After completing a hectic campaign in Uttar Pradesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in Gujarat for a twoday visit on Tuesday, his seventh visit in as many months. Campaigning for the UP assembly election ends on Monday. Gujarat goes to polls later this year. In September, Modi had said he would visit his home state more often. In the last six visits, he covered various regions of the state from the Saurashtra to the tribal belt, inaugurating schemes and projects es-

pecially for irrigation and farming. On 8 March— the last phase of voting in UP—Modi will visit the historical Somnath temple near Veraval in Gujarat. He will offer a special ‘puja’ at the temple, where he is also a trustee. This will be Modi’s first visit to the temple after

SC on Gayatri Prajapati: Unfortunate ordering FIR is being given ‘political colour’ (H.S.) | New Delhi

After refusing to grant relief to Uttar Pradesh Transport Minister and Samajwadi Party leader Gayatri Prasad Prajapati in a rape case, the Supreme Court on Monday termed it as “unfortunate” that its earlier order directing the state police to lodge FIR against him was being given “political colour”. Leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party had frequently cited the case during the party’s poll campaign in Uttar Pradesh. Party president Amit Shah, at a poll rally in Ambed-

becoming prime minister in May 2014. Other trustees on the temple board include BJP president Amit Shah, former deputy prime minister L.K. Advani and former chief minister Keshubhai Patel. Advani’s Ram Rath Yatra that started from Somnath temple in 1990 had laid the foundation of the BJP in the country. Modi’ present visit is considered politically significant as this is an election year and the party has received some serious setback in its socio-political-economic base in the state where he was the chief

minister for over 13 years before becoming prime minister. Since Modi left for Delhi, the state has seen separate agitations by upper caste Patels and the Dalit community. In this period, chief minister Anandiben Patel who was handpicked by Modi, also had to resign due to age-related issues in August. Modi is expected to arrive at Surat airport on 7 March and proceed to Dahej for the inauguration of a petrochemical complex set up by ONGC Petro Additions Ltd, a joint venture company set up by Oil and Natural Gas Corp. Ltd (ONGC), a state government official said. Later in the day, he will also inaugurate a new bridge on the Narmada river near Bharuch and address a public meeting, he added, on condition of anonymity. Modi will attend a dinner organised at chief minister Vijay Rupani’s residence, where state ministers and BJP lawmakers will be present

Jayalalithaa’s Illness And Death: What the Reports From AIIMS Say Agency | New Delhi

J Jayalalitha suffered a massive cardiac arrest on the evening of December 4, 2016, and never recovered, said a medical report released by Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences, which had sent a team of experts to Chennai to treat the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. The state government today released the report. Along with that, it released a communique detailing the circumstances of Ms Jayalalithaa’s hospitalisation and death,

explaining at the outset that it was meant to quell “needless speculation” and “statements by some political leaders regarding her death”. Throughout the 75-day hospital stay of Ms Jayalalithaa, there has been speculation about her health, with many wondering whether the gravity of her true condition was largely hidden from the

public. Some of Ms Jayalalithaa’s loyalists even claimed that she had been poisoned. Supporters of O Panneerselvam had called for an investigation into Ms Jayalalithaa’s death. The AIIMS reports of four separate visits of its experts to the Chennai Apollo Hospital -- released by the government today -- said Ms Jayalalithaa, who was suffering from various chronic ailments including diabetes, had been hospitalised on September 22 with fever.

India’s stand consistent, nothing new in ex-Pak NSA’s revelation on 26/11 attacks: Kiren Rijiju Agency | New Delhi

Reacting to former Pakistan’s National Security Advisor Mahmud Ali Durrani’s admission of Pak-based terror groups involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terror attack, Union minister Kiren Rijiju on Monday said there is “nothing new” in his remark. “India’s position is very well known and consistent. There is nothing new for us,” Rijiju when his response on Durrani’s statement was sought. Addressing a conference on combating terrorism, Durrani had said the 26/11 terror

strikes were a “classic example” of cross-border terrorism, carried out by a Pakistan-based terror group, but maintained that the Pakistani government had no role in the attack. India has been blaming Pakistani government establishments for the country’s worst terror attack in which 166 people lost their lives. Home Minister Rajnath Singh had said on February 12, 2016

that it was abundantly clear that Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) was behind the deadly Mumbai attack and Islamabad should act against all those involved in it. Former Home Minister P Chidambaram had said on June 28, 2012 that Pakistani state actors were involved in the 2008 carnage. “When I say state actors, at the moment, I am not pointing a finger at any particular agency. But clearly there was state support or state actors’ support for the 26/11 massacre,” he had said.

quickest in List A history in India - but it was not enough. Gujarat pipped Mumbai on net run rate and qualified along with Bengal. Earlier, Goa’s innings last only 35 overs with only captain Sagun Kamat and Darshan Misal passing 20. Nayar did the bulk of the damage and was assisted by Dhawal Kukarni and Shardul Thakur who took five wickets between them. Bengal suffered their first loss of this season’s Vijay Hazare Trophy, against Gujarat at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Captain Parthiv Patel struck an 82-ball 88 in Gujarat’s seven-wicket win; Bengal were also through to the quarter-finals. Mohammed Shami,

playing his first competitive match after four months, conceded 36 runs in seven overs without picking up a wicket. Jasprit Bumrah, though, had sparkled with 3 for 27 to help bowl Bengal out for 168. Ashav Panchal and Rujul Bhatt, meanwhile, shared four wickets between them. Abhimanyu Easwaran (37), Aamir Gani (37), and Ashok Dinda (33) flickered briefly before Bengal were dismissed in 49.1 overs. Parthiv and Priyank Panchal then laid the foundation for the chase with a 69-run opening stand. Parthiv then fell with his team two runs away from the target, but Bhargav Merai and Bhatt completed the victory.

(H.S.) | New Delhi After doing without it for five years, the State Bank of India has announced that it will impose penalties on non-maintenance of minimum balance in accounts from April 1. It also announced a revision of charges on services like ATMs. But, does this step, one of many new changes in banking regulations imposed after demonetisation, help in achieving the government’s larger goal of currency recall– keeping the larger portion of people’s money in the banking system? A number of changes in banking regulations have taken place since the November 8 announcement of de-

monetisation and currency recall. But, in recent weeks, steps introduced by some major banks have betrayed one of the key purposes of demonetisation–large-scale adoption and sustained use of banking services to move India’s cash driven economy to a digital economy. One of the prime achievements of currency recall was that a huge amount of money came back into the banking system which gave it a much-needed boost. What was needed were easier banking regulations as an incentive for people to keep their money in banks. Penalties were definitely not the wisest way to go.

(H.S.) | Mumbai Mumbai crashed out of the Vijay Hazare Trophy despite chasing down 96 against Goa in 5.4 overs in Chennai. After allrounder Abhishek Nayar’s 4 for 23 skittled Goa for 95, Suryakumar Yadav and Aditya Tare shared an unbroken 76-run stand off 20 balls to mow down the target and seal an eight-wicket win. Mumbai, chasing the second quarter-final spot from Group C, won with 266 balls to spare - the second

Campaigning for the assembly elections is over, thank god..! Thank god it’s all over. The heat and dust and the incessant chatter over chai shops and roadside dhabas and the incredible variety of opinion at temples, mosques and ghats which sometimes reflected in TV chatter and what-you-had-read-that-morningwith-your-cup-of-tea and all the impassioned circle of life in between. It was magical, it was rejuvenating and we are grateful for these regular experiments in democracy which give us the opportunity to refurbish our constitutional credentials. But thank god it’s all over now and even those of us in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Manipur, Goa and Uttarakhand can get back to the daily business of living. To now recharge ourselves and take a good, hard look at the business of governance and democracy in between elections. This, after all, is the bread and butter of a secular nation and none other than Prime Minister Narendra Modi must lead the charge. Enough of him being just a BJP leader and taking on the opposition these last several weeks (“when you do good things, you think of the Gayatri mantra, but when the Samajwadi Party does something they think of the Gayatri Prajapati mantra,” the PM said at a Jaunpur rally the other day, referring to the rape charge against the Samajwadi party leader). He can now get back to being prime minister of all India. That is Modi’s mandate, to look at all citizens without lotus-tinted glasses, and to regenerate the mood for development irrespective of partisan politics, faith or gender. Uttar Pradesh’s outgoing chief minister Akhilesh Yadav also wasn’t able to resist a dig at Modi when he called into question an advertisement featuring Gujarat’s wild asses. Of course this was deliberate on Akhilesh’s part. Whether UP wants him back or not, Akhilesh has shown that he is here to stay. The young chief minister probably gave voice to thousands of thwarted youths whose ambitions have been in turn thwarted by their own parents. Now is the time for Akhilesh to move beyond the numbers game and partner with NGOs and others in reinventing his frayed-at-the-edges state. The Congress’ voice on the other hand has been so muted until the incredible Akhilesh-Rahul roadshow in Varanasi on Saturday, that it must have reminded the Congress of the good old days. Let them use this heaven-sent opportunity to return to the people. Certainly, the Gandhi family’s secular credentials are impeccable and they have made the kind of sacrifices for India few others have. But, India is changing. That is another lesson from this latest set of elections. It will not wait for the Gandhis to decide when they will want to lead the nation. As for Mayawati, the incredible energy she has generated by coalescing the Dalit and Muslim vote cannot be allowed to be wasted.

She speaks about how it’s high time women stopped freezing with shock and being helpless when someone tries to behave inappropriately with them. Danger is lurking everywhere and they must take their safety in their own hands and defend

with utmost courage. She further adds that the biggest weapon every woman has is her own self and it isn’t difficult to act and react to protect one’s self. To explain this correctly, she demonstrates a Kudo move, along with someone who’s trained her and who she considers to be the very best in the martial arts discipline, Akshay Kumar. Kudo is a modern form of martial arts and together, the duo teach the viewers Taapsee’s favourite self defense technique, which she calls, “Kohni Maar,” or hitting with the elbow. Both Akshay and Taapsee teach the viewers a few tricks to carry out “Kohni Maar” successfully, and fight eve-teasing.

Karan Johar sent everyone into a frenzy on Sunday morning as he announced that he has welcomed twins – Yash and Roohi Johar — through surrogacy. Soon Bollywood celebs started flooding the filmmaker’s timeline with their celebratory messages. However, his close friend Shah Rukh Khan didn’t post one and speaking at Mijwan, SRK revealed the reason why he has not said anything as he believes the filmmaker deserves a certain privacy at this special moment of his life. Karan has become a father to a baby girl and a boy. He has named the children Yash and Roohi. While Yash

is his late father’s name, Roohi is the anagram of his mother’s name, Hiroo. While confirming the news of his fatherhood, Karan had written on social media, “I am ecstatic to share with you all the two most wonderful additions to my life, my children and lifelines; Roohi and Yash. I feel enormously blessed to be a parent to these pieces of my heart who were welcomed into this world with the help of the mar-

vels of medical science.” Shah Rukh, who walked the ramp for Manish Malhotra at the Mijwan charity fashion show in the evening, was asked to express his thoughts on the big news about Karan. The actor hesitated to speak initially but after some prodding, he extended his best wishes for Karan. He, however, added that this moment is quite personal for the director and should be respected.

tion anybody wants to ask you is, “when are you getting married?” If you’re single then going to any family gathering is detrimental to mental health because you’ll be asked this pertinent question umpteen number of times; and if you’re a woman then god forbid, people will be after your life. Old aunties, extended relatives all gang up against you to enquire and find out the reason to your single status. A single woman is like a thorn in the society’s set up and she is subjected to endless interrogations and speculations about her life and choices. A lot of times people don’t shy away from floating rumours and coming up with wild and nonsensical speculations. People can’t accept the fact that a woman can be single and happy at the same time. The social setup has changed profoundly from our parents’ times. Now, women are financially independent and don’t require a husband to lead a secured life. Also, many of them prefer to be single and not compromise or make adjustments in life which they inevitably have to do when they get married. Even celebrities are not above this speculation as they are in the public eye all the time and people don’t bother toning down their words when speculating about their lives. Only a smart, sassy and intelligent woman who has already made a mark of her own like Sushmita Sen can handle the barrage of unnecessary questions that just don’t seem to stop.

India vs Australia: Virat Kohli’s struggle is hurting India

SPORTS ROUNDUP

Virat Kohli’s show in the current Australia Test series has not only affected him but the entire team (H.S.) | Bengaluru

Few weeks back, Virat Kohli said if he doesn’t step up with the bat, someone else will. But that is easier said than done. Despite that expected and sensible logic, Kohli is an invaluable asset for the team. His slump in the first two Tests against Australia have quite possibly hurt India more than the disappointing opening slot or the collapses in the first Test. Before Australia took the field in Pune for the series opener, Kohli had been in sublime form. He had scored double centuries in all four series prior to it – versus West Indies, New Zealand, England and Bangladesh. He had overtaken Virender Sehwag for most runs in a single season for an Indian batsman. He attributed his reason for the flow of runs to be the add-

ed responsibility of being the national side’s skipper. Move to the second day of the Pune Test and all those runs mean for nothing and it is a different ballgame altogether. Kohli’s stay in the middle is an extremely short one with Mitchell Starc sending him back on just the second delivery for a duck. A soft dismissal with Kohli chasing after a wide delivery and snicking it to first slip has done him in. Kohli goes for 0 from 2 balls. Move to the second innings, Kohli’s dismissal quite easily defines how terri-

bly prepared have been on the surface. He expects turn from Steve O’Keefe but this one doesn’t after pitching on off stump and Kohli lets it go to be bowled out. Kohli goes for 13 from 37 balls. On to the second Test of the series in Bangalore. The pitch is different but the surface still remains a challenging one. Batting first at a ground he’s accustomed to from his IPL days as Royal Challengers Bangalore captain, Kohli clearly has that second inning dismissal in the back of his mind.

Rangana Herath isn’t putting a lot of emphasis on Sri Lanka’s unbeaten record against Bangladesh in the five-day format as he prepares to lead his lineup into a home Test this week. Sri Lanka has won 14 and drawn two of its previous Tests against Bangladesh, the most recent addition to cricket’s elite group of 10 Testranked nations. But Bangladesh has improved rapidly in the Test format, and is coached by former Sri Lanka test cricketer Chandika Hathurusingha. Thilan Samaraweera, who played 81 Tests for Sri Lanka before retiring in 2013, is Bangladesh’s

ball, Steve Smith forgot he was an Australian and postured like he was doing the haka, as if his body movements were not exaggerated enough already. He bats with the certainty of a cat landing on its feet, but before and after playing the ball, twitches like a cat being electrocuted. Here he was like a cat being electrocuted on a tram-

poline. It had all started in the previous Test, with Ravindra Jadeja enacting a silent pantomime of Smith. There, Smith reacted with a pitch-defying hundred. Here, Jadeja found the early edge. But the show was not done. Matt Renshaw, all youthful exuberance, played along too. Stares were met with smiles; venom from the pitch was greeted with a shrug of the shoulders. It seemed you could throw anything at this 20-year-old, and he would still react in a way that endeared him to you, like Marshall Eriksen, the giant and gentle character from ‘How I Met Your Mother’. And this was in a situation where the tension was so high.

There were 154 balls in the morning session. That was 29 overs of grinding cricket. Just 47 runs were scored. Strike that. Just 47 runs scraped. Only one wicket lost, only one wicket claimed. But don’t be fooled. It was far from boring. For those 120 minutes, not an eyeball wavered. For those 7,200 seconds, even the most wandering of gazes was transfixed. And there was a collective creak heard every ball, as thousands of seats groaned from the strain on their edges. It was hard Test cricket. But the best part was the smiles on the field. Again, don’t be fooled. There were some insults traded, particularly during the

drinks break, when they were plastered over by ads for pink passwords and bereaved wives. But while the cameras were rolling, the players were trolling each other without a word spoken in anger. Ishant Sharma should easily win next year’s Oscar in the ‘Best Actor in a Horror Film’ category for the faces he made. The very next

He is a guy who is meticulous in his planning and leaves nothing for chance,” Sri Lanka captain Herath said. “Bangladesh has some advantage as its coaching staff is well aware of our strengths and weaknesses. “More than any other opposition that’s a big advantage they have.” Herath is leading the Sri Lanka team only because regular skipper Angelo Mathews is recovering from a hamstring injury that he sustained during Sri Lanka’s tour of South Africa. If one take a closer look at Australian off-spinner, Nathan Lyon, then it is hard to ignore that the 28 year-old has had a serious makeover since the end of the Australian summer. Much of the credit goes to the preparatory camp in Dubai where he bowled close to 1200 deliveries. And now Lyon is deservedly reaping all its benefits. Lyon exploits with the ball has made everyone sit up and take notice including his inspiration, R Ashwin. Lyon himself admitted to tweaking his action and approach to imitate the world’s leading spin-

ner, India’s R Ashwin. And it seems like the offie has now managed to go one notch higher than his counterpart. Lyon extracted tremendous bounce from the M. Chinnaswamy pitch as the Indian batsmen were found wanting. Ashwin on the other hand did not manage to do extract that much amount of bounce. A comparative analysis at the two reveals that Lyon, who has a more conventional action, uses a lot more of his body. Primarily his upper body. He is a lot more side on as compared to Ashwin who is a lot more open chested. Another factor is the much

bigger pivot for Nathan Lyon which results in the transfer of his bodyweight into the ball resulting in more bounce. While Ashwin on the other hand relies on finger spin with lesser body weight transfer. Another aspect is Lyon imparts more revolutions on the ball than Ashwin. Hence, the combination of bodyweight with more revolutions gets the ball to kick of the surface. It may be recalled here that

Lyon’s 8/50 in the first innings of the second Test in Bengaluru helped the visitors bowl out India for 189. While Ashwin picked up only 2 wickets in Australia’s first innings. But as far as numbers are concerned 30-year-old, R Ashwin is way ahead of Lyon. He has already bagged 24 five-wicket hauls in just 84 innings. While his average is brilliant as he goes for just above 25 runs per wicket.

a concern for selectors as well, following a 3-0 loss in South Africa in in the Test series followed by another sweep, this time 5-0, in the limited-overs internationals. “The conditions in South Africa were tough for us. But we can draw inspiration by our series win in Australia as that was the last home series we had,” Herath said of Sri Lanka’s 3-0 clean sweep at home against Australia last August. He noted that some of our batsmen have scored heavily in the last two weeks, with Dimuth Karunaratne scoring a double century against England `A’ and Dinesh Chandimal scoring 190 against Bangladesh in a warmup match. Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim has been relieved of wicketkeeping duties and he is expected to bat higher in the order.

Misbah-ul-Haq will lead Pakistan in next month’s Test tour of West Indies, ending speculation about his immediate future as captain of the side. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced that the 42-year-old Misbah will continue to lead Pakistan in the three-match Test series scheduled from April 22. The Tests will be preceded by a limited-overs series of four Twenty20s and three one-dayers. The PCB said in a statement that Misbah has conveyed his availability for the tour to Board Chairman Shaharyar Khan. “Accordingly the Chairman has approved his appoint-

ment as captain of the Pakistan test team for the upcoming Test series in West Indies,” the statement said. “The Chairman has also approved the appointment of Sarfaraz Ahmad as vice-captain of the Pakistan Test side,” it added. Sarfaraz is already the captain of the ODI and T20 national sides after Azhar Ali stepped down as captain of the one-day team at the start of the Pakistan Super League last month. The announcement brings to an end a debate which has been raging since last month on whether Misbah would continue as captain or batsman for the tour of West Indies. Misbah had earlier said.

Before it’s over in UP, Congress starts work on Gujarat election strategy

BJP has been ruling in Gujarat for about two decades; it had won 116 seats in the 2012 election Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

Hopeful of winning the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls in alliance with the Samajwadi Party, Congress managers have started working on a plan to wrest power from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Gujarat. The western state is slated to go to the polls later this year. The BJP, which has ruled Gujarat for about two decades, won 116 seats in the 2012 election, while the Congress got only 60. Business Standard does a reality check on the Congress’ pros-

pects. There is an opportunity for the Congress, but the grand old party needs to put in place a solid action plan to oust the BJP. According to Congress managers, the Gujarat BJP leadership has weakened after Narendra Modi, who served as the Chief Minister from 2002 to 2014, became the Prime Minister.

The Congress leadership feels that Modi’s successors Anandiben Patel and Vijay Rupani lack the appeal of the former chief minister. Besides, a lot of discontent is said to be brewing in the state BJP. A win in Gujarat is vital for the Congress as it will boost the party’s morale ahead of the 2019 general elections. Getting the
