Water to be used at Wankhede in IPL equals 29k people’s daily requirement: HC

Rapping the BCCI and cricket associations in Maharashtra and Mumbai over water wastage when the state is reeling under severe drought, the Bombay high court on Wednesday said ideally Indian Premier League (IPL) matches should be shifted elsewhere, where there is no water crisis. “Only if water supply to BCCI is cut, you will understand,” the court observed. “How can you (cricket associations and BCCI) waste water like this. People are more important or your IPL matches? How can you be so careless? Who

wastes water like this? This is criminal wastage. You know what the condition is in Maharashtra,” a division bench headed by Justices V M Kanade and M S Karnik said, while hearing a PIL filed by NGO ‘Loksatta Movement’. The court also asked whether according to BCCI and the other cricket bodies, cricket matches are more important. “Ideally, you should shift the IPL matches to some other state where water is in abundance,” the court observed. The court also told the state that ultimately it is the government’s responsibility and duty to do something about this

which MCA’s advocate said they would be using over 40 lakh litres water for the seven IPL matches to be held there. To this, the court said it is a huge number. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s advocate Trupti Puranik told the high court today that they are supplying water to Wankhede stadium only for drinking purposes. MCA’s advocate told the

court that they are purchasing water to maintain the pitches. This water is non-portable and cannot be used for drinking purposes. He also said that the association will come out with some contingency plan to tackle the water crisis. The advocate appearing for the petitioner, however, said several villages in Maharashtra do not even have water for sanitation, cooking and other purposes.

the BJP President said, “BJP’s identity is that of a nationalist party and it is the responsibility of our generation to take this identity forward. It is our responsibility to protect this nationalist identity.” “What BJP is today is due to the sacrifices of three generations of party workers who worked to protect the ideology and ‘Bharat Mata’ and BJP workers should remember this

and not let the sacrifices be frittered away,” he said. “We should not lose out on our unique identity. For us, power is not a purpose, but a means,” said Shah, who started and ended his slogan with the slogan “Bharat Mata ki Jai”. He said for BJP, power is a means to empower the poor and downtrodden and asked party workers to help light a lamp in the life of every poor by helping them benefit from the social security initiatives and schemes started by Modi Government. “We do not do politics of cunningness, but of character,” he said, asking partymen to strive in being a bridge between the people and the government.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has approached probe agencies of some foreign countries including the US’ Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in connection with its probe into the Pathankot terror attack. The help of the agencies is being sought even as central probe agencies still await a formal response from Pakistan for allowing a NIA team to visit that country for a thorough investigation. Official sources said on Wednesday that the help of some

of the agencies including the FBI had been sought for tracking some of the cyber footprints that had been left by handlers of Pakistan- based terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed(JeM) in the aftermath of the attack on the strategic IAF base at Pathankot on the inter-

vening night of January one and two. Immediately after the attack, Abdul Rauf, brother of Jaish chief Maulana Masood Azhar, was seen in a video taking responsibility on a website ‘alqalam.com’ and ‘rangonoor.com’ which were hosted by a US-based domain service

provider. While ‘alqalam’ was shut down before the arrival of Pakistan’s Joint Investigation Team(JIT) to India last week, the other one remains active but the video has been removed. Payments for the same website have been routed through an European country and NIA has sought details of the persons who made the payments and was subsequently renewing the contract with the domain provider, the sources said.

Shani Shingnapur faceoff shows how it caves in to male bias

No law permits temples to allow men and prevent women from entering and offering worship within the garbha griha. But no such law is needed. Because when on Saturday, April 2, hundreds of women led by Trupti Desai, president of the Bhumata Ranragini Brigade, tried to enter the Shani Shingnapur temple in Ahmednagar district, they were stopped and the law enforcement agencies of the state did nothing to protect them. Even though the women were waving orders of a division bench of the Bombay High Court declaring that, under the 1956 Maharashtra place of worship act, the 400-year-old males-only entitlement to the sanctum sanctorum of the Shani Shingnapur temple stands cancelled. No law permitted the locals and the women’s wing of the Shiv Sena, the Sanatan Sanstha, the Hindu Janajagruti Manch and its Ran Ragini Shakha to jointly form human chains and forcibly prevent the court orders from being implemented. None was necessary, since neither the lawmakers nor the implementation machinery of the state provided any shield to Trupti and her friends from being physically blocked and attacked by status quoists. Obviously, in the town that houses the Shani temple, it is not the laws of the state but custom and religious laws that still rule. And armed with those, the local society, in turn, can support an entitlement that was outlawed six decades ago. No wonder that when the judiciary extends legal cover to women beyond social and/ or state-sanctioned limits, it is seen not as an instance of the majesty of the law asserting itself, but simply as judicial activism. Is proof still needed about how illiberal, illegal and grossly gender discriminatory customs will continue to be legitimised by social sanction and protected by the law enforcers in India? No wonder, when matters such as personal laws and right to worship are adjudicated on and liberal laws are bandied about as proof of women having some sort of equality under our jurisprudence, the status quo supporters rush to publicise it as a threat to community and then justify their stonewalling young women’s agitation for asserting their legal rights on grounds of their debatable sexual purity, given their predilection for regular and impurity-invoking menstruation. “When does a state begin to die?” asks the Yaksha of Dharmraj Yudhishthir in the Mahabharata. “When it loses its hold over justice,” says Yudhishthir. After this confrontation, what is justice from women’s point of view? Today, while the judiciary has upheld the law of the land, the state has revealed itself on the side of a value system that remains pro-male in its operative norm.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“I never judge players based on their price. I understand how an auction works. What one actually earns in auction is not reflection of who you are. A lot of things happen in auction. You can’t control prices. Just because someone got so much money does not mean that the franchise considers him more important player than another,” - Delhi Daredevils ‘Mentor’ Rahul Dravid said in reference to a question on Pawan Negi being paid Rs 8.5 crore by Daredevils.

RBI likely to hold pause button until the end of 2016: Nomura

Agency | New Delhi Reserve Bank is likely to hold the pause button until the end of this year, largely owing to inflationary pressures, a Nomura report has said. However, domestic ratings agency India Ratings has said the central bank will deliver another rate cut of 0.25% this fiscal. Nomura in a research note on Wednesday said that it “expects RBI to stand pat until end-2016, as we do not see inflation undershooting 5% on a sustained basis as the cyclical factors driving disinflation (oil price falls, a slowdown in rural wage growth and the large negative output gap) are behind us.” Though in its forward guidance, RBI had said the stance of monetary policy will remain accommodative, the Japanese brokerage firm expects rates to be on hold until year end. Reserve Bank yesterday cut the key interest rate by 0.25% and introduced a host of measures to smoothen liquidity supply so that banks can lend to the productive sectors and indicated accommodative stance going ahead.

Messaging giant WhatsApp is rolling out end-toend encryption, a move that will potentially protect texts and voice calls of its over one billion users from hackers and “regimes”. The announcement has come close on the heels of a legal battle between Apple and FBI over the US agency’s demand that the iPhone maker help unlock its mobile phones. Many Silicon Valley players had supported Apple citing that user data privacy needs to be respected. “WhatsApp has always prioritised making your data and communication as secure as possible. And today, we’re proud to announce that we’ve completed a technological development that makes WhatsApp a leader in protecting your private communication: full end-to-end encryption,” WhatsApp founder Jan Koum said on the company blogpost. He added that the latest version of the app will encrypt every call, message, photo, video, file and voice message that is sent on the platform by default, including group chats.

Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel on Wednesday officially launched the state-wide implementation of National Food Security Act, which has been renamed as ‘Maa Annapurna Yojna (Scheme)’ by the state government. Though the Food Security Act was passed during the UPA regime at the Centre, Patel, in her speech at a grand launching function at Sanathal village near here, did not mention anything about the Act and sought to give all credit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who according to Patel,

envisioned the scheme. “When Congress was ruling this state, only 1.88 crore people were given food-grains at subsidised rates prior to 1995. Now, under this Maa Annapurna Yojna, 3.82 crore people of Gujarat will be benefited. Each of them will get rice at Rs 3 per Kg and wheat at Rs 2 per Kg,” said Patel. She even slammed past Congress governments in Gujarat for “not understanding the pain of poor citizens”. “Out of 35 kg given at subsidised rates during Congress rule, only 16 kg of food-grain was given at those rates, while for the

remaining 19 kg, government used to charge Rs 7.70. Now, PM Modi removed this condition and has announced to give the entire 35 kg of food-grain at subsidised rates,” she said. Patel claimed that Modi is the first PM of India who took care of poor citizens. “Due to efforts of Modiji, many poor citizens, including widows and those farmers who lost their crops, are now covered under this scheme and they no longer have to worry about feeding their families. No other PM has thought about poor people in the past,” said Patel.

Union Health Minister Shri J.P. Nadda while interacting with media persons at Circuit House in Ahmedabad at a press conference organized by Gujarat BJP said the centre is working on Aadhar connected health scheme covering 8 crore families. The government is planning to provide Rs 1 lakh annual health coverage to Economic Weaker Section class family. For every senior citizen in family there will be additional Rs 30,000 relief in expenditure. The assistant money will not be given to individual but the institutes that provide services. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched accidental insurance and life insurance schemes in Kolkata to bring these poor people in social security net. In reply to a question related to AIIMS, Nadda said Gujarat will get All India Institute of Medical Sciences(AIIMS) soon. He said the location of AIIMS will be decided mutually. When asked, “Bharat Mata Ki

Jay first and AIIMS then after?” Nadda replied, “it is because of Bharat Mata Ki Jay that Gujarat will get AIIMS. People elected a government believing in Bharat Mata Ki Jay and therefore so many states are getting AIIMS.” He added that during 1956-2000 there was only one AIIMS and India had to wait for Atal Bihar Vajpayee to become Prime Minister to see the second AIIMS. During Atalji’s government 5 AIIMS were established, and now Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has planned 11 AIIMS. Taking AIIMS to states was NDA government concept and we will take this concept ahead. Responding to the question related to lack of doctors in government health facilities, Shri Nadda said there’s an issue of shortage in supply of doctors nationwide, and to increase the supply, MCI guidelines need changes. Some relaxations in medical education sector have been already made to increase the supply of doctors.
