India’s First Case Of Coronavirus Variant XE Reported From Mumbai Agency News: New Delhi India’s first case of coronavirus variant XE was reported in Mumbai today, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has said in a media release. One case of the Kappa variant has also been detected. The patients with the new variants of the virus don’t have any severe symptoms so far. The new mutant may be more transmissible than any strain of COVID-19, World Health Organisation had said last week. The new strain was detected in the UK at the start of the new year. Britain’s health agency said on April 3 that XE was first detected on January 19 and 637 cases of the new variant have been reported in the country so far.

The patients with the new variants of the virus don’t have any severe symptoms so far. XE is a “recombinant” which is a mutation of BA’1 and BA.2 Omicron strains. Recombinant mutations emerge when a patient is infected by multiple variants of Covid. The variants mix up their genetic material during replication and form a new mutation, UK experts said in a paper published in British Medical Journal. The

World Health Organisation had said that the new mutation XE appears to be 10 per cent more transmissible than the BA.2 subvariant of Omicron. ”Early-day estimates indicate a community growth rate advantage of 10 percent as compared to BA.2, however, this finding requires further confirmation,” the global

health body had added.Out of the 230 Mumbai patients whose samples were sent for genome sequencing, 228 are positive for Omicron, one Kappa and one XE. 21 of the total 230 patients had to be hospitalised, though none of them needed oxygen or intensive care. 12 of those hospitalised were unvaccinated and nine.

Formulating Correct Alliance Strategy Key To Isolating Bjp-Led Nda The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] is holding its 23rd Party Congress in Keralathis month, from April 6 to 10. The delegates attending this five-day session will bedeliberating on both the national and international situations, and, on the final day, will beadopting a document which will guide the party leadership in framing strategy and tactics forthe next three years till the 24th Party Congress, possibly in 2025.The draft political resolution (DPR) for the 23rd congress was adopted at the meeting of thecentral committee in Hyderabad on January 7 to 9 this year. Since then three months havepassed and new developments have taken place at both international and national level. Atthe global level, Russia is in war with Ukraine and even after 39 days, there are no signs ofthis devastating war coming to an end anytime soon. China is giving critical support to theRussian invasion. CPI(M) has condemned Russian ‘invasion’, though simultaneously therole of NATO and the West’s moves to endanger the security of Russia have beenmentioned. Globally, the communist parties are also taking position against the authoritarianPutin, while equally taking to task the West for its warmongering. At the national level, the assembly elections were held in five states, and in four states, theBJP retained its power. In Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party gave a good fight but YogiAdityanath was finally winner with comfortable majority. The Congress, the main challengerto the BJP in four states, lost its ruling state Punjab to AAP in a humiliating defeat. AAP nowrules Punjab and Delhi, and the party has announced its decision to make a strong bid forGujarat and Himachal Pradesh, which will go for assembly elections by the end of this year. The massive roadshow organized by the two AAP chief ministers in Ahmedabad last weekhas given fresh confidence to AAP. Both the BJP and the Congress are worried, theCongress more. The party draft has correctly focused on fighting BJP as the main enemy both at political andelectoral level and reiterated the last party congress observation that BJP and the Congresscannot be equated at the same level. The main task is to isolate and defeat the BJP. So theparty will cooperate with secular opposition parties in Parliament on agreed issues. Outsidethe Parliament, the party will work for the broadest mobilisation of all secular forces againstthe communal agenda of the BJP.The DPR has mentioned that the BJP has emerged as the principal political party of theIndian ruling classes and has spread its influence all over the country on the back of theRSS network that is rapidly expanding. The BJP currently leads the governments in 12states and is in coalition in six others. It controls both the houses ofParliament. All this information in the DPR document is fine, but not adequate enough to understandwhat a mammoth organisation the BJP is. In any war, real or electoral, one must understandthe strengths of the main enemy and take follow-up measures to meet the challenge. The CPI(M) has declared the BJP as the main enemy in its DPR. So the delegates must knowmore about the political party they will be fighting.BJP is now the political party with largest membership in the world. The Party claims amembership of 19 crore and this may go up to 21 crore by 2024. RSS has a membership ofmore than 20 crore, though there are a large number of common members The present BJPunder the dominant leadership of Narendra Modi is one of the most modernised parties inthe world. The party machinery works round-the-clock and its information cell and the think-tanks continuously monitor the status of the party organisation, irrespective of whether thereare elections or not.The Party is mega rich. Earlier dependence on traders and petty shoppers is gone. Theindustry people in general contribute to the party funds and render other assistance. Thereare many big industrialists who think themselves as Hindu nationalists. They like NarendraModi. That is why, 90 per cent of the electoral bonds go to BJP. The Congress used to getconsiderable funds from the corporate sector during its tenure, but under the regime ofNarendra Modi, the corporate funding to the Congress declined drastically and now aftereight years, it has come to a mere trickle.Further, the BJP’s big source of funding is their global organisation ‘Overseas Friends ofBJP’ and the VHP bodies in the western countries, especially in the UK and the USA. Duringmy visit to Germany, UK and USA, I met many senior BJP functionaries who boasted that“even if the funds in India dry up for the BJP, we can take care of the entire electionexpenses”. This financial muscle power has been added to - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara the organisational muscle power.

‘Dhoni is one of those genuine massive high-pressure players, Yuvraj isn’t’ Agency News: New Delhi MS Dhoni’s decision to promote himself ahead of Yuvraj Singh and then play a matchwinning knock of 91* in the final of 2011 World Cup against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai remains one of the most daring, instinctive and talked-about decisions in the legendary wicketkeeper-batter’s illustrious career. Dhoni had scored only 150 runs in the tournament in 8 matches with not a single fifty to his name till then. Yuvraj, on the other hand, had already scored a century and four fifties. India’s mental conditioning coach for that World Cup, Paddy Upton, however, believes that it was the right call. Upton said Dhoni is one of the very few players in

the world who is meant for “massive highpressure” situations.“…He (MS Dhoni) would do what he is the best in the world at – which is seeing a team home in a chase in the second innings in a white-ball game. He had delivered nothing in the eight games before the final. Yuvraj had done his bit, he had

played his tournament. He was done, he was spent. That moment was set up for someone like Dhoni. There are very few players in the world who are genuine “massive highpressure” players. Yuvraj Singh is not one of those, Dhoni is,” Upton wrote in his column for the Indian Express. At 114/3, India were still under some pressure when Dhoni joined Gautam Gambhir in the middle. It was the 109-run stand between the two experienced players that turned the game towards India. Gambhir fell for 97 but Dhoni remained unbeaten on 91 and Yuvraj, who came in to bat at number 6 scored a solid 21* off 24 balls as India reached the 275-run target with six wickets in the bank to lift the World Cup after 28 years.
