PM Surveys Cyclone Damage, Praises Naveen Patnaik For “Good Planning”

Will form a strong government: Akhilesh

Bhubaneswar : Prime Minister Narendra Modi today praised Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s handling of Cyclone Fani after carrying out an aerial survey this morning to review the damage after the storm that has killed over 30 people in the state. “Naveen b a b u ’s p l a n n i n g w a s excellent,” PM Modi told reporters, the Chief Minister standing next to him. Naveen Patnaik accompanied the Prime Minister on the aerial survey. “In the middle of a busy election schedule, everyone concerned prioritized this (Cyclone)... I must congratulate the state government, the authorities and those involved in evacuations. The work done is commendable. There has been an excellent coordination between the Centre and the state,” said the PM. Modi can be seen discussing details of damage with Mr Patnaik. After the

aerial survey, PM Modi held a review meet with the top bureaucrats in the state. “Another thing that is worthy of praise is the cooperation by the people, especially the fishing community. Generally if you tell people to leave their homes, they are reluctant, but this time the people of Odisha have shown the entire country how to act during an emergency such as a cyclone. I thank the people of Odisha for their tremendous cooperation,” the Prime Minister said. The PM’s praise for Naveen Patnaik comes in the middle of the national election campaign, during which he and the ruling BJP have repeatedly attacked the Chief Minister. Mr Patnaik’s BJD is a former ally of the BJP and despite their strain over the years, is seen as mostly likely to extend his support if PM Modi’s party really needs it.

New Delhi : Trinamool Congress supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Monday said that ‘Jai Shri Ram’ is the BJP’s slogan and it is trying to force everybody to chant it. “Does Ramchandra become BJP’s election agent when election comes?” the fiery TMC supremo asked at public rallies here. None can be forced to chant what Narendra Modi or BJP want, she said adding that West Bengal’s culture has never been what the saffron party is trying to make it. The slogan of the people of Bengal is ‘Vandemataram’ of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and ‘Jai Hind’ of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, she said. “Why should I give your slogan? I will not chant the name of rotten Modi or rotten BJP. They are trying to erase the culture of Bengal,” a combative Banerjee said. A video has appeared in the social media that shows

Fourteen seats in Uttar Pradesh, 12 in Rajasthan, seven each in West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh, five in Bihar and four in Jharkhand went to polls, in addition to Ladakh and Anantnag constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir. This is the first election in Ladakh division following its split from the Kashmir division earlier this year.

Almost 1 million people from Odisha were evacuated to nearly 5,000 temporary shelters hours before the cyclone made a landfall in Odisha on Friday. Gorakhpur : Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav warned on Monday that if the Congress or the BJP come to power, the two parties would deprive the common people of basic necessities. “The BJP had promised good days, respect for farmers, security and safety of women. We have come up with a big alliance to make a strong government,” Yadav said at rally in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district. “Let’s join hands and construct a new India.” The SP president blamed the Congress for the backwardness of the country even after seven decades of Independence. “The BJP and Congress are not good. If these parties are elected, they will construct their houses and toilets, while common people will be deprived of everything,” Yadav said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressing rallies at Jhargram and Tamluk in the state Monday said that in Bengal people are not allowed to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and that saying it in public places is regarded as a crime here. Addressing the rallies, Banerjee said that it is not the culture of people of Bengal to chant a single person’s name. “When we do Durga Puja we say Jay Ma Durga, when we do Kali Puja we say Jay Ma Kali but we do not give any particular slogan always like the BJP,” she said. Taking a dig at the saffron party’s vow to construct a Ram Temple at Ayodhya, she said that while she has renovated Kali temples at Dakshineswar, Tarapith and Kankalitala in the state “BJP has not been

able to set up a single Ram temple in the country in five years though they chant Jai Shri Ram.” Alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was trying to do politics over Cyclone ‘Fani’, Banerjee said “If you (Modi) think you will politicise it (cyclone) you must remember that I too understand politics.” The chief minister said that in 2015, 2016 and 2017 there were floods in the state but no relief was given to it by the Modi government despite several demands by her.

New Delhi : Amid reports of violence and EVM malfunctioning, the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections saw a voter turnout of 62.56% on Monday. 51 constituencies across seven states went to polls that have sealed the fate of political heavyweights including Congress president Rahul Gandhi, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, union minister Rajnath Singh and Smriti Irani. Don’t consider Modi the country’s PM, hence didn’t sit for meeting over cyclone: Mamata

New Delhi : Hours after Narendra Modi claimed that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee did not respond to his requests for talks over Cyclone Fani, the TMC supremo on Monday said she did not sit for the meeting as she doesn’t consider him the country’s prime minister. “I don’t consider him the country’s PM, hence I didn’t sit for the meeting. I don’t want to be seen with him on the same platform. I will speak to the next PM. We can take care of cyclone damage by ourselves. We don’t need Centre’s help ahead of polls,” ANI quoted Banerjee as saying at a rally in West Bengal’s Jhargram. Mamata’s remarks came after PM Modi earlier in the day accused her of “playing politics” over cyclone relief. “The Centre is involved in

relief work but the speed breaker in West Bengal tried to play politics over this situation. I tried to talk to her (Mamata) but her arrogance is so much that she refused to talk to me. I kept waiting with the hope that she will call back but she did not,” PM Modi said at a rally in West Bengal’s Tamluk district. On PM Modi’s remarks that the TMC was reprimanding people shouting ‘Jai Shri Ram’, Banerjee said that it was the slogan of the BJP and the party was trying to force everybody to chant it. “Does Ramchandra become BJP’s election agent when the election comes?” Mamata asked. “Why should I give your slogan? I will not chant the name of rotten Modi or rotten BJP. They are trying to erase the culture of Bengal,” Banerjee said.

In a tweet to the Election Commission, Irani shared a video of a voter who was allegedly forced to press on the “hand” symbol (of the Congress), when she wanted to cast her ballot for “lotus” (BJP’s symbol). No official complaint, however, was filed. Phase one of the elections recorded a turnout of 69.50%, phase two 69.44%, phase three 68.40% and phase four 65.51% The sixth phase of the Lok Sabha elections will be held on May 12 and the seventh and last phase will be held on May 19. The voting is being held in seven phases, between April 11 and May 19, involving close to 90 crore voters. The results will be declared on May 23, ten days before the term of the current House expires.

Muzaffarpur Shelter Home Case: SC Directs CBI to Complete Probe on Murders by June 3

New Delhi : The Supreme Court Monday directed the CBI to complete by June 3 its probe into the alleged murder of 11 girls at a shelter home in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur and asked the agency to file a status report. A bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Deepak Gupta said that since the matter was “urgent”, it would be heard by a vacation bench on June 3. “Office to list the matter on June 3 before the vacation bench of this court. In the meantime, the ongoing investigation, as stated in the reply of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), be completed and all necessary actions in accordance with the law, including the filing of the status report before this court, be also completed,” the bench said in its order. The bench initially asked the CBI to complete the probe related to alleged 11 murders within two weeks keeping in view the urgency of the matter,

but later asked it to do so by June 3. Attorney General K K Venugopal, appearing for CBI, told the court that completion of probe on this aspect “will not be possible” within two weeks. He said that 11 girls were supposed to have been murdered and as per CBI’s recent affidavit filed in the apex court, it was found that there were a total of 35 girls with identical names who at one time or the other had stayed there. “11 girls are supposed to have been murdered. In one case, we have recovered bones also,” he told the bench. In the affidavit, the CBI had

told the court that 11 girls were allegedly murdered by key accused Brajesh Thakur and his accomplices and a “bundle of bones” was recovered from a burial ground in Muzaffarpur shelter home sexual abuse case. Several girls were allegedly raped and sexually abused at an NGO-run shelter home at Muzaffarpur in Bihar and the issue had come to light following a report by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). The probe into the case was transferred to CBI and the agency has chargesheeted 21 people, including Thakur.

New Delhi : The Justice S.A. Bobde-led in-house inquiry panel examining the sexual harassment allegations against Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi on Monday gave the top judge a clean chit. Power thieves drain India’s electric car hopes

Dirty air has finally become an issue in Indian election manifestos, along with perennial subjects such as temple-building and farmers’ incomes. That shouldn’t be a surprise: Even politicians can’t escape air pollution, which has reduced life expectancy in areas near the capital New Delhi by more than 12 years. To address the issue, the government earlier this year laid out a three-year subsidy program for electric vehicles valued at about $1.4 billion — about 10 times larger than a previous plan. There’s just one flaw in this impressivelooking commitment to putting more clean-energy vehicles on the roads: It’s likely to exacerbate rampant theft of electricity. India is home to over 2 million electric two-wheelers and rickshaws — more than the number of electric cars in China. Sales of such smaller electric vehicles continue to rise. But in the absence of charging infrastructure, many of their drivers have been illegally siphoning power. Only 10 percent of the latest subsidy program is allocated for charging stations. More than a quarter of all the power India generates is either pilfered for various purposes or lost in transmission, according to figures cited in local media as of mid-2018. The power sector loses more than $16 billion a year to theft — more than any other country in the world. Power stolen to charge three-wheeler rickshaws costs more than $20 million a year in Delhi alone. There are 100,000 such vehicles on the capital’s roads, and only a quarter are registered. Losses for state electricity retailers rose more than 60 percent in the first nine months of the fiscal year through December. The lack of charging infrastructure has also contributed to puny demand for green passenger cars. Mahindra Electric, a unit of automaker Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., discontinued production of its first electric car this month. Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., the country’s largest carmaker, only recently started making electric vehicles. Notwithstanding, the government keeps setting itself big goals. Two years ago, India’s plan envisaged a “transformative” target of making all three-wheeler vehicles electric by 2030. Even under a business-as-usual scenario, it expected 40 percent of personal passenger cars to be battery-electric by then, from zero in 2015. In a report this month, a government planning body lauded the latest subsidy program and said it had the potential to boost penetration rates for electric-vehicle sales to 30 percent for passenger cars, 70 percent for commercial cars, 40 percent for buses and 80 percent for two- and three-wheelers by 2030. Compare those goals with other countries’ targets and India’s start to look even more unrealistic: China, the world’s largest electric-car market, has been at it for a decade and is still targeting only 20 percent of total sales to be electric or hybrid by 2025. Just having a green subsidy program in place is no longer enough.(1) Sure, it’s a step in the right direction, but as China and other countries are realizing, incentives have to be targeted, adequate and suited to the country’s situation. Assuming a moderate level of adoption, India needs about $6 billion for charging infrastructure, $4 billion in incentives and a further $7 billion to build out battery capacity, according to estimates by Goldman Sachs Group Inc. That’s a far cry from the enlarged $1.4 billion outlay, with its $140 million for charging. The latest subsidy plan focuses mainly on public transport for rickshaws, cars and buses, and on two-wheelers only for personal usage. That means most of the burden for providing charging stations still falls on the government for now — not home-chargers. The power-generation capacity just isn’t there to support such a program. Even the highest-income neighborhoods of Delhi have to contend with electricity cuts, let alone rural and lower-income areas. A target of installing almost 3,000 charging stations in major cities and at intervals of 25 kilometers on major highways, as the plan - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara stipulates, seems farEditor fetched.

Why John Campbell, Shai Hope’s IPL 2019, Playoffs schedule: All you need to know, record 365-run opening is significant Campbell scoring 179 dates, venues, timings runs off 137 balls and Hope making 172 off 152 deliveries add serious muscles to the West Indies top-order, with an eye to the World Cup.

AG. GNS_Kolkata: John Campbell and Shai Hope’s world record 365run opening partnership against Ireland has to be taken seriously. Ireland will not feature in the upcoming World Cup, but they are a competitive side for a while now. Just two days ago, they had made England toil hard for a victory in an ODI. A lower-order partnership between Ben Foakes and Tom Curran eventually took England over the line in a lowscoring affair. So, Campbell scoring 179 runs off 137 balls and Hope making 172 off 152 deliveries add serious

muscles to the West Indies top-order, with an eye to the World Cup. Hope is an established player across formats and a certainty in the playing XI. Campbell is a new-comer, who made his international debut in the home series against England earlier this year. The century against Ireland yesterday could be the springboard for him. The 25-year-old is not in the West Indies World Cup squad, but the teams are allowed to make changes till May 23 and a good tri-series could bring Campbell in contention. An excess of batting riches will give the West Indies

team management a happy selection headache in the World Cup. Chris Gayle had a great ODI series against England, where he scored 424 runs including two centuries in five ODIs. Given the x-factor that he offers, Gayle would be an automatic choice to start with. But the likes of Evin Lewis will keep him on his toes. The ‘perfect competition’ will serve the West Indies cricket well in the World Cup. The likes of Lewis, Shimron Hetmyer, Nicholas Pooran and Campbell – if he eventually gets the nod – will breathe down the star players’ neck.

AG. GNS_New Delhi : The Kings XI Punjab signed off from the IPL 2019 with a win over Chennai Super Kings, who have qualified for the playoffs. KXIP chased down the required runs in style, all thanks to opener KL Rahul, who also piped Faf du Plessis to grab the Man of the Match award. CSK batted first after losing the toss and only Du Plessis (96) and Suresh Raina (53) were the ones who could play on a decent track, but the ball was

holding a bit on the surface. They added 120 runs for the second wicket and put CSK on a path of over 180 runs. However, some brilliant bowling by KXIP bowlers, especially Sam Curran (3/35) and Mohammad Shami (2/17) kept the Dhoni-led team to 170/5 in 20 overs. KL Rahul and Chris Gayle opened the innings for KXIP and put on 108 runs for the first wicket in 11 overs with KL Rahul scoring 71 in 36 balls with 7 fours and 5 sixes to his name

and achieved a huge feat of outscoring Chris Gayle (28 in 20 balls). Nicholas Pooran then made 36 in 22 balls and ensured KXIP reached the target in 18 overs for the loss of 4 wickets. Rahul was particularly severe on Harbhajan Singh three fours and 2 sixes in the fourth over of the match. He was so good that even opposition captain MS Dhoni praised him in the post-match conference, and was quoted as saying, “You need to give the credit

Rs 500-crore fine on Volkswagen: ‘No coercive action’ for now, says SC

New Delhi : In a relief to German car manufacturer Volkswagen, the Supreme Court Monday agreed to hear its plea against National Green Tribunal’s Rs 500 crore penalty and put on stay any “coercive steps” against the company till the hearing is completed. The NGT in March had ordered Volkswagen to pay a fine of Rs 500 crore for causing damage to the environment by programming its diesel engines with cheat devices. A bench headed by Justice S A Bobde stayed the imposition of fine for the time being against the multinational automobile company. While directing Volkswagen to pay the fine within two months, NGT on March 7 had said that the funds will be utilised towards improving air quality in the NCR of Delhi and other highly polluted areas. The NGT panel was formed in November last year in the wake of the 2015 global emission scandal or ‘Dieselgate’ when the company was found guilty of

intentionally programming its diesel engines with cheat devices to meet US regulatory standards but actually emit up to 40 times more Nitrous Oxides (NOx) in real-world conditions. Stating that the NGT order is “arbitrary and unreasonable”, Volkswagen said the fine was imposed even when an NGT-appointed committee (CPCB) report found that vehicles of the Volkswagen Group companies are in compliance with regulatory environmental norms in India. “The NGT has imposed a penalty of Rs 500 crore upon the Volkswagen Group companies, without

determining any provision of law that has been violated,” it said in its appeal to the apex court. The four-member expert panel constituted by the NGT had recommended that Volkswagen should be made to pay at least Rs 171.34 crore as a “conservative” fine for damage to health in India. The panel, which used Delhi as the base city to calculate the damages, estimated that Volkswagen cars released approximately 48.678 tonnes of NOx in 2016. The penalty was determined on the basis of the 3.27 lakh Volkswagen cars that had deceit software installed in India.

New Delhi : India batting great Sunil Gavaskar believes England are a transformed one-day international side since their shock exit from the 2015 World Cup and rates them as favourites to win their maiden crown on home soil in July. Eoin Morgan’s side, whose quest for a first 50-overs title begins against South Africa at The Oval on May 30, top the world rankings enter the tournament as the one of the most consistent teams in the format. “England are the favourites. Simply because of the way they are playing cricket, the complete turnaround in their cricketing attitude and approach after their disastrous 2015 World Cup,” Gavaskar said. “England have got a very good team, they have got lots of confidence. You have seen them in all the recent matches and they have been

playing outstanding cricket.” Morgan’s men have played a fearless brand of cricket in the recent years and since the start of 2018 have come out on top in bilateral ODI series against World Cup holders Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and India. Gavaskar believes having home advantage could also be telling after Australia won as hosts in 2015 and India did the same four years earlier. “If you go by what has happened in the last couple

of World Cups, the host team has won,” he added. “But, of course, in cricket anything can happen. While England start the favourites, there are other teams which are also playing some good cricket.” Gavaskar was speaking after pledging to sponsor 34 paediatric heart surgeries for economically deprived children at the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani International Centre for Child Heart Care at the satellite city of Navi Mumbai.

AG. GNS_Rajasthan Royals emptied their pockets to close the final bid for Jaydev Unadkat at Rs. 8.40 crore in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 auction. The Saurashtra pacer was bought by the Jaipur franchise following his prolific run in the domestic season but Unadkat failed to make his performance count in the IPL 2019, drawing severe criticism by fans on social media. Unadkat broke his silence on Sunday as he took to Twitter and vowed to come back stronger. He also enlightened fans that his comeback has always been stronger after every downfall he faced in his career. His tweet received mixed reactions from fans, with some supporting him and others further criticising the pacer for his poor run in the IPL 2019. Unadkat

featured in 11 matches for the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2019. But his dismal performance saw him claim only 10 wickets. The 27-yearold’s best bowling figures of 2/26 in the season was also not an impressive one. The Gujarat-born player’s best bowling performance came in the IPL 2017, where he found rhythm to scalp

24 wickets, with the best bowling figures of 5/30. Unadkat has played a total of 73 IPL matches. He has a bowling average of 28.46 and an economy rate of 8.73, with two five-wicket hauls to his name. Rajasthan Royals finished seventh in the IPL 2019 points table with 11 points, winning five matches from their stipulated 14.

New Delhi : David Warner made his return to the Australian cricket team on May 6 in an unofficial warm-up match against New Zealand XI at Brisbane. He was made to bat at the number 3 spot, as Aaron Finch and Usman Khawaja opened the innings. Australia XI won the match by 10 balls, as they successfully chased down 216, as New Zealand XI were all out for 215. David Warner scored 39 runs off 43 balls, with a strike rate of 90.69. Warner was in very good form in this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL), as he scored 692 runs at an average of 69.2 in the 12 matches he played for the SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH), at a strike rate of 143.86. His best score was an unbeaten 100 against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on March 31. Warner scored all those runs for

SRH in the opening position and he would have thought of opening the innings for Australia as well. However, the Australian management seems to have stuck to the opening combination of Aaron Finch and Usman Khawaja which they forged in India and the UAE. This development may indicate Warner may not just walk back into the opening position for the World Cup beginning May 30 in England and

Wales. Finch and Khawaja put together seven opening partnerships over 50 runs in the 10 matches against India and Pakistan, including partnerships of 193, 209 and 134 as Australia’s batting order came together following a lengthy fallow period in ODI cricket after Steve Smith and David Warner were handed year-long bans for their role in the ball tampering scandal which took place last year in March against South Africa.

Surat : If you are a habitual water waster, it is important that you mend your ways. A group of professionals, including doctors, has set up ‘Tapi Jasoos’ which will ensure that you change your behaviour and also work to protect River Tapi in the Diamond City. If someone notices a person wasting water or throwing garbage in Tapi, he or she can inform this group. The group will visit the spot and after verification, initiate action. If a person found wasting water refuses to change his behaviour, the group will upload photos of the wastage being done by the former on social media so as create pressure on him or her. The group will keep the name of the informer confidential. It has already received 20 calls from different parts of the city within two days of being set up, including a few

with improper details. “Our main objective is to create awareness among people. We had received a call and photos of wastage of water in a highrise building in Vesu. We went there and found leakages at several places and convinced the management to plug them immediately,” said Goldy Gandhi, a property developer, who is associated with ‘Tapi Jasoos.’ “We started this initiative as a part of the ongoing campaign ‘Love Tapi, Care Tapi’. We create awareness among people and do regular follow ups to ensure that there is no wastage of water or throwing of garbage in the river,” said Sohan Kapadiya, an interior designer. “The response of people to our initiative on the first two days of its launch has been lukewarm. We are hopeful more callers will contact us to stop wastage of water

in the city,” said Gandhi. The group is sharing its contact numbers through social media platforms. “When I was a student I had seen Tapi clean and full of water. But now the river is in a bad shape. This is why we decided to start Tapi Jasoos,” said Dr Sandhya Chhasathiya, a gynaecologist and supporter of this unique movement. The groundwater level is dropping in the city at an alarming rate because of so many borewells everywhere. Areas like Dumas are facing severe water crisis for the first time in many years due to groundwater exploitation by unscrupulous elements. The demand for water increases in summer months, but the civic authorities of Surat are not in a position to increase water supply by 10 per cent unlike in the past due to water shortage, sources said.
