Kriti Kharbanda looks stylish in the red and white saree. ‘Six Indians saved from sinking boat’ Six Indian citizens who tried to enter the US illegally and didn’t know how to swim were rescued from a sinking boat in northern New York, federal court documents stated. A seventh individual, a US citizen who made his own way to shore from the sinking boat, was charged with human smuggling and is being held pending trial. The rescue happened on April 28 in Hogansburg, New York, near the Canadian border after an off-duty police officer from Cornwall, Ontario, spotted a boat containing multiple people crossing from Canada to the United States, the documents said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a call to reduce “slavery to foreign goods” as the country marks its 75th anniversary of Independence — a message that fits in with his government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) campaign, and, specifically, its emphasis on local manufacturing through policy interventions such as the productionlinked incentive (or PLI) scheme. Speaking virtually at the inaugural ceremony of the Jain International Trade Organisation, a body of Jain entrepreneurs from around the world, Modi urged people to focus on domestic manufacturing and become “vocal for local”. Union minister for road transport Nitin Gadkari was also present at the ceremony.“We have to

reduce dependence on foreign products, find new destinations for export, create awareness in local markets, “ the PM said. India’s exports touched a record $670 billion in 2021-22, and the country has aggressively pursued trade agreements — it has signed deals with the UAE and Australia for instance, and is in talks with the UK for one — to boost trade. Simultaneously, it has also sought to reduce dependance on imports, including in strategically important areas such as defence. New Delhi has prohibited the import of a little over 300 types of military weapons and systems over the past two years — the latest negative list came out in April — in a bid to boost domestic manufacturing. These weapons and platforms will be indigenised.

Agency News: New Delhi Five years on, a Constitution bench will once again delve into the power tussle between the Centre and the Delhi government, as the Supreme Court sets about to decide which of the two governments has the power to transfer and appoint bureaucrats in the Capital. On Friday, a three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, preferred a larger bench to adjudicate finally on interpretation of

Article 239AA(3), which outlines the power of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government to make laws to administer Delhi.According to the bench, which also comprised justices Surya Kant and Hima Kohli, the previous five-judge Constitution bench verdict in 2018 did not provide authoritative interpretation of certain parts of Article 239AA(3), which led to rival contentions from both sides with respect to their power to control bureaucrats

in the national capital. The previous constitution bench was set up in 2017.The bench clarified that the new fivejudge bench shall adjudicate the limited issue relating to ‘Services’ in Delhi and that no other substantial issue on interpretation of Article 239AA will be adjudicated afresh since they stand settled by the 2018 judgment. “The limited issue that has been referred to this bench relates to the scope of legislative and executive powers of the Centre and NCT.

at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), as the students staged protest against the minister’s visit to the Punebased FTII. As part of their protest, the agitating students

displayed placards which among other things read:”Minister of Hate, you’re not welcome”/. In a statement issued to the media, the FTII’s agitating students dubbed his presence at the FTII as “ the

looming threat to the legacy of FTII and what it stands for”. “So we stand strongly against the communal hatred spread through his speech as well as the glorification of his visit to the FTII premises by the administration,” the statement said.“The FTII administration is welcoming a venomous communal instigator Anurag Thakur. Our country is well aware of his infamous quotes like ‘desh gaddron ko goli maro salon ko’’ at an election rally and also ill-consequences of his speech which tore into the social fabric of this nation,” the students’ union said in a statement in the afternoon.

Agency News: New Delhi In a drama that pitted police against police, involved a highway interception and an urgent high court hearing, and culminated in protests and a political war of words, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) youth wing leader was detained by Punjab Police from his home in the national capital on Friday morning, and was brought back by cops from Delhi hours later. The manner in which the saga unfolded raised key questions about the jurisdictional powers of state forces, the tenets of cooperative federalism, and the link between party politics and policing. The BJP youth wing’s national secretary Tajinder Pal

Singh Bagga was being sought by Punjab Police for a case registered over remarks that purported to threaten Delhi chief minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal. Around 8.30am on Friday, police from Punjab, where the AAP is in power, picked up Bagga from his home in Delhi’s Janakpuri, and headed to Mohali, but was intercepted around 1pm in Kurukshetra by police in Haryana, where the BJP is in power. The Punjab Police personnel and Bagga were then taken to a police station nearby, from where the Delhi Police took custody of the BJP leader, acting on a kidnapping complaint filed by the politician’s father hours earlierThe rare confrontation between police forces.

Shah crossing limits, humiliating Bengal: Didi Agency News: New Delhi Coming down heavily on Union Home Minister Amit Shah for “denigrating Bengal” in Parliament Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said that it hurt her if someone spoke against the affairs of her State.“It really hurts me if someone tells that those who come to Bengal will be murdered … this is nothing but a planned propaganda to humiliate Bengal,” the Chief Minister said, reacting to an earlier remark by Shah that if one went to Bengal one would be killed.Giving a strong reply the Chief Minister asked “why don’t you talk about Uttar Pradesh where the victims who go to the police station to

lodge complaints are victimized there also,” adding “in a State (like Bengal) with 11 crore population if there are 5 incidents some people start shouting with a narrow political motive but they keep mum incase of other places … I must say that Bengal is better than many other states of India.” On Shah’s statement about the BSF not getting adequate help from the local administration in stopping infiltration, Banerjee said that the Home Minister was trying to use the paramilitary forces to rule Bengal by proxy. “Now from his statement we can see that the cat is out of the bag … they are trying to use the BSF to overrule Bengal which is dangerous and goes against the federal structure of the county.

SUNVILLA SAMACHAR Congress Decline In Assam Has Led To Vacuum In Opposition Politics

It has been a year since the results of the assembly elections of Assam were declared andthe BJP scripted history in this northeastern state by winning for the state consecutively.During the election campaign, the Opposition in the form of the Grand Alliance led byCongress presented itself as the only alternative to the BJP-led National DemocraticAlliance. Although the Grand Alliance was able to receive only 1% fewer votes than NDA,the elections gave a blow to the hopes of the Opposition, which was desperate to anyhowdefeat the saffron party-led alliance. The defeat has only widened the internal tussle within the grand old party, which is yet torecover from the shock of the defeat. Within a year only, two significant leaders of the partySushmita Dev, a former president of the All India Mahila Congress, and Ripun Bora, aformer state Congress president, left the party to join the Trinamool Congress, a WestBengal-based party. There are leaders still within the party who aren’t happy and are lookingfor greener pastures. It’s an open secret that the grand old party is facing problems of credibility for allying withDhubri Lok Sabha MP Badruddin Ajmal-led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), aparty which is seen as a communal one by the Hindu Assamese speaking people and by thetribals, mostly Hindus. The Congress leadership in its desperation to fight against the BJPseems to be confused about AIUDF. Last year, the grand old party broke the alliance withthe AIUDF after the assembly polls, where the party performed badly in Upper Assam andother Assamese dominated areas. But within months the party again allied with Ajmal’s partyfor the Rajya Sabha polls this year but its candidate Ripun, who is now in TMC, lost thepolls. The united Opposition had the numbers but due to cross-voting by 8 MLAs, where themajority of them belonged to AIUDF, the Congress failed to send its representative to theUpper House. Due to this, the party doesn’t have any representative from Assam and alsofrom the northeast region in the Upper House. As the alliance with AIUDF failed again, thestate Congress leaders again started criticizing Ajmal and his party. The party is failing tmatch the tactics of its former strong leader, Himanta Biswa Sarma, the present chiefminister of Assam and BJP’s dominant leader in the northeast region. The BJP’s victory inthe second seat proves that Himanta still has contacts with a section of leaders fromCongress and even AIUDF. That the arrogance of Congress central leaders, particularlyRahul Gandhi, forced Himanta to join the BJP is one of the major reasons, the party, in itsonce stronghold, is paying heavily currently. The state Congress leaders know this butcontinue to deny the reality. The main opposition party Congress is ceding the space and there is a growing vacuum. The voters, who are against the present saffron dispensation, are looking for alternatives. This was seen in the recent Guwahati Municipal Corporations where Aam Aadmi Party and Assam Jatiya Parishad opened their accounts but the grand old party failed to open itsaccount. Out of the 60 seats, the BJP won impressively by taking 49 — in addition to thethree seats which were won uncontested — while its ally Assam Gana Parishad won 6 seatsout of 60. Significantly, both the lone candidates of AAP and AJP belonged to the Muslimcommunity. Although Congress somehow was able to maintain the second position, the AAPwas just 3% behind the grand old party, which secured 13% votes. The AAP is emboldened by this performance. However, this is too early to say that the partyis on the way to replacing the grand old party. On the other hand, there is Raijor Dal, a newregional party formed in 2020 just like AJP, which is trying to get a foothold in the state, particularly in Assamese dominated areas. Last year, the party led by Sibsagar MLA AkhilGogoi came second by pushing the Congress to the third place in the Mariani seat by-poll. Inthe Thowra seat by-poll, the party was in a tight contest with the grand old party. BothMariani and Thowra are in Upper Assam and these two constituencies were strongholds ofthe Congress, which even won these in the assembly elections last year.Clearly, this shows that the Opposition voters in the state are looking beyond Congress.TMC is also in the race to - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara take advantage of this situation.

Govt allows city bars to stay open till 3 am

The Delhi government has granted permission to all pubs and restaurants serving liquor to stay open till 3am — a move aimed at elevating the Capital’s nightlife, giving a shot in the arm to the hospitality industry that is reeling from the pandemic, and increasing employment opportunities.A formal order is likely to be issued soon, people familiar with the matter said, adding that the government is coordinating with the Delhi Police and other agencies for the safe implementation of the new timings. Most pubs and restaurants, barring some exceptions, are currently allowed to stay up till 1am.

In an official government note, deputy chief minister and excise minister Manish Sisodia asked the department on Thursday to extend the closing time of restaurants, and to ensure that no establishment is subjected to harassment if it stays open till 3am. “...to bring some cultural and nightlife activity in the national capital, which will further enhance the employment opportunity of our people, the Delhi government approved the New Excise Policy in November 2021 allowing the operating timings of restaurants up to 3am ...The final implementation is being coordinated with the other agencies including Delhi Police,” read the file noting signed by Manish Sisodia.

Liquor all set to get cheaper in Ggm as state govt cuts taxes Agency News:Gurugram The prices of imported foreign liquor (IFL) in Gurugram are likely to decrease from June as the excise duty and valueadded tax (VAT) on the sale of liquor have been reduced as part of Haryana’s new excise policy announced on Friday. The new rules, which will come into effect from June 12, aim to counter the Capital’s excise policy which was released in November, under which bars and restaurants serving liquor can remain open till 3am, by allowing bars in Gurugram to stay open till 8am as long as their owners pay the excise department an annual additional fee of ₹20 lakh, excise officials said. The timings for liquor vends remain unchanged (from 8am to 12am), said officials. The policy will also allow more liquor vends in a single zone, and drinking places adjacent to liquor

vends, which were called “ahatas”, have been renamed as “taverns”.VK Beniwal, the deputy commissioner of excise and taxation, Gurugram (east), said that as part of the policy, 60% of excise duty and 4% of VAT have been reduced on IFL. “The overall prices will reduce after re-tendering of the vends (annual auction of vends) in June. There has been a slight decline in the excise duty and VAT on India-made foreign

liquor (IMFL) but only for limited brands, including Blenders Pride, Teachers, 100 Pipers,” he said.Vendors said that the price of imported scotch is likely to go down by ₹300 to ₹450 for a one-litre bottle, and that of IMFL whisky by ₹150 to ₹300. Even beer will become cheaper with a case of 12 set to cost ₹150 less.Beniwal said that since there is no maximum retail price on liquor in Haryana, they can sell it at any price without having to give discounts, and still offer customers better deals than Delhi. “Liquor shops will reduce their prices and will compete with Delhi and duty-free shops. Now footfall will increase in Gurugram,” he said.Officials said earlier there used to be two liquor vends in a zone, the number has now been increased to four, and to prevent drunken behaviour in public, only one tavern will be allowed in a retail zone. Beniwal said.
