in 2015-16, mainly due to slump in manufacturing, mining and construction sectors, the government data showed today without factoring in ‘volatile’ post-demonetisation figures. Read More | Yuvraj Singh, Ashish Nehra: Return of the old guard for India “I think, he is the best guy to look after the youngsters. We know what Mahi (Dhoni) is all about. It’s not just about whether he has stepped down or anything. He is a captain by nature who leads from the front. If you notice, he had also led a young team in Zimbabwe,” said Prasad. The only new face in the two India teams is Delhi dasher Rishabh Pant. The

India U-19 wicketkeeper-batsman was picked in the T20 squad after a prolific Ranji season, where he scored 972 runs in 12 innings, including a triple-century against Maharashtra at the Wankhede Stadium. Pant’s attacking batting put him on the selectors’ radar. However, it is learnt that Pant is not being groomed for Dhoni’s role. In fact, the selectors have Jharkhand’s India U-19 World Cup skipper Ishan Kishan on mind and that is why he has been picked in the squad for the second warm-up match against England at the Brabourne Stadium on January 12. Pant could be tried as opener

in one of the matches after the selectors did not include Shikhar Dhawan, who was included in the ODI squad but dropped from the T20 team. Prasad explained the reason for promoting youngsters in the T20 squad. “That is why we backed Rishabh as there are not many T20 games coming up. We retained Mandeep Singh because he didn’t get much chance earlier,” said Prasad. Meanwhile, it was a wakeup call for Ajinkya Rahane and comeback man Suresh Raina. Rahane was not included in the T20 team after scores of seven and an unbeaten four in the two T20 games against the West Indies.

China’s “technical hold” on New Delhi’s move on Azhar had expired on December 31 and India or any other UNSC member country has to now make a fresh listing request for the terrorist to be banned by the global body. UN Sanctions Committee’s listing would have forced

imposition of asset freeze and travel ban on Azhar by countries including Pakistan. China was the only member on the 15-nation UNSC Sanctions Committee to have opposed India’s application. China had dismissed India’s criticism, saying it had adopted a “just, objective and professional” attitude in deciding the issue. Earlier this week, India had asked Beijing to hear the “voice of the world” in dealing with terror and hoped it would be able to persuade the country to understand the “depth and evil” of the menace.

2 / Dt. 07-01-2017,Saturday Editors’ Picks SATURDAY, january 07, 2017 Harassment of women is rising. But is ‘on-the-spot action’ the answer? “For what?” I asked, surprised. I was investigating a molestation case involving a college girl and we had just arrested the main accused. Dragging an iron chair before me, the inspector made himself comfortable, satisfaction writ large on his otherwise generally frowning face. Being a vigilante rather than being just vigilant can be disastrous. The past few days dominated by the news of reported ‘mass molestation’ of women in Bengaluru’s MG Road on New Year’s Eve proved how damaging it is for journalists. Having screamed ‘mass molestation,’ we couldn’t produce the evidence. None came forward to lodge a police complaint and consequently no FIR was lodged. No less than 70 CCTV cameras – private and government – covered the stretch but scrutiny of the footage threw up no proof. Bengaluru survived a scare and its reputation was saved from being irrevocably tarred. The same cannot, however, be said of media’s credibility which has taken another severe hit. Remember Murthal, the Haryana town where dozens of women were reported to have been waylaid by mobs during the peak of last year’s Jat quota agitation and then sexually assaulted? As with Bengaluru, Murthal dominated the headlines for days. It all started with a small report in a local newspaper that quickly snowballed into a major issue of national shame and we all jumped in seeking immediate punitive action. Almost a year later, no evidence of the sex assaults have been found and the media is in the dock, with the police serving notices to journalists to corroborate what they had reported then. Bengaluru is Murthal 2. A newspaper claimed mass molestation and our entire tribe got instantly carried away. Hash tags such Bengalurushame and Bengalurumolestation trended as politicians and activists contributed to the din by trading charges. The noise drowned reason. There was no denying that Bengaluru’s downtown witnessed unruly scenes that night. As photographs and video grabs show, there was undoubtedly a melee, a great deal of pushing and jostling, and almost certainly a big brawl with a few distraught women caught in the middle. It was also in the realm of possibility that some men in the crowd would have sought to take advantage of the chaos. Ask any women and they will tell you such despicable beasts are everywhere: from buses and trains to all public places such as even Delhi’s iconic India Gate. This trait isn’t specific to Bengaluru. The city is as safe or unsafe as any other Indian city, though it also has the distressing record of only one conviction for every 100 sexual assault cases. But the indignation that India experienced across drawing rooms and television studios this week was primarily because of the reported mass molestation. Video footage of a woman being molested in another Bengaluru neighbourhood fuelled the outrage further. In the end, the angry debates haven’t made our public places any safer. If at all, the mindless sensationalism has reduced a serious issue confronting women such as my teenage daughter into a spectacle. Manufacturing news and then orchestrating outrage could be good for TRPs and circulation.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“It is high time the President intervened and saved the country. That person (PM Modi) can’t lead the nation. He should step down. There should be a national government,” - West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s attack on PM Narendra Modi’s demonetization drive today featured a new demand - that he should quit and make way for a “national government” to be headed by senior BJP leader LK Advani or Finance Minister Arun Jaitley or Home Minister Rajnath Singh....

Om Puri dead at 66: How global news outlets reacted to veteran actor’s demise (H.S.) | Mumbai Om Puri’s brilliance can be summed up in one scene from Govind Nihalani’s hard-hitting drama Ardh Satya. As Anant Welanker, a promising young man who is travelling in a bus, Puri tries to confront a fellow passenger who tries to touch Jyotsna Gokhale (Smita Patil). He does this without wanting to be seen as over-protective of Gokhale. Many actors wouldn’t be able to portray the many shades of expressions Puri brings out in this scene. In a film industry known for its obsession with near-perfect faces and bodies, Puri’s success seems like a metaphor for winning against the odds. He was one of the 16 FTII graduates who decided to do a film on Vijay Tendulkar’s marvelous play, Ghasiram Kotwal, in 1976. This turned out to be the beginning he was looking for. In a couple of years, Puri and his NSD partner Naseeruddin Shah, along with the likes of Amrish Puri, Smita Patil, Pankaj Kapur and Shabana Azmi, became pioneers of the parallel cinema movement in India. Directors such as Shyam Benegal, Mani Kaul and Kumar Sahni, who decided to drift away from escapist Bollywood, engaged these actors to achieve the unthinkable when stars such as Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan were on top of their game. Bhumika (1977), Aakrosh (1980), Aarohan (1982), Ardh Satya (1983): in film after film, Om Puri was turning into the perfect representation of a common man on the silver screen. This was the time when the government had a strict control over media, and celluloid representation of marginalised sections was limited to them speaking in an alien language and singing around fire in funny attire. Mainstream filmmakers couldn’t differentiate between a dalit and an adivasi. Thanks to Puri and his co-actors’ efforts, cinema had a better reflection of the social injustices. Puri’s foray into comedy as a shrewd businessman Ahuja in Kundan Shah’s Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron (1983) brought out a completely different side of an otherwise ‘serious’ actor. Years later, the West witnessed the same in East Is East (1999). His ability to switch from one dialect to another made him a favourite with Hollywood filmmakers who wanted to explore South Asia. His grip over diction and Urdu made this look easier than it actually was. The ‘90s saw him getting into character roles that were taller than the heroes. Be it in Narsimha (1991), Droh Kaal (1994) or Maachis (1996), he excelled in every part. This was in addition to films like Chachi 420 (1997) and Hera Pheri (2000), in which he explored purely comic opportunities. However, in the last couple of years, Puri was in the news for the wrong reasons. B-grade films, divorce and nasty comments against soldiers tarnished his tall image. But all said and done, Om Puri was that one commoner who dared to bring a change through his acting in cinema. And for that, we will keep going back to his films, and in the process, to the man he was.

Warning From A Director

(H.S.) | New Delhi We all know that Tiger Shroff is head over heels in love with Disha Patani. While Tiger is an established actor, Disha is still trying to make a name in the Hindi film industry. And it seems that to help her Tiger is trying to recommend her name to the directors. What happened next will really surprise you. Keep read-

The moment Tiger recommended Disha’s name, Nadiadwala turned down the recommendation politely. But he still did not get the point.

Later, Tiger cornered the film’s director Sabbir Khan and once again pitched Disha’s name for the role. When the news got to Nadiadwala, he was annoyed and how! On a related note, Tiger Shroff, who is often spotted with Disha Patani, has not accepted his relationship in front of the media yet. In the past when he was asked to comment on his relationship, he had said, ‘’We (Disha and I) are actors and that is a part and parcel of life. But I am not going to hide my relationship with her.

Sanjay Desai has been elected as president of KSCA while R Sudhakar Rao and Srinivas Murthy will take over as the new secretary and treasurer of the state association respectively. Desai and Rao, a former India cricketer who featured in a One Day International for the country, were both vice-presidents and also

India selection committee meet to go ahead after Lodha panel nod

(H.S.) | New Delhi In an unexpected incident, the selection meeting to pick the India squad for the one-day international and T20 international series against England got delayed due to “logistical issues” in Mumbai on Friday. The meeting was scheduled to start at 1230 pm IST at the Board of Control for Cricket in India office. The latest reports are that the meeting will begin at 0300 pm IST with BCCI CEO Rahul Johri empowered by the Lodha committee to oversee and convene the meeting. The

confusion was prevailed due to a lack of clarity as to who can be the selectors in the meeting after the Supreme Court on January 2 that removed the board’s president and secretary. Also, the Lodha reforms, which the apex court asked to implement immediately, make two of the current selectors ineligible. Many other office bearers of the board are also ineligible after the court order. The Lodha reforms made any office bearer of BCCI enligible if he has been in office for nine or more years. Any person who is above the age of 70 years is also enliglible to hold any post. Others who cannot hold a post in the BCCI are — minister, convict and government official. The BCCI is yet to accept all the recommendations of the Lodha panel.

Giving details about this three-day exercise, Gujarat Education Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama said in a press conference that this drive is aimed at assessing the quality of education imparted to over 54 lakh students of Class 1 to 8 of the

Around 4,500 people, including ministers and officials, would visit these schools and give them grade after interacting with students, teachers and other stake-holders,” he said. Schools, which obtain marks between 8.8 and 10 would get ‘A+’ grade, while those getting marks less than 4.8, would get the lowest grade of ‘D’, he said. ‘Gunotsav’ is the brainchild of Narendra Modi, who started the exercise in 2009 during his tenure as Gujarat CM.
